Yes but true definition of COLD STORAGE is when the wallet NEVER come online (once came online it's not fully a cold storage).

Sum up:
Anybody who gets access to either:
1-your unencrypted wallet file (encryption must be strong otherwise it's not big deal to break it)
2-your wallet seed phrase
Can spend all your bitcoins ( no matter how safe you stored the other thing !!!)

So the weakest security point is at the moment of creation the wallet so if your PC was compromised that time (and the hacker had gain access to your private keys) he can just wait till you store some BTC there.

But honestly I think this entire offline/cold wallet thing is mostly for people who keep their entire wealth in BTCs and loosing them would ruin their life. IMO using simple home PC with proper antivirus, not visiting doubtful site ... just keeping general online safe habits is enough to be safe.

Just to add:
When sending BTC you can use the offline wallet to sign the transaction and then broadcast it (the signed transaction) using any other online device. (no need to connect the offline wallet to internet directly)
or
as you wrote above you can restore entire wallet using the seed phrase.

1. Exchanges usually chose which coin to enlist (enlisted are popular, high trade volume etc. coins). I guess there is not universal one which lists them all. My favorite is bittrex and poloniex (both supports many coins). Just make one account on each and you have access to plenty coins. Quite popular is also shapeshift.
To find exchange for given altcoin go and search for ANN thread here on bitcointalk (where should be list of supported exchanges) or visit the coin home page.

2. I'm not aware of any wallet supporting all coins. Guess it's not even possible as the coins are appearing/disappearing all the time.
I have only wallets for main coins I deal with (BTC, ETH, LTC) and in case I need accept/send payment in other cryptos I would use exchange. Nevertheless it's not recommended to have too much value in exchanges due to risk of hack etc. (I bet you already know that).
Safest way is to make a dedicated device, install all the wallets you want and store your coins there.

I have few remarks you should count with.

Idea 1 - Not sure if understand correctly. Taking your ZOO example ...  Do you want to make some sort of virtual tour through the ZOO?
If so and you want to make business of it I guess you would need ZOO approval/collaboration otherwise you can face lawsuit. I would first discuss this with the ZOO management.

Idea 2 - In my country finding a precious coins, historical items etc. and not informing relevant authorities (museum, conservationists ...) is a felony ( you can only claim small reward as a finder ). So you should first inform hows it going in your country.
Also I think there is already lot of people with detector around the world and mostly doing this as a hobby rather than business. In other words, profitability is not guaranteed.

Jedno hezký ponzi z posledních let je třeba recyclix kde vytahali z lidí prachy a ještě jim nakukali jak z jejich investic zachraňujou svět. No prostě ukázka ukázka promyšlenýho makretingu vs. tupý stádo.

Princip je fakt jednoduchej ... dobrej marketing = proud investorů a dokud investoři proudí všechno šlape podle plánu. Samozřejmě že počítají s investicí do začátku aby nalákali první lidi co to pak důvěřivě šíří dál ... a vo tom to je. Proto já spíš obviňuju ty lidi něž provozovatele ... když ta poptávka existuje tak co by to nezkousili.
Myslim že už sme toho probrali dost. S diskusí na toto téma končim.  Nechci dál spamovat jediný český vlákno na tomhle fóru o věcěch který si rozumnej člověk dokáže vyhledat.

@kilo17 You can't say the refund was not sent for sure. The address receiving LTCs could have possibly be his exchange deposit address. He could refund using other one. Nevertheless he did not provide ( as far as I can see) the refunding txid.

I'm not defending anybody here. Seems like pitty situation with mistakes done on both sides. So far I'm more on the side of mindetrip but I do not have enough info to be totally sure (check point1 addressed to NORWUSA below)

Hacked account is definitely error on the owner side. Can't blaim the opposite side. People just do not expect they are communicating with hacker.
For myself even different refunding address (from the sending one) Is not sign of hacked account. Actually I would never return the coins back to sending address without confirmation from the counter party as you never know whether the address is under his control (he could be paying using online wallet where usually sending address is not actually your depositing address ... exchanges for example). We all know this not the best way (as then is hard to prove you were the sender) but people makes weird things, so you have to count with it.

@NORWUSA I understand losing 3k USD is very serious (for me it's lot of money too) but your way of making multiple threads, spreading information all across the board and accussating mods/admin does not help to solve the situation at all.

1 - You should have made clear scam accusation thread, provide details  etc. where everybody can independently investigate and give his opinion. I know it's not gonna return you the money, but at least we can find out who is the scammer and mark him red. (sorry, I found it during writing this post but decide to keep this para as it reflects my opinion why such thread should be  made)

2 - To recover your account there is guide how to proceed (sticky thread in meta section) I doubt admin or moderator has time to care your issues without serious proofs ( give them enough info so they can be sure you are saying truth)
Unclear PMs with questions or messages full of insults won't help you at all. Again I understand you are angry, but it's not their fault (most probably) and you should be polite to third party if you expect any help.   

3 - Escrow, always use the escrow. I'm not a good example as I have made the very same trade without it but luckily for me all went smooth (thanks killo17 I'm glad for it).

No offense to anybody. As a third party I would love to contribute solving this issue, pointing the scammer but it's quite unclear what actually happened.



This seems to be the turning point. If mindtrip is aware he dealt with scammers you should both cooperate with authorities to try to catch the offender.

But you have to get the private key to this offline wallet anyway ( this is where I found paper wallets pretty unhandy ). You have to scan the QR code ( if you don't want to type it in by hand) which I found the most easy way to leak (revealed QR is dangerous IMO). And then you have to get the signed tx to online device.

So my advice is to import the wallet to online device spend the coins, throw the paper wallet away and make a new one.

Being extremely cautious is always good. Especially when dealing with bigger amounts.
If you really have a bigger amounts I highly recommend you to purchase hardware wallet (it's much easier to use and even more secure)

Jak dlouho ta věc běží je naprosto irelevantní. Byli tu 2, 3 i pětileté ponzi a jak to pak dopadlo .. jenom více škody.

Nemám nic proti starším lidem (vyjímky se samozřemě najdou). V mnohém jsou rozumnější něž madší generace ale nemyslim že to platí zrovna v oboru nových technologií. Prostě se snadněji nechají zmanipulovat (což mi bohužel přijde i tento případ).
Nevadí, nebudu se v tom dál pitvat. Byl jsi varován a jak s tim naložíš je tvoje věc.

Mimochodem s pomocí google překladače (sám ho používám dost často) už dneska není problém vytáhnout informace i z komplexnějších cizojazyčných článků nebo se lámaně domluvit.
