Title: Sleepless? Tired? No time for family?
Post by: Jessi on January 10, 2012, 09:09:43 PM
After some nervous nights watching always with one eye open to my monitor and inspired by the "Sleep"-Thread here, I decided to make a little tool for alarming me, if there happing something which I should know on Mt. Gox. During last two nights I tested it and slept well (until those heavy spikes appeared). Anyway as it is a little tool which could be useful for you all, too, I decided to place it on a little website where I want  to place (when Iīve got a bit more time) some more little tools like this one, which I have programmed during last weeks.
But remember: it is early beta and only a very little programm, but maybe you find it helpful. ;-)

Here is the link: http://goo.gl/N3ke4 (http://goo.gl/N3ke4)

Have a good night. ;-)

It should be a sound: bull for high, bear for low...

i don't understand why you have 3 sets of high/low boxes.

seems all you would need is 2 boxes; one on each side of the last price.

You can set up to six alarms:
1 for the last value of "buy" (high)
2 for the last value of "buy" (low)

1 for the last value of "last" (high)
2 for the last value of "last" (low)

1 for the last value of "sell" (high)
2 for the last value of "sell" (low)

Because I could imagine that someone is monitoring more buy than sell.

I guess most people would monitor "last", right?

Interesting.

For me I just need to monitor the Last  (high and low), so as to sell at my profit point (high), or as a stop-loss order warning (low).

Sent you your donation, btw.

Just in case anyone wants the mini-window version of this tool always floating on top in Windows environment
there is this simple tool "Always Top" which will do that:

http://www.labnol.org/software/tutorials/keep-window-always-on-top/5213/

Use it all the time, works like a charm. Once you activate the program, just hit control-space bar on the window you always want in the foreground.

Hey Jessi this tool is cool like ice  8)

I really like the graphic of the Bitcoin logo made into an alarm clock.  Might be fun to have one of those old-style alarm clocks with a Bitcoin logo as the face  ;D

Jessi,

After you get some feedback, and make minor changes, if any, I would then re-post an official "announcement" thread, with a proper title this time, something like "Announcing Bitcoin Trading Alarm Tool"

Think a lot of folks on the Speculation Forum board are going to like this.

I am actually able to resize the mini-window version, after removing the address bar.  (firefox 5.0, windows 7)

Floating in front of all my BTC data charts. Very cool.

Yes, maybe... letīs see, what is happening during next days. If more like this tools and if more have suggestions what I could improve and all (maybe) bugs are fixed, then Iīll decide if it is worth...

Good job.

Thank you! :)

I noticed that Sierra has alarms, but I did not use it, yet, because what I needed was a tool which keeps a low load on my cpu, because sometimes I have to work on other things and sierra is too big for such little things what I am doing with bitcoin-trading. Also I donīt want to install sierra on all my systems.
Anyway I am sure, that there are some other tools around, which could also do the same, but as I liked to do an own solution, I did not search for those, yet. :)

Thanks. I did compare it during last two days, too and did not find major differences. Some times it is a bit slower, than the price inside Mt.Gox itself, sometimes a bit different to Mt.Gox live (even if I take the data from Mt.Gox-Ticker). I guess this behavior is because of the caching. Anyway it always informed me fast enough and during last two night I was able to make a few BTCs by trading fast enough. :)

To set it up very easy, was most important for me, too. Because sometimes you have to react fast and if you are during other work and donīt have much time, itīs nice to change one number only and youīll keep informed.

If you maximize the mini-window (double click window bar) it so nicely fills the screen.

A great visual Bitcoin Ticker/Alarm, when I'm further away from the laptop.

I like the bull & bear sounds but it would be cool if one could customise or at least have options for a few others that were more subtile in case those become a bit too much when one has alarms set very close to the last price that go off a lot, many thanks for this app Jessi

This is a good Idea. Iīll see what I can do, about the Sounds. I liked the bull-sound, but the bear isnīt good like I want, but I did not find a better one.
Anyway, this could be a good Idea to choose for each alarm a sound. Maybe by a drop down under each field? This could contain other alarms and also a Version where it only gives optical alarm like flashing or something else...

Question: is the ability for changing refresh based on any special needs, bandwidth, etc?

If it runs fine at 10 seconds cache for everyone, would that be a redundant choice to have?

Just curious.

As Mt. Gox is telling in their API-Description "All of the API methods below have cached results, ticker, depth . . . have a 10 seconds cache . No need to poll more often, you wont have more results, you could just be blocked by the prolexic anti ddos features."
I guess that 10 Seconds is the best time to load. Anyway it could be that someone only keeps informed and does not have to react. For this people I decided to make it chooseable, because maybe an information every Minute or even Hour could be enough for them.

Got it!

If someone were to choose lower refresh than 10, against Mt Gox API "directive", could it cause problems with the alert tool?

IMHO...

Using the mini-window, I think making the clock a little more transparent/translucent would make it easier to read Text and Data.

I like the design of the bitcoin clock though, don't change that.

Anyway I have since some month ago in mind, to make a little page which containing many little tools like this one, because I do not want to participate only on those things others are releasing, I just want to give something back to the scene, even if it is not as big as those great tools out there are...

Maybe... I am not sure about that, because they also explained how to grab data from their ticker from other pages and if those pages are called from many people this could end up in a higher interval. Weīll see whatīs happening after more people like to use this. Maybe I have to regulate it over my server that the server himself only catches every 10 seconds the data from the ticker.
If the tool is not delivering any more, let me know, please. ;-)

You would be amazed how such a simple tool like this can make a difference.

Now I dont have to scroll back and forth between charts to verify pricing. And I get an alarm when prices hit a certain level.

You saw the need on that "sleepless" thread, smart !

my 2 bitcents
add a e-mail option. (ex. if price goes over 7.50$ send e-mail to xxx@xxx.coom)

The Mini-Window version of this tool is Dah Bomb.

It's not easy to see it, but there is a link for this on the main tool page

Tip for using Mini-Window version:

Remove web address bar using browser command, resize window to suit your need, use "Always on Top" tool to always have as foreground window.

By the way Jessi, why not remove the web address bar from the Mini Window? It's steals valuable real estate from the mini interface and it's not necessary as it serves no browsing function anyhow?

Thank you, very much. I was thinking about that. Or even to send a tweet. But for this I should have to implement some logic to the server finally, to keep it useful for the case you turn your computer off.
Anyway I could maybe implement it easyly for the case you keep your computer running...

Let me think a bit about it. ;-)

You are right. I donīt like the adress bar, too.
I am not sure, if it is still possible (did not use PopUps for long time)?! Arenīt PopUps in modern Browsers always opening including adress-bar first? I have to take a closer look at...

Anyway, I made some little updates:
- Favicon is included now
- The "Bitcoin Alarm clock" is a bit more transparent (about 10%) to keep all more readable
- The first step of other alarms is included what means an optical alarm for each column

What still is missing:
- sound-chooser for different sound (and for turn of sound, keeping only optical alarm)
- email-alarm (if kept running this tool)
- email-alarm (even if tool is closed, but this maybe later)
- twitter-alarm (maybe later, if someone wants it)
- ticker for more data (which data?)
- maybe more alarms (on what?)

You don't have to worry about that mini-window address bar.

Apparently, the next time I re-opened the mini-window, it remembered the previous setting I had when I removed the address bar through Firefox command. Problem solved on the user end!

I would vote for any kind of a visual alarm as a priority update,  Some times folks cant do the sound (like in the workplace or wifi cafe)

No, the tool still receives data, but I had some delays on the Mt.Gox-Ticker itself, too.
I am not sure about that, but some others and I also had some problems during this day with Mt. Gox. It seem to me, that the servers from Mt.Gox are under heavy load today...

For me anyway, for the last 15 minutes all the entry fields are blank for buy/sell data. Using Firefox 5, Windows 7.

The other charts seem to be bring in consistent data, btccharts, clarkmooody, bitcoincharts.

Anyone else seeing these blank fields?

I will try to restart everything, maybe it's on my end.

I had several delays on Mt. Gox, too. Bitcoinchart, MTGox Live, and so on delivered data to me, too. But Mt.Gox itself did not... Routingproblems? Or Server-Probs at Mt.Gox? All could be...

One Idea to prevent this, would be to grab data from different sources and let the tool also grab data from two servers itself. This would not be very difficult, but I would need to know, where are different sources to grab from...

Along with that, perhaps an on/off sound check box?

also when red/green blinking, clicking anywhere in the column to turn off.

I think you pointed to a solution for Jessi to implement: clicking anywhere on the flashing column to stop all alarms.

Yes, that could be. Hmm... I may should bring an error-message on top, if data can not be received...
Also again I am thinking about receiving data from two different servers I got in two different data centers.
This would make the tool more independent if something in the routing is not working well.
Iīll keep this idea in mind after implementing that sound-thing.

Thanks for the server link, next time it happens I will test it.
Thank you for your patience.

i think a nice setup would be "dynamically adding alarms"

3 inputs

 [value]  [condition]    [method]
 [7.5$]   [<= 1 BTC]  [sound alarm]

something like that, just thinking out loud  ;)

Hmm, sorry I am a bit tired now (in Germany it is 6:16 at the morning) and itīs hard to follow for me. :)

If I understand you correctly, this does mean, you could place more than those alarms.
Like a "table" where you add a row with an alarm and a condition for it?
Very different to the behavior now, but a nice Idea which I would like to keep in mind and maybe realize in a "reloaded" Version. :)

Yes, I found a little strange behavior depending on caching. It seem for me, if Mt.Gox does not deliver much data, it is beginning to slow down and sometimes it behaves like old men and "forgets" to receive new data. :D *joking*
I made a new version which seem to pull more accurate data. I bring it online with next update. ;-)

Ok. I now made some updates again:

- First I found two little bugs:
  - The strange behavior with showing no alert even if it should is fixed
  - also the "caching"-behavior should be better. Now it should work more accurate like before
- Also updated: Sound on/off-Button
You should know, that first the sound is turned off, because of the hint regarding those people who are using this at work. ;-)
You can turn on the sound every time by a single click or you can turn it off again.

- email-alarm (if kept running this tool)
- email-alarm (even if tool is closed, but this maybe later)
- twitter-alarm (maybe later, if someone wants it)
- ticker for more data (which data?)
- maybe more alarms (on what?)
- adding as many alarms with individual behaviors line, by line and maybe with reactions (this for V2).
- if there are still caching-problems, then catching data from different servers.

Jessi:

I really like this alarm and your programming skills are to be commended.

The sound of the Bear and Bulls for low/high alarms are great. The Red and Green Flashing and addition of mute button make it much more practical. I notice also that the Mini-window is much more readable, with the alarm clock graphic nicely faded in the background.

I hope that any other changes you do in the future do not impact the basic functionality for which I think this tool was intended: to simply give us an alarm when highs and lows are crossed.   I think email alarms or specific price alarm improvements might belong to another tool altogether, unless you really think it could be handled just as efficiently with this one?

At this point for me, the only minor improvement that I could see would be to have the default refresh show 10 seconds, instead of 1, with 10 being the optimal one which you had before.  Perhaps caching data from other servers, if that's possible, would be a good addition because of the importance of having the most Bitcoin Price updated data. Aside from that, I like the Bitcoin Alarm just the way it is.

Early in the morning now, I go back under the covers wondering if I will hear the sweet sound of a Bull or the scary sound of a man-eating Grizzly.

Another donation is on it's way.  And hoping that others will contribute to you for this invaluable BTC trading tool.

The basic intention on my side was the same than yours: a very simple and very quick to use alarm clock. Other features (like a complex alarm with "if-then-else"-Features and maybe reactions like a bot, maybe placed in an other tool (V2, "reloaded", whatever).

Made a very little update:
- changed the default back to more useful 10 Seconds
- changed the Bear-Sound to a newer one
- a little bug fix inside the code

Yeah, that new Bear sound is intense, nice. If the Man-Eating Grizzly alarm doesn't get you out of your BTC position, I don't know what will.

So far, Jessi, it is running smoothly on my Firefox, no hangups, pauses today. Has consistently price changed with other MT Gox related charts/tickers, even faster than some. Good job.

cool, my preference would be to have the sounds on by default & for peeps to silence them with a click X if they wanted silent/just visual mode otherwise one may think one has set up an audio alert when one didn't, but I'm used to checking that now so whatever works for the majority is fine by me

& later on options to choose an alarm type sound like the NE NE NE NE kinda sound of a intruder security zone breach, maybe there's something here?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alarms_on_submarines

edit: the klaxon for Dive Dive would be cool to have to set for big price plunges
edit: Star Trek Red Alert (http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Red_alert)
edit: Industrial Alarm (http://soundbible.com/287-Industrial-Alarm.html)

this to be available for high or low as a red danger warning on your long or short positions say, for margin calls, incoming zhoutongs etc

& some particularly ebil sound for when the BTC price has given you a thorough zhoutonging - perhaps an ironic evil laugh or mocking

then for a 'money rung up on the cash till (registrar)' bling type sound for when you wish to just know that your position has made a nice few pips up or perhaps a bundle, also maybe a phew! sound to set for when your position on Bitcoinica has finally eaten the spread & gone in to the green at last

anyway - fab app!

Thank you. Same on my side. I watched and compared it the whole day, and yes, sometimes it was faster than other services and I did not have any hangups, too.

Ok. Iīll see what I can do in next versions. Sound choosing could be next feature. Anyway I guess I need some days to release, because I have to care a bit about my time (and my clients!). :)

you might like to take a look at kitco's app, it would be fab to have something similar for bitcoins (I requested it a while back) & if combined with your alarm function would be a big winner, also this alarm function ability if added to kitco's app would be very, very popular with their clients I'd imagine & perhaps they'd buy/lease the coding from you?

Just plug in a 500 Watt Pioneer stereo system to your PC speaker out...that should do the trick.

I have a Logitech Z305 plug-in laptop speaker which cranks the sound.

Jessi, more feedback on your tool.

So far so good, not a single pause or delay. Alarm's worked splendidly for me last night and today.

A suggestion for a minor improvement:
The Refresh Rate entry field is probably not necessary or could cause issues. Let me explain.

The 10 setting for refresh rate appears to be working very well, as per my testing and with other feedback., Also you had mentioned this refresh setting is based on Mt Gox's optimal API refresh requirements.

Because this tool is an alarm for BTC price change, and since the very most current price is needed at all times for this alarm to be worthwhile, having a user set refresh rate run longer than the optimal setting seems self-defeating. Someone could lose their shirt, or miss a buying opportunity if they can't react quickly enough to the most current price.

Since it is running so well at the default setting, if not faster than other Mt Gox Price charts/feeds, I would recommend that you simply remove this option altogether. I could see someone going and accidentally adding a zero for 100 seconds, or going below the optimal refresh rate which probably would not help anyway (as per Mt Gox API recommendations?).

I would simply leave a line that states "Set to optimal refresh rate of 10 seconds". Or perhaps, remove the refresh rate option for just the Mini-Window version?

Let me know your thoughts.

Glad to see your donations for the Alert Tool are growing; certainly well deserved.

Stews right on this one.  i would never set it for longer than 10 and it doesn't help to set it lower than 10, so why have it?

you could stick some other control feature in that space like a turn off flash button.  it would be nice to turn off flash and sound while retaining the input alert price.

the whole rest of the screen could flash another colour at the same time for this - it's because what confuses me is that it flashes both one's high & low prices when only one of these has been met & whilst the colour shows wether it's the high or low I'm not used to just getting that yet

thanks for ur 2 btcs, thank goodness that there're not flashing  :P

Hmm, yes, thatīs a good Idea. You are right, as most people would like to catch that from stream what they are able to catch, I am sure, that no one would place in there a higher level than 10. A lower does only Spam the Servers... ok. I will drop this field in next Version. ;-)

Glad to see your donations for the Alert Tool are growing; certainly well deserved.

Yes, I am happy, too. As I lost some weeks ago about 50% of my Bitcoins in making first speculating steps, every Bitcoin is welcome to fill the whole (even if it is a long way to go) :)

its won't fill the current price fields now, my other data displays are working fine

Yes, I did see it some hours ago, but I did not had the time to reply here or even to check what was going on.
Has anyone tested my URL www.bitcoin-tools.de/ticker.php (http://www.bitcoin-tools.de/ticker.php) or maybe the original ticker URL from Mt.Gox https://mtgox.com/api/0/data/ticker.php (https://mtgox.com/api/0/data/ticker.php) ?
When I saw that there where no new data appearing I saw the same on Mt.Gox Live, too. Maybe Mt.Gox did not deliver as fast as almost?

Hmm, ok... I would like to let decide the people here, because we have two or three different suggestions for this:
1. Flashing like it is
2. Flashing only the field which triggers the alarm
3. Flashing only the field which triggers the alarm and also the whole background

(4. chooseable?)

Little Update:
- the field where you can enter the value for the request has gone
- instead there is a little countdown to have an indicator that the tool still is active
- also there is shown a green square shown during the loading progress which normally fast disappering
if it is not appearing, there should be a problem with your internet-connection (maybe slow, or routing problem)
This is maybe helpful to see if there are loading problems.
You can test it, by loading the tool and turning off the internet after loading it:
The green Button should disappear after turning the internet on again.

Jessi, for your future update, if you placed those 2 controls -- the mute and flash on/off -- side-by-side in the middle of the Mini Window, that would be awesome. I like it if your mini-window interface is as readable as possible with little clutter, cause I like to make it small.   ;D

In this way we could easy see, why the Tool is "hanging".
For example; if Mt. Gock-Ticker and/or Ticker on my Server is changing, and green light appearing long time on, it could be that you have a bad connection...

usually green indicates everything is ready to go and working whereas red means everything has stopped and not working.  so what does the temporary green light mean over the countdown?

It gives feedback on the 10 second refresh, every green block indicates end of the refresh interval.

I think Jessi is saying that if the green block disappears or hangs, its an indication that the Data has paused, or is not refreshing correctly. Its a good indicator to see if the alert tool is working correctly or not.

IMHO, giving it one more night of testing, I would consider the Bitcoin Alert Tool out of Beta phase at this stage.

Jessi, I think either renaming the title of your thread or starting a new thread with "Announcing the Bitcoin Alert Tool!" would be appropriate.

Just in case some folks in the Speculation Forum missed it.

I encourage all my trader friends to donate heartily to Jessi.
Thank you again! :)

yeah...getting around to it...I WILL!

I want to set my own links for the audio

"we're in the money"

"stormy weather"
Yes, this is one of the thought upcoming features: more sounds and selectable.
I am still thinking about keeping the solution simple, but  allow to choose different sounds for each of the six posiible states...

usually green indicates everything is ready to go and working whereas red means everything has stopped and not working.  so what does the temporary green light mean over the countdown?
Like Stewart told, it is indicating the refresh state.

Exactly it is working this way:
if the download starts, the green "LED" is appearing. If it is finished and going to update the Numbers witch loaded values (or even if they remain) the green LED is disappearing. That does mean: if you are disconnected from internet the LED will appear also, BUT if wonīt be disappear until you are not connected again and the data has been downloaded. That means if there are any connection-problems it is appearing longer than before or it does not disappear. Itīs more a diagnosis on client errors than on server errors. It does not allow a diagnosis on not refreshing the Mt.Gox Ticker itself. But this you can do on your own if you have problems by refering the given links above. If they wonīt refresh there is a problem on Mt.Gox itself.

Hmm, unsure about that. I would like to implement a bit more features and see what will happen, if the ralley beginning again and more users are online to use it. At the Moment only a few users are using it. That is bad and good together, because it allows me to do little more improvements and test it without being in stress. ;-)

Yes, you're right, the action is slim now, because of no rally.Save that announcement for when the action heats up

The alert tool has been working flawlessly today, I had it running in tandem with clarkmoody tool
and the trade btc prices synchronized very well.

I'm using it - thanks!  I'm finding that I check the charts less often now, and sent you a 2 btc donation.  Oh, and I use noscript and block google-analytics.com, so I (and others like me) won't show up on your user counter.

HI Jessi.

Report on my the Alert Tool usage: the data performance has been flawless, and got the happy bull sounds and green flashings on this last rally.  A big Moooohhh to you!

Here are 2 minor things I've encountered using the mini-window version:

First, noticed that when I enter a price in the entry field, sometimes before I finish entering the price, the alarm goes off. For instance, lets say the current price is $6.50 and I want to enter in the "High" entry field the number $6.95, if I type in the number 6, somtimes it triggers the alarm before I can finish typing in the rest of the price. Is there anyway to give a few seconds focus for data entry, so the alarm does not inadvertently trigger? Or do I just have  to type faster?  :-)

Second, and this is purely my personal take on the look-and-feel with the Mini-Window. Noticed you are using this Arial Black style font for the price data, which is nice for readability. In the Mini Window, when it is initially launched, the font is quite readable. But if the window is resized smaller, than the price readouts do get harder to read. I find myself adjusting the window size continuously over my other data/charts screens, and trying to find the right window size for number readability is a challenge. Would there be anyway to make the price data fonts maybe 2 points bigger in size without enlarging the window size?  That would help tremendously with continued readability as the mini-window is scaled down in size, which I find to be an extremely useful aspect of the alarm tool.

Many thanks for your work and effort on this. It has become indispensable for my BTC trading.

Yes, I know what you mean. I recognized this, too and itīs because of the programm-design itself.  As not everyone will enter directly after starting the programm some numbers, a simple "wait" would not work here. Only a delay during typing. But what would happen, if the data is changing during typing? You would not be informed, even if you have made a correct entry. Or if it would start the alarm-check after leaving the field, what would happen, if you forget to leave and the cursor remain still inside?  ;)
Itīs hard to catch if you donīt want to loose the fast reaction... I have to think about it.

Hey Jessi,

The alarm "trigger" issue is not that bad actually. Just a bit touchy at times when typing or inserting in the entry fields.

Saw the update on the mini-window font, your fast!  Bumping up that font size made a huge difference. As a test, I got the mini-window size down to a tiny 2 1/2" x 2"rectangle and the price numbers are still very readable. (I forgot to mention that I always remove the browsing address bar in the mini window, using Firefox command, to make better use of the mini-window real estate.)

Also, the wider space between the alarm mute and flasher on/off is a nice touch.

Thanks again!
Stew

I googled couple potential solutions.

First, try removing (temporarily) on your full size Chrome browser, the address bar.  THEN click on the link to the mini window. It should remember the setting for the mini version.

Also, I saw that ctrl+shit+a is a keyboard shortcut for removing address bar in Chrome, see if that works for the mini window.

no, it didn't.  perhaps its b/c i'm on a Mac.  i did some googling as well but couldn't find anything else about it except for about:flag which didn't work either.  :(

i finally got the timeout for the alarm.  i would suggest Jessi change the solid continuous green square to a red one.  minor change...

I am getting off and on the same thing, frozen green square. Which indicates the data feed slowed or paused. That's a nice feature that I do not see any of the other BTC chart/data tools having: warning you of potential data feed pauses/slowdowns.  I like the green square for when its working; wonder if Jessi could have it turn to red square if it freezes for more than a few seconds? dunno...

Jessi,

Had an interesting thought on making the Alert/Ticker tool even more useful, without too much of a fuss.

Since the tool acts as both a ticker of current Buy/Last/Sell prices AND also provides alarms for High/Low preset in all 3 categories,
I thought why not add a little BTC Calculator?

It could be a simple entry field to enter BTC amount, and beside it, the converted USD readout always based on last price.

So, if I were to buy 100 Bitcoins,  I can monitor how much I am making/losing real time. Or I can use it to quickly convert any BTC figure I imagine to the USD price. I also see that by shifting the Mute/Flash Icons up beside the refresh read-out , it might leave enough room for the BTC calculator entry field/USD readout, especially in the limited space of the mini-window. You could have simple labels, one on the left with "BTC IN: (entry field for entering BTC amount)" and on the right, "USD OUT: (read-out of current worth in USD)"

Now you would have a Swiss Army Knife BTC tool... a Price Ticker, Price Alarm and BTC Calculator!

Anyway, just a thought. Let me know what you think.

Hehehe - you are always on the same trip like I am! :)
I am thinking about this BTC calculator-thing during a few days.
Iīve got an Excel-Sheet for this, but anyway I am thinking about bringing this "live" in a Tool.

The direction is the same, but I am thinking about a Step more... Maybe I am placing the Sheet first online to keep more clear about what I am talking... ;-)
My Excel Sheet also calculates the minimum/maximum Price where to buy or to sell again without loss and also the win finally. This is working for five steps finally.
I guess I have to place it online! ;-)

The only thing about what I am not clear is if it should be a seperate Tool, which could be opened seperately, if needed or if it would be better to place it inside the existing Tool...

Anyway today a little update on the page itself. I opened a link-section with all my bookmarks. Surely they are incomplete, errors inside and tools are missing, but all of you feel free, please and send me new links! ;-)

Excellent and practical tool that would be, to calculate profitable buy/sell points.

For now, I keep going back and forth between the mini-window and another online btc calculator to verify the worth of my btc holdings. That's what got me thinking about a btc calculator as an Alert Tool add-on.

I still think this would be a great addition, to the mini-window version anyway.

There is a space for it and it's relevant data for a BTC trader, I so could of used that during our crazy BTC action  last night.

Itīs hard to catch if you donīt want to loose the fast reaction... I have to think about it.

I suggest that whenever a field is edited, the refresh timer should be reset to 10 seconds.  That way no alarms can go off while data entry is being performed.

Today I made a new little update of the Tool.
- containing the calculator which is far away from being perfect, but could help
- now input-fields are restricted to only that kind of data which should be placed into them
- you can jump now from field to field (top to bottom and then next column) by using tabulator-key
- minor bugfixes
- some layout-changes

This is still really far away from my spreadsheet, but that one would not fit into this window. I think I would make a seperate Tool for that.

Some things still need improvements:
- the calculator is still synchronized with the data-update. This would be better if synchronizing instantly during changing the data AND during updates. Working on this...
- also the second field, which allows to calculate the $ ammount back to BTC instead of the static $ output. Working on this...
- still missing the preferences for sound
- ok. I saw the comment about the refresh timer and this could be a good Idea. Iīll what I can do next time.

Hope you like it! ;-)

Jessi, well you did implement the calculator. Kudos for that. Works great in the full size version.

But in the mini-window, the calculator results are just about non-readable when the window is re-sized smaller. And it's turned into a cluttered layout.

I see you created 3 different calculators for Buy/Last/Sell, however I think just one simple calculator, for the last price, would be all that is required.

I did a graphic mockup for a simpler layout of the alert tool with simple calculator, for mini window:

Let me know what you think. It does use the older cleaner look.  I kind of miss the previous version now...   :)

Just a quickie: noticed the numbers now are not centered in the entry fields, but right justified.

Ok. Here comes another update. Donīt know, if itīs clean like the "old" version without calculator. - Maybe I have to drop functions if itīs too much?!

Anyway I decided to give it a try. The Idea behind three calculators is the same like behind three alarms: more flexibility.
If only a calculator for "last" is needed, then I am going to drop the other two.

Now itīs calculating "live" and in both directions.

Hey Jessi, I like that update much better thanks!  Calculating in both directions, very cool.

Maybe there are some advantages to having those 3 calcs after all.

Just 2 minor things I see:

- Could you center the High/Low alarm prices like they were before? They are right justified now, and look way better when centered.

- I know you're tight on space, but could you bump up the calculator-based fonts up 2 points in size? That would make
the calculator numbers much easier to read in the mini window.

Great job man. This thing has really improved leaps and bounds.

Well Done Jessi. All the numbers are very readable!

I am testing the calculators, verifying that they update correctly with the changing buys/last/sell prices.

I noticed in recent changes the Buy, Last and Sell ticker prices in the first row, were not enclosed in rectangles. That looked
great because it stood out from the rest of entry fields, and was less cluttered in both the standard and mini broswer versions.
I think that would help clean up the look one last time.

Again, many thanks for making it a calculator too!

Sent you another donation.   :)

Sorry for the long delay, but during this day/evening I wasnīt able to concentrate much, because of the rally I lost most of my Bitcoins. What a bad month... :(
The only good thing is, that I am now not sleepless any more, because I do not have to care about my Bitcoins.  :)

Anyway here comes a new update.

Yes, you are right, I did change it. I was thinking that you maybe prefer the white one and therefore I gave it a try. But to be honest I prefered the transparent one, too. ;-)

Yes, you where right. I was just working on a bug in this feature, when the rally began to start.

Now this should also work well. If you put in a number, then it will be changing "live" if the number in the head will change. This is depending in which box you made your entry. Therefore it will remain green, if you have made an input to show that this is the given number. The other field will remain white and will change then dynamically.

Don't feel too bad Jessi about your Bitcoins, most of us lost BTC on this crazy spikefest.

It will come back to you because of the time/effort you have put in this sweet trading tool

Your alarm tool saved me from losing a lot more money, cause when I saw the Red Flasher go off at the coffee shop,
it was a major sell alert !!!

Hope all is well with the Euro...

Yes. you are right, I am just a bit tired because itīs not only this day. ;-)
Anyway I am also a bit angry about bitcoinica ("bitpanica") from now, because some days ago they told that they would do about 75% of tradings. If so, they are responsible for 75% of this large spikes and letting the newbies like me uninformed about the trading-basics it is hard not to do something wrong.

It will come back to you because of the time/effort you have put in this sweet trading tool
I donīt know... I worked very hard on my amount. I worked 9 month as a miner and when it wanīt much rentable I switched and bought BTC directly even when I was low on money. Some weeks ago I lost a big part and today the biggest part ever. That was like loosing a half year. Altogether about 400 BTC (now finally about 60-70% what I had) where gone... bad luck and to risky decisions for a newbie. Finally my fault.

Your alarm tool saved me from losing a lot more money, cause when I saw the Red Flasher go off at the coffee shop,
it was a major sell alert !!!
Thatīs a good news! I am happy to hear, that someone was rescued by this tool. That shows me, that the idea behind basically is working.
Anyway I did see, that after the crash begun the tool not delivered new data. But it wasnīt the tool itself, it was the ticker of Mt.Gox which wasnīt refreshing any more.

Hope all is well with the Euro...
I donīt know. I do not have any Euro either!  ;D

Really intresting... what is the yellow window? And wherefore do you need a calculator?

Title: Re: Sleepless? Tired? No time for family?

The yellow window is Stickies notepad program, to quickly store trading info from MT Gox.

The other calculator, Windows version, is to figure out fees, profits/losses.

Your Calculator tool provides real-time pricing on my BTC traded.

Yes, but it's too cumbersome for me to figure out for now.

I might get around to doing a spreadsheet so I can calculate numbers and record my trades in an easier way.

If you ever created a MT Gox add-on tool to help me trade more efficiently, I would pay BTCs for that.

just wanted to thank the OP for making this.  it saved my ass this morning.  instead of being -$150 im only -$20 :D

on another note, i was wondering if it would be possible to make something similar to this that would let you submit orders on mtgox.  if there was a way to set it up so only sertain orders get placed when a certain price is reached that would be excellent!  would this be possible?

More of the "Stickies" notes.  They are rolled up into into title bar mode, double-click on them and they
roll out into the Notes again.  I find them handy for storing BTC trade data and notes:
http://www.zhornsoftware.co.uk/stickies/index.html

The Stickies have API capabilities for integrating stuff, I should learn to do something with that.

Itīs not very hard to realize on this base, because most things are done...
Only to be implemented would be a server logic which is placing the order.
Finally there could be a buy and a sell order and one more step ahed it could be also automatically cancelled depending on some mathematics.
This would be a "half" bot. There are much things what could be integrated.

Yes it was, and most times I use it to reduce my risk. Today I traded without because it was offline and was burned...

Clarkmoody Tool is a really good tool and I am wondering about the way he did the programming. Some kind of genius for me, because itīs really hard to stream that fast so many data and let the most work do by clients browser instead of your server. Really cool!!

well i would hope i would easily be able to figure out the basics through google.  i would need to find a tutorial that shows how something similar is done.  i do understand basic programming logic as i have taken 2 years of intermediate C++ but totally slacked off in it.  if it is as simple as figuring out how to set it up so that information is accessed through the API and then writing simple if/then statements then i think its something i could definitely do with a bunch of coffee cigs n bud.

maybe if you do decide to do this, or anything at all in the future you could setup a screen rec of your work?    ;D

Wondering if you could do a small look and feel adjustment.

Those nice little red and green arrows, under the Buy, Last, and Sell prices...

In the mini window version, they are so close to the numbers that it makes them hard to read.

Any way you could lower those red/green arrows down away from the numbers, I think just a bit more separation would
help with readability. Thanks!

Still reviewing the stuff, from your recent PM. Have some good feedback for you!

Yes, no Problem, we have enough space there. Iīll update this in the next version.

Cool. :) I am allready working on the "web-version" for that. Iīve got first line of buy-block and first line of sell-block allready working
and I am just searching for a little bug after this I can bring it online...

Thanks, appreciate the red/green arrow fix on your next update

You can kinda get the idea of what I mean, if you look at the Alert Tool on my trading setup:

No Problem!
Itīs quite simple:
It moos always if price is climbing.
If you choose as alarm for example the column "last" and you have as last Price for example 6.1698 (at the Moment).
Then you should enter in the top-field in column "last" a value which is higher than 6.1698 for example 6.5.
It could be that it needs some seconds to reset during entering the value. Wait until the green LED at the Bottom flashes again and then it should be finally resettet.
Next time it will moo when the "last" price of Bitcoin at Mt.Gox will go to 6.5 (OR EVEN HIGHER!).

Same for the "bears":
If you enter a LOWER price in the last-column-field "low" then the you hear the bear if the price falls to this price (OR EVEN LOWER).

3 Then the sounds all repat and overlap so after a couple of countdowns I hear a cow mooing for every prior countdown
4 I also think I can hear some bears mixing in the noise
5 I can set any values and wait multiple countdowns, but nothing changes
6 green lights flash alright

would love to use it, because mtgoxlive's audio option, wich I use atm cannot be set to a certain threshold.

You should be able to set an alert for push alerts. (Within Android)

Sorry, doesnt work for me.

Here is what happens when I open the page:

1 nothing
Thatīs right!

2 When I switch sound on I hear a single cow mooing till the counter reaches 0 for the first time
This could happen if the counter above is for example 6.4 and you enter 6 and the sound starts just that moment (I have to fix this!), but after you enter 6.5 AND the countdown was 0 it should stop that sound until the last-number reaches 6.5 or higher.

3 Then the sounds all repat and overlap so after a couple of countdowns I hear a cow mooing for every prior countdown
Overlap? This is new... Hmm, maybe slow computer? Should not happen at all even on slow computers... This is kind of curious.

4 I also think I can hear some bears mixing in the noise
This never should happen. Only if you reaches two countdowns at same time, which should only possible if you uses numbers which are not useful.
For example: Last is 6.5 alarm high is 6.5 and alarm low is 6.5. Then you should hear both sounds.
But it does not make sense to enter such numbers...

5 I can set any values and wait multiple countdowns, but nothing changes
That means it still makes "moo"?

6 green lights flash alright
And Green "LED" under countdown is always "on"?

would love to use it, because mtgoxlive's audio option, wich I use atm cannot be set to a certain threshold.
Normally in this picture there should not be any alarm:
The High-Price-Level which you have set is higher than the shown price above. There seems to be no background-flashing, too.

But you still hear sound after the countdown was "0"?
Is the green light behind the counter always "on"? Or does it disappear?

Which Flash-Version do you use?
You can see your version here http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/155/tn_15507.html (http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/155/tn_15507.html) under section 2. there is a box with an red arrow which shows your flash-player-version.

Jessi,

Loving the tool every day. Alarms have been working like a charm, and gives me a little
more confidence in trading, in being able to properly monitor my trades.

After looking at the calculators I thought of a possible reconfiguration that might be more useful
for everyone. I find myself using the "Last" price-based calculator only. I use it as a gauge to see
what my current trade is worth at any given moment. For now, I do not see any use as of yet for
the Buy / Sell version calculators.

I think what would be handy is having both a "Last" calculator, and a free-form btc calculator,
to compare total dollars at most current BTC price with total dollars based on user-entered BTC price.

That way, one could get an instant comparison between dollar totals based on the live BTC price
and where they think the BTC price might be going, up or down. Also, you could enter in the free-form
calculator, the price at which you bought in at, and then always get an instant  comparison of how your
trade is doing, making money or losing dollars, and by exactly how much. Of course there are many other
uses for the free-form calculator as well, like figuring out BTC trading fees, or re-investing additional BTC
and doing cost averaging, etc.

And the nice thing is, in terms of updating the Alert Tool,  you could simply leave your calculator
entry fields exactly where they are, but make them horizontal equations, with each row being a
calculator.

The Calculator top row would be the "Last" calculator, with the BTC amount entered in the left field,
the "last" BTC price always shown in the middle field, and the totaled dollar amount shown in the
right field.

The second row for the Free-Form calculator works exactly the same, except the user decides and
enters the BTC price in the middle field.

And to make the design even easier, you could simply remove the Bitcoin and Dollar symbols in
between the calculator fields and simply replace them with "X" for multiplied by, and the "=" sign
for equals to, representing 2 horizontal equations, instead of vertical ones. Then on top of the first
calculator column place the "B" bitcoin symbol, the 2nd column maybe "P" for price, and "$" symbol
over third column for total dollars.

Let me know what you think of this idea.

Stew

I think what would be handy is having both a "Last" calculator, and a free-form btc calculator,

Hmm, to see if I understand you correctly:
You want to have two calculators INSTEAD of the one you have at the Moment:
1. which is calculating like now, based on the live price
2. you can calculate like a calculator, but giving a free price?

That way, one could get an instant comparison between dollar totals based on the live BTC price
and where they think the BTC price might be going, up or down. Also, you could enter in the free-form
calculator, the price at which you bought in at, and then always get an instant  comparison of how your

uses for the free-form calculator as well, like figuring out BTC trading fees, or re-investing additional BTC
and doing cost averaging, etc.
Hmm, but to keep it simple, how should this free-form calculator work if it should do dfferent things, like calculating fees?
And also, sometimes it there is no big spread between buy and sell possible and in those cases you should be able to calculate your "break even" price which means including your fees.

And the nice thing is, in terms of updating the Alert Tool,  you could simply leave your calculator
entry fields exactly where they are, but make them horizontal equations, with each row being a
calculator.
That is not very hard to re-arange - harder is to "re-programm". ;-)

Ok...

Ok. Sure.

Stew
This basically are all good Ideas and defenetly worth to think about and maybe to programm, to.

A little Part of this could be Part of the new Tool. (You may have checked out the Spreadsheet?)
I am thinking about this Tool as a kind of "break-even"-calculator, where you can see your
break-even (min or max) price for buy and sell after paying the fee for the transactions.
I did finalize the first rows of each block (first row for sell, second row for buy).
If they are working well, the other 4 rows each block would follow.
Finally we have 5 rows for buy and 5 for sell.
And they would summarize alltogether and you could see your profit/loss in different scenarios.
It would be behave like in excel, but a bit better, because there will be live prices included also and
you can work with it without installing anything (excep Browser+Flash-Player).
Also it could have itīs own alarm to keep you informed, if one of your scenarios will appear. ;-)

On the first Page there is a link at the Bottom "Here is a new Tool this is really early alpha. Click to open it."

Hey Jessi, I will check out your beta project ante get you some Feedback.

As for the calculator idea, will post a mockup graphic of the Alert Tool as I envision it
so you can see exactly what I mean.  With post later tonight.
BTW it's a very simple fix, just switching formulas in as all the entry fields are already in place.

 Keep up the good work!

Jessi, a free form btc calculator only has to do one thing: BTC Qty x BTC Price = Total $

User enters any figures he desires in any 2 fields to get results in the third. It's up to one's imagination
to use creatively, anything from entering current BTC trade value, to figuring out profits/losses based on
different prices.

And you can calculate fees:  example, to buy 100 BTC at 6.25 BTC Price I know I pay .45 BTC fee,
but what does that fee come to in dollars? It's quite easy, using the free form calculator enter
.45 BTC x 6.25 BTC Price which returns $2.8125.

Do you see the advantages of having this?  And with the other calculator providing real-time BTC
price, that would be a double bonus.

Let me know your feedback.

Thanks for fixing the green and red arrows, that provides much more readability!

I noticed there are no scroll bars showing on my browser for your page, and there seems to be text clipped at the

Can you post the link on this thread?

to use creatively, anything from entering current BTC trade value, to figuring out profits/losses based on

Than the calculator would behave like now, but you also would be able to place a free price?
That would be behave like the Mt.Gox Calculator?

And you can calculate fees:  example, to buy 100 BTC at 6.25 BTC Price I know I pay .45 BTC fee,
but what does that fee come to in dollars? It's quite easy, using the free form calculator enter
.45 BTC x 6.25 BTC Price which returns $2.8125.
Therefore I have made the other Tool, because Fees are changing. For some itīs 0.3 for other 0.28% and so on...
And itīs hard to know and borring to calculate always by hand for which price you really buy and what you receive if you sell then
and especiacially what would be the price for which you should sell at minimum if you donīt want to make any loss (including fees).

Do you see the advantages of having this?  And with the other calculator providing real-time BTC
price, that would be a double bonus.

Let me know your feedback.
Ok. This is not to hard to solve.
So finally I would drop the left and the right column and make them free calculating, because no one uses buy/sell?
And the other calculator I can drop, too?

Thanks for fixing the green and red arrows, that provides much more readability!

Stew

Youīre welcome.

You would not need to drop any columns, the calculators become 2 horizontal rows, instead of 3 columns.

Here is a mock-up with the 2 revised calculators in rows, so you can see what I mean:

http://i42.tinypic.com/11uc8s3.jpg

The $6.32 price in red is a permanently auto-filled field taken from "Last" price. Users cannot alter that calculator field.
All the other calculator fields are available for entry by user.

Does this make sense?

You would not need to drop any columns, the calculators become 2 horizontal rows, instead of 3 columns.

Here is a mock-up with the 2 revised calculators in rows, so you can see what I mean:

http://i42.tinypic.com/11uc8s3.jpg

The $6.32 price in red is a permanently filled-in field taken from "Last" price. Users cannot alter that calculator field.

All the other calculator fields can be used for calculations.

Does this make sense?
Ah. Ok. Now I understand what you mean. Yes, I can do this in one of the next versions.

Also I am thinking about more alarms...
For example a ask- and bid-volume-alarm or maybe only an indicator which shows the direction where it goes...?

A picture is worth a 1000 words.

Appreciate you seeing the usefulness of this!

Finally found the link to your fee tool.

I did have to maximize the window on my browser to see the rest of your home page, to find that link. The bottom part
of your page does not show up on my Firefox browser, like there are some scroll bars missing?  Other folks coming to
your site may be experiencing that clipping?

The fee tool looks very useful. I am playing with it now.

I did notice that it does "take over" the Alert/Calc tool mini window.  so I had to close the Alert Tool mini window
and re-open the fee tool again, now the fee tool window is proportionally correct.

Just to give you my feedback on how I use the alarms, I really only use the "Last" price alarm.

If I use the other Buy/Sell alarms, it's only because the spread between Buy/Last/Sell is so small I can get away with it.

And I like being able to monitor 3 different High and Low BTC price scenarios at the same time. But for me ideally, they would
all be based on "Last" price. Just my personal preference.

Did not see this behavior and I have to investigate this. Remember itīs really early alpha. I will change the behaviour of overtaking the window and missing scrollbars later.
Finally it could be coexist with the Alert-Tool.
The Tool is based on the Spreadsheet which I did send you and should finally fullfill the same.
But as you can see, there is missing one column, because I change the fields in both directions. This is helpful,
because there is no need for a separate column to calculate the total BTCs.
Anyway finally it could appear like the Spreadsheet and work a bit more "intelligent" by more opeations like using last price at start for example.

how about making a Zhoutonging calculator, as per formulae in his thread

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=56797.0;all

entry field 1: Long / Short

entry field 2: Current Bid (changes to Ask if you've entered Short)

entry field 3: Net Value

entry field 4: Maintenance

entry field 5: Amount

entry field 6: BTC Balance

The calc then does the formulae:

F1 = Long
F2 - (F3 - F4) / (F5 + F6) = ZT

F1 = Short
F2 + (F3 - F4) / (F5 - F6) = ZT

refinements, to be able to also enter any Limit & Stop orders that you have between F2 & ZT

a couple of alarm fields perhaps & an appropriate sound effect (http://www.shockwave-sound.com/sound-effects/scream_sounds.html) for hitting the ZT price

I see that M4v3R has posted a script for this (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1127246/bitcoinica.user.js), but I like Jessi stand alone alarms/calcs without needing to keep the Bitcoinica page open, please to feel free to use any of my complementary feedbacks as testimonials etc & thanks again for your fab progs :)

Ok. Another Idea could be:
Three alarms, all based on "last"
A fast "cancel" button which clears the alarm to keep "fast" informed without deleting the values by hand.
This could be helpful if you have to be prepared for small slots and donīt have the time to fill in new values. The you can do it long before and if the first alarm is beginning, you can delete it and wait for the second with a single click.

Another thing could be more statisitcs.
For example I could do a block where then separated from last price the other prices could appear to keep you more informed.
The Buttons for disabling alarms I could place also in a separted layer for "preferences" with a little button in one Edge. In the other Edge a little help-Button which explaining the basics on a seperate layer.

Yessss! :) This is something I also was thinking many times about.
BUT: Here I need MUCH MUCH help, because today I do not understand Bitcoinica completly.
With the Formula I can do it.
Ok. Letīs go a bit more systematic:

I guess we have different user-needs:
Some need just a simple alert
other are dealing only with Mt.Gox and need a helpful calculator
others are dealing with bitcoinica and need such a form
Maybe there are a few people who need all of it.

So what I would do:
First I finalize the Alert Tool during next hours (I hope)
Then the Mt.Gox Tool
And after it the Bitcoinica-Calculator

And if here are people around who find all of this helpful I would do a "all-inclusive-tool" which helps you in all cases.

Right?

I like that idea, 3 "last" alarms. Keep the 3 alarm columns exactly the way they are, just make them all for "Last" price.
Most excellent upgrade!

Maybe just one "Cancel" button to clear all alarm prices at the same time would be more helpful. (in case a huge price
spike/crash triggers all the alarms at the same time) And it also clears all alarm flashes and sounds at same time?

Usually I notice there is plenty of time to revise alarm prices, it's only when we have our instant price crashes or spikes
that one doesn't have the time to alter alarm prices in time.

Sorry, doesnt work for me.

http://img593.imageshack.us/img593/8750/unbenanntfht.png (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/593/unbenanntfht.png/)

No I could just enter whatever i wanted, it just wouldnt stop mooing and growling at me

3 Then the sounds all repat and overlap so after a couple of countdowns I hear a cow mooing for every prior countdown
Overlap? This is new... Hmm, maybe slow computer? Should not happen at all even on slow computers... This is kind of curious.

Dont think so, its only 3 years old

4 I also think I can hear some bears mixing in the noise
This never should happen. Only if you reaches two countdowns at same time, which should only possible if you uses numbers which are not useful.
For example: Last is 6.5 alarm high is 6.5 and alarm low is 6.5. Then you should hear both sounds.
But it does not make sense to enter such numbers...

I just know what I know.. ;)

5 I can set any values and wait multiple countdowns, but nothing changes
That means it still makes "moo"?

And "growl"

6 green lights flash alright
And Green "LED" under countdown is always "on"?

Dont think so (cant remember clearly)

would love to use it, because mtgoxlive's audio option, wich I use atm cannot be set to a certain threshold.
Normally in this picture there should not be any alarm:
The High-Price-Level which you have set is higher than the shown price above. There seems to be no background-flashing, too.

But you still hear sound after the countdown was "0"?

Yep

Is the green light behind the counter always "on"? Or does it disappear?

I think it disappeared

Which Flash-Version do you use?
You can see your version here http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/155/tn_15507.html (http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/155/tn_15507.html) under section 2. there is a box with an red arrow which shows your flash-player-version.

Thats the point, I actually checked your link out and updated to the most current version (11.1.102.55) now everything works fine.
Before that, I had version 10.?something?.

Thanks for the quick help, I hope you find the errors in your code, so that many more poeple can fix this great tool!

Puhhh... now nearly all updates are done...

Ok. What are the changes?
  • I dropped the alarm-columns for "buy" and "sell"
  • Instead of this weīve got now three independent alarms which are all triggered by last value
  • New are the "High", "Average" and "Low" values at the top.
  • Also there is the new calculator at the bottom. This is the "free"-calculator where you can enter your own values
  • The other calculator remains still intact and is based for the price on "last"-price-value.
It also is dynamically. This means that it will be updated if the "last"-price is updated depending on your last entry.
  • I made many design-changes. Major change is, that those elements which are less important, are now smaller and
their alpha-channel has changed to a lower value to make them less dark looking
  • Also there is now a help-button on the top right-corner, which should be a bit helpful for newbies
  • Another button on the top left-corner for preferences which should bring the old buttons to front.
Later ater there should be also sound-settings.
  • Some re-arrangements to have a bit more space
  • Little animations to make clock and donation less dominant
  • Sound is now turned on at the beginning, because I guess most need sound and for those who donīt want sound,
they have to go to preferences first to turn it off, before they enter an alarm

And what is still missing?
  • The Sound-Preferences for different alarms
  • The "cancel"-Buttons to clear the forms and also their the alarms
  • it is still triggering the alarm during entering - this is not really a bug, but itīs not nice at all.
  • More stats: I would like to see for example a summed "ask" and "bid"-value which shows direction where it goes.
  • Keyboard shortcuts for most important things like stopping alarm.

Things to discuss:
  • As mentioned before some may need the same for Bitcoinica!? - Would it be useful to do this in only one tool?
    - I would have to make this tool a bit "longer", because I would need more space for more rows.
Or would it be better to make a second tool? I do not know which is the way most poeple here work:
only Mt.Gox, only Bitcoinica, or always on both together?
  • Should this tool do more, like calculating fees and break-even prices like the upcoming tools will do?

Hope you like the changes, because this is more than only optimization.

Jessi, thanks for implementing the calculator changes.

Unfortunately, IMHO, the other design/layout changes detract from simplicity, ease of use, functionality.

-  Miss the the 3 big ticker read outs at the top, with big Buy / Last / Sell numbers ...now only Last... sigh...
-  Miss the icon buttons at the bottom, I now have to click thru 2 interfaces to deactivate alarms? Yikes!
-  The avg, high, low, numbers not necessary, detract from previous simplicity of the big  "Ticker" Numbers
-  The mini window version: cannot see the grey type labels, all too small, nearly invisible color.

Wish you would go back to previous design, but with the calculators, like the screen-capture I forwarded you.

 :(

My 2 BTCs.

Jessi, thanks for implementing the calculator changes.

Unfortunately, IMHO, the other design/layout changes detract from simplicity, ease of use, functionality.
Oh, Iīm sorry to hear that... was thinking the design is much more clear and simple...
Hmm, let me see, what we can do here.

-  Miss the the 3 big ticker read outs at the top, with big Buy / Last / Sell numbers ...now only Last... sigh...
Ok. This could be fixed easyly, because there is enough space.
The reason why I decided to make the buy- and sell-ticker smaller is, that I donīt want to mislead the people.
They maybe could think that those are still "headlines" for the columns. But the headline for all three columns now is "last price" only.
Anyway I can make them easyly looking like before.
Will be done in next update.

-  Miss the icon buttons at the bottom, I now have to click thru 2 interfaces to deactivate alarms? Yikes!
No! Finally not! ;-) This is only a Preference. I decided to place the preferences on a second page to keep the front-page as simple as possible.
There will be a cancel-button later on the front-page. But that will cancel the actual alarm without disabling sound/flash permanently.
Because we need a place where sounds could be choosen and there is no more space, I decided to do a preference page with all changes which
are permanently.
Would be a cancel-button ok for you?

-  The avg, high, low, numbers not necessary, detract from previous simplicity the big  "Ticker" Numbers
I personally find them helpful because they help a bit more to see "where you are". For example: I have the tool running fullscreen on my laptop
when I go to bed and if the alarm appearing I can see then first moment if we had some spikes without alarm or not.
But this is a feature wich we can discuss here. Any others who donīt like it or who like it?

-  The mini window version: cannot see the grey type labels, all too small, nearly invisible color.
Ok. Here I was thinking that labels normally not very important, because you allmost know what field has what label. Anyway I still have a bit
space and can make them bigger and also looking darker again.

Wish you would go back to previous design, but with the calculators, like the screen-capture I forwarded you.

 :(

Unhappy to hear that you donīt like it. Anyway Iīll see what I can do to make a design which is liked by all of you here.

The we have a simplified version and a Version which is finally loaded with tons of features.

Let me know what you think.

i like that version but i would even go one step further.  i'd remove the high/low alarms for Buy and Sell and replace them with little line graphs for hourly and daily like Clark Moody has in the upper right of his graph so we can get some idea of trend.

I guess the new? Ok. I see, we are dividing here into two versions like I said:

2. extended versions with much more features, like more stats...

Yes, Graphs would be nice. Hard to implement because there has to be many things to do first...

Ähm? But this is allready done (eleminating the buy/sell alarms)... weīve got now only three different last-alarms allready...
Anyway I did not drop the values for buy/sell because they are nice indicators, I think.
Anyway there is enough space, or I could even make the tool a bid greater, to implement more statistics.

I am allready thinking since yesterday in a new more flexible way of setting alarms.
Someone has mentioned in this thread this way also.

It could be this way:
First field you can select with a drop down "buy" or "last" or "sell" or "average". Second Field you could select "<" or ">" or "=" or "<=" or ">=" and in third field you could place your numbers.
Therefore three or four rows, which each acts same way. This would be really more flexible. Anyway itīs just an Idea.

Another Idea is making the Website a bigger Alarm-Tool: you could enter as many alarms like you want. Even for different marketplaces. And then you could be informed via Email or Twitter and you would have a little alarm-frontend.

But this are all only early Ideas. As always I am a little bit low on time. Therefore I am doing following:
I finalize this Version first. And then I make a simplified version like mentioned above.

After this I would like to finalize the calculators first.

And then letīs see how I can bring all of that in a usefull way together.

Done!

Weīve got a little update.

There is now the reset-form-button which also stopping all alarms (but not permanently, only by clearing all forms).
If you are inside the tool you can do the same by pressing "r" for "reset".

Also you can load a "simple" version ("Stew"-Version  ;D) over the website. There is a new link.
If you are inside the Mini-Window you can switch between simpel and extended Version by pressing "s".
This should not be used on the website, because it would load then the alarm fullscreen instead of the page. ;-)

Maybe I am doing sometimes a "all inclusive version" which is simple changeable inside the same Version from simple to extended and vice versa.
But to keep my work easy I decided to do this step later. First there should be a version with all features inside.

Anyway, have fun. ;-)

Next is the "break-even-calculator".
Any Ideas about it?

Thank you Jessi, you're my Hero. Me likes the Simpel Version!

The BTC is on its way... 8)

And then you could be informed via Email or Twitter and you would have a little alarm-frontend.

that sounds excellent
Ok, but that is much much work and I do not know in which time I can handle it. Anyway much space for Ideas. I like that Idea, because it would give much more flexibility.

Hey Jessi,

ON the Simple Version mini window, have one tiny request.

The ticker numbers on the top are hard to read with Buy/Last Price/Sell labels so close above them.

Could you add a little space for readability?  See pic below to see what I mean

Thanks!

you should take a poll to see who uses the Buy and Sell high/low alarms.  i don't use them at all so its just wasted space for me.  if it were up to me, i'd eliminate those alarms and replace them with small line graphs like Clark Moody OR a good alternative would be to put buy and ask books in those columns.  maybe i'm complicating things...

The more I use the alarm(s), come to realize it is a bit redundant to have three alarms. Think it s becoming clear
that one alarm is all that most folks would ever use. Would be nice to hear feedback from other users about this.

I think that Cypherdoc is right: the idea of adding a trend indicator and foregoing 2 alarms for that. (the
ask/buy book is a good idea too, but I don't think it lends itself as well to this interface.)

I think it would be extremely useful to show price movement, just like Clark Moody does above their Times/Sales
columns with the little green line. No prices, volume, or timeline necessary... would only need to show the last
15 or 20 ticks for Last Price. This would help indicate the most recent price trend ... up, down or sideways.
Maybe there other ideas for a more useful trend indicator?

Anyhow, this is how I would envision implementing a trend indicator:

http://i41.tinypic.com/15q4uap.gif

As long as it was kept very simple, as per the mantra of the "Simple Version" alert tool.

IMHO, a change like this would raise the Alert tool to whole new level of usefulness:
As a Price Ticker, an Alarm Tool, a Multifunction BTC Calculator, and a Price Trend Indicator.

What do you think Jessi, would this be a worthwhile addition to Alert Tool functionality?

that looks very cool.  would be nice to be able to choose your timeframe (min, hour, daily, week)

from a design standpoint alone, the line graph adds alot of visual appeal.

Myself,  I thought having the last 15-20 price ticks would be the most helpful as  a quick overview
of the most recent price trend.

For time frames in min, day, hour, ect, we should probably be reverting to our regular charts.

And from a programming standpoint, I would think it would probably be much easier to show
the last 20 price ticks connected by lines on a simple white background with no x/y indicators
for anything.

Wow! I like the mookup-design!
Anyway there are sooo much things to do...
In my Opinion this should not be the next which I have to do. I really would like to finalize the break-even-calculator and then a bitcoinica-alarm (same likt Mt.Gox Alarm).
And after this put all Ideas together and make one Tool which containing ALL things and then publish some simple Tools for every one to keep every one statisfied.
Or one big Tool which can be switched to different versions inside (my favorite at the Moment to keep development in one line).

About the alarm:
As I am thinking about it really could be useful to make the alarms more flexible. Anyway I also was thinking about keeping only one alarm, because I only need one Alarm as I have seen during last weeks.
Maybe here are other suggestestions? Let me know, please!

About the graph:
Very cool. I like this Idea as an indicator.
Maybe you could click on it and it changes to an other mode where ask/bid is shown as other indicator, because I guess itīs a strong indicator for the direction (up or down)!?

More Ideas?

This is good Jessi, I think we  have more or less figured out that 2 alarms are not necessary,

There is room for something else... an indicator of some sort, to make your Alert tool Uber Useful   ;D

Ok. Sounds good to me. And I allready checked out Flash libraries for charts: could be implemented... ;-)

But first I would like to solve my break-even calc.

Has anyone tested the alpha if itīs calculating correctly?
What I want to do is to calculate if you buy for an amount of $ some Bitcoins, based on a price you fill in, and a fee you fill in, the final amount of bitcoins you receive including the fees (thatīs easy)
Then I would like to calculate the "break even" price including fees if you need to sell them without loss (including fees!).

I think itīs working 90% but in some cases it makes a wrong output in second row. Does anyone have a full working formula?

Jessi, your web site might have some clipping issues, not sure if visitors to your web site see the same thing,
but I took a screen capture to show you. Using Firefox here, with Windows 7

Red arrows show clipping of text, and blue arrow shows missing scrollbar.

http://i42.tinypic.com/dwdonl.jpg

I would look at the CSS style sheets associated with your design layout.  I think something in your web code
is hiding the vertical scrollbars. If that's true, then folks cannot  access your link to the spreadsheet tool near
the bottom of your page. (unless they are smart enough to use Full Screen command on their browser)

Hope this helps, Stew

Jessi, looks like I had a tiny alarm failure on my end (unless this is an update)

Noticed that the flashing red alert when triggered shows a solid red column, not a  flashing alert,
which is so much more better, IMO.

Hi buddy,

I just sent you 5.555 BTC to your donation address: 1AgDYTxr9FDGa7oXbVhuHxmJJALKqs8cip
I have been using your alarm clock all along and thought I was time to pay back a little.
The only thing that botheres me, is that the alarm sometimes does not go off at all or does so too late, with 20 minutes or so delay. The last time that happened was today (UTC) during the wild price swings.
Could you please investigate on this matter? I would love to keep having a sound sleep;)

For more information, pls dont hesitate to ask!

Spekulatius

Cool, thanks again for this tool, I'm just back from a walk & heard some cows mooing in a field & my brain said ah there goes $48 again - I really do need to get out more, at least it's spring time here now.

How about a version of this tool for Litecoin based on either/both ltc/btc price &/or ltc/$ https://btc-e.com/exchange
there would be plenty of demand now & growing with > 2,100 people on the main exchange

Ok. That could be a good Idea. Is there any place where I can grab the price "live"? Something like a JSON-Ticker as itīs existing on Mt.Gox?

The Idea is now that I want to collect the next days some good Ideas and after it I would like to decide which will be implemented in actual version.

Also I am thinking to make a very different version, which is working on more systems, as for the actual still flash is needed. Maybe an AJAX-Version...
That could be used on mobile-phones, too, then. ;-)

*Edit:
Seem that Bitcoin-e has an API, too? ;-) So it should be possible...

Just Litecoin for me, but it would be ideal to be able to run btc & ltc alarms simultaniously & with different alarm sounds, also you may like to sign up for this new exchange opening April 2nd https://crypto-trade.com/ & perhaps take a look at BFX exchange too: https://www.bitfinex.com

edit: yep btc-e is the main exchange for ltc by far atm

Great tool, just FYI for the site, the first line should read:

If you donīt sleep well at night, or you cannot concentrate on other things

Instead of

If you donīt sleep good at night, or you can not concentrate on other things

Makes it a little more natural (and correct) for English speakers since it's the first thing they'll read.

Also 'simple' is misspelled.

Title: Re: Sleepless? Tired? No time for family?

Curios, today I had such a spike inside Mt.Gox ticker:
Code:
{"high":11850,"low":8714.561,"avg":10143.2687297,"vwap":9943.0643898,"vol":1136,"last_all":10366.572,"last_local":10221.791,"last":10221.791,"buy":10070.16,"sell":10460.86}}
Then the Alert-Tool gave alarm even if it was set to 110 what was correct behavior itself. I was just wondering why this data came from Mt. Gox...
Anyone knows?

I have seen mistaken info in the json, where it temporarily showed Australian dollars instead of US dollars, but that couldn't account for the higher spike, in my instance, as mine was up to $300.

One hour ago I made a little update of the tool, now it should not update if the ticker-price is 1.5*last Price or last Price/1.5. In that case the last price would be used.
I hope this works as a rule for catching those errors.

Please anybody let me know if there are still failure alarms at those tool. Please write down also, what youīve seen then. Thank you!

Guten Tag. Ich spreche kein Deutsch.

I like the concept and the webpage. Kudos.

However... I went to the page today and prices are not displaying and no alarms seem to work.

Same here, doesn't work (no alarms, no current price shown anywhere). Using FF/Chrome on xubuntu, Flash version 11.2.202.280.

Yes, you are right! Mt. Gox banned me... I donīt know for what, but if I call my grap-Script, I receive an error-message.
Going to contact Mt. Gox support...
