I will give every time the same advice: - Look at the technology. No, not the number of "planned features", but look at the problem the cryptocurrency is trying to solve. If it's a relevant problem (like scalability or energy consumption), then you can take that coin into account. - Look at the developers. How is development organized? It's better to have a open model than a "monarch-like" lead developer or an completely anonymous "team". - Look at the community. Are they only in for the easy money? If most posts in the ANN thread are about price, don't invest. - Ignore advice from all members with an altcoin (ICO etc.) in their signature (or personal message ) Then it would be good to check into NEM too if you go buy these rules. Says the guy with an altcoin in his signature

oh, derp, thanks for not being a dick about it or anything Just curious, why would you guys pick a normal looking public address for the burn address? How is it proven that the coins were burned? Why not use something like '1CounterpartyXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXUWLpVr' where it's clear that no one is holding that private key? Please give me more lmgtfy links. Edit: I googled it. Still think it would be cooler if it was 'UburnALLUnitusForBarrXXXXXXXXXXXvdP' or something.

Well done nzsquirrell, well done! Thank you a lot Rich list is pretty interesting, basically it shows you can get into top ten and hold significant share of the coins for fraction of BTC! I consider this unbelievable opportunity... Agree, thanks nzsquirrell. Who do you think this is: Rank Address Balance Transactions Proportion of Supply 1 UMz1xPGbHGWacUUtfXefyXWVoJX9Q2kNtF 17025663.06832745 UIS 25 40.113% nzsquirrell or cryptopia?

Hey, no more self-moderated thread, now you can't delete my post: I guess you'll probably lock this thread in the not too distant future and move on to the fourth or fifth thread for this, right? Gotta keep the information spread out and difficult to cobble together how you launched this "currency" I guess. Maybe you should try changing the name too, I hear that's a common tactic of worthless penny stocks and crypto snake oil to lure in more sucker...err...investors.

Could you also make an overview with unique posters and ranks? That is, how many unique legendary members have posted in the thread, how many unique hero members have posted in the thread etc.
For the XMR ANN thread: User class number of unique posters Full Member 382 Hero Member 338 Jr. Member 217 Legendary 105 Member 322 Newbie 361 Sr. Member 353 Staff 2 aka instacash 1 Something borked on instacalm aka instacash, but would rather not run whole script again (this was just done from the output file). Staff posts are Lauda and EAL.

Thanks for sharing! I am actually quite positively surprised by these statistics. You would expect that there are way more newbie and junior members (trying to earn a quick buck) compared to hero and legendary. But this Monero tread is like an upside down piramide.
What could explain such a remarkable difference? Likely at first people join the forum for bitcoin, and then slowly realize that there is value in alternative technology as well? Or is it Monero specific because of it's complexity / really being different from bitcoin?
I am not browsing any other threads in this section of the forum, so excuse my ignorance if the answer is obvious.
I've run it on a few more threads, and even for younger coins you will see the majority of posts by at least senior and hero members. I haven't run it enough to really evaluate, but I get the sense the people posting on a thread for months/years will become senior/hero/legendary, and so that's where the majority of the posts will come from. Monero does seem to have bit higher percentage of legendary and hero than the other threads I ran, but again, small sample... https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=483515.msg14789923#msg14789923https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1365894.msg14788952#msg14788952https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1233817.msg14784801#msg14784801I guess it would be a fairer comparison to compare with other coins' threads that are ~2 years old with 1000+ pages.

What is PoA?
Proof-of-activity. I think it will be kind of like proof-of-stake, except maybe you have to lock coins for some amount of time, rather than just hold them in wallet.

Pretty cool, jwinterm. Thanks for commenting the code you posted.
No problem, guess it's just habit at this point. Just fyi it was run using Python3. Apparently there are some differences with the zip function between 2 and 3, and I don't think the ascii function works in 2.

One more question then too just to make sure I have this. Each address is essentially comprised of 3 things: the address, the public key, the private key....is that right?
This is correct, but the other two of those things are derived from the private key. Here is a nice tutorial on how the public key and address are generated from the private key: http://bitcoinx.io/bitcoin-help/bitcoin-address-generator-tutorial/
