181  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: MicroStrategy - open with their addresses? on: October 23, 2020, 06:45:23 PM
Unlike a pubicly traded fund why would they bother making the addresses known? There's no incentive on their part. It'll be with a custodian anyway I presume and I also presume they're not too keen on letting the world know who has what either.
182  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: UK Company adopts Bitcoin as treasury reserve assets on: October 23, 2020, 06:37:21 PM
I really don't want to be the party pooper here, but if anyone is expecting a huge amount of money from this one company, then sorry to say that it's really not that much. 10% of their cash reserves are only a total of around £72200/$94,365; at least based on their June filings[1]. It's approximately a BTC7.27 at today's prices.

They just did some sort of IPO and the inference is they're using the money from that, which probably did not impress the people who threw some cash at them.
183  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Do you think this is the start of mass adoption in Bitcoin? or Nah? on: October 23, 2020, 12:38:14 AM
I'm not even sure we're in the early adopters phase yet, let alone heading towards mass adoption. How many people have had a taste of BTC? A few tens of millions at the most perhaps. The theoretical masses would be anyone with some internet access and a need or use for it which means a few billion people.

When you're up to your eyes in it it's very easy to have pisspoor perspective. In real terms it's still an outlier.

As for Paypal, it doesn't get much more in your face than that but I think it may be a slow burn. It's no use for shopping, why would you buy something to buy something? The only thing it is useful for is mad gainz. Let's see how many seek them out.
184  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Promote constructive criticism when doing posts or replies, on: October 23, 2020, 12:25:24 AM
By all means point out glaring howlers but hardly anyone takes that stuff on board. People have to learn for themselves. They may never figure out why they're not progressing. Most humans don't want advice unless it validates the choices they've already made. That's how they roll.

There are enough examples of non shit posters to look at if you want to try and improve without anyone actively guiding you. Most aren't interested.

But I've also rarely seen posts criticised unless they're incomprehensible. If your post is crap it will be ignored and die a quiet death in the forest.
185  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Poloniex's taking money from its customers to cover its loss on: October 22, 2020, 11:55:34 PM
I can't believe any deal or liability with Justin Goddamn Sun monitoring from a nearby wardrobe is going to be legit in any way. I'd love to know whether this particular shitshow came up in negotiations and was discussed at length or whether both parties just shrugged and moved on.
186  Economy / Economics / Re: PayPal to allow cryptocurrency buying, selling and shopping on its network on: October 22, 2020, 10:07:32 PM
Their next move will be as interesting as this one. Will they acquire a crypto company to partially integrate or will they go deeper themselves?

I'm wondering whether they find the numbers massively disappointing or not, but at least they didn't launch in the depths of the post 2017 doldrums. This isn't a dabble so let's see how committed they are.
187  Economy / Speculation / Re: Calling top at $16500 (Even Newer!: $2483 bottom 19 Feb 2021 MtGox said so!) on: October 22, 2020, 02:14:07 PM
maybe COVID-21 ?

Nah. You need a brand new sensation for another shock that tumultuous. That can only happen once. Second time around we know what's in store, even if another version is worse.
188  Other / Meta / Re: September/October signature campaign season? on: October 22, 2020, 01:29:29 PM
off topic: i wonder why there are so many sig campaigns with fixed payments in fiat rather than btc. Back in the day (1 or 2 years ago?) seeing pay rates in fiat was considered a novelty on the forum, not it's the norm

Volatility? I remember watching a few campaigns that kept chopping and changing the BTC pay rate as the price rose and everyone whining like mad about it. Sometimes it followed it closely, other times it was an excuse to pay much less.

I'd do the same thing most likely. Starting off with a fiat equivalent saves a lot of ball ache and moaning. Maybe the majority have learnt their lesson.
189  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: How wallets make money? It is worse than you think. on: October 22, 2020, 11:17:50 AM
If the coin's team is concerned about it they could relatively easily implement a light wallet... someone mentioned Electrum forks, that's what I used for some shitforks where available.

Quite a few shitfork Electrums turned out to be malware. Which is why wallets like this probably can get what they want most of the time. An unknown wallet is a pretty pungent and potent thing. I can see why most don't want anything to do with them, including me.

Kudos for sticking to your date at least. Most people would claim it was based on the Ethiopian calendar when things weren't going their way. Still plenty of time between now and then but we'd need some extinction level shit to get anywhere near it.
191  Other / Meta / Re: September/October signature campaign season? on: October 22, 2020, 10:35:27 AM
I keep hearing from veteran members that campaigns used to pay much more. What was the reason for that? Was it simply due different market situation, high demand for posters pushed the price or something else?

I think nostalgia is getting the better of people.

In fiat terms Chipmixer is vastly more than any other I can remember. I was in the bitmixer campaign, which paid out in BTC and never changed the amount too, and that was $10-15 a week for a long time.

Another one was Coinsbank which was effectively unlimited in how much you could post and my best haul was about $50 in a week.

There've been a handful of fiat denominated campaigns that paid over $100 a week to heavyweights but they were few in number.
192  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: [2020-10-20]FinCEN fined bitcoin mixer on: October 22, 2020, 10:16:20 AM
First thought about all the running mixers. Authorities can easly confirm that any of them is involved in money lundering. It's ridiculous to punish someone by 30 years in jail just for running a mixing service. Better to tax the service instead of shutting it down, imo.
Where to review the case? OP didn't mention any reference for the information.

Money laundering drug money was his sole intention from minute one. Creating and running a mixer was one aspect of that. This isn't a case of a common or garden mixer being pulled up and hit with charges.
193  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Luno introduces interest paying Bitcoin wallet on: October 22, 2020, 10:12:01 AM
Btw, I agree lendings those coins (how they make money) is risky, but they claim to have +200% collateral for each one of them, so this minimizes the risk of the borrower losing their money while trading/whatever and not paying them back.

I presume they know what they're doing when it comes to this, but so does everyone else until they don't.

In recent times it's been well established operations doing it. I wonder when the amateurs get going with the same claims and little to back them up. Many crypto fans are not the most meticulous or discerning people.
194  Economy / Economics / Re: PayPal to allow cryptocurrency buying, selling and shopping on its network on: October 21, 2020, 03:30:51 PM
Yes. That's the biggest plus from all of this so far. As far as I know Revolut haven't said anything about their custodian or who they are. Paypal have from the off.
195  Economy / Economics / Re: PayPal to allow cryptocurrency buying, selling and shopping on its network on: October 21, 2020, 03:11:26 PM
It's not a good start if they don't allow you to send bitcoin in and out of paypal. If they ever partner up with coinbase then it will be a good partnership and people can deposit and withdraw but we don't know if it will ever happen in the future.

Since Coinbase already have a relationship with them it seems very possible. But since you can already sell on Coinbase and extract to Paypal in a few places then that's half the deal already done right there.
196  Economy / Economics / Re: PayPal to allow cryptocurrency buying, selling and shopping on its network on: October 21, 2020, 02:53:47 PM
Confirmed by Mr V8 on the WO.

Nothing much to see here after all. If I remember rightly eToro did transition from CFDs to being able to deposit and withdraw so perhaps Paypal will do the same. I can't quite see it happening soon, or ever, though. This is Paypal we're talking about.

Maybe they'll partner up with Coinbase or the equivalent for that step.
197  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: October 21, 2020, 02:48:30 PM
I think I disagree.

Reason being, PayPal cannot take the risk of letting you hold a synthetic version of something for which they do not have a real one of.

They have a Bitlicence. This must mean there WILL be real crypto backing it. No freaking way they're letting you anywhere near it though.

Still, the Bitlicence detail is a positive thing.

198  Economy / Economics / Re: PayPal to allow cryptocurrency buying, selling and shopping on its network on: October 21, 2020, 02:38:23 PM
From the first evidences provided on the US soil, I mean BitLicence and the screenshots in OP,  I guess we are talking about the real stuff. It would be a massive disappointment if we were talking about shitty CFD à la Revolut.

Of course, no absolute certainty.

We do indeed need more details. But they may only need the Bitlicence for storing the crypto to back the things they're offering, which is of course a healthy detail in itself.
199  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: October 21, 2020, 02:34:56 PM
Has anyone thought about the fact that there will probably be no network fees when you buy something with bitcoin using PayPal?

Bueller?

Yup. Fees will be higher. So far everything points to your having to buy your 'Bitcoin' inside Paypal first, which has another fee on top. They don't want anything to do with your own actual Bitcoin. Far too messy.

This reminds me of a pet shitcoin that doubled in price on the basis of a sliver of news that was totally misinterpreted. When everyone figured out a few hours later they'd been duped straight down it went again.
200  Economy / Economics / Re: PayPal to allow cryptocurrency buying, selling and shopping on its network on: October 21, 2020, 01:55:05 PM
Still waiting to see whether you can actually deposit or withdraw the real deal. If not then all you're buying, selling and spending is a database entry. So far the only mentions are of their own wallets and operating inside them.

For most people that's probably going to be enough, yuk, and it also saves Paypal a whole world of ball ache.

But it's not going to do very much, or anything, to advance the scene as a whole. No on one buys something to buy something. Existing Bitcoin users aren't going to buy their BTC again for the honour of being locked inside Paypal.
