But essentially once btc cracks 💯 k cheapest fee of 1 sat ends up with a small transaction fee of 16 cents

which compared to handing a dunkin donuts clerk a few bucks is not cost effective.

part of the high fees is btc is 64k and a sat is not cheap anymore.

so if btc goes to 640k  all fees are at least one dollar which is okay for a $10,000 worth of btc to bitmain but not okay for buying a two dollar coffee.

ltc and doge are solid pow and fill in for small purchases pretty much perfectly.

Yeah, you are right (in some way) but i personally think this is a reminder for BTC 2nd level solutions, i am not sure if crypto diversity, which i think we have way too much nowadays, may service as good for longer - or broader use.

I bought miners back in 2017 and BTC crashed and it didn't make sense to even start them so I offloaded them at a huge loss, so I understand the possible difficulties. But I mean if you were mining 6 months ago I don't see what is worse now.

Yeah you're right about the media, well about subjects like this I don't even think it's malice, they just don't care enough to know what they're talking about. I'm knowledgeable in aviation, as an amateur but talking to professionals etc., and it's always funny to hear about the Boeing 787 MAX (doesn't exist) or the Airbus 747...

Funny aviation insights Smiley
As i tried to say, if you plan ahead for the halving(s) and difficulty rise as a miner, preferably in a rather pessimistic way, you should be safe. If one runs his business optimistically in a high-risk manner, well who would he want to blame?
I also share your opinion on the media, they also don't care what they are starting off sometimes, too. Carelessness was undermining quality journalism, but if you ask me, the whole world is slowly going stupid (know the movie "Idiocracy?" - that's what i'm talking about). A tiny percentage of "black sheep" media outlets do try to manipulate for whatever reason, in fact. If you look at how Russia manipulated EU politics, and also the US votes... Bit scary, in the face of coming (de?)generations, imo.

and if you are in USA zelle is fine up to $1000 usd.

frankly sending btc on the main chain for any thing under 1000 is dumb..

LN may get better eventually, but btc is much more a buy and hodl store of wealth than anyother thing.

I use zelle for nocoiner people
I use doge and ltc for small sends as it is easier than LN

I use main chain for large purchases of mining gear.

Spend $, hoard BTC. It's the best way.

I'm surely fine with that, but what the fee/tx RUNE (iirc) madness does (aside from being a stupid game), is:

1. slowing adoption (even if companies offer LN, when they regularly sync to the main chain, the fees are more of a loss)
2. degrading performance (from a use-case-of view, not a nonsense-case-like-RUNE-of view)
3. bring bad news about BTC, which is not always bad, as we know, but makes new investors overthink their planned investments.

Look at it like that: Cars are made for bringing you from A to B in a convenient, fast and personal way. Now, someone propagates a stupid trend (remember one or the other challenge hype)to attach your household waste to random cars, to get it away. Would you feel good if your and every other's car is driving around with litter bags tied to their back several times a day? You'd have to get rid of the stuff at your own cost, effort and time.
I would be annoyed as fuck, honestly. But this is just what is happening, Gen-Z-ers are encouraged to tie their waste to Bitcoin blocks by someone exploiting that stupid Ordinals concept, just because it hasn't got any other valuable use.
This is what happens if developers don't overthink the consequences of their solutions. You know the old saying "the solution became the problem"? (or something like that)

I may sound angry, but i am just feeling a bit surprised, but not in a positive way.
Opportunism, like using shitcoins, including fiat money, seems to help to get by, but who really wants that compromise?
Not me, for sure  Grin

Happy halving day !

I thought I could stay awake for it but there was no way, I'm getting old. I see it happened at about 4am local time.

These last days many articles were written, Bitcoin got talked about on radio etc. (well, the business radio I'm listening to already has a crypto program so not a big difference), and I heard several times about miners being concerned, some quitting etc.

I don't understand how the situation is now worse for them than a few months ago when they earned twice the BTC, but its fiat price was half what it is now. Can someone explain ?

Hellow, fellow  Cheesy
I didn't stay awake, either...

The miners who did not take periodic halving effects into account in their business calculations (some won't even have had a clear vision of how long they plan to profitably run this), they may well be concerned in the face of rising hashing difficulty. Then there was the rise of energy prices, inflation and so on, which set back some newer mining companies in their profits to extend their business. It's always those unforseen events (black swans) that cause a lot of unfavorable side-effects. If you don't think about such, you remain with "the pants pulled down" in such situations (while all the others are able to run away)  Cheesy

Aaand, you know the media. They put up their (horror) stories, and then they are looking for ways to sell them to the public. What's really going on behind the media narratives might be very different.

The fees are very high, I read that it is because of the launch of something called RUNE, (I don't know what it is about)... but I will probably have to accumulate some BTC from DCA on an exchange before withdrawing... unfortunately. I hope things get back to normal soon.

Does anyone have any alternative to this, of keeping some BTC in an exchange for a while? before withdrawing to the wallet? I don't think there's much to do except wait

I LMGTFY'ed for y'all:

https://cointelegraph.com/news/runes-protocol-ignite-new-season-bitcoin-after-halving

Quote from: from the article linked above
The Runes token protocol is set to activate when the halving occurs. A battle for block space will begin where players will compete with each other to see who can issue the first tokens and the best token names, followed by a battle to see who can be the first to buy these tokens.

OMFG, hordes of apes competing over block space.
Ordinals must be stopped ASAP  Shocked

Quote
Additionally, in anticipation of Bitcoin network congestion, some projects are creating solutions to scale trading on the Runes protocol. In the past, a bridge that enabled the exchange of Bitcoin assets on Solana was successful. Now, platforms more aligned with Bitcoin are emerging — such as RuneChain, a Bitcoin layer-2 focused on Runes.

Chain my ass!

What's the opinion on Bitcoin transaction fees here? I'd say Bitcoin is broken if any UTXO under 0.001 BTC isn't even enough to pay for it's own transaction fee.

My opinion is that Ordinals were just a useless addition to Bitcoin. Maybe the chain should be split in a Core and an Ordinals variant, maybe with higher blocksize limit on the latter, to satisfy those blockwar-morons? IDK, but i wish inclusion of Ordinals would be rolled back ASAP. Who needs another sea of NFT's anyway?
I wish developers and individuals voting for BIPs would take a more cautious approach to add bitcoin functionality. It's not that hard. Just try to keep an eye on possible unwanted effects and outcomes of software "solutions" to problems or added functionality and address them before actually changing any code.
This type of thinking was the reason why i was hated by most collegues and even some of my bosses ("destroying" their "great" visions through factual criticism), and successful at the same time (through my own contributions and working alternatives to their "great" solutions) when i was working in the IT industry, back then.
Maybe Ordinals were orginally intended to break Bitcoin, who knows? I don't have enough background information on this branch/feature, so this is pure hollywood scriptbook thinking of mine. But, with an eye on NFTs and the presence of Bitcoin's slow transaction rate and limited block size, it would result in a nice attack vector to include the possibility to spam blocks, tainted as functionality.

Anyway, i was unhappy with the Ordinals idea as soon as i read about it the first time. This block spam confirmed my worries.

EDIT: And the whole drama with fees does have a touch of Ethereum to it, in regard to your original question, dunnit?

I actually have never second thought about goxx for whatsoever re distributing to hodlers.... whats wrong with that?

That's right.  I guess we are all counting on the intelligence and striving for freedom of people who inevitably will come to King Daddy. There is just is no safer and more fair place for your money.

With regard to all gox creditors being hodlers, I have my doubts

(Today) passive fuck-richies damned to watch several cycles finally emerged to hodlers who grew diamond hands in the process?
Or did you mean the opposite?

Even if all of them would dump. In the shadow of an upcoming supply shock, they're either damn stupid or just wanting to do everybody else a favor.

I moved the plants from the second week's cups into the first week's cups, updated the ground cover to show a few more days growth, altered the shadows inside the cups to make it a little more realistic and then I removed exactly 1/2 of the area of each plant to represent the halvening and finally included the countdown timer just in case it wasn't obvious.  Didn't intend for it to be ominous.... I meant it to be humourous actually.  I guess I have to work on my funny.

The humor is great, i was just trying to be funny as well  Cheesy
Generally, it's best to try to be humorous as often as possible.
It's one life for each of us, you don't want to be one of them wasting it being grumpy and serious all time.

I came across this chart showing the amount of USDT alongside BTC’s price. I’m sure it can’t be this correlated going back much further historically, but it seems to point to a higher BTC price in the immediate future. I know Tether’s USDT printing is a hot button issue to some. My opinion is that it just shows more usd being deposited on exchanges.

Have you got some charts of it over the previous bull/bear cycle? Would be interesting to see how it went there.

Users postet some more charts from earlier in the comments.

Maybe, Baby  Grin
Could also be that gains are parked in USDT to prevent (midterm?) taxation or future investment in different assets.
We will probably never know...

OT: need something to "repel" squirrels...they are eating fruits from one tree and nibble on another, while marauding in our back yard.
Our gardener told us to buy a couple of large water flasks (3 liters or a gallon, maybe), then fill them with water and distribute in the garden.
Apparently, little beasties see their own reflection and supposedly ran away 'fearing' the competitor.
Not sure it it works...too weird...looking for other suggestions.

Mirrors might serve you better, me thinks. You might try curved (convex) and straight ones, probably hanging on cord, so they can freely rotate and reflect squirrels from more than a single direction. The flasks might work better, maybe even more if the water is colored (black?) which should create a more intense reflection.

Back on these here parts after three days of vacation.
Noticed the iran/israel attack hours after it was carried out, had no opportunity to buy the dip while on the trip.
I already had a little fiat on one exchange and finally hit the buy button the other minute right after coming home.

Gotta backread some pages, but now it's time to go to sleep after an exhausting 7 hour drive.

I know this post is late but just returned from my excursion
to totality land. The internet was very spotty up there, so didn’t bother
posting till now back home.
This was using a Canon on a tripod.
The real experience is the moment of totality when one takes off the
eclipse shades and sees it in all it’s glory. 4 minutes of mind numbing awesomeness. Hard to put to words.
We cranked up the “2001 A Space Oddessy” opening theme at
the moment of totality. (“turn it up louder bro!!”)  I even got weirdly emotional.
F**king absolutely amazing life experience.

GO BITCOIN

Great stuff right there!
Once-in-a-lifetime-experience (just like Bitcoin)
Next time (LOL) you got to turn down the exposure for an even more awesome ecliptic shot.
But the photo is as good as a trigger for remembering the experience, anytime.

I'm OOM (Out Of Merit), so have +1 WOsMerit from me, at least!

Oh! If you guys are looking for a new PC/PS5 game to play, I'm totally addicted to Helldivers 2. What an incredible team-based game wow!

One of the best team-play shooters I've played since Counterstrike.

The violence and destruction is gratuitous!

Looks good. Like Quake in PUBG's footsteps. It's a pity that i have to play Fortnite with the kids because the violence of adult shooters is too much for the youngest party member.
However, it's still feeling good fragging at advanced age, even if my cognitive flexibility and coordination suffered a lot over the years. Still getting regular solo Epic Victories on "Zero Build Battle Royale". I love hideously gearing up over the game with zero enemy contact, before taking out some of the last dozen of enemies.
Feels good to know that there are some other "old guys" still rocking those ego-shooters.

It got pretty dark here during totality but it was very cloudy before and during so we couldn't see the sun at all.  The clouds dissipated slightly and I was able to get a photo just recently but well past peak coverage.

The sudden darkness is a little eerie.

I remember the last total eclipse i've seen 30 years ago. It was in early summer and the most spooky thing was the silence, when the birds stopped singing and the bees stopped flying.

3 Body Problem is a must watch.

I agree; it starts slow, but improves as it goes.
For those who did not read the book, some plot directions might be a little "weird".

I don't know the book, but books are usually (almost) error-free, while there are so many errors in filmed versions. I don't mean not following the story tightly, but for example an actor carrying a watch in an ancient movie (just for example). Those do stick out a lot for me, most of the times i just notice them, but sometimes i find them really annoying. Overall, the error-rate was ok-ish when following "3 Body Problem".
However, the series was really good, i enjoyed watching it a lot, just finished it two days ago. Had to watch the scence where the ship was fucked over three times in a row  Cool
