In 1993 the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) introduced the vitality index (VIX®), which measures the near-term market volatility derived from the S&P 500 stock index option prices. As mentioned on the CBOE website:

This method of measurement, which could also be referred to as the fear index, is translated into a percentage point that indicates the level of movement — both positive and negative — in the selected shares over the following 30-day period.

Now, you may ask what it all means. How could we take advantage of such an index? Well, the development team behind VolatilityCoin has decided to implement this index — though with a different approach to that of VIX — within their wallet andwebsite, and use it as a method of controlling the coin’s overall value. We group the top 20 coins listed on CoinMarketCap and track their individual overall percentage of change in the last 24 hours. This is done every hour and, of course, with consideration to their respective BTC and Fiat volume so that there are no unfair stats. This is to prevent the large percentage changes on coins with smaller market caps could easily fluctuate with a minor BTC/Fiat volume.

After doing this, the number gathered is divided by 20, which results in the volatility number. As mentioned in their whitepaper:
“To measure the implied volatility in the top 20 crypto currencies by market cap in the next 10 days. The measure of volatility will be in either direction including to the upside or downside. In other words, when investors anticipate large upside or downside movements in the upcoming days, volatility coin will peak in value.”

The purpose of this number is to indicate the overall direction that the market could be heading in the next 10 days and to give value to VolatilityCoin [VLTY] by using a built-in trading bot — which is yet to be released to the public — to sell or buy based on that number. “While technically it does not measure the probability that the market is going to drop or raise in the near future, at times it does represent a measure of fear or expectation that the price

Let us consider the overall specifications and see how it has been performing. This coin has an X-15 algorithm that differs from the X-13 by having two extra algorithms — shabal and whirlpool — with a total supply of 35,000,000 VLTY. Launched on September 6th, VolatilityCoin offered traders 4,200,000 VLTY of the total supply through an IPO at a trading value of 0.000027 BTC each. This ended with 2,316,705 VLTY being traded and the rest being burned by the escrow.
