Why give @theymos so much Merit in this post? Huh He has no need for it  Grin Grin Grin

Keep those Merits for us!
They say that to quell the beast, the sources must supply it with merit for each new feature created. 'Tis a curse and a blessing indeed.

1707  Other / Meta / Re: Should Evil fees have a maximum? on: August 16, 2019, 01:41:24 PM
if the max value was the same for getting copper membership, it would not effectively block spammers
in fact it will encourage them, as they will just need to buy CM and also free of proxyban
Spammers won't stay on one dedicated tainted IP. It doesn't make sense for them to pay just to spam a few times, then get banned and rack up evil points again.
1708  Other / Meta / Re: Should Evil fees have a maximum? on: August 15, 2019, 09:45:39 PM
I didn't know you could obtain that many evil units, I know this forum has huge reserves already so its not like they need the money.
It's not to make it profitable, it's to disincentivize getting banned.
1709  Other / Meta / Re: Should Evil fees have a maximum? on: August 15, 2019, 08:01:03 PM
Its simply would be like an expressway with a toll that only real users could benefit from that IP address.
Just have an escalating increase in fees until the whole thing is paid. New users only need to register once.
1710  Other / Meta / Re: Should Evil fees have a maximum? on: August 15, 2019, 07:00:33 PM
In poker theory, you have to focus on both your and your opponents' thinking, especially in post-flop play.

When you have a good hand, you typically consider the question, "what cards do they call with?" when you're constructing your bet size.

If you have a high bet, only the players that would really benefit from it would call. Obviously, otherwise, they would fold.
So, if you have a high fee, there are only two kinds of people that would really pay it. One: scammers. Two: whales that are too lazy to register a new account. One of those groups certainly outweighs the other.
1711  Other / Meta / Re: Limit signature campaigns on: August 15, 2019, 05:37:53 PM
A month ago, I created post #51835871. You just posted #52170396.
That makes 334,5K posts in a month.
Even so, not a huge difference between the era prior to mass campaigning vs. now.

Bad traffic will drop. Good traffic will increase.
A quick look at patrol shows a different story, unfortunately Sad But it was probably worse before the Merit system.
Could be somewhat the same due to the fact that Newbies don't automatically become Jr. Members. Smiley
1712  Other / Meta / Re: Limit signature campaigns on: August 15, 2019, 05:22:12 PM
Signature itself does not do anything wrong or annoying. Only people who abuse the forum by wearing signature and spam around, with very low-quality, low-content posts are issues, not signature. Turn off all signature might have negative effects on forum traffic, and this is one of main reasons why signature will be here. There is nothing wrong or annoying if someone makes high quality, contentful posts with signature behind their post.

I believe theymos has stated before that it isn't traffic he's worried about when concerning signatures, and has even hinted that in the future they might even be removed. If my memory serves me correctly what he did say was it would be a shame to sort of remove a ecosystem within the forum. Although, I haven't got the links/quotes on me now I can see if I can find them later on when I have a little more time on my hands.
[Stats]
Extrapolating the current "average posts per day" stat rounded to a nice 8000, we get 248K posts per 31-day month. Now, consider the post totals in mid-2013 and onwards. Signature campaigns were not nearly as big back then as they are now, especially in regards to bounties which make up the bulk of the spam.

Bad traffic will drop. Good traffic will increase.
1713  Other / Meta / Re: Since 2018, what did you contribute to prevent signature ads removed globally? on: August 15, 2019, 05:13:57 PM

You have reported 24920 posts with 97% accuracy

I actually want to see a short-term experiment on a forum-wide sig ban.
1714  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: i just thought something about campaign on: August 15, 2019, 02:02:18 PM

fix your quotation.

I think he is saying that there is an airdrop component in the merits gained by some senior members when they increased rank. I was a Hero when the system was introduced, so I received 500 merits, and thus, I only needed an additional 500 "earned" merit to gain Legendary status.
The quote was surrounding his reply, because he did not terminate the previous quote with the [/quote] tag.
1715  Other / Meta / Re: Spam Sections on: August 15, 2019, 01:56:07 PM
There's probably plenty of people here who could run them decently. I'm sure some users would even accept payment in tokens, but it's a real issue when inexperienced users run them, many of whom are brand new to the forum themselves and don't know how things work here or what should be expected of them, but if we let people run them how they want then people are going to take advantage of that and be lazy in doing it. Then of course there's the campaigns that don't even have a manager to begin with and those are the ones that do the worst damage.
Having seen the mentality of many signature spammers and the rhetoric that they spout in the topics regarding bounties, it seems that to many 'bounty hunters' that they realize tokens can fail but will participate with no regard for the actual prospective success of the project. Rather, it's more like them gambling on the result of the tokens. Signature spammers with this mentality contribute greatly to the spam since all they truly want is to jump in quickly, post their quota and leave with the roll of the dice. When it comes to social media campaigns that are confined to the bounty section, this is less of an issue since the section itself is basically created to contain all the generated spam.

From a newbie perspective they're generally going to trust those higher leveled accounts.
Even the higher-ranking members will post on the "does Legendary posting ANN" threads will say something asinine about trusting a project more because there's a Legendary member posting the thread.
1716  Other / Meta / Re: Spam Sections on: August 15, 2019, 03:08:09 AM
@tranthidung Some sections are only handled by global mods because there aren't any moderators assigned to it.

Patrollers can only handle Newbies & Brand new users (correct me if I'm wrong). There are tons of high post-count Sr. Members and above. So... moderators are needed.
1717  Other / Meta / Re: How do you view an entire thread, text only? on: August 15, 2019, 01:15:29 AM
You used to be able to hit print but now that's disabled. That's what the conventional old method was.
