221  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: BitLasers.com - Handheld Lasers and accessories (We ship worldwide) on: March 28, 2014, 09:00:20 AM
Would there be any interest for some real beasts, specifically 5-6W blue and 1-1.3W green, for around $700-$1000?
Might be. What would the beam profile and divergence look like?

Typical multi-mode diode beams. Rectangle-shaped and not the best divergence. Slightly worse than or comparable to the blue lasers I currently sell, I hear. But I haven't tried them before so I can't say for sure.

2800mW blue laser and violet lasers now back in stock!
Any powerful single mode lasers in sight?

The 800mW violet laser is single mode, it is probably the most powerful single mode diode we'll see in the near future. For diode manufacturer there is simply little meaning in designing single mode diodes with other wavelengths than violet (because they are used in blu-ray drives), as multimode is simpler to engineer at higher powers because they handle heat and current much better.

As for the other single mode lasers I sell, you can get an additional 20-25% power increase if you buy this along with the laser: http://bitlasers.com/opencart/index.php?route=product/product&path=66&product_id=75

EDIT: It seems there are some new blu-ray burners on the market with promising diodes. I might starting listing a 900-1100mW single mode model after some more research but not until a few weeks or so at the earliest, if at all.

225  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 300 Bitcoin Berkshire Hathaway bet on: March 16, 2014, 02:53:03 PM
So this dude has 300 BTC to bet and he doesn't even believe that it they will continue to increase in value?

That's depressing

Right.  Reddit OP agrees with Buffet that Bitcoin is a mirage, yet he makes a wager to earn Bitcoins.

So in his mind he risks Berkshire Hathaway class b shares but stands to gain valueless bitcoin.  Either its a scam or poor wagering as risk/reward is way out of whack.

Except it's opposite.

okay question guys. I have heard many people complain about their refund process. Some people saying I wish they would just refund my BTC.

Well if they gave you back your 10 BTC, that would be worth about $6400.

Rather than if they gave you back the refund in Fiat, it would be 10K.

What am I missing?? 10K buys more than 10 BTC at current market price.
Regards

They want the current dollar value, in BTC.

2800mW blue and 250mW red lasers are now back in stock.

I'm looking for someone to do a review of one or more of my lasers! If you buy a laser and post a review on this forum with at least 300 words and preferably a few pictures or a video, I will refund you one third of the order total! Limited time only. Contact me if you have any questions.
LOL.. I should see if I can find the video I made of me lighting a camp fire with my 1.8W, maybe Grix would refund me 1/3 of the BTC27 I paid for it. Wink

Looking at that number I wonder how rich I'd have been if I had saved all the btc from early purchases Smiley 20/20 hindsight

As much as I appreciate the tape out news, this means that even for us closed batch 1 folk there's absolutely no chance of a Q1 or even April delivery, right?

Will you post to me in Australia if I accept the risk that customs might seize the laser ?

thanks !

Yes I can, as mentioned I ship worldwide. I have had several customers in Australia before.

It seems my most important parts supplier just started accepting bitcoin! This is super cool, one step closer to a closed loop bitcoin economy!

In other news: I plan to open a brand new niche store soon. I believe this will be the first bitcoin-accepting company to sell what I plan to sell, just like BitLasers was (to my knowledge) the first bitcoin-accepting company to sell lasers!

Doesn't look too hard to resolder. Just swipe over all the wires on the back to solder them all on (after applying flux). Then use a copper wick to clean up the joints, like clearing any bridges.

Here's a video tutorial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b9FC9fAlfQE#t=1172

Does anyone know whether the terrible 30-day luck statistic is caused by some problem at the pool in the last month or if it really is just terrible luck?

How can you rate Avalon and KNC as the same grade, when the facts and comments you yourself have written are obviously in favor of KNC? In fact I don't see why KNC is rated mid-tier, save for literally max a couple of weeks delay (less than any other company accepting preorders have managed), they have a perfect reputation.

KNC literally don't care about consumers any more, and if I was KNC myself I wouldn't either with the amount of farm money they make. They're happy to delay shipment to optimise the power consumption for their $10m super farm, at the detriment of buyers. They had working machines they could have churned out at the right hash rates, but they wanted better for THEMSELVES. This is not good for the community.

Avalon screwed up, we know. But before that they did amazing work which made the community lots of money. The old management team has since left, and its now essentially a reworked entity. They've delivered Avalon 2 hardware and chips without problems for months, and continue to do so. In fact, they are only offering <2 week/in hand hardware.

Recent events have more weighting in my rankings, as that's closer to where people are buying. For example if you bought an Avalon 2 now, it would be delivered now. If I bought a Neptune, which I can't, I'd go to the back of the list of 3000 of already delayed Neptunes. That's 3000 customers who's interests they have to put ahead of mine.

I've clearly laid out the conditions for which both companies can improve their ratings with good performance.

Where do you get the idea that the neptunes are delayed? According to KNC they are still on track to deliver neptunes within the promised time. And until that time comes without delivery, or until they announce something different, you have no basis for claiming that there are delays. They have also time and again said that work on their mining farm will not interfere with the neptune designing. And I for one am glad to have a backup plan (hosted mining) if there eventually are delays with my neptune order. It's a win-win for customers and KNC.

Very nice.
Is there much out there more powerful than the 700mW violet for a single-mode laser? I love my big blue one, but you really can't focus it down to much more than a small bar. I'd like to try something that can get really fine.

Unfortunately I think that diode is the most powerful single-mode out there. This is because while most other powerful laser diodes are used in for example laser video projectors where divergence doesn't matter that much, violet diodes are used in blu-ray burners, which requires a very focused dot that you only can get from single-mode diodes.

I find this all very cool.
Though I just cannot understand why you would spend 260 dollars on a laser.

People spend money on lots of weird stuff Smiley When I got my first laser, it didn't take long before I wanted a stronger one because it was so cool. And after the next one I wanted an even stronger one and so on. I know people from laser enthusiast forums who have spent close to a thousand dollars for just a few milliwatts of a rare colored laser such as yellow or cyan.

is knc doing anything at all now? they seem fucking useless now...

where is orama? where is sam?

KNC have gone to shit, i hope they go bankrupt.

If you want communication from knc, this is not the place. Go to their forums, there is a support rep named Kurt constantly answering questions every day.

Hi folks, time for another reality check using very conservative numbers:

Assumptions & Numbers:
1) Delivery date:  05/31/2014
2) Hash: 3 TH
4) Power: 1500  @0.15 rate
5) Start difficulty(assuming +20% per):  3,129,573,175 * 1.2^7 = 11213826512
6) Difficulty increase thereafter: 10% (0.06 profitability decline factor)
7) BTC/USD: $620
8 ) Neptune cost: $10000

Profitability after 12 month: -1792.58 USD (LOSS)

---------------
Pro:
1) Delivered hashrate may be higher than the stated 3 TH

Con(risk):
1) End of may delivery
2) Difficulty increase may be >10% thereafter (given the massive TH boxes coming online)
3) Time resource to setup/maintain hardware
4) Power consumption may be 1500W

Conclusion:
1) You must be batsh** crazy to preorder this hardware.

Those are not very conservative numbers. I'd say a good but very plausible scenario is 3500Ghps speed, 8-10b difficulty at delivery time and on average 5% or less difficulty increase from there on out. Plus the bitcoin value is currently in a post-crash valley.
