2041  Other / Off-topic / How to use Search function / find your mentions on topics on: June 23, 2018, 08:59:13 AM
This is how I do it...

1. Go to search function
2. type your username in between a double quotation mark. e.g: "mdayonliner"
3. Enter a rough message age: For example 2 by replacing 9999, you can keep 9999 but in this case the search will bring everything and it will take long time.
4. Finally click the Search button.

PS: Sometimes this search function acts weird but most of the times it's really helpful. When it acts weird then try changing the number for step 3.
2042  Other / Meta / Re: Alert a-la Inbox to tagged Replies on: June 23, 2018, 08:53:33 AM
Hello to everyone,

Still relatively new here and just beginning to browse to all the boards available to me. I would just like to ask if this forum already has an alert notification via inbox to members whose posts were tagged by other thread contributors. I feel this is needed so that the tagged member can easily be alerted and reply if necessary. I feel sorry when I don't get to reply immediately to posts where I was tagged.

No, however...  here is an alternative process.

2044  Other / Off-topic / Re: How to lock a topic on: June 23, 2018, 08:35:32 AM
Here are the details in my message to mods [this was locked sometime during period I was not logging-in/posting between March'18 and May'18];
Quote
Hi there,

Sorry to be an inconvenience but after a couple of months i finally log on to see some posts id like to reply to on my thread but it took me awhile to finally find out its locked. Odd, never had that happen before.

May I kindly please receive your help on two things;
(1) unlock this thread "Easy way to explain and teach Bitcoin"
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2357962.0
(2) was this an accident or mistake or could you come up with an understanding why this may have happened in first place?

At first I thought it was age of post or too many replies, but then, looking around same time period on high-reply topics proved this thought false, ie:
-https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=702838.0
-https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1917167.0

Anyways, again sorry to inconvenience either of you. Any help here would be greatly appreciated as this is one of my favorite topics and I really do believe in helping others educating on bitcoin and just spreading awareness on the world's most secure, decentralized, global, fair, value-storing crypto.

thank you,

What I understand here is...
A mod locked this topic, I do not know the reason of-course. Only the mod can explain.

AFAIK, if a mod lock a topic then only they can unlock it, you can not do anything there however, If you as a topic creator lock a topic then you can unlock it by yourself.
2045  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Change username/name on the bitcointalk forum on: June 23, 2018, 08:29:06 AM
That's not quite true, theymos also does manual name changes, though you are very unlikely to get one.
It's mainly if a company rebrands (for their forum rep account), or for high ranking/long standing users of the community.
So someday I have a chance to find an alternative username. My problem is, I can not find any other name except my current one. I kinda fall for it. I have been using this username from long time in everywhere.

Hold on... I have a new one in my mind now, I am gonna keep it secret  Grin

PS: Thanks Lutpin, good to know this information. I always thought same like TryNinja.

I'm trying everything I got, to remove that broken screw.  Grin
Good luck  Grin

Seems like you (OP) have some useful resources to try on. Well-done PsylockReborn.
2047  Other / Meta / Re: Remove self moderate option from service announcement ( Altcoins) to reduce scam on: June 22, 2018, 06:08:32 PM
If my memory is serving me right then I guess we already have talked about this before. Anyway self moderate has both advantages and disadvantages. I have a self moderated topic which I find useful not to keep unnecessary comments for my topic. It helps me to keep my topic clean and focused on my main goal.
2048  Other / Ivory Tower / Re: YouTube premium on: June 22, 2018, 06:02:43 PM
I'm not sure that they do know what they are doing. I think YouTube is on the skids as a result of demonetising political sites. FANG stocks are dropping as well, so it may be that the stock market is in agreement.
May be you have a point. I do not have much ideas about stoke stock market and stuffs.

btw - I posted the link rather than the image to save clogging the thread with large images. I consider the members who may be viewing the forum on mobile phones. Smiley
Is it too bad on mobile device? I do not use a phone that much since I broke (literally threw it on the floor) my iPhone few months ago LOL
2049  Other / Meta / Re: The 1st hero account ranked up from senior?! Cleary an abuse, alts or bought? on: June 22, 2018, 05:58:12 PM
Looks like we've got a few cases of a kind, gaining the infamous status of "de-ranked"

2050  Other / Meta / Re: Off topic needs cleaning up on: June 22, 2018, 05:49:03 PM
Well, my first posts on Bitcointalk was made in off-topic board. Back then I was afraid to post in main boards because I thought that if I will say something about Bitcoin incorrectly I will be "eaten" by high ranked members Cheesy
LAMO seems like every newbie has these fears of getting beaten/eaten by high ranked members. Well-done bud, now others think twice by seeing your rank  Grin

Anyway, it's psychological however here is what I think, if I am right then nobody can harm me.
2051  Other / Ivory Tower / Re: YouTube platinum on: June 22, 2018, 05:36:58 PM
It wasn't an email, it was a pop-up.  I got the name wrong as well - it is YouTube premium.
https://www.youtube.com/premium

I'll change the thread title, I'm sorry about that.

That's ok, sorry I missed the pop-up part too.

Hmm - seems like they are experimenting this new idea. If someone buy the premium membership then they (YouTube) basically is sacrificing the earning from advertising with the subscription fee. $11.99/month (considering individual fee category) is relatively a good amount. Yearly $143.88, not bad. Although I am not sure if it's including or excluding VAT. Whatever it is, that's a very good amount which will be a confirmed constant income for YT.

In these case I see the adSense advertisers (especially channel owners) will be discouraged. They still is creating contents but is not getting a share (assuming YouTube is going to keep the 100% membership income).

I see it this way...
It's a win-win for YT. Those who buys subscription, they are paying not to see the ads stuffs and those who do not pay for subscription they are paying buy seeing ads meaning the money is coming from the advertisers. Both way YT is making money. It's just creating two classes of users. Paid and Free. But both are helping YT to make their money directly and indirectly.

I am not sure how this experiment will work out but I am sure these people know what they are doing. In fact they are the biggest brain now.
2052  Other / Ivory Tower / Re: YouTube platinum on: June 22, 2018, 05:13:43 PM
I've just had a message pop up inviting me to join YouTube platinum. It seems that if I pay a monthly fee, then I can suppress all advertising. Does this indicate the end of content monetising on YouTube? I lnow they have been de-monetising a lot of sites, but turning it into a subscription service is surely the beginning of the end for YouTube.
I highly doubt that you got it from YouTube. I would suggest double checking the email address and content writing style. YouTube did not send it, If I am wrong then this will be highly unexpected move. I do not see any email from YouTube for non of my YouTube channels. I have more than one YouTube channel. Do you have the email subject? If then would you mind to pass it to me. I will search for the email in my gmail accounts, in case I am missing it.

I do not think YouTube, Facebook etc will ever think about subscription based business. Data is the main game for these days technology. Information is the biggest business. Only to take your information, big companies like Facebook, Google (YouTube same thing), yahoo everyone - is giving you the free service. They are monetizing your behavior even from the keys you are pressing now on your keyboard. They are spending millions billions to maintain the server and human resources. All they need is your information and all the expenses they are paying from the advertising income which are coming from selling your information to the advertisers. It's a better business than subscription, in fact the best business model.

People do not give much value to pass up information when they get offer to use a free service from trusted parties and these big guns are utilizing this psychology of human being.

It's called learning from the superior.

I think it's more like "monkey see, monkey do".

Another case for removing merit associated with deleted posts.

I can see at least one staff member opposing this..

It's called learning from the superior. The full history will be accessed here: http://loycevsbasement.privatedns.org/Merit/history/382413.html
Thanks to LoyceV

By the way I have a deducted post about the staff:
[staff] xandry: may I ask an explanation? <=== https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4330297.0

update:
I can see at least one staff member opposing this..
Doesn't that seem a little questionable where a moderator is giving merit to so many posts that are being deleted?

Forget the part where they're staff: where's the sensibility in determining quality posts when you rapid-fire merit to users who consistently have deleted posts? (i.e. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=merit;u=1762404)
Thank you actmyname. It does look questionable (not little but very much)
2055  Other / Meta / Re: The 1st hero account ranked up from senior?! Cleary an abuse, alts or bought? on: June 22, 2018, 12:54:42 PM
I see now that even the main culprit Ajpa94 has turned into a newbie...
Are they trying to hide the post, keep the merit and then start re-ranking ....sorry I just don't get it.

Close your eyes and try to eliminate others factors...
An unbreakable record in BitcoinTalk history. Extra ordinary result! 500 merit from 6 activities and a newbie account  Grin

We have better version of nullius  Tongue

2056  Other / Meta / Re: When will the account recovery problem be solved? on: June 22, 2018, 12:27:45 PM
Yes, this is why I made the thread, it could happen to any of us, and it would leave us out of the forum for months, maybe years, making an huge gap of inactivity which you would need to explain every time you want to do business with someone, and there's a risk they will just not believe it.

From this fear, I proposed some solutions long ago and I have seen a lot of others did have different ideas but seems like we need to wait more to see any changes. I assume theymos has other priorities than looking at this issue.

[Proposal: prevent account hack] A complete new login system for BitcoinTalk <== https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3371718.0

I just hope for the best.

update:
IMO hiring a staff won't solve the problem since i'm sure there are too many cases to be handled by 1 person.

There should be automatic account restore with bitcoin address which already mentioned on these threads System to prove account ownership and recovery automatically - Demo included & [Proposal: prevent account hack] A complete new login system for BitcoinTalk
One staff only need to prove recovery request or/and investigate whether the private key was stolen if needed when the account was hacked.
Oh thanks ETFbitcoin for bringing the topic before me.
2057  Other / Meta / Re: When will the account recovery problem be solved? on: June 22, 2018, 11:51:02 AM
We are not talking obvious spammers, but legit posters getting their account hacked, signing various BTC addresses and never getting a reply back. I think this is unfair and a bigger problem than some 3rd worlders spamming on 100+ page threads. Some legit users just can't get their accounts back, they lose their PM history and other valuable stuff.

I wonder when will the account recovery methods be improved. Probably hiring new staff to do the task should do.
Does it scare you when you think if your account gets hacked or anything happen and then you wait weeks after weeks or months after months without any result to get your account back?

It does scare me a lot, because I am addicted to this forum.  Embarrassed
2058  Other / Meta / Re: Forum feature request: set Alt-text by default for all embedded images on: June 22, 2018, 11:36:04 AM
Alt text has a real semantic meaning, so I didn't want to do that, but I added a throbber background image to images without any alt text. I just added it now, so it may take a few hours before you'll be able to see it due to caching.
I am noticing a change from last few hours before the image loads and it looks good. Great job.

Update:
Ok, seems like it's not working
It's working perfectly fine now. Confirmed feedback from my side.
