141  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Cryptocoins-Dice.com | BTC XRP XMR XMG DOGE | Play Invest Leverage Faucet on: March 07, 2015, 11:02:11 AM
You are only somewhat correct. Your risk in the current system is determined by your leverage relative to average leverage. If everyone is levering high and so do you, you don't have much risk and your return is about the same as if the leverage feature didn't exist at all. The risk creeps in if you have your leverage set high and then other investors suddenly reduce there. You are then subject to being quickly wiped out.
Thanks.

On the other hand, if I invest more than others, but leverage less than them, I still get a decent return if the player lorse and if he wins, I end up owning a larger percentage of the bankroll (and if the investors suddenly reduce their leverage, the consequences are les important for me). The downsides (out of a greater exposure because of a greater percentage of the bank) is that I have more to lose in case of the site getting hacked or "hacked" (as you brilliantly wrote it some time ago).

Update: excellent news, bobbax! yesterday when I phoned, I forgot to tell you of my proposal for max profit so here it is. Like to "dump hashed log" proposal that I see you are implementing, this solution is simple to:

1. Go back to previous system. Bankrage * X = max profit
2. Change the multiplier. Two options
2.1 Change X as you see fit.
      Pros: simpler
Cons: maybe for mathematical reasons (Kelly criterion?) this X should not be changed - this is above my payrate
   2.2. Add a second multiplier, Y.
Pros: in case there is a reason for X being X, you can safely change another variable - this will also permit a finer control of the max profit
Cons: you end up with to multipliers (X and Y), which is inelegant if you have no reason to have the value of X being fixed

I'd like to share some thoughts

Say the bankroll is 10,000 XMR. I place 1,000 XMR, I have 10% of bankroll so if someone loses 50 XMR, I'm eligible to 5 XMR.

Now I leverage at 4:1 and the average leverage is 30:1. The bankrage is now 300,000 XMR and my own contribution is 4,000 XMR, which is 1,33%. So, if some wins 50 XMR, I only get 2,3%.

Conclusion: leverage does impact your APR. If you leverage less than the average, you'll get less interest (and less risk of losing). I tended to consider that casino offers a 50% APR, but leverage makes is harder to get this, since investors make it riskier. To stick with a 50% APR, you must match the average leverage. If you are surrounded by risk-takers (like it is the case for XMR), you end up with something not much less risky than trading.

Do I have something wrong here?

Years ago, Our Lord visited His humble servant and told him that the passing of the century shall be celebrated accordingly, to be remembered for the centuries to come.

The Great Ancient Church will complement the Cathedral. A monument to the glory of Our Lord Almighty, it will celebrate faith and wisdom and culture.

The Church is a work of devotion and the best way to show such devotion to Our Lord is for you to spend something significant. The busy man shall spend time visiting the poors and the needy. The healthy man shall work hard, the wise man shall educate his brethen, and every man shall donate moneritos, to the measure it is not a negligible part for him.

The peasant shall donate and the highest of noble too. The amount donated doesn't matter, as long as it is a sum he will feel lightening his wealth.

So were the tellings and so shall be it? The recently nominated Archdeacon Callixtus will celebrate the regular masses in this church. Any donators will be remembered in words and praise and stone.

Callixtus mentionned to me this metaphor by the friars of the Company of Theophany : if the soon-to-be completed church is like the 10 fingers of a servant, then sphericon, who donated hundred millions moneritos as soon as he learnt of the construction, is the Right Thumb of the Church. From here, one shall easily deduce how much is required for the Church to be fully funded.
For those who cannot find the result, said the archdeacon, the Company of Theophany has course of mathematics available.

Update:
210 millions moneritos have been donated to the church out of a total of... you know it
with 100 millions moneritos, sphericon is the Right Thumb of the Ancient Church
with 100 millions moneritos, saddam is the Right Index of the Ancient Church
with 10 millions moneritos, anarchy is a Right Phalange of the Ancient Church

I suppose install a theme with the ability to tweak it to look somewhat like that is a way to go. I am also fond of the sleek mymonero design. A mix of those could be cool. They a both fresh. The current design is a bit ehem.. archaic and heavy and lacks basic spiffy things such as favicons, vector-logo (for retina screens), decent cropping of images etc.  (I apologise for being upfront, but that has been the community sentiment)

Thanks for taking the suggestion in a positive manner.  Smiley
And thanks for proposing improvements Smiley Let's continue this conversation there? http://moneroeconomy.com/forum/appearance-requests#comment-198

not so fast, even in Bitcoin there is a lot room for "improvement" (like replacing the elliptic curve that is unsafe)
I forgot this one on my Monero vs. Bitcoin matrix. Fixed, thanks Smiley

I uploaded my presentation at Coinfest Estonia on the official forum: https://forum.getmonero.org/14/events/188/coinfest-estonia-2015. The video is not available yet.

Feel free to use is for advocacy (temporary direct link to the PDF)

The presentation was beautiful, waiting for the video

Thanks - that was two days of my life spent making that damn presentation:-P
Two days, that much? I thought it was only one day, you have been discreet to me, Ric Smiley
For information, my original presentation with Google Slides. You can judge the difference.

You could make the moneroeconomy.com website look like the presentation-design. It looks very nice. I might be able to help, depending.
Good idea! I'll check with Lyt0s if it is doable. We have a test website for just this. By the way, did you notice we changed the design recently (not much, mostly font-size, fonct-color and background)? http://moneroeconomy.com/forum/appearance-requests

I added this to the HDJ. Development entry not in the development journal

Regarding gitian, fluffypony from Monero pointed me at how tough it is to do it well: http://media.ccc.de/browse/congress/2014/31c3_-_6240_-_en_-_saal_g_-_201412271400_-_reproducible_builds_-_mike_perry_-_seth_schoen_-_hans_steiner.html#download

I also re-added the GUI mockup: http://hyperstake.wikia.com/wiki/Multisend#GUI_mockup

It has been two weeks since our security fork. I think we can look at the data and call it a success.

Coins per day has returned to approximately normal with full inflation control ability:

Difficulty is high as ever. Lots of people were on the old chain for a few days, or even a week or so, thus stocking up stake weight that raised the difficulty when they got to the main chain. I also beleive that the narrow time drift parameter will in general ensure that difficulty stays a little bit higher than it was because we now reject any blocks too far into the future that would have pushed our difficulty down.

Development is now starting to return to its normal path. The last two weeks we (me, allejupa, idunk, and many others) have focused on taking care of a lot of bugs in the code, getting the autotools build system to work smoothly, and launching a testnet so that we can test some cool new code without impacting the main net.  Now we will be focusing on moving HYP development forward.

Some development items on the list:
- Get gitian to build so that we can have a nice cross compiler which will allow for 32 and 64 bit binaries for Windows and Mac. This will also allow us to check our builds to make sure that viruses or bad code doesn't somehow make it into the build. Allejupa from irc is very interested in this project, and will be testing some code over the next few weeks.

- Stake time estimator I would like to build a tool that will let you hash each of your coin blocks days/weeks into the future and tell you when your block will most likely stake. This is completely doable, your PoS hash doesn't change through time, only the difficulty level does.

- OpenAlias port for HyperStake - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=678849.msg10420461#msg10420461

- Expand RPC infrastructure and make daemon more and more lightweight - As I continue to use my odroid as my main staking machine, I would like to make RPC much more like the QT wallet, but without the resource consumption. I think that a lot of us have Raspi's and other small arm based machines and that we should continue to make HYP the best coin to stake on these devices.

- MultiSend GUI for QT - MultiSend has been a huge success so far. It has efficiently replaced Stake For Charity and greatly expanded its capabilities. Now I would like to finish this project off by adding it to the GUI.

As for point three, true, but what good is a ledger of tx's if the whole thing is obscured as to origin?
Very good: Monero presentation, Coinfest Estonia 2015 (page 3, especially latest point on miners censoring)

A similar concern with Monero (and any PoW coin) is mining centralization: if an entity can control the 2 or 3 largest mining pools, then the entire network can be compromised. It's a problem that definitely will become an issue in the future if not addressed. Again, I think this is fundamental design issue with the winner-take-all approach to block rewards. I don't have a solution Cheesy
The Three Pillars of Monero, especially the "decentralisation" section

As a rule, that secure company becomes corrupted through force or greed or subversion of some kind,  sooner or later.

You know, I think there were a lot more people interested in the 90's, but after more than a decade of failed Trusted Third Party based systems (Digicash, etc), they see it as a lost cause. I hope they can make the distinction that this is the first time I know of that we're trying a non-trust-based system.

This might be a good site/redirect for the "how do I get started" educational resource (like https://bitcoin.org/en/choose-your-wallet )

For anyone that would like to create a nice website that shows all current and future monero accounts(The wallet will be the general term that encompasses Accounts, as I just noticed Monero is using the word account instead of wallet similar to what consumers use irl, "Bank accounts, paypal accounts" , I'll give you monerowallets.com, for free(initially it will be leased so I can make sure it's being used for it's intended purpose)
An attempt: choose your wallet

CryptoNoteWallet

Great overview! Should go on the monero.cc website, I guess? Some small corrections:

  • if not open-source, I would maybe indicate "closed source", as this is a critical thing in crypto currencies (Monero Client .NET and mymonero.com as well, strictly speaking)
  • mymonero.com should maybe have dashes for all "binary" flags
  • an API/RPC column would be really helpful (only simplewallet, I think?)
  • BitKoot's CryptoNoteWallet is graphical
  • What makes BitKoot's CryptoNoteWallet "official"?

A bug on the forum prevents me to add it, I already created a bug report

For closed-source, I will add a column (this is only for mymonero so far and I will add a mention that it will ultimately be open-sourced). I won't do it with the present BBCode, because this is horrible to edit, Markdown is much better (essentially because you can insert HTML in Markdown)

API/RPC column: it would require more than a yes/no, right? Because not every software would accept any API/RPC

Similarly, I will add an OpenAlias column

Since this is a lot of colum, I will pivot the table, with one column per wallet (instead of one row, presently)

I will correct for cryptonote - mere oversight, when copying/pasting, thanks
Done!

Heh, unrelated issue, but on the Monero team, I noticed for David Latapie it says, "David Latapie is a French publisher, transhumanist"

I've never understood this Ray Kurzweil and others cult.
Ad personam:

Quote from: Shopenhauer, the art of being right
A last trick is to become personal, insulting, rude, as soon as you perceive that your opponent has the upper hand, and that you are going to come off worst. It consists in passing from the subject of dispute, as from a lost game, to the disputant himself, and in some way attacking his person. It may be called the argumentum ad personam, to distinguish it from the argumentum ad hominem, which passes from the objective discussion of the subject pure and simple to the statements or admissions which your opponent has made in regard to it. But in becoming personal you leave the subject altogether, and turn your attack to his person, by remarks of an offensive and spiteful character. It is an appeal from the virtues of the intellect to the virtues of the body, or to mere animalism. This is a very popular trick, because every one is able to carry it into effect; and so it is of frequent application. Now the question is, What counter-trick avails for the other party? for if he has recourse to the same rule, there will be blows, or a duel, or an action for slander.

By the way, you also insulted a substantial amount of cryptocurrency enthusiasts (including several deeply respected ones), since I found out that cryptocurrency have an unusually large concentration of transhumanists.

That being said, if you wish to continue on this topic (since you seem to be interested to understand), I replied extensively to your consideration on the off-topic forum: Transhumanism.
