Laptop (assuming used): ~ Bad: For the most part NOT designed for 24/7/365 operations It may not be designed for it, but after years af running laptops for 24/7/365, I can tell you it works just fine in most cases Just keep the fan clean, and stay away from the ones with power hungry CPUs.

2. Ordinals users have paid over 1385BTC in transaction fees for inscribing this stuff. That means miners have earned literally 1385BTC from this time period or over 50 million dollars altogether. I can only assume gullible people paid a lot more in their attempt to get rich quick. And some indeed got rich, while the majority lost their money. The NFT market is very quiet nowadays, and this seems to be the next thing. Until Ordinals blow up fail too, after which someone will create another money maker for themselves.

and you spend under 100 usd. Including a free i7 laptop isn't really a fair comparison Availability of cheap older hardware will depend on where you live. I can't just order hardware in New York without high shipping cost and import taxes. so add 100 bucks and you destroy any rasp pi For continuous operation, I'd look at energy costs too. A Raspi is designed to use very little power. Since you're into mining, I assume you have very cheap electricity. Here, the Optiplex will cost more to run a few years than it's initial price. That being said: I like cheap laptops too. They're much more versatile. btw. Speaking of this, based on personal experience, what is the recommended minimum hardware CPU/RAM? Does it make sense to start a node on a laptop with 1 core? I just checked: bitcoind currently uses 6-9% of one Xeon core, and 3% of the system's 32GB RAM. Except for the IBD, it really doesn't take much resources. It's been a long time since laptops with only 1 core were sold, so it depends on which CPU you have. And if it's 15 years old, chances are it lacks RAM too.

Very easy to do with GPG, you don't need any system software to do this except for a PGP client.
First, zip the folder into a .tar.gz or a .zip or something, Then encrypt and delete the folder. Am I the only one who doesn't find any of this easy to do on a phone? My approach is much simpler: my phone itself is worth more than any crypto in my mobile wallet. I'm careful with it anyway.

Do you think wine represents a potential risk for his funds? Safe assumption: of course! Any software adds a risk. Depending on the risk level, I'd run it in a VM, on a different system, or as a different user. After all, you're using a multi-user system, and there's no need to risk it. Use permissions to keep things apart. Example: To run wine as a different user, create a new user "wine". Give user "wine" access to your display: xhost +SI:localuser:wine; su - wine Then, as user "wine": Note that I haven't used this for wine, but I did for other programs. If I have to use wine, I run it inside a VM with VPN, because I don't trust the programs I use with it. Or on a spare laptop which is setup to wipe and overwrite in minutes.

I would perhaps submit a few posts since I'm almost always out of sMerits - well, I'm not a merit source either. But first I wanted to ask for "green light" from you - I don't want to seem rude, since the idea was originally intended for "newer" accounts with less merit. Go!Are you only interested in posts (or are only posts eligble) that are unmerited or can you also submit posts that have received merit but are/were still very helpful? Go!Even better if you add good posts from others too I'm going to use vapourminer's Merit history to clone-dump sMerit. He seems to read a lot of posts, including old posts.

That's like: "you've replaced my bicycle lock, now you can take my car". Android always feels like a dumbed-down version of Linux. On a slow old tablet, after switching users, the lock screen takes many seconds to load. During that time you can view the entire screen, and even starts apps (including Authenticator). So setting the phone to perform auto reboot every few hours would help a lot in this case. That removes basic functionality from your phone: you'll need to unlock it every few hours to be able to receive phone calls again.

The reason I haven't Merited your posts is because I have doubts if you wrote it yourself. It doesn't match your other posts, in which you make many mistakes from writing words wrong to incorrect capitalisation.
I've been slacking (and ill), and my source sMerits keep building up. I'm planning to do this: If you have 150 source merit and you only see 3 merit-worthy posts in a month, then I'd rather you over-give each of them 50 merit than let the merit expire. That way there are more people capable of sending merit, and the "merit economy" is less top-down. I don't think I'll drop 50 sMerits on a random Newbie, higher ranks are welcome too.

Dear LV, I feel worried about you. Your situation lasts since September, if I remember well and we are already in November... I wish you to get better soon buddy! Thanks! It's been 6.5 weeks indeed. At least the headaches are less, which means I can think again, so that's something I've never been ill for more than 2 weeks, and that was a severe flu years ago. Even Covid took only a week. I've broken bones that healed faster than this. I've replaced alcohol by orange juice for crying out loud

Or probably a bug due to the month reshuffle? It's a feature, not a bug Yeah, last month I was on DT1 and this month am on DT2, but the thing is I have so many other members on my trustlist and not just those two, so I would expect it to show others too... right? Enter your username in the Report Options (tiny orange icon on the top right), and you'll see all of them. When 30 DT1-members are replaced at once, BPIP's DT Change Log dumps a lot of data all at once. Your own name will be spread over multiple pages.

If the moderation understands that they are useful the OPs could be restored Some forums would indeed do that, but I don't think that's going to happen here: he can't delete the topics, so he's editing them to be "blank". This is common and allowed. Someone could quote an old archived version, and post it into a new post

FWIW, Android have built-in encryption But it sucks My phone for instance gives me the option to encrypt my MicroSD card. But if I do, I can no longer read the card in another phone, and if I reset my phone to factory settings, I also lose the data on my MicroSD card. On a (Linux) laptop, at least I'm allowed to keep my decryption key. I don't want to tie decryption to one specific device.

What's the best way to sell my small amount of BTX nowadays? CMC shows Pancake swap, but I don't really want to figure all that out for $8 worth of coins. I'd like to get rid of this wallet (and it's dedicated VM), so I should get rid of the coins first.
If anyone's interested to buy 200 BTX, feel free to PM me. Done.

As far as I know, any passphrase on Ledger creates another wallet. On Unstoppable wallet, only valid PINs work. Which one do you think has fewer weak spots? Ledger with their Passphrase or Unstoppable with their Duress? The passphrase gives unlimited possibilities, the PIN only 1 million. And if you have 10 wallets, 1 in 100,000 PINs will be valid. I don't think it matters much in practice, just have your 24" wrench ready.

for example, when creating this post, the block time/number would be 815832 But why? Just a gimmick? It's probably possible to create a user script for this, but even then: block propagation isn't instantaneous, so in edge cases theymos' node might see it before your own node sees it. There will probably a lot of posts near milestone blocks. I'm preparing for block 1000000 already I have seen an old thread where theymos were looking for devs to build a new forum software. The thread is from long ago, and the budget was over 5000 BTC. Does anybody know what happened then? See New forum software.

Laptop may attract attention, someone accidentally may hit you with shoulder and you may drop your laptop, everything can happen, I wouldn't use laptop either. I think that chances of damagin laptop or getting it stolen is way higher compared to smartphone because everyone has smartphone today in the street and outside, just my two cents. A quick Google search shows that both laptops and cell phones have a 1-in-10 chance of being stolen. I trust laptops a lot more though, since I can install my own software and easily encrypt a user directory. Pick one up from Craigslist (for $50) and you don't have to worry about losing your expensive laptop.

I want to post this, but if I do, it's gone already..... I'll post it anyway: The number is inaccurate anyway, if I check my post history, it shows 25017 posts.

displaying the exact BTC block time What do you mean with "Bitcoin block time"? The block time is approximately 10 minutes (usually a tad less, because of the ever increasing hash rate). It varies per block, but also per day as you can see in the linked graph. Or do you mean the latest block number? That would make more sense, although I don't see how it's relevant to anything posted on the forum.

Durress mode is similar to the Passphrase option Ledger has. Right? As far as I know, any passphrase on Ledger creates another wallet. On Unstoppable wallet, only valid PINs work. Scary scenario. It is. New plan: I'm getting one of these! Cut a hole at the end, and use epoxy glue to embed my hardware wallet into the wrench. My $63 wrench beats any $5 wrench!
