We have seen a significant amount of comments on the web (various forums, Reddit, etc.) that portray Mt.Gox as a company held by “idiots” and other rather rude words, complaining about inability to deal with lag and other system issues, without understanding the magnitude of work and attacks we are facing every day.

There are a lot of issues they haven't addressed, like the utterly inadequate trading engine they are using. What Gox must keep in mind is"With greater power comes greater responsibilities", they choose to be in this position, they are now the "face" of bitcoin trading, then they have to keep up.

If anything, this letter demonstrates how super-bullish the market is. People controlling vast amount of resources trying desperately to obtain as many bitcoins as possible, resorting to all kinds of means, dumping, trolling, and even DDOSing, just for some more bitcoins.

They really should communicate faster and more frequently, BUT this is a great start. I hope they keep this up.

I would assume most of the people there were busying trying to deal with the DDoS (and everything else). Perhaps it would be a huge step forward if they hired a PR guy(gal) who did nothing but keep the public up to date during these events. Something simple like that can go a long way.
They seriously need that PR person, I think you're right, it could go a long way. This person could manage all of their facebook and twitter accounts, and be in touch with the community frequently, especially during this kind of garbage.

They're doing their best.  With the massive influx of new accounts and the skyrocketing of the price within a relatively very short period of time (compounded with attack issues) it's realistic that they would have been a little unprepared.  Over the next few months Gox will see a lot of man power coming in to help out with everything.  Keep it positive for our investments, and let's not scare away noobs (like myself) who will increase the size of the bitcoin community.

Actually, they addressed it. This is what they've said:
Does this mean that we are giving up fighting lag? Hell, no. We are working on it by creating a new trade engine that will solve many problems, but it’s not a magic bullet.

Sorry, I forgot about that, but I don't think they have fully realized the seriousness of the problem on their part, although I still believe them to be the most reliable.

It's not just recently though.  Every big move has caused their trading engine to lag, way before the price started to take off in the last couple of months.

I am just hoping Gox is scaling up their hardware & software to handle the incoming load. The worst possible thing to happen right now would be for their platform to crash. It happened to Myspace, Facebook and many other sites from early rapid adoption. Anyone know what their back end is written in? Hopefully it is C++ or Java and not PHP.

PHP can do ANYTHING!

I love PHP, I use it every day. But I would never use it for a world class trading platform.

Maybe on the front end.

The problem with PHP is exactly "it can do anything"(also literally).

They seriously need that PR person

That's not only what they do not need. That's exactly the opposite of what they need.
