 i'm test mining on 2 very different machines (lap/desk) both mining since 04:30 (ut-5) both have the exact same # of coins atm

That is the desired result. It is random blind luck so they won't get exactly the same amount but it should be close depending on how many miners exist. A faster machine can get fewer and a slower can get more and vice-versa as the difficulty sways.
