1581  Other / Meta / Re: Does the merit system have weaknesses? on: February 18, 2018, 11:40:02 AM
with the merit system really helps this forum from spammers, and this improves post quality from forum members. but will this merit system actually stop spammers and make them look for loopholes in getting these merits?

so far I think the merit system is very good and makes me eager to make a post with good quality. thx  Smiley

Reality is no system is perfect. People will always try to cheat the system. No doubt, merit system is showing its effects. Have you observed the number of people complaining that they are not able to rank up. That already proves that it is working. This will also get better with time when most of the merit will come from merit sources.
1582  Other / Meta / Re: The Merit System is a huge success and now it's time for demerits. on: February 18, 2018, 11:37:31 AM
The trust system is more than enough. Demeriting would only bring about negativity, and it's possible that users will be wrongfully ganged-up on (and they'll needlessly lose all their hard earned merit points)

Someone gave a suggestion above for that it should be given only to staff. That can be a good implementation. However, if I was the one making the decion, I would not complicate this so much. This will shift the focus more on merits and scammers will start looking for ways to cheat even more.
1583  Other / Meta / Re: Delete unmerited massages on: February 18, 2018, 11:34:54 AM
You got your wheels on getting merit. You kinda have idea there when I was reading your thread though sounds like your asking for it. The good thing is that thread was not asking directly any merits but you could analyze this one as the same as asking merit. It may sound good to you but we have to accept the truth that merits are given to those thread or post that is meaningful in regards with bitcoin system. I do not think that it includes merit system. Well good luck for the merits. May you gain merits from the thread you started.
Do not agree with this. Merit system is implemented for the whole forum. A member is free to merit any post in any section provided is is sensible and useful for the forum. If we limit merits to a particular section, members will not reply to genuine doubts of other members in various other sections.
1584  Other / Meta / Re: Joel_Jantsen's Merit Distribution Thread (Newbies Welcome) on: February 18, 2018, 11:32:15 AM
Thanks for this opportunity. One question for you- are past submissions in those threads also eligible ?
1585  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Sports Betting Recomendation on: February 18, 2018, 08:18:01 AM
Because I want to keep my btc and have some extra ETH I would like to use to gamble. The point is on much smaller transaction fees when using ETH and if I would have to change them to BTC so I basically pay a small fortune for transactions. First transaction to exchange. Then exchange to betting site and then again when I want to withdraw.

So far as  I am concerned I deal only in BTC as my alt coin investments is very less. So that requirement for ETh deposits is not applicable to me. Other than that, I do check all the aspects you mentioned and the most important is reliability. I had shared my experiences here how I was cheated with my deposit on a site.
1586  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 2018 Winter Olympics on: February 18, 2018, 08:15:32 AM
Yes I agree with this as I have seen some athletes do well but score very low which makes me think that they could be rigged some of the times. This is why I prefer to bet on the ice hockey as its like betting on the football with the over/under goals and the lines which I like to bet on. I think the gold medal bets are good for the countries which people think will do well.

There are certain sports where it is hard to notice if the athlete lost deliberately. We should avoid betting on those sports.  I do bet on gold medals but it also requires a lot of reserach. To make good money there, you have to bet of countries with good potential.
1587  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Betting in bitcoin is legal or illegal? on: February 18, 2018, 08:12:24 AM
It is illegal only in us because they can't earn money from these sites if they are paying tax then it's fine but till now most betting sites don't have a tie up. If you use vpn you are good to go or else if you don't reside in us then it isn't illegal because there isn't any particular law for bitcoin gambling

There are no rules in my country regarding playing with bitcoins. However, I suggest that everyone should pay taxes on the profit. Also, if the government in my country made its stance clear regarding this, I would be really happy and play without any tension.
1588  Other / Meta / Re: The Merit System is a huge success and now it's time for demerits. on: February 18, 2018, 08:05:15 AM
Agreed to what "krishnaverma" posted (regarding #1,2 and 3) but I also support the implementation of a demerit system (as long as it's given to moderators and staff [only]).

That is a nice suggestion in my opinion. It will help to tackle most of the shortcomings that I mentioned for demerit system. Giving this privilege to mature people will not result in any clashes.
1589  Other / Meta / Re: Delete unmerited massages on: February 18, 2018, 07:18:02 AM
But if you think this massage is helpful why not merit.

Everything was good but this last line ruined it all. You need not ask for a merit, if the message is actually helpful.
1590  Other / Meta / Re: Merit giveaway for Jr Members and newbies on: February 18, 2018, 07:14:35 AM
Thank you for providing special recognition for the Jr Members and newbies that are trying to contribute and earn merit. Someone that is looking out for the little guys!

Here is my post for consideration. Thank you for your time.

You got one merit and rest all denied.

I need 10 Merit Smiley

I can see that you not got a merit till now. Getting 10 from same member is possible only when if you post something exceptional. For instance, a member did some research regarding members with merits in a particular bounty campaign. He posted it today and already got 10 so far, these merits are not for exceptional writing skills but for the effort that he is making. This is thread I am talking about : https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2970251.0
1591  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What Is The Best Way To Store Your Bitcoins Offline? on: February 18, 2018, 07:08:57 AM
I will make sure to update this post using your suggestions that you post here. I want to make sure that this post is a reference to all new bitcoin users who want the best way to secure their new bitcoins.

I've made some big profits recently trading/flipping coins and i want to cash out and convert this profit to bitcoin, but I'm not sure how to store the new bitcoins safely.

I have some ideas about securing my bitcoins, but I'm not sure if they are good enough. I'm only interested in ways to store my bitcoins securely so if it even means that I will not be able to spend them easily, that's fine because I'm planning to keep them in cold store for a very long time, since I'm buy nature a bitcoin HODLer.

I have an old laptop that I'm no longer using, so it's okay to use it for just Bitcoin. I don't want to use a hardware wallet like trezor or other similar wallets.

1) Download the Bitcoin core wallet on my old laptop and create a lot of bitcoin addresses, back-up the wallet into multiple CDs, copy those addresses on a USB stick and transfer them to my Desktop computer that has an internet connection. This way I'm able to fund those Bitcoin addresses without having the private keys or the wallet.dat file on an online computer.

Note that I won't be able to let the computer to fully sync with the network, so is it safe to create multiple Bitcoin address this way even if it the Bitcoin-core hasn't fully Synced yet? Also is it safe to use old versions of Bitcoin-core like version 0.11.1 ?

2) Instead of Bitcoin core, I will use Electrum on this offline laptop and do the same thing as above. The problem here, is can I trust Electrum? and also I will be using an old version of electrum 1.9.8, so is it to use this old version?

3) Download a paper wallet script and use it to generate multiple address, store these addresses and their private keys in multiple CDs and copy the addresses to a USB stick to transfer the addresses to my desktop computer so I can send my earned bitcoins there. My question is, which paper wallet script should I use and can I really trust it?

I will update this post to make sure that contains all information for anyone who's wondering about securing his bitcoins offline.

You are already taking good number of precautions and thus need not worry. I do not invest much in bitcoins and thus I just keep it in multiple exchanges to remain safe. Storing it offline is a requirement for people who are investing huge amount in crypto
1592  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Theory of crypto stability now and the future on: February 18, 2018, 07:07:17 AM
The future of currency is thru crypto. Every day a new crypto-currency is created (or multiple of them) and there could be no stop to it.

Governments and agencies would not be able to cope-up and regulate them one by one. It is truly decentralized and it will perpetuate through generations to come.

One solution for regulation is to build a control within itself to make it self-regulated as innate as possible.

It is not that hard for government to put a full stop to this. They just need to pass a law and make it a criminal offence for people dealing in crypto in their country. However, I hope that governments are logical enough to understand the potential and importance of crypto.
1593  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Can Bitcoin still reach mass adoption? on: February 18, 2018, 07:03:08 AM
Where are we now and given the current circumstances, where can we still go?

Utility - Is Bitcoin still useful compared to other payment options or commodities? What use case, gives Bitcoin the edge over other options?

Technology - What technological breakthrough in Bitcoin has pushed it above other competitors? Scaling? / Decentralization? / User-friendly? <What does Bitcoin have, that other Alt coins does not have>

Psychology - What is Bitcoin in other people's minds? Store of value? / Tech used by criminals? / Tech for Geeks? / Just another fad?

We should work on a strategy to answer these questions and to solve the problems, where others have failed. Where do we start?  Roll Eyes

Bitcoins has got the capability and promotion it needed. Now, we need to work on the shortcomings like slow transactions and high fees involved. Talking about mass adoption in my county, it will be great if there is some way to buy these offline as well like making a deposit and filling forms. A lot of people in my country do not have much knowledge of using exchanges.
1594  Economy / Speculation / Re: End of Chinese holiday... any effect on Bitcoin Price?? on: February 18, 2018, 06:59:27 AM
I don't think the Chinese New Year will have an impact on the price of bitcoin. Here, I see a lot of people saying that the Chinese will sell their bitcoins to celebrate the New Year, leading to a brief drop in bitcoin. In the past few days, Chinese New Year, I have not seen the price of bitcoin decline, it has gone up.

I agree to this. How much one needs to buy gifts ? I do not think that a logical person is going to touch his investments like bitcoins for that purpose. Monthly salary and festival bonuses are sufficient for buying gifts.
1595  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What does the cryptocurrency industry need? on: February 18, 2018, 06:58:09 AM
So I was in my car earlier, daydreaming as normal thinking about the crypto industry and how fast it is moving, how its user base in general is growing and the new and upcoming technologies are hard to keep a track of. So I wanted to create this thread for us all to share our wildest innovations and ideas because I thought it would be an interesting read for many, im quite new to the industry as a whole and want to understand both the scope of it over the period over the next few decades, what is possible? Where is this all going? Whats your wildest most imaginative idea on what this industry is capable of? What do you think needs to improve? How can it be improved? What problems do you see that need to be solved?

Excited to hear your responses  Smiley

Following things need to be done:

1) Transfer has to be instant. This will ensure mass adoption.

2) Prices need to be stable. This will result in it being used for small transactions as well. I know the returns will get lower but in the long run it will be beneficial.
1596  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The World Needs a New Kind of Currency on: February 18, 2018, 06:55:25 AM
The World Needs a New Kind of Currency, Bitcoin: Investor Tim Draper

“Bitcoin is the future currency,” he said, “Why would I sell the future for the past? Why would I go grab some weird fiat thing that’s subject to the whims of some government?”

Is bitcoin being used mainly as currency ? I see people using it as an investment medium. Everyone wants to get paid in bitcoins but no one is ready to pay in it. People are not ready o spend their bitcoins and are thus accumulating it. Reason is that there is tremendous growth potential in terms of prices.
1597  Other / Meta / Re: Delete unmerited massages on: February 18, 2018, 06:52:30 AM
Go for it, but it will kill your activity count. Smiley

Thanks

I thought the most important now is merit not activity counts, coz activity doesn't help to rank up but the merit do.

That is not correct. If you got 10 merits for say 10 posts, you will not become a member. You will have to complete activity 60 to become a member from Jr. member.

Every week I'll be posting a new video

The first few will cover the rules. The do and do nots of the site than after that they will be about the drama and news on site

Nice to see  a member putting so much efforts for the forum. I suggest you to see the response on first video before uploading more. If new members do not learn even after these videos, they do not deserve your effort. In case, you are making it for some fun, it is cool. Smiley
1599  Other / Meta / Re: The Merit System is a huge success and now it's time for demerits. on: February 18, 2018, 06:47:24 AM
Demerits the need of the hour:

Pre and Post this system in place shit posts existed, people post a different title type something else in thread, one words, completely off topic and so on. It's annoying that these threads always are resurfacing, as we the elite members feel the need to tell them it's a shit post, and like the heard mentality many repeat it.

I feel with demerits in place, all one will need to do is leave a demerit on the post and that's it, like the heard mentality I referred above people will skip the topic. These useless topics shall die a quick death, and people will realise that posting shit on this forum is dangerous.

I am not in favor of demerits because:

1) It will result in more clashes between the members.

2) There might be situations like a member giving demerit to another member just to make sure he is not able to participate in a bounty or so.

3) When a member gets demerit from another member, he may return the favor. Smiley

4) Finally, it is already hard for members to rank up. Especially for higher rank members, demerits will make it almost impossible.
1600  Other / Meta / Re: Merit Data from 503 Randomly Selected Altcoin Bounty Hunters on: February 18, 2018, 06:44:01 AM
This does, however, bring up a very interesting question: how is merit distributed across different sections of the forum? It would be interesting to know which sections tend to produce the most quality content in the forums. This would probably be very hard to do considering that you are getting rate limited yourself with just 500 users in the sample size in a single section of the forum, but there might be an alternative way such as scraping the last x number of posts from the section and adding up the merit from there. However, with the number of sections in the forum I can see this being extremely slow. I do not have much experience with Sheets/Excel when it comes to scraping, but I might eventually write a quick script to do it and post the results myself.

We will not get correct idea currently because of a number of reasons. Firstly, there are a number of members abusing the merit system, Some are still sending merits like 10,20 to their alts for meaningless posts. These incidences are getting reported in those threads like " report merit system abuse here" daily. Another problem is that initially most of the merits were given for pots in meta section in bulk. This data collection and analysis will be more fruitful as members get used to this new system
