Nice developments.

Btw buy orders in amount of VTR now are higher than sell orders of available VTR. Only 778929 VTR available as sell orders; which is like 6-7% of the currency.

Also RAWX, the only other exchange is going to close down on December 15th or so (https://rawx.io/en/news/future-of-rawx/)

what.cd is much of what I was referring to when discussing what private trackers offer

So its pretty big news; its especially big since it involved data centre raids and similar and also because of how noteworthy what.cd was.

I'm hoping vTorrent can work as a solution for this; incentivizing obscure files.

Will the wallet be integrated with TOR like Shadowcash?

Dear rhinomonkey,

Yes, vTorrent client will be compatible with both standard IP and TOR connectivity.

Our next wallet release will bring our core wallet to match Shadow and more.

Regards,

vTorrent

More? Don't suppose you could give us a few details as to what you plant to implement?

IoT fridge, toaster and kettle compatibility I hope!

2 years....

questions:

how to prevent cheating? any contract involved? or reputation system or whitelist/blacklist?

This was brought up by dev some time ago.

But with regard to an actual answer dev has clearly stated since practically day 1 that he will be keeping details on the down low until actual release because of:
-Previous scam (Magnetz - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=900716.0)
-People ripping off the ideas and making their own project

I guess given that he brought up not wanting his project to be a scam like Magnetz it does show honesty from his side.
Although it hasn't been the most rapid pace project from the perspective of us the dev also hasn't done bullshit announcements and tried to pump/dump the coin into oblivion.

Have you guys seen this? https://zeronet.io/

A bit different to this project, but still interesting.

Yes we discussed it a bit earlier on; it's quite interesting from a headerless tracker perspective.

Ideally vTorrent will not only have torrent functionality but some method of searching torrents (perhaps publicly signed by "known good" users for good content)

Top wallet on trex keeps creeping up, currently at 352K.

That's always a good sign.

He'll be catching up with the long term holders soon.

~11 BTC buy again.
Looks good.

EDIT: Large buy order @ 600 again.
Let's see where it goes.

Nice work dev, much appreciated feature. Can't tell you how annoying it is with projects around here that make you screw around with command lines instead of asking where you actually want the blockchain to be stored!

You can store it here now: /users/ik_do/home/videos/midgetPorn/vTorrent

of course (:

Buy orders have jumped from ~5-6 BTC up to 11.6 BTC today

I just noticed the 5,6 BTC buy at 600 sat, I also noticed the sells around 2200 sat, looks like someone is trying to prop up the market to get people to buy from their sell wall.

I think it's the other way around, some guy trying to push other people's wall down, after a while it removed, yesterday I have seen it a few times, pushing down walls from like 24xx satoshi to 22xx then remove then buy other people's stack, then repeat again

Sounds like a smart trader. Leave him in peace to steal coins from noobs.

I have to be honest and say I sold some so I could buy chicken wings today.

Never thought I'd be selling shares in a decentralized BitTorrent concept project so I could buy chicken wings, but there you go.

I like the idea of some instructional videos but can I please request the following from dev at some point:

  • Inbuilt data folder selection (some crypto projects offer this; as usually primary disk nowadays is an SSD and loading blockchain on a fast drive simply doesn't make sense and using shortcut cvars and bullshit to accomplish this is always confusing and time consuming)

Good idea, but which crypto projects?

I believe Dash does it? When you install it asks you where you'd like your data directory to go; I'm sure I've seen it either on Dash or another project as well.

...

I don't disagree with providing options for rights-holders, all I was saying that it is completely hopeless to try and claim it will be possible to stop "illegal" distribution of files.

That's true enough. Its also the reason why rights holders go after the distribution channels.

Trouble is, with every attack they force people to innovate and at some point they will find a situation where they can't control anything. Might as well switch tactics and try to influence development.

With something like VTR on the table they have effectively lost control. With every evolution of the copyright argument on the internet, they have left themselves with less and less control.

VTR, if successful, can easily present a solution which cannot be controlled. This also stands true for other projects promising similar ideas.

The main point in all of this is that it cannot possibly be seen that having anything to do with vTorrent (either via running the client, holding coins or etc) can be construed as being "illegal" otherwise the people that created BitTorrent itself would have been arrested. It's just a program. The end-user is the person who decides how to use the software.

..Simply put that the genie came out of the bottle when BitTorrent itself became popular. Discussion of legal vs illegal is pointless. Though, it's still worth discussing using the technology as a paid distribution channel.

The vTorrent genie is not yet out of the bottle.

Anyone can download and use the vTorrent client. Anyone will be able to seed and set the seeding price.

Why don't movie houses download the vTorrent client and seed their own material? That way it's 100% legal, they set the price and everyone is happy.

If I'm paying to access content, it wouldn't make any difference to me if Disney direct were the distributors. Same goes for music files.

This is where I think creating an originator seed priority payment referral mechanism works.

Just to recap my thoughts on that.

If I download software which is open source, I can sell it on eBay and I can set my price. The trouble is the person I sell it to might also want to sell it. Within a few weeks there could be hundreds of sellers and the price will go down to near zero as people will be happy to make a little money on postage costs.

So I have no incentive to spend time and effort finding good content to sell. I'm just working for others.

Protect my initial time and effort investment by some mechanism and I'm a happy little seeder, as an individual or as Sony, Time Warner, Fox, Dreamworks, etc.

You can even give rights holders a mechanism to sell direct to vTorrent customers. Give them an option to 'buy' titles and as long at the title is stored in a certain folder, the user can watch / listen again and again without having to keep paying for bandwidth.   This is how Amazon, iTunes, etc work anyway.

vTorrent could give rights holders a direct channel to customers, without the hassle of the infrastructure so they can undercut their current distribution channels while still making more profits.

I don't disagree with providing options for rights-holders, all I was saying that it is completely hopeless to try and claim it will be possible to stop "illegal" distribution of files.
197  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][VTR] vTorrent - Share with freedom | 2FA | HD | @Bittrex on: November 07, 2016, 10:54:52 AM
The bottom line for the discussion of legal vs illegal content is that BitTorrent is just a distribution method for files. It is impossible to control if people use it for good or bad purposes and it is impossible to effectively police it in any way besides going after trackers and websites that list torrent files.

First, the argument was about whether it was ok to host illegal files.
Then the argument was about whether it was ok to facilitate P2P networking via centralized servers (i.e. Kazaa)
Then the argument was about whether it was ok to host torrent files if the content was entirely hosted by external parties
Then the argument was about whether it was ok to have magnet links (i.e. lines of text) on websites that 100% hosted no actual content.

IMHO, vTorrent is merely a platform that incentivizes users of BitTorrent. That's it. All questions and discussion about legal vs illegal don't matter because BitTorrent itself is a separate project.

Especially interesting is this link: https://www.cryptocoinsnews.com/govt-realized-bitcoin-not-shut-says-u-s-federal-prosecutor/

Quote
In an almost hour long interview, Kathryn Haun, Assistant Attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice in San Francisco and lecturer on digital currencies at Stanford Law School, who prosecuted her own colleagues, Shaun Bridges, a former Secret Services agent and Carl Mark Force, a DEA agent, for public corruption in an investigation arising from Silk Road, the infamous drug bazaar shut down in 2013, stated that  the reason United States government did not shut down bitcoin is because they “recognize you can’t shut down bitcoin.”

“There is simply no way” – Haun said, “with these technologies once the genie is out of the bottle you can’t put it back in…but even if we could hold the developers of these technologies accountable,” the federal prosecutor continued, that would be “counter to the legal system.”

Simply put that the genie came out of the bottle when BitTorrent itself became popular. Discussion of legal vs illegal is pointless. Though, it's still worth discussing using the technology as a paid distribution channel.

Looks like bittrex is again sync'd up.

My newly downloaded node now has 16 connections and is 53% sync'd. Pretty decent speed boost compared to the first client.

Still not encountered any problems.

It looks like its just a problem on Bittrex's end. Since I emailed them it seemed to have fix but now its again behind on the chain.

I also noticed cryptoguru only accepts nodes on a certain point, whereas if you run the client you'll likely see more nodes than are listed.

Sent a support ticket to bittrex and let them know where to find updated nodes list so hopefully they fix the issue soon.
