2081  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: My friend's band... on: June 04, 2012, 09:17:49 PM

As long as it's nothing gay like any of that 'Computer-Crap' or this-'step' that-'step' kinda trash that can only be truly enjoyed by someone high on Ecstasy, wearing a glow-stick lanyard-made necklace, sucking on a soother.

I always thought of gay music as something like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen_%28band%29 or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bronski_Beat.

Seriously though.... if the music is good it will sell itself.  I know of two bands that have mostly ditched the modern label representation (though they do have labels with non-traditional label contracts) and make basically their living off of CD sales and gigs.  These bands have two things in common.  They interact with their fans online readily and they do not take a hard line on music 'piracy'.  Oh, and their music is good!

Similar deals go for 20-30% off not 10%.

Ah...After browsing around, I see that now.  Thank you for pointing it out.  I'll need to reconsider whether I want to bring my deal in line with that or just use the gift cards myself.

The Home Depot cards are a good deal on Amex Rewards.  That is the main thing I cash mine in for,
2084  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What would mining look like... on: June 02, 2012, 12:05:58 AM
...if it were a multi-billion dollar industry?

Say, for example, overall annual mining revenues were in the $10's of billions.  Who would be mining, and with what?  What would the margins look like?  Would there be a concerted effort between major mining corporations (assuming mining corporations existed) to help ensure profitability of said corporations?  In other words, some sort of agreement that if price/difficulty reached a certain ratio, each of those corporations would reduce their capacities by a certain percentage?  In the traditional sense, it might be akin to price fixing.  Speaking of which, would said mining corporations take it a step further, and price fix by refusing to sell below a certain price/difficult ratio as well?  Would the small-time miner still find room to achieve profitability, or would margins be so slim as to only allow those with steep discounts on electricity to be able to mine profitably?  Would electric companies purposefully charge corporate miners more per kwh, and/or would government mandate an additional tax on electricity used for mining?

Discuss.

One of the greatest things about bitcoin mining is its barrier to entry.  The thing that could change that of course is difficulty going to 100x what it is now.  ASICS could do that though I do not think too quickly.  At that point, there would be little point in mining with anything but ASIC.  If ASICs where controlled only one or two parties then the small guy would be shut out.  I just don't think this is going to happen.  If bitcoin was a billion dollar business, making ASICs would be profitable even with a small slice of the market.  Lots of competition would show up.

The same is true with miners refusing to sell coins.  They are not only competing with other miners, they are competing with coin holders as well.  The price will find a new equilibrium that would be higher, but miners would be loosing money by not selling.  If the price goes too high, new people will mine and sell.

I suspect BFL is paying rent, lights and salaries with mini-rig orders they still haven't shipped. BFL prove me wrong:  publish a report from a lawyer or CPA showing that they are holding payments for these systems for you in escrow.

By my calculations BFL is making about $300 a single.  Lets say about 100 a month (I am guessing most orders are NOT on the thread in this forum) so they could be making in excess of $30,000 a month on the hardware.  I think they can pay the bills with that.

You'd be surprised what senior electronics engineers and senior software engineers make nowadays, and that doesn't even include QA, custumer support, marketing, sales...

Taking your numbers, they're losing money, not making money.

Startups usually don't pay full scale wages. Outsourcing also helps.
2087  Other / Off-topic / Re: BFL UNIT 832 DEVICES on: June 01, 2012, 03:46:50 AM
Well everyone on the list should be given a free BFL unit not just me.
-Well properly 3+ BFL unit orders should be given this deal.
And lesser then 3 BFL units should be deposited $100-$300 cash back.

Thats only 60 free BFL units, properly only costs $300 to make, an guess.
$300*60=$18,000.

But they have made much more then that. I am sure they can compensate.
Besides if they do compensate, a lot more customers will join them, yielding
more then $18,000 for them being nice to do so.

In the 18 days they were late for you, mining on three units would have made about $150.  While I do not believe they owe you on that, that would be the max, your lost opportunity.

I am waiting on a small solar panel and a battery kit.  I want to attempt to build an outdoor capable unit, even if it only stays on during the day.  Could have some interesting uses.
2091  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: BitcoinAdvertisers.com is a SCAM? on: May 30, 2012, 10:15:22 PM
It's pretty silly to say you disbursed funds to "charity" rather than just credit back the advertisers. I can't imagine many people expecting that sort of thing.

The money needs to go back to the advertisers.  Either the clicks were valid and should be paid, or they were a scam and should be refunded.  bitcoinadvertisers.com nor a charity should end up with the money.

2095  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin in space. on: May 29, 2012, 12:34:44 AM
While looking at sites featuring Peltier chips, I found this:

lol.

The ultimate questions are: Will we be heating or cooling the FPGAs? Will we be heating or cooling the satellite?

If you were mining in space, you would be cooling.  You could develop strategies for heat, maybe as I said above the mining heat could keep the rest of the satellite warm, depending on scale.  Maybe if the mining load was small enough there would be no heating or cooling and it would be balanced.
2096  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin in space. on: May 29, 2012, 12:16:50 AM
Wonder if you could get electricity by using Peltier chips backwards - the heat from the miner would run the hot side, and space would run the cold side, and electricity comes out the middle. But that sounds too much like a perpetual motion machine that won't work for some reason.

Or maybe the sun will heat the hot side of the Peltier chips, and the GPUs/FPGAs/ASICs will just dump the heat into space. What is a Peltier chip's efficiency compared to solar?

The peltier chips are much worse then solar except where there is no sun.  Peltier like devices have been used in space to make 'nuclear batteries' like on the voyager probes.

2097  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin in space. on: May 29, 2012, 12:14:06 AM
The cooling would require heat radiators and maybe even liquid cooling even with FPGA, but it is of course possible.

Its -270.3celsius in space, you would need to warm up the FPGA rather than cool it.

Space is a vacuum.  You do not get free cooling by touching nothingness.   The vacuum acts as an insulator and therefore some way of radiating heat via radiation has to be used.  Maybe the WHOLE satellite could use the heat to stay at temperature so heat pipes of some kind would be used.
2098  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin in space. on: May 28, 2012, 11:10:47 PM
At first I thought, "mining in space", but you cant cool the rigs up there...

Doesn't matter that there's no air, plenty cold ambiently.

Actually, it would be an excellent environment for mining. No cooling required and extremely efficient solar power. If you could manage to get reasonably priced internet bandwidth and a large enough volume, it could be cost-efficient...

The cooling would require heat radiators and maybe even liquid cooling even with FPGA, but it is of course possible.

The problem with 'birthers' is they constantly ignore facts and come up with little snippets of things that are NOT FACTS and call them facts.  As they say, you are entitled to your own opinions, not your own facts.

In the above links, hearsay is presented as fact.

Besides the REAL birth cert, the living witneses, there were printed birth announcements in TWO local papers.  From wiki:

"In 1961, birth notices for Barack Obama were published in both the Honolulu Advertiser and the Honolulu Star-Bulletin on August 13 and August 14, 1961, respectively, listing the home address of Obama's parents as 6085 Kalanianaole Highway in Honolulu.[7][13] On November 9, 2008, in response to the persistent rumors, the Advertiser posted on its web site a screenshot of the announcement taken from its microfilmed archives. Such notices were sent to newspapers routinely by the Hawaii Department of Health.[13]

In an editorial published on July 29, 2009, the Star-Bulletin pointed out that both newspapers' vital-statistics columns are available on microfilm in the main state library. "Were the state Department of Health and Obama's parents really in cahoots to give false information to the newspapers, perhaps intending to clear the way for the baby to someday be elected president of the United States?" the newspaper asked.[78]"
