1601  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Actual transfer fees? on: December 29, 2014, 06:22:41 AM
There was an 80 million dollar transaction recently, and the transaction fee was around 4 cents. Had a lot of people grinning.

As others have said, the individual sending the coins sets how much of a fee they want to set. You can set 0 transaction fee, however most miners require the "standard" 0.0001 BTC fee to place your transaction into a block. So if you cheap it up and don't include a fee, you could be waiting some time to find a miner willing to confirm your transaction.
1602  Economy / Speculation / Re: Warren Buffet advise not to buy bitcoin. Expect bitcoin price to collapse. on: December 29, 2014, 05:17:33 AM
Warren Buffet is a smart guy, some that understand Bitcoin and its potential may think the fact that he doesn't invest in BTC as stupid, but he actually has the right idea. Don't invest in what you don't know. Hes not a tech guy, so he doesn't invest in tech. Will that bite him in the ass and will he feel regret for not buying? No, the guy is loaded and he will find other traditional investment mediums to make money in.

Frankly speaking, Bitcoin is not a safe investment. Don't get me wrong, I love Bitcoin, and I advocate its benefits to anyone who wants to know, but at this point in the game, if you don't understand Bitcoin, don't buy it. Your chances of losing money in the volatile market is nothing compared to your chances of having your investments scammed or hacked away from you. Until Bitcoin is as idiotproof as credit card transactions, ie there is a button you can click to completely secure your coins, investing in Bitcoins is not the right idea for people who don't have the aptitude to understand it.

Warren Buffet speaks for the majority of the population, the people who invest in their ROTH IRAs, maybe have a stock broker at some fiat financial giant. Buffet missed the .com bubble, and he still seems pretty ok with himself, if BTC hits $10k each in X years, by then he will have doubled his money in oil/metals/etc and be just peachy about his hundreds of billions of dollars.
1603  Other / Meta / Re: Regulation of undeserved negative trust on: December 29, 2014, 05:06:21 AM
I've got plenty of negative trust. I'll start caring when there is a valid claim and its from a member whos opinions I give a damn about. And luckily, the people who's opinions I give a damn about didn't get to where they are by giving people false trust. So it seems unless I do something wrong I'm in the clear  Wink

1604  Other / Meta / Re: Regulation of undeserved negative trust on: December 29, 2014, 04:32:50 AM
You possibly trust someone that trusts him. I see no orange except on him. I have tons of crap feedback, goes with the territory I suppose.

This was the case

It doesn't carry weight but at the same time the user has some depth in DefaultTrust. Now, I see an orange -1 next to my trust, and it bothers me.

Then YOU have modified who YOU trust.  He does not have any influence in default trust.  I have the default and don't see the negative.

Don't sweat untrusted feedback - take a look at mine.   Roll Eyes

I was definitely mistaken. I had too many people on my trust list it looks like. Now, he falls under untrusted  Grin Not as bothered now.

Check here:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=trust

Make sure you only have "DefaultTrust" in the box and Trust depth is set to 2. This is the default.

You show as: 6: -0 / +5(5) for me

Thank you! It's been amended and looks much better  Cheesy

And the issue solves itself rather than giving an obscene amout of power to one potential totalitarian  Grin

If someone's feedback against you isn't valid, who cares? Most people are bright enough to read feedback and see why it is you were given negative feedback before trading with you. "D00D's a jerk, scammed me out of 21 Million BTC" probably isn't going to be held with much esteem.
1605  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: How to check total watts a breaker box has goin to it. on: December 28, 2014, 04:25:22 AM
I am trying to work on finding best spot for miners in a few different spaces.  I have 2 wires coming to house and a building from electrical pole.

Is there a way to hook up a multimeter to see what total watts are going to a breaker box? (I'm not wanting to see amount used but amount that could be used there)

If your residence is up to code, you should just be able to calculate the wattage based on your breakers and your country's standard voltage. Volts x Amps = Watts. Depending on what country you live in, you use 110/120V or 220-240V and standard breakers are 15/20 Amp or 40 Amp for utility breakers.

A standard house in the US for example will have plenty of 15 Amp breakers, at 110V and can supply a max of 1650 Watts. Although, like all things electrical, its not a good idea to use a max for any period of time.
1606  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S5: The New Standard, 0.51J/G, 1155GH, Jan 8th shipping [Sales Open] on: December 26, 2014, 11:35:56 PM
Please keep in mind people, this is Bitmain's product discussion thread. While excessive harassing of members isn't acceptable under any circumstance, it is especially not acceptable in someone else's thread. I'm sure Dogie doesn't mind talking to reasonable people about whatever issues people are having with him, but please do not do it here. Don't clutter the thread making information harder to access for those that want it.

I am interested. How much would you be willing to take for it, including a PSU(s) to get it running? (and shipping to the carolinas).

1611  Economy / Reputation / Re: Phinneus Gage is a paid scammer and whatnut, et al. on: December 25, 2014, 06:44:00 AM
TLDR: Bruno is a jerk for calling out Asic producers, and keeping newbies from buying their products. I'm not sure which in particular, but BFL is the one that comes to mind that he has butted heads with the most. *Cough* Had you ordered from BFL, you would have been scammed. I think a thank you is probably in order lol.
1612  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Merry Christmas... but the last block was ~40 minutes ago. on: December 25, 2014, 12:46:32 AM
Waiting for confirmations isn't something that you necessarily need to do though. If you are buying/selling something very large, sure. Do I expect starbucks to wait for confirmations before handing you a beverage? Nope. Maybe a car dealership, and thats a big maybe. Double spending requires so many resources that it would be cheaper to just buy the car than to try and double spend. Even if you are successful, I think the net cost would probably be higher for the doublespend.

If you are buying a house with bitcoins, get some dinner or something with the buyer/seller while you wait for the confirmations.
1613  Other / Meta / Re: Why was the Newbie-Only Section deleted? on: December 25, 2014, 12:40:35 AM
Newbie Jail never kept spammers out, it just kept real newbies out of the conversations. People that are making accounts to spam have no problem waiting a few hours before being allowed to spam, they just create accounts in 6 hour shifts/waves. What newbie jail did was discourage the person with the intention of looking around at all of the boards and finding topics that actually interest or apply to them. If someone hears about Bitcoin and wants to come learn more, they should be able to without being penalized. If we penalize real newbies, they might just lose interest and leave.

The solution is people need to become more responsible with their money. Who gives their money to a stranger over the internet anyway? The only true measure of trust has nothing to do with the green numbers next to your name, it has solely to do with self interest. Over the internet you can't judge someone's character. All you can do is count on the fact that people wont scam you if they stand to make more by operating legitimately. Business owners for example (with some exceptions) if they are making 5 BTC per week operating legitimately, chances are they aren't going to scam me out of a few coins. Same thing with some long standing members here who run small businesses, services, escrow services, etc.

The status of someone's account, newbie, legendary, etc it doesn't make a huge amount of difference, besides the fact that accounts have some value here which plays into the self interest equation. Just stop sending Bitcoins to people without using escrow unless you can 100% safely rationalize trusting them with your money. If there is any doubt, escrow.
1614  Other / Meta / Re: Moderator please remove post about Counterfeit PAMP Suisse Gold Bars on: December 24, 2014, 09:44:18 PM
.....

Since you are here, can you explain briefly why fake Morgans are off limits and PAMP Suisse bars are okay? You don't owe an explanation to anyone, but I am curious why you would sell these and still be against others selling fake Morgans on Bitcointalk.

As Tecshare has explained 30 times in this thread, there are anti counterfeiting acts to prevent people from counterfeiting Currency 1 oz Silver/gold Eagles for example are coins created by the US mint with a face value in USD on them possession of counterfeit currency is a crime, however Pamp bars are not created by any government mint, and have no legal tender face value on them, therefore they do not fall under currency counterfeiting laws. Morgan Silver Dollars are legal tender in the US, fake Morgans are the same as fake $1 Bills. When I ordered more metal testing chemicals off of Amazon, it came with fake bullion to help newbies to metal testing learn to spot the difference in chemical colors when dealing with real vs fake bullion. As long as you aren't trying to pass fake bullion off as real. Legitimate companies offer them for a variety of reason.

If you know the case of Norfed, the owner got busted for counterfeiting because he put $ values on the rounds he made, however private mints that make bullion aren't shut down because they don't put any face value on their bullion. The difference between a coin and a round, is a coin is legal tender, bullion comes in rounds/bars/ingots
1615  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Sharks nine times more likely to kill men than women, study says on: December 23, 2014, 11:47:01 PM
I came in here because I thought you meant that Sharks are 9x more likely to kill a man than a woman, as in for every man a woman kills, 9 more are killed by sharks.  Little bit disappointed, I wanted to read that study.
1616  Other / Meta / Re: Delete Account on: December 23, 2014, 06:05:32 PM
The admin's don't delete or lock accounts so your best bet is to just forget about the account and abandon it. You could also sell it for a little btc if you wanted.

This, if you are 100% sure you want to leave the account, just change the password to something that is incredibly secure that you won't remember.
1617  Other / Meta / Re: can we ban ripple? on: December 23, 2014, 06:04:24 PM
Can we ban ripple? Yes
Are we going to? No

Salty, this answer is succinct, to the point, understandable.  It's also quite terse.  Can you weigh in a bit more about your motivation?  Or some of the ideas posted about providing ripple with it's own subforum or moving it to alts?

As far as its classification, Ripple it is not technically a cryptocurrency, but it is close enough to stay in the Alt Currencies section. Adding new subforums is not done unless it is completely necessary. Unnecessary subdivision makes the forum clunky and cumbersome. It would be like adding an Amazon section for all things having to do with Amazon, an Ebay section, etc. Eventually it would take 30 minutes just to navigate to subforums.

As far as not banning it, we don't ban anything unless it is completely necessary. Censoring technology is a good way to retard growth in related fields. Alt coins explore different options in cryptocurrencies, ripple is another system thats out there doing whatever it is doing. As this is a Bitcoin forum, we won't especially cater to Alt Coins or Ripple, but we will give them the basic courtesy of allowing discussion of them in their own out of the way section (Alt Currencies). I don't care one way or another for ripple, but I think its just fair to let it run its course. Paypal deals in fiat and is a central company, censoring Paypal would be far more appropriate than censoring Ripple, as they have even less to do with the central Bitcoin theme of the forum.

In short, we don't ban/censor anything that doesn't by all accounts need to be banned. The only things that are banned here (that I can think of)
1) Anything illegal in the OP's jurisdiction, baring completely unreasonable laws. If it is illegal to sell your used socks in your country, we probably don't care here.
2) Death threats
3) Spam

The only Alt Coin or anything similar that was ever banned (temporarily) was Scrypt Bitcoin just called Bitcoin but using the Scrypt algorithm. That was because I received a warning from the developer that downloading (Scrypt) Bitcoin could overwrite Bitcoin wallet data if you installed it because they had the same name. That was later tested and found to be untrue, so it was unbanned.
1618  Other / Meta / Re: Moderator please remove post about Counterfeit PAMP Suisse Gold Bars on: December 23, 2014, 03:31:33 PM
Selling fake bars under correct pretenses is not illegal. If Johnniewalker tells you they are fake, its not illegal (since they are not Government issue coins like gold eagles, gold maples, etc)

@above you better be careful selling those fakes on craigslist as real, there are some really hyperinflated penalties that were designed to stop scammy jewelers. 20+ years you can be incarcerated for trying to sell fake bullion as fake. Frankly you are better off dealing drugs, less strict penalties. (Not that I advocate you do either)

1619  Other / Meta / Re: Spondoolies Spam on: December 20, 2014, 07:17:25 PM
So Hardware was flooded for 3-4 days. It's not such a big deal.

As of this post, 7/10 review threads, +the SP20 unofficial thread, + the spondoolies thread are all active on the front page. In part, because you are being active in each and all of them.

I'll say it again, does anyone have an objection to Bitmain paying for 50 review threads? Seems not.

7 of the Legendary reviews are on the 2nd/3rd page. It seems that the unofficial review and support threads are staying bumped though.
1620  Other / Meta / Re: Spondoolies Spam on: December 20, 2014, 07:08:34 PM
The problem with company specific boards, is Asic producers are being created and disappearing every other day. Half of the companies that promise to produce Asics just kind of don't. Not only would it be a big time waster for Theymos to constantly be adding specific manufacturer boards, but this discussion will inevitably end with someone suggesting that there is a Asic producer vetting procedure, which would be unfair to startup companies (the ones that aren't scammers) and that would give some sort of Forum based bias towards those that are "vetted" then if one of those companies runs off with people's money, people will be complaining. As much as you might be surprised, moderators don't really like big blowouts in the Meta section.

When I first saw the stipulations of the giveaway, that 10 separate threads would be created, I figured it might be an issue, but I won't get involved in anything relating to this as it would be unfair for me to do so, so the other moderators can decide what happens here. In my opinion anyway, since the majority of the reviews have a good deal of overlap, the most detailed review or reviews will stay afloat in the first page or pages, and the others that are already encapsulated into the more popular reviews will sink away.
