1221  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2017-09-13] Bitcoin drops 8% after JPMorgan's Jamie Dimon calls it a fraud on: September 14, 2017, 01:34:07 AM
On Wednesday, India's central bank said it had been looking into cryptocurrencies as legal tender. However, Sudarshan Sen, an executive director at the Reserve Bank of India, said the institution was "not comfortable" with non-fiat cryptocurrencies, in comments reported by Reuters.

I can not understand these leaders of India, many scammers come from India, no offense but true, why they simply do not create laws for people to use bitcoin comfortably, this is more advantageous for everyone.

on the subject, I will not comment, is one more person with your opinion

The same reason the leaders in India banned "large" notes - that is US $5 and $10 (!!!) equivalent:  they want to control the people in India and people using bitcoin undermines their own power. They don't care about their people or freedom, just themselves and their grip on the reins of power.  It is sad.
1222  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Core client 0.15 for Ubuntu has been released on: September 13, 2017, 10:41:08 AM
Hi, good news, Bitcoin Core 0.15 is now released for Ubuntu.

It has not been published for other OS neither in the official download page.

I notice there's a new initial step:

I quote from [mod edit: link removed]

"The first time you run version 0.15.0, your chainstate database will be converted to a new format, which will take anywhere from a few minutes to half an hour, depending on the speed of your machine."

have fun and UPDATE! Smiley

No it hasn't. Do not believe this.  Only rc's are available, although it is very close and has been tagged.

1223  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Have I lost my bitcoins? on: September 12, 2017, 08:23:02 PM
I just logged in to an old localbitcoins account and have found that my Bitcoins (purchased in 2013) were moved to another account in 2016 without my permission.

The helpdesk have been useless - denying that I even had an account with them until this morning.

Have I lost my bitcoins or can I recover them?
You probably used a very low transaction fee for your transaction and that is why its taking long for it to be confirmed. Its either going to be confirmed or the money would be returned to your wallet. Next time use higher fees.

Did you even read the question prior to replying?  It has nothing to do with a transaction not confirming.

It sounds like malware on his computer stole his localbitcoins password.  Someone logged in and transferred the coins to a new address in 2016.  Then someone logged in again as him, hit the "edit profile" and the "Request account deletion" link and deleted his account.

And it was a lot of bitcoins.

The lesson here is:  don't trust a third part with your bitcoins because they are not "yours" then.  And likewise for large amounts, use cold storage.

1224  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2017-09-08] Lightning's Next Act: Decentralizing Bitcoin Mining? on: September 08, 2017, 05:40:23 PM
Developer Chris Belcher thinks he's found a way to fix bitcoin mining – and it notably takes its inspiration from the network's much-discussed Lightning Network proposal.
The idea is notable in that it showcases both the evolving nature of bitcoin as a technology, as well as how its developers are finding new ways to explore long-established issues. For example, while the Lightning Network was proposed for tackling bitcoin's infamous scaling hurdles, Belcher believes the concept could help decentralize mining, thereby strengthening the protocol's value proposition as an censorship-resistant money.

1225  Economy / Web Wallets / Re: Used Blockchain Wallet But Didn't Received Bitcoins on: September 08, 2017, 01:10:47 AM
First double check that it is the right address. That you really do own 19Y3Mt1VJdxVcRbvzqoKxysr8EsFJV6bUM .
If it is a blockchain.info wallet that you have, then you should contact their support, since coins are on that address, so it should show it.
You can always use a different wallet, try exporting your private keys to a different wallet, like Electrum or Bitcoin Core.
I tried searching out and this wallet address is no where showing in my wallet but I clicked on COPY Wallet Address to receive the payment.
How can a wallet address be copied and receive money but doesn't show in my wallet?

There is a clipboard virus that changes copied addresses from what you copy into one of the malware' addresses. What OS are you using?

People have said the same thing since pre-dollar parity.  Then at $3, $7, 10, 35, 100, 500 etc.

It is like saying TCP/IP and domain names were a bubble. There is technology behind it and valid tech.
1228  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin Core Console on: September 06, 2017, 10:33:08 AM
You say "passphrase" not password. Does it have spaces or special characters?  If so, have you enclosed it in quotation marks or escaped the special characters?

Eg

Escape quotation marks (") within the passphrase with backslashes like this: \"

"Passphrase here"
Or
'Pass phrase here'

etc
1229  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2017-09-05]Russia is not interested in Bitcoin!! on: September 05, 2017, 04:06:25 PM
MOSCOW - Bitcoin is not appropriate for use within the Russian economy since it is based on foreign cryptocurrency algorithms, Russian Communications Minister Nikolay Nikiforov said yesterday, moreover adding the country was capable of designing its own digital currency.

“Bitcoin and Etherium are cryptocurrencies developed on the basis of foreign cryptography. Russia has its own cryptography school. I think we are absolutely capable of creating a cryptographic unit, a tool, based on the blockchain technology, and work out concrete regulations to set the framework for the operations,” Nikiforov told reporters.

The minister warned of “blindly worshipping Bitcoin,” stressing the currency is alien to Russia, as it does not use Russian cryptographic technologies.

Nikiforov gave assurances he would not make any personal investments in Bitcoin.

He said the Russian Ministry of Telecoms had developed proposals on regulating cryptocurrency in Russia.

Bitcoin is not based on Russian math. Russian mathematicians are capable of using their mathematics to create a cryptographic unit.  We don't need decadent Western math.

1230  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2017-09-04] Bitcoin, Blockchain And Billions on: September 04, 2017, 06:47:56 PM
If you don’t know about Bitcoin and blockchain, you should – especially if you want to accumulate wealth in Africa. Bitcoin is the virtual currency challenging governments, circumventing banks and threatening to blow old-school currency out the water.

Just 10 years ago, Bitcoin was another office joke in Africa. The rare few who took it seriously have made millions.
“One year and seven months ago. November 2015. That was the month I started with R3,500 ($260) and now it’s worth R37,000 ($2,800). A Bitcoin was $260. Exactly one year later that Bitcoin was $900. It grew over 300%. Today it’s $2,800.”
This was the moneymaking turning point for communications and marketing employee Shireen Ramjoo who, at the age of 32, was so taken by Bitcoin she left her job in the bank to start her own consultancy, Liquid Crypto-Money.

😂  10 years ago bitcoin was a joke?  September 2007?  I want to see their time machine.

Who writes this junk?
1231  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Best way to get Bitcoin Cash for balances in blockchain as of Aug 1 2017 on: September 04, 2017, 12:55:52 PM
I mean to ask as you mentioned in your first point.

Can you please share the precise method of how to use electron cash and what's the trust level as I have heard that you may loose your BTC for unsuccessful attempt of getting access to Bitcoin Cash funds.

Thanks

This may help - both have step-by-step instructions (the second with screenshots) showing how to do it:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2062488.0
And
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2078292.0

Thanks. The second one is more detailed and looks more easier as explained through images as well. Do you know anyone or you personally have tried it and was successful or not?

I have done essentially the steps below which seem to be reflected in the threads above.

One thing the second link doesn't mention, which you should do in my view is to move your bitcoins to a new address first.

Then once you have a few confirmations, using Electron sweep you bitcoin cash to your BCC wallet.  Then convert to BTC or sell. Shapeshift.io is easy for small amounts and doesn't require an account, but there are many others like bittrex for trading larger amounts.

1232  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2017-09-03] Bitcoin Mempool is Empty and High Transaction Fees are no Longer Re on: September 03, 2017, 10:25:09 PM
It's funny how people are being excited about the dropping fees. It hasn't been the first time we experienced a situation like this, and it definitely won't be the last. For whatever reason, the entity behind the latest spam attack in current situation can't justify spending tons of money on choking the Bitcoin network with rubbish transactions - result is that the mempools are shrinking in size. It's just a matter of time before we see the next major spam attack gets initiated, and once again see the fees go up significantly again it's a recurring cycle.

Probably as we get closer to November we'll see more spam attacks. Hopefully a higher percentage of transactions have switched to segwit making spam attacks more expensive.
1233  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2017-08-31] Bitcoin Is The New 'Gold' on: September 03, 2017, 10:23:04 PM
It's really very similar to gold, there were no banks everywhere, people kept their gold under their house in their yard (wallets and keys), there were people working in gold mines(miners). Really look very much like each other.

Yep. And we are experiencing what should be "gold rush" where everyone wants to mine and take a pice of the pie. I know guys that don't even understand what BTC is but they are investing in mining heavily because they heard it's profitable

And like the '49ers, today the ones making most of the money were the ones selling supplies (mining equip, food/power etc).
1234  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: How to fork bitcoin core to include a different POW? on: September 03, 2017, 10:20:25 PM
Compare Bitcoin to litecoin and that will give you a big jump on it since they are nearly clones except primarily POW, block time and so number of coins generated.
1235  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin core or coin base wallet on: September 03, 2017, 05:02:09 PM
Bitcoin Core is a wallet.
  • you are in control of your Bitcoins.
  • you choose the fee you pay to send transactions.
  • your coins are secured by you.
  • you have to download the whole blockchain to use. (In this case, you may prefer to use a "light" client like Electrum)

Coinbase is an exchange.
  • you are NOT in control of your Bitcoins.
  • you can't choose the fee you pay to send transactions.
  • the exchange may freeze your account, steal your funds or lose your funds to a hacker.
  • it's not supposed to be used as a wallet

Never store your coins in a exchange or third party
. Only use Coinbase if you want to buy or sell coins, and afterwards, transfer your remaining funds to an wallet you control, like Bitcoin Core or Electrum.

To clarify, the blockchain is currently 120+GB so its probably best to use an exchange IMO.
Coinbase is alright as a wallet but there have been reports of stolen accounts/funds that never seem to be recovered.

electron is a good start for a lightweight wallet, if you need any help setting it up PM me, but it's fairly simple. Be sure to note down the seed it gives you.

ElectrUM is the wallet for Bitcoin.  ElectrON is the version for Bitcoin Cash (aka jihan-coin/ver-coin).  The link above is to ElectRUM even though the anchor text says ElectRON.  Just be careful to use the correct one.

The risk for an exchange with a wallet attached is that it is a big target and there have been many hacks.  Not of coinbase itself that anyone is aware of yet.

The risk for a wallet on your computer is malware.  So if you are handling any large sums of bitcoin, be sure to follow good practices.

1236  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: problem importing key from old multibit wallet on: September 03, 2017, 04:39:26 PM
OP seems to be very confused...

MultiBit Classic (v0.5.14) generates .key files... They are generally encrypted with wallet password and result in the random text starting with a 'U2' and ending with '='

Refer here: https://multibit.org/help/v0.5/help_exportingPrivateKeys.html

There is NO SEED for MultiBit Classic.

However, there is a seed for MultiBit HD, but that will generate a completely different wallet than the one containing the keys from MultiBit Classic.

OP, you need to establish if your coins were in MultiBit Classic or MultiBit HD. They are two different programs with different wallet formats.

If it was MultiBit Classic, do you know the wallet password for your MultiBit Classic wallet? If so, recovering the actual private keys from should be a relatively simple task.

OK thanks for that. Unfortunately can't find my password, though am still trying everything that I might have used back then.  Have an unencrypted backup file but don't know if that is of any help to me? If no seed for multibit classic, which it definitely is, what is the string of 12 words that I have??

Found password and exported private keys to a file. What now?Huh??

You can import them into Bitcoin Core. Or "sweep" them with Electrum. I think in this case I'd use Electrum.

OK tried sweeping into electrum. Entered private key from file but not allowing me to continue. Cancel button is available but not sweep button. Obviously doing something wrong but don't know what. Do I include # at start and end? Also tried JackG method, with same result.  Private key starts with L, is this expected?

L means it is a compressed key (https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/List_of_address_prefixes).  Electrum can't import compressed keys (e.g. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=129661.msg1385022#msg1385022 & https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=129652.0).  So, I suspect that is your problem.

You should be able to use the steps here to convert it and then import it:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1970345.msg19609200#msg19609200

I haven't tried it, but others have.  Make sure you do it off-line, and (as always) make sure your computer is not infected.

1237  Other / Archival / Re: Need help for my private key it was in 2013 on: September 03, 2017, 02:10:53 PM
No advancement for the moment, i do nothing in private i need help from the big community of bitcointalk

But if a Hero or a legendary want to that in private i'm ok

It is always better to do it in a message thread like this vs in private.  While many people are honest, there are enough who are not that it is better to be safe.
