241  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Ray Dalio predicting bitcoin to be outlawed on: March 28, 2021, 10:54:59 AM
Blanket bans are unlikely but all other anti-Bitcoin measures aren't outside the realm of possibility, making it harder for Bitcoin to attract more users, almost as if it had been banned. Targeting of fiat on and off-ramps is already a serious hindrance, and many countries are also going after cryptocurrency to cryptocurrency transactions.
242  Economy / Goods / Re: FOR SALE: Original Satoshi Times 03/01/2009 on: March 28, 2021, 10:42:46 AM
Food for though... how hard would be for someone to plagiarize that exact newspaper and make several copies, and how to verify it is genuine?

That's an interesting question you could ask the publisher, the owner, or the editor of the newspaper. Do their lasers, printing plates or printing presses leave any signs that could be used as fingerprints (either intentionally or innately due to the type of gear used)? Is if it difficult to source the exact type of paper that has been used?

Human memory is too fallible for that. Too strong a hit to the head, early-onset dementia or other neurodegenerative disorder and you can say goodbye to your funds.
244  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Which wallets offer the lowest transaction fees to send BTC ? on: March 28, 2021, 06:04:26 AM
When it comes to fees alone all that matters is if you can set your own fees (use the links above to get an estimate how much you should pay depending on how (im)patient you are), and if it uses bech32 addresses (those that start with "bc1", otherwise known as native segwit). Other factors such as transaction types, numbers of outputs being spent, etc. are on you.

Of course, non-custodial local wallets such as Bitcoin Core or Electrum are a much better alternative to online and custodial wallets due to the security aspect alone.

X-ray or Terahertz scanners is not really something I'd be worried about, being profiled and searched if the country whose borders you're crossing does this is something that's more likely to happen. And you can always store it in an encrypted or coded form.
246  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2021-03-15] [Reuters] India to propose cryptocurrency ban, penalising miners on: March 28, 2021, 04:57:56 AM
This. A simple example is that, you can never build a house without bribing the local goons present in every single area of the country. On a broader scale, the civil engineers who are building the houses are forced to buy the building hardware materials from the local goons and if you didn't abide by them you would end up in getting threatened and if you move this case over to the police, the goons would bribe the police and the innocent business owner would end up in jail  Cheesy Simply stating this is a shitty country run by highly corrupted politicians and their mafia like local goon gang.

I heard some interesting firsthand accounts of what it takes for a power-hungry business to get connected to a power company (i.e. a shitload of money in bribes) so I'm not surprised to read stories like these.

and you are frowned upon from starting any kind of businesses.

Why is that? Potential to be extorted?

Almost 80% of the Indian households who work in IT sectors has meagre to zero savings hence one could never invest a proportionate amount in bitcoin. But the one who saves, invest in stocks and bitcoin and they would have made some money if they had entered the market in 2020.

That wouldn't be the case if they bought a bit earlier when BTC was cheaper. The Indian local board on this forum was created many years ago and it wouldn't have been created if there was 0 interest.

Zgubisz go, to jeszcze powinieneś mieć seed phrase (te słowa), aby odzyskać dostęp do środków na innym/nowym urządzeniu.

250  Local / Polski / Re: Lightning Network - ogólna dyskusja on: March 26, 2021, 10:10:18 PM

251  Other / Meta / Re: Bitcointalk forum holding 125 BTC on: March 26, 2021, 10:00:36 PM
The site is fine. What could you possibly add to this forum anyway? (I mean feature-wise)

More advanced mod tools, forum stats, and U2F/FIDO2 authentication would be nice.

It is a damn internet forum and no matter how much you spend on it, it will still be an internet forum. The thing is forums are dead. Reddit is where it is at now.

Unfortunately true to a large extent, especially for English language content.

@Pharmacist

It's actually >10x as much.

253  Economy / Exchanges / Re: localbitcoins is still exisiting im surprised on: March 26, 2021, 12:10:20 PM
It can be used by people who can't have an account at a normal Bitcoin exchange for some reason (KYC failed, country not supported, banks threatening to close their account if they have any transfers to/from exchanges, etc.), and it allows for a lot more payment methods. Otherwise it doesn't make any sense ever since they banned in-person cash trades and started requiring of every user to pass through KYC (and one that can get pretty invasive, too).
254  Economy / Web Wallets / Re: blockchain second password on: March 26, 2021, 11:16:55 AM
When was that? I've been using blockchain.info now blockchain.com wallet for 4 years now but the first time I sign up it's not asking for a secondary password and I created just last year and its not still not asking for a secondary password, you only need one password here but if you lose that password and you did not store the private key you cannot access it anymore.

It was always optional. I'm not sure if it was even possible to set one up at sign up, or if it was possible to set one up only later in somewhere in the settings.
255  Economy / Gambling / Re: bustabit – The original crash game on: March 24, 2021, 07:03:30 PM
Just wait a bit longer. The commission rate keeps increasing and barring a 2018 style bubble pop will likely continue to increase. I think by early summer at the latest we can expect to see a significant decrease of bankroll size, once most users notice the growth of new profits starts decreasing to 0.
256  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Time Magazine: Will start to accept crypto for subscription on: March 24, 2021, 06:25:29 PM
A job offer from Time posted yesterday on LinkedIn, searching for a CFO for NYC, states amongst the required qualifications the following:
Quote
Comfort with Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies.
That shows a line of action, and also another step towards considering bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies as something that is causing an impact on some job profile requirements, and not just those in the technological sphere.

See: https://www.coindesk.com/time-magazine-seeks-new-cfo-lists-comfort-with-bitcoin-as-qualification

That would be an indication they don't purely see it as a passing fad they could milk until the bubble pops. It would be cool if they accepted payments via LN as that's what it's ideally suited for.
257  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: very high fees on exodus when trying to send bitcoin on: March 24, 2021, 02:59:47 AM
Exodus and other custodial wallet often charge insane fees, they have very bad estimate fees and gain profit from there.

Exodus is a non-custodial wallet.

One of the best-recommended things, if you want, is to convert your BTC to altcoins to lessen the fee and take it back again to bitcoin. Also, you can check the different platforms to know the transaction fee prioritization.

But then you have to pay transaction fees when converting BTC back and forth which are going to eat your savings and then some.
258  Economy / Web Wallets / Re: How did this hack happen? on: March 24, 2021, 02:25:58 AM
Valid point and wifi can definitely be sketchy but this was with the latest xfinity router and a non-default password. I am not a wifi hacking expert but I think you need proximity to the wifi in order to hack it. This was in the suburbs with zero foot or car traffic and there might have been two houses in wifi range. The chance that one of those houses had some hacker in it sniffing packets at 8:30 on a Sunday morning seems very very low.

There are many possible attack vectors. Could be some sort of DNS hijacking. Could be one of your apps if I had to guess:

My phone has a ton of apps but none of those types of apps. No "antivirus" apps. It's a pixel 3a and runs great on its own.

You can check them all closely to see if there's anything sketchy.
259  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2021-03-15] [Reuters] India to propose cryptocurrency ban, penalising miners on: March 24, 2021, 01:59:17 AM
You forget that India is a country with almost 1.4 billion people, and what in that context is 8 million, or as we have already concluded probably more people who own or trade cryptocurrencies? If it were about 14 million, it would still be only 1% of the total population - they do not pose a danger to politicians, especially if they are not united and begin to become politically active.

The whole thing is actually on the Indian crypto community, they have to exert as much pressure on the authorities as possible and show that they oppose such a law. It may not work, but if they do not raise their voice, they will give legitimacy to government actions.

There is a saying that says “Bad government is chosen by good people who stay at home”, of course in the context of the election process.

I imagine cryptocurrency holders are disproportionately wealthy, compared to the rest of the population. If India's campaign laws permit this, theoretically <1% of the vote could have several times the power.

Here they are not breaking the law. Politicians and powerful people are using proxy ownership, which is not illegal as per the law. Their coins are being held by their proxies who are not Indian nationals. It is allowed in the proposed legislation and therefore you can't say that they are doing something illegal. However, for the ordinary people there is no such provision. An average Indian earns $1,000-$2,000 per year and he can't afford to find proxies in foreign nations.

Wouldn't they prefer if they could hold and transact with Bitcoin without having to rely on intermediaries?
260  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Issues with Binance on: March 24, 2021, 01:42:45 AM
I think they can be detected by some websites as well if it's important enough for them but it's very unlikely that Binance or any exchange for that matter cares that much to go to that extent to catch VPN users.

With the amount of pressure major sites accepting US residents/citizens face, solely using a residential IP address might not be enough. Maybe they're being cautious to avoid false positives for now, hence the numbers of VPN users from the US who could be using the site without problems.
