1681  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger Firmware 1.6.0 - Known Bugs and Issues on: February 17, 2020, 07:24:41 PM
HCP thanks.  Okay so based on your long response... i think my best solution is

Do not do any firmware update or anything like that with my nano s since im outside the US.  Once I go back to the US, install the Recovery Check app... then type in my 24 word seed... to see if it confirms right?  It ask to type all 24 words right?  And if its correct, it would say correct?  If not, then incorrect right?

So once it says correct... then i can update to firmware 1.6.  So if anything happens, well i have my 24 word seed and then order another nano ledger s while in the US... you agree this is my best solution here?  Again, my worry here initially wasn't the firmware 1.6 issue with the reset... it had to do with my ledger nano s screen being much dimmer when i didn't connect it to my laptop for a few months.  Like the letters use to be much more darker and now its much more lighter.  But do you think i should try to change the display brightness or do you think i should not bother with that?  Obviously i do this after i confirm my 24 word seed is correct first though.  Yea i never did the reset thing to first confirm my seed is right but i checked all the 24 words many times.  You want me to post a picture on this thread or my other thread so maybe you guys can tell if its a defect or not?  I posted on reddit and one person said thats a defect.  I mean, i know for sure the letters were not this light on the screen when i previously used it.  Im 100% sure on this.  The recovery seed app you talked about... i believe you or someone else mentioned this a while back on this.  I never tried this because i thought was it possible that app can be hacked but that is 100% impossible right?
1682  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger Firmware 1.6.0 - Known Bugs and Issues on: February 17, 2020, 12:13:55 AM
Yes the last time i used nano ledger s with ledger live it was fine.  My concern was if i don't update it, would there be a time like when someone created a thread that they could not do a firmware update because they didn't touch their ledger in at least few years and was in that very old version like version one?  That is why i always dont want to do an update.
Impossible to say with 100% certainty, but I would suspect that this would no longer be the case given the changes they've made to the firmware/infrastructure in more recent firmware revisions... I would think that Ledger would likely give warning if this was to occur.

The simple solution is simply check every 6 months or so to see if any updates have been released.

Quote
I thought i read 5 years somewhere.  So that is the nano ledger x then right?

That would appear to be correct, from the Ledger Nano X support pages regarding battery life:
End of life
The battery is designed to last 5 years. Ledger does not provide a battery replacement program. If battery capacity has degraded beyond being practically usable, the device can be used by connecting it to a power source using the USB cable.

As the Nano S does not have a battery, so this "life expectancy" does not apply to the S. Wink

Quote
But you would never do firmware update if you dont have access to the phrase right?
That depends on:
1. Is it a "required" update?
2. How "urgent" the firmware update was (ie. is it patching a critical security flaw)
3. Whether I needed immediate access to the funds
4. The time frame for recovery should the device reset and I needed to use the recovery phrase

If it was super urgent and I really needed to use the funds, I'd probably risk an update without the phrase. For the most part, the newer updates seem to go through OK without requiring a reset. However, if it is just a "feature" update (providing new coin etc) and they're not features I desperately need, then I'd probably just wait and continue to the current firmware.

As a side note... and something you might want to consider, given what appears to be a very large physical distance between your "regular" location and your recovery phrase storage location... what happens if you simply break the device and need access to your funds? What recovery plan do you have? Are you comfortable with the time frames involved?

It's all well and good having the recover phrase stored offsite... but useless if that is at direct odds with your requirements for being able to recover in a reasonable time frame.

HCP, once again thank you for the long detailed response.

But the nano s resetting issue, did ledger fix this issue yet?  Or is anyone that is on 1.5.5 or earlier still susceptible?  Someone said nano ledger fixed lot of firmware issue but does this mean the ppl using 1.5.5 or earlier still vulnerable to the reset issue?  Or they still are and only ppl who upgraded successfully to 1.6... should not have issue?

Okay so the 5 year was the nano ledger x then, thanks.

At the moment, i do not have to send/receive btc.  But i want the option to do that.

Well im outside the US now and my seed is in the US.  Thus im in another country.   My first issue is if i did a firmware update and it reset, I would be very anxious where i would want to head back to the US immediately because of it.  I wouldn't be able to even concentrate on other things if my ledger reset now.  I mean, i wont need access to the funds now.  I still have some money in the bank to withdraw with us debit card here.  But no, i would not be comfortable with the time frame involved because this would be on my mind 24/7.  Like what if something happens to my seed back in the US... does that make sense?

Well i would have my seed here but theft happens a ton in apartments where im located here and im in a good location.   Thats why i dont feel comfortable having my seed written down here and leaving the paper in my apartment.  There are even buildings here where they have 24/7 security but theft/breakins due to windows as i heard ton of cases here with theft.  So thats why i dont feel comfortable having my seed with me in my apartment here.

So based on this, you would agree don't update firmware till i get back to the US right?  And would you say buy a 2nd ledger nano s as well because i notice this dimmed display?

Also HCP, if you are 100% or close to 100% you wrote your 24 word seed correct... but you never ever reset your ledger  nano s with the wrong pin 3 times, would you risk doing it?  Now if i did that reset one time to make sure my 24 word seed is correct and i have my 24 word seed with me right now, obviously i would have no concerns.
1683  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger Firmware 1.6.0 - Known Bugs and Issues on: February 17, 2020, 12:01:01 AM
My concern was if i don't update it, would there be a time like when someone created a thread that they could not do a firmware update because they didn't touch their ledger in at least few years and was in that very old version like version one?

You're too paranoid, even for something so sensitive, such as cryptocurrency. Process of firmware update is something that takes a few minutes on a supported OS, and in most cases does not cause the Nano S/X to reset. Your problem is that you complicate things that are so simple, you hold the seed in another country, and persistently ask the same questions that you have already answered. Just update your Ledger or don't do it, it is a simply choice - who knows what will be with Ledger in next 5 or 10 years.

My Ledger also broke down after the latest firmware update, thankfully had almost nothing stored on it. Sent Ledger a message, but I expect they do nothing.

Broke down how, what exactly happened? The device could be reset to factory settings or in worst case you burn/brick it. In first case you can recover your coins by entering seed, and in second case Ledger has already replaced (for free) broken devices several times.

Im from the US.  Where im located now in another country, lot of thefts happen in apartments/condos.  So i dont want to risk having my seed in my apartment here.  And im located in a good area.

Well i rather never update the ledger, i want to keep it as is because my first time doing it... i had that bootloader frozen issue which freaked me out and that took hours to fix.

Again i never had the nano s reset ever.  But when i read ppl here who say they had it happen to them and others twice... that is why im always hesitant to do a firmware update.
1684  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger Firmware 1.6.0 - Known Bugs and Issues on: February 16, 2020, 11:57:33 PM
Even if you dont have your seed with you and somehow mess up the firmware update nothing will happen to your funds so dont worry. Once you have access to your seed again you can restore your wallet.

You really should upgrade it. No reason why not to. As long as your seed is 100% correct you can always restore your accounts from the seed in case of issues.

Hey.  Well the thing is im close to 100% sure my seed is correct as when i wrote it down very carefully.  However i never did the intentionally put incorrect pin 3 times so to reset it just to confirm my seed.  Does that make sense?  Does everyone does that to confirm their 24 word seed is correct.
1685  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Nano Ledger S Battery Question? on: February 16, 2020, 11:44:29 PM
I wouldn't say "probably". I've firmware updated multiple Ledger devices multiple times and never once had a device reset on me. I still wouldn't do it if I didn't have the seed to hand, but it's not a common occurrence.

Maybe not probable...
but my experience was slightly different than yours.

My device already reset twice.

Once when I updated its firmware (there was a warning in the internet about this, so I was expecting)

and the second time it was completely involuntary. I just inserted my device in my computer and poof, reseted. Luckily, I had my seed close by. I noticed some other users reporting the same problem, and it was a firmware bug (already fixed and doesn't happen anymore)

Yea for it to happen twice is very scary.  I mean if you dont have your seed ... i dont what to say.  But how does ledger have these type of bugs?  When you say the firmware bug is already fixed... u mean for those that are using 1.5.5 or the ones that are using 1.6?
1686  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Nano Ledger S Battery Question? on: February 16, 2020, 11:43:15 PM
But where do you guys keep your ledger nano s?
I have several. They are all stored at room temperature and whatever the ambient humidity is. I've had no problems with any of them, ranging from 6 months to several years.

Like if your apartment is very humid, could that cause damage to it?
Potentially, yes. Condensation from high humidity can cause corrosion and short circuiting.

Also if you want to change the brightness, its going to display right?  The thing is i never changed the brightness ever.
See my reply above here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5220750.msg53707689#msg53707689

But how common is the issue i have?
Again, see my reply above. There have been a handful of reports of the same issue that you are describing. Contact Ledger support and inquire about a replacement.

I suggest That you don't do the firmware update, because it will probably reset your device.
I wouldn't say "probably". I've firmware updated multiple Ledger devices multiple times and never once had a device reset on me. I still wouldn't do it if I didn't have the seed to hand, but it's not a common occurrence.

Thanks for that info.  Well i also dont want to put it out in the open in case.  Where im located theft happens.  And i dont want it out in the open.  But i think the humidity could be a cause... but again its already inside a fanny pack.

Well this firmware update im concerned because i read so many ppl talk about it resetting.  Again my issue is i dont have my seed with me at the moment... but also... i never did a reset of my nano ledger ever thus to test it out 3x wrong to reset it.  But i made sure i wrote my 24 word seed correct.  So based on that, would you say best to buy another ledger device and when i get back to the US, send a test btc deposit from this ledger s to the new ledger s... then reset the new ledger s by putting wrong pin 3x.  Then reset it with the 24 word phrase with the new nano s... and then send the rest of my btc in the old nano s to the new one?  I think this is probably the safest thing to do...
1687  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Nano Ledger S Battery Question? on: February 16, 2020, 11:38:52 PM
I suggest That you don't do the firmware update, because it will probably reset your device.

There is no brightness control or anything   like that.

Just plug and play your device.  There is no battery.

Something is really strange here, as the questions are too dumb for someone who bought and sent bitcoins to that device.

Someone said there is a brightness option so that is why i ask that.  Again i never ever tried to change anything like this on the device.

I bought this nano ledger about 2 years ago.  I been using it ever since but i dont use it daily or even weekly anymore.  Previously i kept btc in electrum wallet on computer.
1688  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger Firmware 1.6.0 - Known Bugs and Issues on: February 16, 2020, 05:09:05 AM
Hey HCP thanks for reply.  Yes i get the point if you mean with not having the seed with you at the moment.

I thought i read 5 years somewhere.  So that is the nano ledger x then right?

But you would never do firmware update if you dont have access to the phrase right?

I rarely ever connect my ledger nano s to laptop unless im sending or about to send.  Once its done, i unplug it.
1689  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Transfering Cryptocurrency From Nano Ledger S To Another Nano Ledger S? on: February 15, 2020, 11:39:11 PM
Hi there.  So i read incorrectly about the nano ledger s having a lifespan of 5 years?  Im sure i read that somewhere... so that is the nano x?

The brightness... so does that mean i changed the brightness myself?  Im 100% sure i never changed the brightness ever myself... im very careful with that.  Like i never went to display and changed the brightness ever.

I read on reddit someone tried to change the brightness or something to that effect... then their screen got completely dark... which is the last thing i want to happen.  If i post some pictures here, could u give your opinion?  But i took some pictures with my iphone and well in those pictures, you can't really see it dimmed but it clearly has dimmed.  Im not sure what caused it.  Again i keep it in a fanny pack and left it there for months... my apartment is humid... because all apts here are humid.  But want to know what to do right now.  I should 100% order a 2nd nano ledger s right?
1690  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Transfering Cryptocurrency From Nano Ledger S To Another Nano Ledger S? on: February 15, 2020, 11:23:59 PM
I have a nano ledger s bought about 2 years ago.  It worked fine until i notice close to few weeks ago when i connected it to my laptop, the screen display is much dimmer than before.  I keep my nano s in a fanny pack.  Also my apartment is pretty humid... where im located now, its very hot and humid so we need to have our doors/windows opened if our air conditioner is not on etc.  I always left my nano s in my fanny pack in my room for a while.  Im from the US but outside the US almost all the time.

Now im still using firmware 1.5.5 ... this was last update i did months ago until i stopped using nano ledger s for many months.  I found out right when i stopped using the nano s, the 1.6 firmware version came out right afterwards.  At moment, im still on 1.5.5.

I do not have my 24 word phrase on me at the moment.  I have it in house back in the US which i will make a trip to later on.  So right now, should i

1.  Update to firmware 1.6?  And do not risk doing this unless i have my 24 word seed on me right now.  Both times i did firmware updates like 1 year and 1.5 years ago, i did this update in the US when i had the 24 word phrase on me in case.  Thats why i dont want to update firmware right now.

2.  Should i continue using my nano ledger s as is until I head back to the US?  Im worried it might suddenly reset as i heard lot of cases like this.  And is this only with 1.5.5 version?

3.  I should 100% buy another nano ledger s now and have it shipped to my house in the US right so once i go back, well i transfer my coins from this one to that one in case?  The dimmed display has me very concerned as i never seen this ever.  Again had this nano for 2 years and i read it last for 5 years.

The other thing is this.  I have the 24 word seed written down on paper and its in house back in the US.  When i wrote the 24 word phrase, i made sure everything was correct when writing it.  However... I never did a test of it like intentionally put wrong pin 3 times and then reset the nano s.  I read everyone should always do this in case right?  Now if you do this, should you at least send like 0.00001 btc or something like that to it first to test this out?  Or it doesn't matter because as long as you check the seed and it works, you access the wallet?  I thought better send like 10 dollars to it then reset it 3 times?

Now if i get a nano ledger s now and order it... say when im back in the US and open package.  I should send tiny amount of btc from this old nano ledger s to the new one right?  Say $1 or $10 to test it out?  Then intentionally put wrong pin 3x... then reset it with the new ledger nano s 24 word seed.  Then once i see the btc there, send the rest of my btc from my old nano s to the new one right?

Again, i never reset my nano ledger s ever.  I just had btc sent to it from electrum years ago and that was it.  But i was very careful with my seed.  I recall one thing that had me confused was my 24 seed had 2 words where it was the SAME EXACT WORD.  I was told a while back that can happen.  Others can confirm this right?

So as of now, what would you do if you are in my situation.  I won't be back in the US for a bit.  Just use the nano ledger s as is when need to?  Im worried everything i plug my nano ledger s into my laptop each time because i read lot of ppl said it just reset itself just like that.

Now when im back in the US when i send btc from this old nano s to new one, do you ever connect 2 nano ledger s to your laptop?  I ask this because well you need the receiving btc address when you send from old to new nano ledger s.  But i assume you guys just stick the old nano s first, just copy and paste the btc address into say wordpad and have that program opened... then remove old nano s and plug in new nano s and then copy that address to it?
1691  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Is there anyway to use Ledger Nano S without updating? on: February 15, 2020, 09:39:51 PM
Okay this is scary.  The last update i did was the 1.5.5 version many months ago.  I didn't use my nano ledger s for a few months till recently and notice my screen was very dim compared to previously.  Had this nano ledger s for 2 years already.  I saw that just when i stopped using it, firmware 1.6 came out and i did not know about if since i didn't touch my nano s for a few months.

But now i read lot of ppl had their nano ledger s reset with the 1.5.5 firmware?  That is scary.  So it just happened suddenly?  I connected my nano ledger s to my laptop last few times... still see the dimmed screen which i wonder if there was any issue with it.

But how many ppl here had their nano ledger s suddenly reset.  I dont have my 24 word phrase with me at the moment so im not sure if i want to firmware update it now.
1692  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Security Vulnerability: Ledger Nano X and Ledger Nano S on: February 15, 2020, 09:32:50 PM
Wait, if you open the email, there is no issue right?  Its only if you download or click on something in the email right?  Im close to certain that is the case but why some ppl say don't open the email?

So basically you download this, you got malware/trojan/virus on your laptop right?  What if its an iphone?

But this can't hack your hardware wallet though righ?
1693  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Fake Security Vulnerability: Ledger Nano X and Ledger Nano S? on: February 15, 2020, 09:30:36 PM
im confused here.  So they want you to download something but isn't the nano ledger x and s not hackable?
1694  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: The Ledger Nano S firmware version 1.6 is ready for testing+Final Version! on: February 15, 2020, 09:27:23 PM
How soon do you guys update the firmware after it comes out?  Notice some ppl here say they like to wait a bit before doing the update in case.

Is there anyone still using 1.5.5?  Also i read a thread a while back about someone who could not upgrade firmware because their version was really old like version 1.1 or 1.2?  That would not happen anymore right?  Did ledger fix this issue?  Example you are using version 1.5.5 but didn't update it for a while?  Or always make sure you check for an update once every 3 or 6 months etc?
1695  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: NEVER EVER deal Bitcoins with PAYPAL (F&F too!) on: February 15, 2020, 09:12:35 PM
If paypal is this bad, then why is paypal the number 1 option or only option for ppl who sell on ebay?  If that is case, couldn't lot of ppl just chargeback on products bought on ebay or that is not possible if seller make sure there is something is receipt that prevents this?  Imagine selling a computer or expensive electronic?  What about clothes?  Or what about cable wires or cheaper products?

Also ppl can chargeback more than 6 months later?  I heard 6 month was the max.

Also if you accept paypal from someone, wouldn't you need to trust this person close to 100%  I mean if you accept it from stranger, how would you know its even this person's actual paypal account and not a hacked account.  Is there anything that helps you with this?  Only thing i can think of is ask them for their passport and have them take a picture of themselves holding their passport?  The same with bank transfers.  Wouldn't you need someone to confirm its their bank account before you transact?

But if you have them deposit cash in bank, that is safe as long as the banking day is closed right?  I heard a long time ago ppl would deposit cash in someones bank account, show them receipt, then go back to the bank and tell them they deposited into wrong bank account.  Is there anything to prevent this?

Because it seems its only wire transfer and cash deposit in bank and bank closes that day where you don't have to worry right?  I heard skrill, venmo and cashapp all are reversible.  But perfectmoney is as well?  Can you use that in the US?
1696  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: BTC/USD trading without Bank Account on: February 15, 2020, 09:03:44 PM
To US residents, best way to trade without bank account?

With bank account, its clearly coinbase/gdax and bittrex right?  What about kraken or bitstamp?
1697  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger Nano X vs. Nano S on: February 15, 2020, 09:02:40 PM
May i ask how much you paid for the nano ledger s when they had the black friday discount?
The Black Friday discount in 2019 was 30%. In 2018 it was 50%. There is currently a Valetine's deal on for both a Nano X and a Nano S for $119.

So if you are a frequent traveler, go with the X?  But by that, what is meant by it?  Like using it in public etc?
The Nano X model has Bluetooth capabilities, so it is easier and more convenient to use on the go with a smartphone.

Because you can't send btc with your nano ledger s unless you have it connected to a computer only right?  Or you could actually connect it to your iphone and that would work as well?
The Nano S is compatible with Android phones via an OTG cable, but iOS won't let the Nano S connect to Apple devices. If you own an iPhone, and would like to pair your hardware wallet with your phone rather than with your laptop, then you will need the Nano X model.

Is there a reason its a range of 6 to 10?  Do some apps use more which is why?
Yes. Some apps require more space than others. It also depends on which combination of apps you install. Forks of BTC such as LTC and BCH use much of the same code that bitcoin does, and so those sections do not need to be installed twice.

Thanks for the long response.

Wait, but was the nano ledger S price 59.99 before the 30% discount?  You say there was a 50% discount in 2018 but this was when the ledger was selling for over 129 dollars right?  I got mine in early 2018 at retail price and paid for expedited shipping cost more than 130 at least i believe.  Right now the current price for nano ledger s is already so low compared to 2 years ago.

I had no idea you could connect your nano ledger s to a phone but only android phone and not IPHONE.  That is insane.  But for even traders, do many get the X as oppose to S for this reason?

Thanks for that info on the apps.  I mean 6-10 coins is already a good amount.  Btw do you have 1 nano ledger s and one X?  If you only own just one nano ledger s, would you say its good idea to buy a backup nano ledger s now since the price is already low?  I mean 60 dollars before tax/shipping seem so low compared to what i paid years ago.  Also are there ppl that buy 2 nano s and keep like half their crypto in each hardwallet wallet... or is that bad idea?  Someone in a thread said if a person has like 15 btc which is a ton, they should get 5 wallets and put 3 in each.  That seems a bit overboard right?
