Well, I think there is a pretty big difference with Bitcoin.

Bitcoin address consumers needs. Whereas Ethereum address a market of profit-driven DAC.

A DAC will seek to maximize its profit and therefore minimize its costs. So if an Ethereum-free exists, odds are that alternative will be deemed optimal by the market.

A feeless system would be vulnerable to the halting problem and thus cannot compete with a fee system. Also a fork of this nature would likely honor the original ownership structure and thus have no impact upon purchasers and early stakeholders of ethereum.

I would also like to point out that Ethereum does more than just enable DAOs. It also can be used for things like gambling, smart property, contracts and linking cryptocurrency infrastructure together.  Larger DAOs will likely have independent economic models and use ether to link to other entities in a trustless way.

Is there a 50% premine of ethereum or is that a rumor?

We are testing an endowment and new type of VC model with the Ethereum launch and thus some of the initial Ethereum supply with be premined to allow for compensation of early stakeholders, strategic partners and also the long term health of the Ethereum Project. There numbers will all be disclosed in the business plan and prospectus released prior to the fundraiser for community review alongside a full explanation why we think they are necessary and the vesting terms. Our hope is to leave a template for future projects in this space to use to do things in a fair, accountable and transparent way without having to soliciting funding from angels, VCs or other actors traditionally inaccessible to many billions of people.

We will also release our plans for the conversion of the Ethereum Project's fiduciary hub into a decentralized autonomous organization living completely on the Ethereum blockchain. This also is another template we are planning on well distributing. We want people to use the DAO model for their business and NPO pursuits and use our funding model to get them bootstrapped.

hat prevents to make a fork of Ethereum and reset all the fees to zero?

The same thing that prevents a bitcoin fork or any other fork of an open sourced project. The social consensus of the community as a whole. Should the community feel the team, parameters and infrastructure behind Ethereum is optimal, then they will stay on Chain A. If not then they will migrate. You, as a community, should have this freedom. It keeps everyone accountable.

Let me do the honours: Is Goldman Sachs involved in this venture?

Goldman Sachs has no involvement in our venture. We have no current GS employees nor intend on hiring any nor establishing a partnership. We will not accept investment from goldman sachs nor collaborate with them as a partner at any time.

Thank you, this is progress. Gavin should already have those out if not soon. I know he wrote the reference client on ubuntu 13.04. Visit code.ethereum.org for updates. We are doing a major redesign of it over the next few weeks and migrating to SCRUM. Moving out of February, you should see a lot of great code and tests happening including our economic modeling.

We also have a working go client. Go get -u http://github.com/go ethereum if I recall.

Vitalik, anthony and I brought the original team together and the whitepaper did the rest. I don't know what to think of these Nxt people to be honest. Apparently our tech sucks, Nxt is better. We have been Co - opted by evil bankers yet our entire team is transparent unlike certain other teams of 71 Smiley oh and vitalik is a time traveling android sent from a dystopian future (Btw there is seriously a graphic novel coming out about it called vitalik ad 2134).

Levity aside, use common sense and good judgment. When we release the prospectus and business plan read them and do your due diligence. Look at our partners and strategy and most importantly our technology. There are some enormous frustrations in the financial world with how things are structured. It's unfair and corrupt also totally inaccessible to billions of people. Don't you think at least 2 people from the industry would like to be on a project that makes the world a better, more fair place?

I understand how you guys feel. I really do see a lot of frustration and anger in these forums. I felt the same when I was in the Ron Paul movement back in 2008. It was terrible to feel helpless and ignored. The difference today is that we have technology that can accomplish anything you want. I just want the community to help us build it, protect it and evolve it to meet the challenges of then future.

The problems we face are now too complex for a single  hacker to resolve. They require a community, large investments in time and resources as well as a dream for a better world. Set the IPO aside and all the other petty grievances and help me make ethereum.

and I really wonder if the adoption necessary for investors to reap any return on investment

So we have the same problem as every single company offering a product in the entire software industry? Also if we had the marketcap of dodgecoin, then investors would most likely double their money. I'm not worried about the marketcap, I'm concerned about increasing the utility of the Ethereum network whenever possible. Ether is the fuel for it. The more utility of the network, the more ether gets consumed. People don't buy oil because its pretty. The more stuff running on ethereum; the higher demand for ether.

I want to know the answer to this as well. Yes LeoC is a huge scammer and all around asshole, I get that. What I don't get is why is it ok to completely ignore this valid question solely on that basis? Will just like to let you know, that as a new user, the response to his post didn't have a positive effect on me. I have 5 BTC that I want to invest into something, but everywhere I go there is always something that just doesn't feel right, Ethereum included. So it's no longer the scammer asking the question, it's me. Also I have absolutely no problem with the IPO+premine. The amount of work that the developers have put into this deserves to be rewarded. Also which other developers publicly speak about their cryptocurrency at conventions? Exactly. Look how small Vitalik is, if it ended up being a scam, which is very unlikely, one punch by a disgruntled convention goer would put him in a coma. Besides the nagging issue about security I'm almost convinced to buy into Ethereum.

As a cryptographer, security is pretty much the thing that consumes me on a daily basis. We are currently focused on streamlining the development process, onboarding devs and getting overall operations efficient. Once we are on some better PMS systems and have everyone SCRUMed, I'll be building a security team to start the long process of developing the sandbox with me.

We follow checklist driven development in a certain respect thus events must occur prior to the value chain being released. On the security side, a full pre and post code audit, pen test bounties and exploration of many different security models from running the sandbox on a VM like Docker to things like signed contracts. We are early in the process and thus have the freedom and resources to explore many options. The good news is that java, .net and V8 have provided many great lessons to us new projects not having the indignity of legacy code and we are working hard to include the community in the development process.

237  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Euler's totient function algorithm compatible with SHA-256? on: January 30, 2014, 07:44:30 AM

I'm working on a new project and could use some help from anyone that has worked on or understands the SHA-256 algorithm. Basically I need to know how compatible the two cryptography algorithms are if at all and whether or not a new alt coin could be designed around Euclid's Algorithm using the Euler's totient function. Im not sure this is the best place to raise the question but was hoping someone with a bit of knowledge in cryptography could help me out.

There is no connection between SHA and the ETF. ETF relies upon integer factorization, which is a slow process and thus used as the foundation of RSA. SHA is a cryptographically secure file integrity check. Essentially it's a very special function that maps arbitrary files to a rather large domain in a process constrained by something called the avalanche effect.

Just my two cents about ethereum, no one that matters in the bitcoin community cares about what Charles Hoskinson is doing. He is a real life troll, he is a con-artist, who thinks if he speaks enough times people will believe him or follow him. He started with education and tried to raise money for that and it failed. Then he would harass people on pm for donations.

Thanks for the FUD. https://www.udemy.com/bitcoin-or-how-i-learned-to-stop-worrying-and-love-crypto/#/ 25,000 people would disagree with you about the education project and we have a new content line coming out soon. BTW, that course is free and released under a creative commons license. I'm sorry that you feel education isn't a priority in this community.

And thanks for calling me a con artist. Thus far every venture I'm been involved in has been profitable for its investors and contributed to this community. What have you done?

EDIT: Can we get some swag too? Cheesy

I will personally pay for 300 tee shirts for the next conference if anything to see an army of 300 people wearing our shirts. The next line will have dropbox, a clearinghouse, an altcoin and perhaps a few other designs on the back. We'll also sign a few for you guys.

I hate to bring this up, but is it possible to get a statement about what happened with Invictus? I don't care about details if that's not necessary. My only concern is to find out whether there's a possibility of a disruption like that with Ethereum, which could affect the project if we're focusing on the longer-term.

There were strategic and creative differences in the company and eventually it lead to a parting. We have since resolved all issues and it's considered to be a closed issue. If it's any consolation, Invictus is doing quite well as a company and shipping products thus I suppose the business plan wasn't too bad.

Unlike Invictus, we had a chance to get to know each other here on the Ethereum team and I'm very good friends with Anthony and Vitalik. We've collaborated first on the Bitcoin Education Project and his work on the Bitcoin Alliance of Canada. Ultimately, you have to make sure you have good team dynamics and respect prior to launching a venture. We did that here with Ethereum and even lived together at a beach house in Miami for a week to see how much we could get on each other's nerves. This really is the best team I've ever worked on.

In terms of Invictus, I think everyone is now getting along in the space:
