2521  Economy / Economics / Re: Thoughts for Improving Bitcoin's Popularity on: August 31, 2011, 03:23:25 AM

While I haven't given sufficient thought as to exactly how Bitcoin can address these desires, I have a few general suggestions.  The first of these is simplification and security rolled into one.  Find a way to merge the Bitcoin client with a miner ALREADY REGISTERED TO A POOL.  So, in other words, the only thing to do to get started would be 1.)  Download client/miner  2.)  Click confirmation email which will confirm your account and provide you with username and secure password 3.) Start mining.  Perhaps an automatic account on Mt. Gox or TradeHill could also be created when downloading this client.

Bad idea.

Next, with the simple startup initiated, consider their desires.  People should somehow be recognized and rewarded for their involvement with Bitcoin.   Create a social network site like Second Life.  Linden dollars worked only because of Second Life's social nature.  Create something like HotorNot.com  where it costs only .1 BTC to put up a photo.  Have contests on the site where the guys/gals that receive the highest ratings of sexiness are rewarded in BTC which they can then cash out in USD.  Create a site like YouTube where Ads  linked to popular videos are paid for with BTC.

Great idea. =)

Good sentiment in your post, OP. Well-written.  Your observation that Bitcoin is not likely to "catch on" in the same manner as Beanie Babies is correct - Bitcoin is not easy, cute, and cuddly. Instead, it's damn complicated, weird, and controversial politically, economically, and even philosophically.

It will take a while for the populace to realize that, unlike Beanie Babies, Bitcoins can actually revolutionize the very foundations of society =)

2522  Bitcoin / Meetups / Re: EUROPEAN BITCOIN CONFERENCE 2011, PRAGUE NOV 25-27 on: August 31, 2011, 03:15:11 AM
I did just check the conference website, and it indicates that attendees can pay either with bitcoins or wire transfer. So it seems they do intend to accept bitcoins, but perhaps the method is not yet determined.

Price
310 Euro

This looks amazing and very professional.

But, the price... the organizers will accept payment in Bitcoin, right? Speak with Steve and Tony at Bit-pay.com for an easy solution.

Got a response from them after I inquired why the convo was removed:

Hi Erik,

You are welcome to repost your conversations, but maybe consider formulating a bit less like promotion to avoid it being removed by our moderators again.

Thanks,

TED Admin

I don't understand why they claimed it sounded "promotional"?  Most of the post I made was phrased in question form, such as "in what ways will Bitcoin permit various economic groups to interact across government boundaries.." etc. My only guess is that the mod there figured that Bitcoin was like Paypal, in being a company/organization. With that frame of reference, I can see why any mention of Bitcoin might seem promotional.

It does bother me that I must now repost a new convo, and hope that new people comment on it. I'm going to respond to their email and ask if the first post can be re-instated, and that I will edit it to fit better within their guidelines.

All part of the struggle =)

2526  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoins Give Rise to Crypto Casinos on: August 30, 2011, 05:51:39 AM
Is there a REAL Casino that accepts bitcoins yet?
In other words, someone who actually runs a real online casino site that accepts bitcoins?
By Casino, I do not mean 1 or 2 games.

2527  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: BOUNTY - PHP programmer that can read Korean on: August 30, 2011, 05:33:03 AM
Steve - you familiar with oDesk.com for outsourcing and finding contractors? I use it frequently - there would be many PHP programmers who know Korean. I could hire someone there on your behalf. Send an email if interested.

2530  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] Bit-pay Merchant Solutions for Charities & Non-Profits on: August 30, 2011, 01:22:55 AM
Awesome!

When the charity signs up, I notice they go to the default "merchant" sign up page. Is there a step where they indicate whether they're a charity?

Their status as a Charity will be indicated by their EIN.  If they are not registered with the IRS as a charity, then we would treat them like a traditional merchant.

Okay - make sure that's placed out front during the sign up process so charities understand. Otherwise, they'll think they're accidentally signing up as a "merchant" because all the wording is currently geared toward that.

Only half joking here... holding a Bitcoin event at Bretton Woods would be awesome for publicity.  Grin
2534  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: TED discussion - Bitcoin - Commerce without Borders on: August 29, 2011, 04:20:01 PM

1) Did you actually read the convo I had opened at TED?

nope didn't need too, all of you guys that do this stuff have schemer written all over you.

If you are to criticize someone's actions, at least make the tactical decision to know what those actions are... lest the perception develop that you may be ignorant of the subject on which you speak.
2535  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: TED discussion - Bitcoin - Commerce without Borders on: August 29, 2011, 03:27:58 PM
the reason why so many of you fail at promoting bitcoin and end up doing the exact opposite and fucking it over, is because people need to get to it on their own, like it's the best kept secret ever, which in some ways it still is. It's the lucrativeness that bring people to it, not some bullshit marketing or advertising
All it needs is people who accept bitcoin and face to face word of mouth, by people that know what they are talking about.

the way you guys go about doing this shit, has the S's (schemer, scammer and spammer) written all over it.

1) Did you actually read the convo I had opened at TED?

2) If so, how could you possibly have perceived that as "spammy"??

The convo was totally appropriate, given TED's audience and demographics. The entire thesis was how Bitcoin may change economic relationships in poor countries. I understand some on these forums have spammed promotion... but I don't, and this wasn't.
2536  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: TED discussion - Bitcoin - Commerce without Borders on: August 29, 2011, 03:22:43 PM
They did remove the conversation! I got an email saying it was "too self-promotional." I've written them back and will update here if they respond.

If I had posted there ten years ago about how VoIP protocol might change the way the the world talks to each other, would they have removed it?! How is Bitcoin different?

I'm trying to start a VEF<->BTC local exchange too.

Good! Please do set up an exchange. Venezuelans should have a place to purchase Bitcoins... I'm sure they'll find international purchases somewhat easier.

2539  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Decentralization? My ass... on: August 28, 2011, 09:37:22 PM
Bitcoin is decentralized because no one party has monopoly control over the system. That DOES NOT mean that resources and influence will not coalesce around certain points (MtGox, the core dev team, etc.).

However, there is all the difference in the world between a system like Bitcoin and a system like the Federal Reserve, where one organization has monopoly power to print, manipulate, and control.

Don't confuse "decentralized" with "evenly distributed."
2540  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Hard Numbers On How Much Money a Merchant Would Save If They Used Bitcoins on: August 28, 2011, 09:24:10 PM
Although the numbers look great on paper, the fact remains no merchant in their right mind will forego accepting payment via credit cards, PayPal, etc., just because of lower fees alone. They would lose more business than they receive via Bitcoin. Most merchants will wait for the critical mass of people using Bitcoin before they even commit.

There's no reason to stop accepting the other forms of payment.
