1041  Economy / Economics / Re: Glossary of Financially-Correct Terms on: June 08, 2013, 03:03:09 PM
Hey I thought this might be the correct place to ask as google yielded useless results: On the bitfunder discussion page people keep referring to "PMB"

eg " I just think long-time the PMB is worthless to buying..... What's your thoughts here? ?
I just selling out all my PMB assets......."

So what does PMB mean in this case?

EDIT" the quote if from here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=223442.180

I think in this context it refers to a "Perpetual Mining Bond", which is a "bond" in the sense that you loan money to the issuer in exchange for shares, but unlike regular bonds there is no payoff date (hence the "perpetual"), and they are linked to output of a mining operation. Usually these have a set hash rate per bond and they pay out as dividends the "profits" from that hash rate of mining. One just has to look at the historical difficulty rate to see why these are not a good investment.

I saw a post about selling accounts, is it true that it's permitted and even encouraged?!  Shocked

I wouldn't say it is encouraged, but it was one of the forum moderators who made the statement that it is allowed.

Guys, get a room! Tongue

Thread re-railed & useful again in 3... 2... 1...

Wow, talk about going off on a tangent. That was a whole lot of useless bickering and name calling, and I am still not sure what they were arguing about? Please don't answer that question, I am better of not knowing.

Anyway, back to the original topic...

Did everybody see how Mircea Popescue just raised something like 1.2 Million Dollars (worth of bitcoins) for his new "Ministry of Games" game developing company? That was pretty amazing how quickly that got funded. That seems like a stock to keep an eye on, sort of an experiment to see if bitcoin financing can result in real development.
1045  Economy / Securities / Re: [BTC-TC] BTC-Trading Pass-Through Fund -- BTC-TRADING-PT on: June 07, 2013, 04:20:20 PM
In my opinion, trading volumes in LTC-GLOBAL on the LTC-GLOBAL exchange and BTC-TRADING-PT on the BTC-TC exchange are too low. I believe the primary reason is an excessive bid/ask spread. In a large part, this spread is due to the lack of volume-- in other words, the problem is self-perpetuating.
In my very humble opinion, which is certainly less informed than yours (no sarcasm), I think there are two problems much larger than that, which are actually its causes.

1.
The dividend is way too low.
Even if this month's dividend is a record, it's still 7.37% per year.
Now, if not for the dividend someone might buy it for the voting power, but obtaining a seat costs too much (~2400€).

The alternate way of saying the same thing: the price is too high. The people who do not own shares do not agree with what the people who do own shares are asking.

thanks, go ahead and edit my name into the post with the award you PMed me

got the coins hoping for a round 2 Smiley

What are you talking about? I didn't send you any coins, maybe it was somebody else?
Whoah. What's about those random coins flying around...

It's bitcoin, they are not random coins flying around, they are anonymous coins flying around. Unless somebody comes forward and says "I sent that", we have no idea who sent the coins.

Did I hear a request for bearish news?  Here you go: http://forexmagnates.com/coinlab-files-75-million-lawsuit-against-mtgox/

That seems like bullish news to me: any publicity is good publicity, and it is one step in getting rid of MtGox as the top exchange.

It all depends on your time frame.  Short term, getting rid of MtGox (or lessening their influence) would probably make the price of bitcoin plummet.  Long term, if a better exchange rises to the top, it could become much more stable and better / more liquid.

Their influence has already been dramatically lessened (just look at trade volume).  Why aren't bitcoins cheap yet?

Bitcoins are cheap! Snatch them now before the rest of the world realizes they want them and the price dectuples a couple more times Cheesy

(My 7 year old daughter was asking the other day "so you have double for two, and triple for three, so what do you say if you have four times?" So I have been looking for places to use words like quadruple and quintuple and dectuple Smiley)

1050  Other / Off-topic / Re: Where should I move ::) on: June 06, 2013, 04:25:59 PM
Antarctica. Silence, snow, no disturbance, what else would anyone want... Right?

All the cold would be good for cooling your mining rigs, so you can run your miners faster and make more money!
1051  Economy / Speculation / Re: Trading Hours on: June 06, 2013, 04:14:58 PM
Exactly.  Trading is dead unless you are a programmer.  Invest for the long term, or do something else with your money.

Or trade in the bitcoin market the algorithms are still being developed here xd
Think we would have a couple with all the programmers around and API's
I only saw one lol and it's alone so easy to track it haha
But probably not enough liquidity for the big investors at wall street to look at yet besides holding currency

In the bitcoin stock markets the volume is so low and outside factors can have such a huge influence, it is safer to just stick with manual trading.
1052  Other / Off-topic / Re: Poetry Contest: Win 100 mB on: June 06, 2013, 04:03:04 PM
Thanks for all the submissions so far!

I will do the judging later today, so you can still submit entries for a couple more hours.
1053  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Earn BTC? on: June 06, 2013, 04:01:43 PM
I am in need of 0.05 BTC +, how to earn?

If you hurry you could submit a poem to my contest: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=219714.0

I have not handed out the prize yet, so you might still be able to win something. Smiley
1054  Economy / Securities / Re: [MPEx] S.BBET Monthly Statements on: June 06, 2013, 01:16:50 PM

i. This is quite awful. One fifth of last month’s proposition volume, with acceptance rate going from one third to one quarter. People, wake up! There is exactly one way to make BTC on the strength of your wits rather than on the strength of your capital (be it mining gear or whatever). This is it.

How much do people get for submitting bet proposals? Maybe increasing that would encourage a higher number of proposed bets? Hmm, maybe I should go submit some stuff ...

Spending a bit of money on advertising might be a good idea too.
1055  Economy / Speculation / Re: [poll] - My Investment portfolio on: June 05, 2013, 10:30:18 PM

Real Estate never really goes down..... it might be in a bit of a bubble but in Real Estate terms 20% overvalued is a bubble, in the long run you're sure to make 50% even if you move around alot; why?? because inflation....

I strongly recommend everyone buy some Real Estate. living in an apartment is fine... but a nice house is just better, your not pissing away rent money, and you pay taxes to a government of your choice, here in canada our government realizes that there is room for improvement and is always looking for the best ways to enhance quality of life for all citizens

Holy shit you are a moron! Did you read the news the past few years how real estate has been in a huge bubble?

I speak from personal experience, real estate can go down. I bought a house in 2005, sold it in 2012 for a 70% loss. FML
1056  Economy / Speculation / Re: Trading Hours on: June 05, 2013, 10:24:39 PM
Obviously there would still be exchanges and local bitcoins hubs that you could trade at.

But taking MtGox as an example you can clearly that manipulators take advantage of the "out of hours" low trading volumes to cause massive swings in market value.

Where as if the trading was kept to certain hours when the majority of the market was awake and watching the market it would lessen the affect that the manipulators could have on the price.
Which would go a long was to providing a stable bitcoin market, rather than one that goes bananas every weekend.

Obviously the manipulation of the market is still speculation but the timings of the suspected manipulation do suggest as much.

Edit: Just putting this forward, I must admit I'm not a trading guru or anything. Just seems to make sense that closing the market during these slow trading hours would protect it somewhat.

If this is so obvious, then people would put fiat into the exchange during business hours and then wait until after hours to place their bids, thus counteracting any new coins being placed onto the exchange during off-business hours.

Anyway, who would do this "enforcing" you speak of? Nobody has that kind of power over the exchanges.

1059  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What exactly are we mining? on: June 05, 2013, 02:38:54 AM
It's pointless busywork designed to scale according to how many other people are doing the same pointless busywork.

It is not pointless, it serves to process the transactions in the bitcoin network so that everybody can say with certainty which order transactions were posted so anybody can verify their own transactions.

If you do not see why we need mining, it might be helpful to read the original bitcoin whitepaper by Satoshi.
1060  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: My XRP lost, how much do you lost? on: June 05, 2013, 02:27:49 AM
I think there is a way to cold store your XRP.  I recall asking about that or adding 2FA to the web client and someone posted some links.  I'm sure one of the Ripple guys will respond soon but why would invest that much without knowing this?

So, BTC is a better store of value than XRP, because you can put it in a secure off-line wallet.
