161  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Smart Contracts - Scalability Is Worrying on: July 21, 2017, 03:55:42 AM
"For good reason, Smart Contracts are all the rage nowadays. Smart Contracts extend the utility of decentralized blockchain technology tremendously- to an almost unlimited amount of use cases. Smart contracts are a truly revolutionary technology, similar to personal computers, the internet or smart phones. However, I am concerned regarding the scalability of currently existing smart contract platforms. As more ICOs pop up and more projects are developed, the stress on these smart contract platforms will likely grow very quickly. It is not insane to posit that they will grow exponentially as the cryptocurrency/blockchain space gains more awareness."

Hey Shelby, I hope all is well. I need someone to initiate intelligent dialog on my new website. Feel free to stop by, and I will respond when I get time. You can be sure that I will not censor any of your posts, because freedom of speech is key to enlightenment. Find the link in my signature.

Cheers!
163  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Upcoming ICO's on: July 16, 2017, 04:01:12 AM
We have entered the downtrend part of the cryptocurrency market cycle.

Do not expect ICOs to be very profitable anymore (if at all). At least for the time being.

As market prices decline, people will wise up about what they're throwing money at and why.

Don't expect any and every ICO to gain value just because it was incepted.

Just about every blockchain use case has already been covered by previous tokens/ICOs/cryptocurrencies. Perhaps find one that best fills a use case that you think will be valuable, or is important to you, and support it.

Infinite blockchain use cases with infinite ICOs is effectively a crap shoot, and remember that programmable blockchains can perhaps cover several or more use cases.

The cryptocurrency market has gone through several cycles in the past, with each cryptocurrency moving up and down almost exactly in sync with one another. After analyzing (and experiencing first-hand) these previous cycles, I have found several tendencies that will likely remain true through future cycles.

Interesting read, would love to learn more from you!

Thanks, lol. Maybe register and follow me?!

My opinion is but one swimming in a sea of intelligent minds. I hope to eventually see many opinions and views there, including yours. That is ideal.

I look forward to being able to get my cryptocurrency fix without having to leave my social network.

I have nothing to offer other than several months of hard work and 44,234 lines of Javascript. Hopefully the "if you build it, they will come" mantra will ring true!

For now, I seek my cryptocurrency fix elsewhere... such as here. Cheesy

Hello, I just noticed that I have been paid for my Portfolio Wizard Badge.Thank you for this.
I hope you don't mind if I ask you here but do you accept campaign manager services? I've been reading in the forum that someone is in need of a good campaign manager.

Hey, no problem for the payment. 😁

I don't really have any time to manage a campaign at the moment. Thanks for suggesting that I would be good at the job though!!
168  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Sidechains or Child Chains? on: July 13, 2017, 04:59:19 AM
I'll try a short explanation, as there was no response yet, for those interested in the topic:

"Sidechains" are independent blockchains that typically have a kind of "pegging mechanism", where at least one of the chains (mainchain and sidechain) is "aware" of the other chain and both tokens are pegged 1:1.

"Child Chains", like the Ardor implementation, are much more tightly integrated into the main chain. In Ardor, all transactions of the latest 1440 blocks in all child chains are validated by all nodes from the main chain. That is a key difference to sidechains, where main chain nodes do not validate the sidechain (there may be clients that validate both chains, though, but it isn't mandatory).

There are two advantages of the "child chain" concept:
- first, the security is not only dependant on the strength of the child chain, because at least the last blocks are also secured by the mainchain nodes.
- second, it is possible to "prune" the child chain transactions, so that only the latest would have to validated. The mechanism is a bit complicated, but in short, the scalability advantage in Ardor is about 30:1 (a 1 GB blockchain using child chains could hold the same transaction amount than a 30 GB traditional blockchain.

Very interesting. I have not thought about this much, and have pretty much assumed all side chains were created equally (no matter if they were called sidechains or child chains or etc... a lot of terms exist.) If it is how you state, then I need to revisit the concept.

I am weary of Nxt and its derivatives though, because Nxt practically failed. It is good ya'll are trying to do a reboot with Ardor, but again I am a bit apprehensive due to the past performance of Nxt.

The slots game took foreverrrr to load. Granted I am on satellite internet, but still... it took like 5 minutes. Usually even on satellite internet websites load in a few seconds tops.

After it finally loaded, I did enjoy the experience. Too bad I was playing on a "local" instance with play money cause on my first spin:

FML, lol. I should of manned up and played the real version, but I don't gamble anymore so whatever...

if all Link database entries have been lost.
Why you are paying money to us ?
I can Resubmit the Link details

It was my fault, so I felt that I should pay you guys regardless of losing the data. If you want to resubmit the links, then that would be much appreciated.  Grin

How often will the bounty be distributed? Is the program rely on task oriented mechanism? Some programs have better proposition with regards to giving bounties in crypto space.
This is a one time deal. Yes, it relies on task oriented methods. You must perform the tasks to get the badge. I am not rich and don't have much money to spend on bounties right now.

I am saving my money for advertising, because I do not think these bounties really bring lasting users to the site- just people looking to make money. The purpose of them was to fill the site with some data so it didn't look so empty, and to make sure everything is working OK before doing some advertising to try and bring in real lasting users.

With my business plan, which is to make money from advertisements and affiliate links on the site, I cannot afford to spend much money. It will take me a long time to earn what I've already spent (if I ever break even at all). If there are better bounty propositions elsewhere, then by all means go after them. It will not hurt my feelings.

175  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / The Network Effect (why my portfolio is performing better than yours) on: July 10, 2017, 05:54:58 AM
Quote
My portfolio has been at the top of the portfolio leaderboards for at least a few days now. There are at least a few reasons for this, and I would like to dive into some of the dynamics. When the cryptocurrency ecosystem enters "bear market" mentality, holding more established cryptocurrencies with larger network effects will usually perform better than high risk high reward tokens, such as many of the newly released ICOs. Alternatively, when the cryptocurrency ecosystem shows signs of a bull market, high risk high reward tokens should generally perform better than Bitcoin. The charts don't lie, so I will not waste time proving why this is true, but instead I would like to explore why this is true.

176  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: THANK YOU FOR DUMPING YOUR LTC, PLZ KEEP GOING on: July 08, 2017, 10:37:13 PM
The problem with litecoin is that ,it was not performing for a very long time and recently made a move ,but i am not sure whether it is a good investment,OP is dreaming of a moon value of $200 which i think is not possible with the current situation,it is well and good that they upgraded even though they were not having any scaling issues for the moment and what makes you think that it would hit the roof.

When it comes to scaling, I think it is better to be proactive rather than reactive.

All proclamations that Litecoin did not need the Segwit upgrade are misinformed anyways, because Segwit allows for far more than simply better scaling abilities. For one, the lightning network requires Segwit, and also all of the features that can be built on top of Segwit/LN. The inherent features of both (not including the ones that can be built on top of the protocols) are as follows:

As far as scaling, Segwit, and Litecoin... it is more of a precautionary implementation. It is better for the capacity to be there when you need it rather than waiting to implement it until after you need it.

As far as Segwit, LN, and Litecoin... it is not only about scaling. Ignoring the scaling benefits, there are a lot of other benefits:

LN:
Instant transactions
Cross-chain atomic swaps
Lower transaction fees
Reduced blockchain bloat and load
Anonymous transactions by use of onion-style routing
Sub-satoshi payments

Segwit:
Fixes malleability issues
Lighter full nodes are possible (you can opt not to download or store signatures, and leave it to the witnesses)
Lighter light nodes use less bandwidth and disk space (don't need to verify signatures)
Miners can maximize fee income and users can more reliably calculate the needed fees
Makes advanced scripting (smart contract) easier
Reduced blockchain bloat and load

177  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Decentralized.Tech - Cryptocurrency Information and Social Network on: July 08, 2017, 10:04:21 PM
So, what happened?

While troubleshooting why the edit Link submissions user panel was not working, I found that some Link IDs were in camel case and others in slug (lowercase letters with dashes) format. I then wrote a quick function to update all of the links and convert their IDs to slug format to fix the issues. It was a fairly simple and straightforward function, so I did not test it in my development environment and pushed the update to the server.

First rookie mistake.

Well, turns out I forgot to write:
{ $set: { id: camelCaseToDashes(object.id) } }
and instead wrote:
{ id: camelCaseToDashes(object.id) }

Anyone that knows about how Mongo DB works probably realizes the outcome in the error. Instead of editing a single document (database entry) field, I replaced the whole document with the single ID field.

Second rookie mistake.

I have not yet backed up the website's database.

Third rookie mistake.

In summary, all Link database entries have been lost. Users still received credit for rating and submitting them though, as those document fields are on each User's personal document.

I have decided to end the Knowledge Dropper Bounty Campaign prematurely due to this reason, and also because I was not really happy with the quality of the submissions I was receiving. To be honest, I would rather enter the data myself to make sure everything is how I would like it.

Anyone that submitted 100+ links will be paid the full $50 bounty. Anyone that submitted less than 100 links will be paid $0.50 per link submitted. Those numbers are as follows:

Username - Total Link Submissions -   Bounty Earned
Mrvuuu - 120 - $50.00
ikhub - 114 - $50.00
Luigi21 - 100 - $50.00
Newinbtc - 12 - $6.00
Darder - 11 - $5.50
gl4dos - 10 - $5.00
jekjekman - 9 - $4.50
lolgato - 2 - $1.00
egajuarsa - 1 - $0.50
gueorguiev - 1 - $0.50
hohuan101 - 1 - $0.50
meromora - 1 - $0.50
sayyedraza - 1 - $0.50
silvercell - 1 - $0.50

I have learned a few lessons I guess, so all is not lost:

I am setting up recurring backups immediately so nothing like this will happen again.

Always test code before pushing it to a live server (even though I always do, but the one time I don't...)

Thanks for everyone's participation in the bounty campaign, and there are still some more bounties to be earned!
