For the average Joe, Bitcoin is not any more a train about to leave the station.

Make that: "For the average Joe, Bitcoin is not yet a train about to leave the station."

- But it will be. If not this month, then the next. I called a 1-3 month consolidation in 100-120 area before a supermove up. We are right there even now, 4 weeks after the bubble burst. If I panic buy at 144 meanwhile, it is my own problem.

It has plenty of time to go to sub-$100 in May. Even as of this writing, there is $500k bid volume to 102, which is so pathetic that if I show a wall of 1k coins like I did yesterday, it will crash right here and now. It takes about 45 mins to send the coins.

please do then!
EDIT: Wow there is 160K BTC being transfered through many 500BTC sends right now with a very cryptic message embedded "one chinese sb which love 8".

Whats up with that? No way that much could be sold at once. Right? *gulp*

No, it's just the same 500BTC sending back and forth

For "one chinese sb which love 8", SB is a Chinese slang literally means "stupid puxxy". In proper English, that means: "A Chinese fool who loves the number 8".
2422  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / This guy spams the blockchain by sending 500BTC back and forth on: May 07, 2013, 08:54:53 AM

Miner should not accept a chain of zero fee transactions in the same block.

By the way, it seems he's playing with raw transaction. I wish he will somehow screw up and lose the 500BTC forever  Grin

Yep, Chart Buddy is totally broken.

Can't retrieve latest data? It should have a circuit break in this case
2424  Economy / Speculation / Re: I don't understand why someone would buy and sell at the same time on: May 06, 2013, 02:55:54 PM
Why would you think it's the same person buying and selling?
2425  Economy / Speculation / Re: You western guys are over-interpreting the CCTV coverage on: May 06, 2013, 01:46:37 PM
What is it they say? The only bad publicity is no publicity.

Sure, I never say it's bad. It's actually GOOD because it lets more people know it, and it does. Just remind you don't fall into the slippery slope fallacy.
2426  Economy / Speculation / Re: You western guys are over-interpreting the CCTV coverage on: May 06, 2013, 01:44:11 PM
According to someone from reddit on the artice on Xinhuanet:
Quote
Source is Beijing Evening News. It's a Party-owned publication.

It's reposted on xinhuanet, website of China's official press agency.

As I said, the Xinhua agency has just made an epic mistake on President Xi. Comparing with XI, bitcoin is just SHIT (in the view of CCP)

If it was just CCTV maybe you could say the party did not sanction or approve it. However, having a report on xinhuanet as well 2 days latter suggests the party is fully aware of it and does approve it.

You say xinhuanet made a mistake with reporting of some official. That isn't relevant. It isn't just one of the CCP controlled media reporting on bitcoins in a very positive light, its two. One mistake ok, but the second time there is no mistake.

I bet in this forum there are only less than 5 persons have the experience in using Internet in China in 1998 --- and I'm one of them. I could freely visit any website without any censorship. As soon as they realized the threatening features of the web, the experience became worse and worse.

Another story is about Falungong (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falun_Gong). They had very good relationship with the authorities in early 1990s, and was not declared as a heresy until they protested in front of the CCP headquarter in 1999.

China is not North Korea. Chinese media, including official media, has limited freedom to report apolitical news. CCTV and Xinhua will keep reporting Bitcoin as long as it is considered as technical and financial, until some events really trigger their political thinking.

By the way, the one on xinhuanet is just a repost from another media and is only semi-official.

It is a hype, at least partially:

Should we close this thread and make a new one again? It's getting too many pages again.....
2430  Economy / Speculation / You western guys are over-interpreting the CCTV coverage on: May 06, 2013, 07:11:38 AM
There are two lines in the discussion related to the CCTV coverage

I totally agree with this one:
Quote
30 minutes coverage on CCTV -> More Chinese people know BTC -> More download and search of bitcoin in China -> Positive for the price of BTC

But this is one just an illusion of China in the eyes of western world:
Quote
CCP controls all media in China -> 30 minutes coverage on CCTV (also xinhuanet.com today) == CCP embraces BTC / BTC is legal in China

Here's why:

1. CCP does control all media in China. CCTV and xinhuanet.com are definitely directly operated by the CCP. However, it doesn't mean that every single story on these CCP-operated media represents the thinking of CCP. Actually, they occasionally (if not fequently) make mistakes. Just a few weeks ago, Xinhua reported a fake news about Xi Jinping (the CCP president) riding taxi.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/china/10002599/Xi-Jinpings-anonymous-taxi-ride-through-Beijing.html

It is well-known that in China there are very strict rules in reporting the activities of the major officials, while the Xinhua could still make a mistake like this.

2. About the legality of BTC in China. Please understand that there is NO law in China. CCP rules everything. All businesses are running more or less in grey area, and is definitely so for BTC business. If CCP find BTC threatening their dictatorship, they will shut it down next second with no mercy (at least the exchanges, not sure if they could really shut down the bitcoin network itself). Therefore, I will never leave a single satoshi and a cent of CNY on any Chinese exchange for more than 24 hours.

3. A Chinese blogger has a similar view as mine: http://blog.sina.com.cn/s/blog_67a17e000101kzoc.html . He thinks the CCTV is just trying to report a trendy topic without thinking too much about politics. They will regret because Chinese government is actually printing much harder than Ben.

Sorry but I may need to jump the boat very soon due to the soaring difficulty.

you mean exit mining?  or this pool?

This pool. As difficulty is soaring, mining in a low hash rate DGM pool is suicidal. Due to the longer rounds, you will expect less reward when difficulty is still low

What will happen if you try to send 1.42052000 BTC, and your inputs total 1.42055000? Will the standard bitcoin client disregard sending a change TX, as that will make it nonstandard?

Yes. You need more input(s) to make the change >5430 sat

Well, I'm in, just called the real estate agent to sell my dad's house  Grin

Well hold on with selling the farm just yet. As far as I remember, classics require confirmation of this pattern before it can be considered as a low risk entry. For the confirmation, there are two criteria 1. Today's candle must close 2. The next one  must be green. Entry now would have to be considered as a high risk one.

BTW it got confirmed. TA sez we will see 175 shortly. Of course TA is a load of bollocks. But when someone in the know doing it maybe it is a little less bollocks than usual.  Grin

maybe. it looks like a classic bearish wedge, but there's always Monday money...

Japanese bank holiday, no Monday money
2435  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: RIP Satoshi on: May 06, 2013, 04:06:23 AM
FUD!

You can still send a satoshi if ---

1. You mine your own block, or

2. At least one miner agrees to mine the tiny transaction for you.

They are working on a scheduled maintenance to replace the server. They have serious lag in the past weeks.

fyi - btcchina is back up and it looks like the downtime was caused due to a switch over to cloudflare for ddos protection; their ip is now being sourced out of europe -- things are looking up for them
 Cheesy

perhaps i spoke too soon -- had mini heart attack when i saw this

Why would you call this bearish? The last wedge with a similar shape from 80 to 100 has been proven as bullish

bearish wedge coming to a close right now. midnight dump?

4-hour scale:

-===-
