What happens to those who already have higher ranks and still don't post quality post? IMO, I think some people will be content on that level if they can still participate in signature bounties. It would be nice to see bounty managers use a system on par with the merit system in order to achieve more efficient results.

For example, if a person does not meet up to a required amount of merit within a stipulated time, especially after joining the signature bounty, they could be removed from the bounty.

Another solution is to have the requirement of certain number of merits every year to maintain the rank level. We may expect that in future updates if the admin feels so.

1823  Other / Meta / Tips to find people abusing merit system- Help the forum on: January 26, 2018, 01:55:00 PM
I am sure admin and moderators are already doing the best but since there are so many members, it would be better if we make their job easier. A lot of people have one problem against merit system- that people  may buy or sell it or use multiple accounts for merit farming. Let us solve this on own.

Here are some tips to find these abuses. All you have to is to observe this page stats correctly.( https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=merit;stats )

Check these two

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=merit;stats=toptopics

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=merit;stats=toprepliesat

Look from top and read the thread heading, you will get some idea. Quick glance shows that  these might be unjustified:

1) https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2095908.msg28684426#msg28684426

2) https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2821573.msg28898587#msg28898587

You can do further investigation like clicking the profile of the person sending the likes. Like in case of https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2821573.msg28898587#msg28898587. Sender is https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=868650 . His merit summary  https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=merit;u=868650. Both users gave merits to each other. This is not a confirmation but a red flag for sure. You can report such case to moderators and let them decide.

Hope this helps. If you have something to add, post below.
1824  Other / Meta / Re: merit. good or bad? on: January 26, 2018, 01:43:35 PM
i dont think Merit can make increase quality of post in this forum because many people can gather into groups where they will send merit to each other.

If you look at the system, it is designed in a way that eventually, the merits will be i hand of deserving hands. For instance, as members spend all their existing Smerits we will rely only on merit sources. Those merit sources will reward members with useful posts (serious people). So it will get only better with time.
1825  Other / Meta / Re: I just need some merits on: January 26, 2018, 01:39:00 PM
Although i don't post crappy material i am quite worried i won't rank up to member. I am still a jr member but i am approaching the 60 activities mark yet i don't have any merits yet. How can an ordinary jr member like me gain merits? Given the fact that members need to post quality posts and other members would give you some merits. How can i gain merits if most of the post are being ignored and such?

I think member should not be that hard. Even if you help other members in the meta section correctly, you will achieve those 10 points. Some of the good posts may get ignored but not all. Many lower rank members are already getting merits. See their posts and try to replicate.
1826  Other / Meta / Re: [LIST] USERS THAT ARE ABUSING MERIT SYSTEM on: January 26, 2018, 01:32:40 PM
You just "burning" smerit sending it to your friends. Sorry, but i don't think that it's good idea. I mean in such numbers like +20, +50 .   Undecided

That will be taken for sure. If someone is doing that repetitively on useless posts, that is a clear indication of his intentions. You should report them.
1827  Other / Meta / Re: Merit - Interesting concept but quite unfair distribution on: January 26, 2018, 01:29:53 PM
Hi there,
I found the concept of merit quite interesting. I won't go into details about why it could be interesting or why it could be abuse but i will only focus on one thing in this post : The initial distribution of Merit point.

Indeed I found that the initial distribution really quite unfair.
Why? Because for the initial distribution, the current rank on the forum was used like this :

Current Rank    Distributed Merit
Brand new      0
Newbie          0
Jr Member      0
Member         10
Full Member    100
Sr. Member     250
Hero Member  480

This distribution did not take into account the percentage of compleation of your next rank.
Indeed if you were a brand new Member, or a Member on its way to pass full member in 2 days you get the same number of merit initially : 10 merit point. You will then have to earn the same merits point than the brand new member even if your activity was more higher than him.
The activity level should have been used for this initial distribution because it reflect more correctly the percentage of compleation of your current rank and therefore it's more fair.

After this initial distribution, activity and merit are completly separated but for the initial distribution i think it would have been better to use the activity as a metric to distribute the merit point than the rank.

What do you think about it?

Even if it is unfair, it is not going to change. Sooner you accept and move on better it will be for the forum.
1828  Other / Meta / Re: About Merit on: January 26, 2018, 01:28:58 PM
Only thing that Merit is bringing now is Merit sell on local board and other forums. No more. And i don't see any action of Mod about this thread in local board.

There is another positive side I am seeing. I saw a lot of Jr Members making quality posts and getting merited for those. Better opt that route.
1829  Other / Meta / Re: Merit & new rank requirements on: January 26, 2018, 01:27:45 PM
If I send merit points to someone I will loose mine ? Or it's just a like in social networks ?

Your total Merit score won't be affected. You'll lose your spendable Merit points (sMerits)

How do you get your spendable Merit points (sMerits)? and how many?.

You get half of the spendable merits for every merit your receive. If you get 10 merits for a post, you will get additional 5 Smerits.
1830  Other / Meta / Re: Merit & new rank requirements on: January 25, 2018, 05:40:08 PM

If you want to be a merit source:

Collect TEN posts that have not received nearly enough merit for how good they are, and post quotes for them all in a new Meta thread.

Can someone show an example on a curation of 10 posts that qualify someone to be a merit source?

1831  Other / Meta / Re: Could Theymos rename Merit as a Like? on: January 25, 2018, 05:26:44 PM
The new Merit system seems ingenious in weeding out spam posters and low quality posts as it depends on the reader's response to the post. Thereby in order to rank up, one must rely on the generosity of the reader.

However, most people don't really bother learning about new stuff. It's 2018 and there are still many people who don't really understand blockchains! In fact, the natural tendencies of people is to just read posts and not bother with interacting with forum threads.

So, basically at this point, I believe only the old guards of the Bitcointalk forum would actually use this system which we have seen in the old "Trust" system.

I propose that the +Merit link be renamed as +Like because most people in the internet understand that more as they've seen it in Youtube, Twitter, Facebook, and etc.

Don't you agree? I believe renaming it would increase its adoption rate.

It is hard to please everyone. If it was declared that it will be "likes", someone might have posted about renaming it as it is not unique.
1832  Other / Meta / Re: How Do You Feel About This New System?? on: January 25, 2018, 05:24:12 PM
Hello People of Bitcointalk Forum. Greetings, my name is athanz88.

With the implementation of new system called "Merit Point System" today, there are lot of emotions going around the forum right now, especially in the meta section.

You can find about it more at :
Quote

As I'm not going to discuss about it here (because the discussion is happening on the thread i mentioned at the upper line), I want to propose a poll to a simple question, which is

How Do You Feel About The Merit Point System???

What I'm asking here is only your emotion about this new system (for the poll) and 1 line of your best reason why do you feel that way. Without any discussion in this thread.
I made this poll because it is good to know the statistic for new system as it can be used to do many things. You know, data, and the main thing is because there is no poll in the original thread.

So, please kindly do this polling.

Best regards, athanz88.

P.S : this poll and the statistic gathered is only a demographic data and will not be used as a tool to object/deny the new implemented system. In fact, im happy with this new system. If this is wrong, please just kindly tell me to delete or lock this topic, and dont bash me Sad

Overall the intention to implement is to encourage quality posts. But let us see how this unfolds. I am sure some tweaking might be required in future.
1833  Other / Meta / Re: Merit & new rank requirements on: January 25, 2018, 10:09:38 AM
maybe every new user should have at least 1 sMerit ?
No good. Account farmers would get a ton of free merit, which defeats the whole purpose.

Account farmers could still be in benefit especially those who have lot of active member accounts.

Interestingly, no one has yet created a petition on https://www.change.org/ to the administration of the Bitcointalk forum about the cancellation / relaxation of these innovations?

Wait for some time, the concept is new. Smiley
1834  Other / Meta / Re: What about merit token? on: January 25, 2018, 10:04:58 AM
It'd be very interesting kind of token, more like the peer-review type of page-rank reputation system.

maybe at some point level/merit on btt is worth so much money that people are willing to trade off cost for trust...

just some thoughts...

You mean  a system to encourage buying and selling of merits in simple words ?
1835  Other / Meta / Re: do you think forum members will give merit to chit chat threads in off topic? on: January 25, 2018, 10:02:57 AM
It is possible to give. I think that if your post is meaningful and liked by the member, you can get the merit. Probability is less in my opinion.
1836  Other / Meta / Re: Vital Facts and Figures about Merit Point.(Answers to your Queries.) on: January 25, 2018, 10:00:59 AM
Q. Why I am not able to see +merit option ?
A. This will occur is you have 0 Smerits currently. Possible in a number of scenarios. Like you are a newbie or Jr member with 0 merits. This means you have 0 Smerits as well and you will not see that option.

Q- Where to check current merits in my profile ?
A- https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=merit
1837  Other / Meta / Re: [New] Merit System on: January 25, 2018, 09:58:35 AM
Well how much you get depends on the mood of the forum members. In some forums you can get easier as it is faster  to use.
Bitcointalk is a little bit slower forum for use so I don't expect many merit points, but it definitely brings out the quality.
Slower in the sense ? I am active on almost all IM related forums and I think very less have as much activity as this one.

Regarding question of OP, I am in favor of merit system.
1838  Other / Meta / Re: Merit & new rank requirements on: January 25, 2018, 09:53:47 AM
The merit system got implemented like 10 hours ago. So expect different kinds of reactions. Either negative or positive, those reactions will add to the improvements of this system.

We will see how it goes for the coming days.

How about giving incentives to an active member who is always giving his / her sMerits to quality posts. Like +1 Merit for every 50 sMerits given. So a member will not only make quality posts, he / she will also read and give sMerits to those who deserve it.

That will be very difficult to track for moderators. So far as giving Smerits is concerned, there is no point in storing the. It is mentioned that they may be nullified if not used for long term.
1839  Other / Meta / Re: Merit & new rank requirements on: January 25, 2018, 07:49:23 AM
This method of awarding merit to quality and contstructive post will surely increase the level of good posting in the forum,

i but i do feel that there should be demerit as well for post that are considered "shittypost" or "spamming post" rather than negative trust to such post,

Having some members able to generate merit from nothing to some certain limit, hope this wont be takeb advantage of by such members.

Implementing  a lot of features at one time can result in confusion among the members. It is better to see how members respond to this and then make additional changes as required.
1840  Other / Meta / Re: Vital Facts and Figures about Merit Point.(Answers to your Queries.) on: January 25, 2018, 07:45:15 AM
How many sendable merits are given by default to different rank levels ? Shouldn't be half of merit points as declared in official thread ?
