Today hundreds of ALT (alternative) currencies circulate and trade, each with a unique focus and innovative features.
Very few altcoins actually have a unique focus and/or innovative features. Most are simple clones or only add/change something trivial. Also, I don't know if it's useful to already mention altcoins in the very first paragraph of a "What is Bitcoin" article, since altcoins are currently still very much a fringe phenomenon.

Currencies are released into the market at predetermined rates to upgraded computers known as “miners”. Miners search for “hash set intersections”, earning coins as they are discovered. The algorithm has been predetermined, publicly understood and not controlled by any person or business.
Miners don't search for hashset intersections, they search for block headers that, when hashed twice, satisfy certain criteria. Also, I think this paragraph should emphasize that the purpose of mining is to secure the blockchain, rather than earn newly minted coins.

Wallets store your Bitcoin, and provide the unique addresses that are used to send and receive Bitcoins. Each wallet comes equip with two unique addresses, a public and private address.

- A public address is used to receive coins, and share with others who wish to send you payments.
– A private address is used to receive coins, and give others to send you payments.
This section is largely incorrect. A "wallet" contains any number of private keys (not just one), along with the associated public key and public address. The private key is used to sign transactions and is needed to spend bitcoins. From the private key, the public key can be computed and from the public key, one can obtain the public address, which is what you commonly see being thrown around.

While this page doesn't really have factual errors, I feel it has the wrong focus on what the advantages of Bitcoin are. I would put most emphasis on:
- Frictionless international transfers: Sending a beer's worth of coin to your neighbour or sending the equivalent of $100000 to the other side of the world are just as easy and fast.
- Low fees: Tx fees are much lower than any other method of sending money.
- Pseudonymity: No need to provide identifying information when you make or request a payment.
- No middle men moderating your transactions: Anyone can participate and there are no intermediate companies that decide who you can and can not send money to.

Hot storage refers to a wallet that is network ready. This can include a desktop, mobile, and cloud (accessible by browser) wallet for convenience and quick expenditures.
Technically, a cold wallet can be network ready too. If you use an offline desktop/laptop as cold wallet, you only need to plug in a network cable and you're good to go. I would rephrase this to state that a hot wallet is (always/often) connected to the internet and meant for everyday use. Or maybe change the name from hot/cold to online/offline, since the names hot/cold are typically only used in the context of exchanges or other services storing large amounts of Bitcoin.

On this page, you might also want to draw attention to the differences between the various *types* of wallets and their risks. Desktop wallets leave the coins 100% under your control, but make you responsible for security. With a webwallet, you hand control of your coins over to a third party, but for most people the security of a webwallet service is better than their own. Of course, hybrid solutions that attempt to get the best of both worlds exist.

Hey guys!

I am looking for someone to edit a few pages on my site, someone that understands the tech side of Bitcoin and has good writing skills.  Have been looking at these pages for a few weeks and they are starting to look the same so it would be nice to get some suggestions and an outside opinion from another person.

Need you to go through the links below and give a double check for anything I may have missed, can add, or should be changed.    The content is aimed at people's first encounter with digital payments.  I would like to stay away from any in depth details that might be scary for a new comer. Basic, basic, basic. But also needs to represent Bitcoin effectively and accurate...

189  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: A new look for our Bitcoin service listings! on: January 09, 2015, 05:06:52 AM
Updates!

We have added a whole bunch of pages and listings!

A few very basic pages for those new to Bitcoin

Bitcoin Service Listings

This week we have added a whole bunch of services into the exchange category, as there has been a number of questions regarding quick ways to purchase Bitcoin with credit and debit cards.

In addition, today and tomorrow we will be adding tipping services and a few new categories. Feel free to let us know what can be added/changed, we are slowly falling into place but always willing to change it up in order to ease navigation and such.

Short term plan -
This week we will be putting together promotions for our members!  This is simply to encourage everyone to try out and review the awesome innovation around the community.   We will have weekly Bitcoin and Reddit Gold giveaways starting next Monday, so keep posted!  Our member accounts now have a place for a bitcoin donation address and reddit account name.

I will try to do weekly updates in this thread to update the top new services every week.  Now that our listings are growing,  next week i will also begin emailing merchants that are listed to claim and customize listings to their standards, those not claimed we willl be updating ourselves with information regarding the services!

This week ZapChain really grabbed my attention!  It's a cool Bitcoin social media platform that encourages discussion and questions.  Check it out if you get a minute!

Our latest Press Release comes from Claro Partners looking for participants in their digital payment research bing conducted in London - http://itsyocrypto.com/2015/01/claro-partners-research/

Thanks!

Classy post on the Coinfire comment section.

At least they were nice enough to give him the exact day.  Note to Brendon don't be home on Friday  Grin

Brendon isn't in Indiana. I guess maybe they meant for that to be directed at me?

Curious as I'll be in DC then. Hear that XPY trolls, I'll be in DC meeting with friends from the SEC. Do you want an address?

That's a weak threat. Sounds like a bunch of pussies behind a computer to me.

Hard to believe it matters that it's 4 months later. Hard to believe you would suggest move on instead of dealing with the person who stole them. Hard to believe a whole bunch of shit in these forums.  Roll Eyes

I didn't lose shit. I just think the people who come in here to kick people when their down are cunts, that's all. You my friend are a piece of shit.  People know when they make bad decisions, they don't need you to come in and tell them once again.. agreed? You fucking idiot. Dumbasses like you really need to put your time to something better then devoting it into peoples downfalls. To each their own though.

With a brand Paycoin/Paybase w.e  in such deep water, with such negativity from the community that will inevitably be their niche market, why/how do people believe this is worth anything at all?

The idea is that only trolls and haters are the problem for Paycoin/Paybase. Once grandmas and grandpas - who presumably don't read Reddit or Coinfire - start using it everything will be fine.

Trouble is that I don't see any added value this would offer to anybody, let alone the piss-poor track record of promises vs implementation.

I agree with that last statement. If they start implementation and then announce instead of announce and then implement they could recover from this.

I can see where you guys are coming from,  personally can't see it playing out.   This will not stop, and I mean, there is innovation and entreprenuership in the crypto ecosystem daily. Everyday, there is a new young entreprenuer starting up. Everyday a new innovative company is offering awesome services. I have been here a little over a year, and to this day, the only company with this much bad/negative publicity while still functioning would be Moolah in my eyes, and we know how that ended. Not comparing them or saying they are the same, but to me, it seems as though any investor who is working with hard earned money, (not money that came from buying bitcoin at $10, looking for another quick gain) would even consider, considddderr putting capital into a brand with this much negativity, not to mention the entity in charge consistantly falling short of ANY promises, and blame the people questioning about valid Q' as FUD and "trolls".  No real investor would throw money at a brand that is this badly mismanaged, love to be proved wrong on that... but doubtful.

I just don't see it. Would love someone to really bring crypto to the main stream, but if Paybase is where this starts, I am very happy staying where I am.  Just don;t see it, and these scam threads, aren't really productive for anyone in here, except trying to "rid" crypto of the scams before people get taken for everything....

A side note, grandmas and grandpas, probably not the market that will bring much volume to the equation.  Maybe they have a partnership coming with lifealert (button for seniors who have fallen)?  Buy 2 XPY get a free life alert button!

Also people really need to learn the difference between screaming scams trolls FUD - and - VALID QUESTIONS that continually go unanswered!

K so we have...
  • A "business" that has a handful of cult like followers, most turning out to be actively involved in the church (ironic) and lots of faith in something that is not really proving anyones assumptions wrong
  • a handful of ripped off logos, that might be a signal for an investor, but from the inside, it has been noted as a mistake, 2 times in a row, in a brand that is supposed to already have 00's of millions invested, which keeps being brushed off as nothing.
  • A forum guiding the community that is super heavily moderated by moderators questioning other moderators, correct me if i m wrong
  • a promise for major merchant integration, which has yet to exist, and as far as I have seen isn't something that fell threw, it was a direct lie
  • ecommerce function for online purchases that requires extensive tech knowledge to use, or is non existent
  • a lie about the price floor that some deem a shortcoming, which to me looks like a direct lie to generate investments... regardless, something that was promosied that is currently 1/4 or less of it's promise and is constantly downplayed as a mistake
  • Credit card integration for purchasing XPY that charges 10%, with moderators of HT defending... DEFENDING  10% on a credit card purchase becasue credit fees are "high"... Which is INSANE. No credit issuer has ever charged 10% on transactions, and to believe or try to justify this is nuts, especially in the world of cryptocurrency
  • XPY asspirates taking down popular news outlets for literally doing their job and reporting about this stuff
  • All this defended with statements as "this is the next big thing, we have faith, Josh has a history of success

AND This is referrred to as the peoples coin? Is everyone smoking crack?  This is the funniest shit i have ever seen. Actually, better than a soap opera, that is so blatantly obvious that the holders don't matter, as long as the top is making $$, why/how am i wrong here?  With a brand Paycoin/Paybase w.e  in such deep water, with such negativity from the community that will inevitably be their niche market, why/how do people believe this is worth anything at all? This is not worth a penny in my books, but I am open to a discussion about how someone finds faith/value being involved in this situation... I don't get this at all. People are nuts. In the best event that everything above is 100% a misunderstnading, the negativity will never let this take off, ever. Brands with this much hate I do not believe have a proven track record of success, or generating investments... Well other then in the crypto community.. But like.. wow

Dude. Read the thread a little. Everyone know's it is a scam... Do you really think you can double peoples money legitimately.  People are relying on the fact that the early one's get paid and the late one's will lose their stuff. Read their terms. It's no secret. They are an "investment firm" that takes no responsibility for making bad judgement... I am now laywer, but i would imagine that is the reason the terms are in the nav bar, so when they leave, they accept no responsibility, because everyone saw the terms right in front of their face. Just my guess, like I said, no lawyer here, would be nice to hear from one though, i am curious about these things.
199  Economy / Speculation / Re: 300 is broken, to never see again on: January 08, 2015, 05:41:33 AM
Where are we headed from here?
Probably sideways until it becomes clear if Bitstamp is going bust.

Have a look at the price TA I have been doing. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=869082.0

We are in a very strong falling wedge with no real attempt to break up. There will be bumps along the road where traders can make some money. But like someone mentioned here, big money has shifted from bullish to bearish making money on Shorts or Puts.

Eventually, we will see these same players going into Calls and creating long bullish positions. And with the coins being harder to mine, you will see a bigger rally. And rinse and repeat.

Someone else mentioned that Microsoft and other big companies are accepting Bitcoin and that for that reason it will never die. I think they are just targeting a audience, and it doesn't mean they believe in the coin.

The true value of the coin is not it's price. Have and hold one or two or five coins now. And thank the Blockchain later in 5-10 years. Yes, Five to Ten years.

Marketing =)  As a tech company, or really any business with anything to do with computer hardware/software/or services, you would almost be crazy not to.  Accounting is manageable, risk is almost nothing for a merchant, set up in minutes, less fees, attract the already accepting bitcoin community, separate yourself from competitors that are old and boring, give yourself an innovative image, potentially learn some loyalty points, and referrals from educating customers who spread the word... All for, really no (or very little) investment... Volatility worries gone... just pure opportunity.

Ummm, yeah, please, enlighten us on the size of the purchase...
