2881  Economy / Reputation / Whitelisting for Brand New accounts (Enable posting) on: August 17, 2021, 08:36:07 PM
What is Proxyban?
When a user is proxybanned, it means their IP has some level of evil associated with it from previous use and they need to pay a stipulated fee to enable posting.

Evil IP is a deterrent to prevent banned users from registering new accounts on the forum;
When you register, the IP that you used when you submitted the registration form is used to calculate your evilness. The more frequently this IP or its neighbors were banned, the more evil is associated with your account. The amount of evil associated with an IP decays slowly over time, but the amount of evil associated with an account does not. You must pay or be manually whitelisted to enable posting on one of these "banned" accounts.
...
Currently each unit of evil requires a payment of 4023 satoshi. You only need to pay something if you have 1 or more, though.

This feature however sometimes affects honest new users who may be discouraged from registering on the forum. In this case staffs have the ability to whitelist new users and now some members have been giving that ability as well;
Only abused IP ranges have to pay a fee. The fee is an anti-abuse measure, and it is not meant to be (and isn't) much of a source of revenue.

If any very-veteran members want to volunteer, I can give you the ability to whitelist users. (All Staff can already whitelist users, as well.) Perhaps then someone could create a topic like "List of email addresses for people who can whitelist you for free", which I could link-to on the evil fee page. However, these IPs have evil for a reason. If it was sufficient for them to just solve a captcha or something, I'd have them do that. Before whitelisting someone, you have to do something to be pretty sure that they're not evading a ban and just going to get banned again. You may get the impression from complaints on the forum that everyone hits the fee and it's never warranted, but this is selection bias: the fee is more rare, and the vast majority of accounts that hit it should not be whitelisted.

How do you go about it?
If you're a brand new user to the forum with no previously bannd accounts;
• Send me an email to -
Code:
whitelistby_upgrade00@protonmail.com
• You may need to answer a few questions which I would ask randomly,
• Based on your answers, your request could be accepted or rejected.

You could also get a reputable account to vouch for you on this thread.
2882  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Saving Vs Staking on: August 17, 2021, 08:16:02 PM
Which platforms like Nexo offers 6% annual interest, compared to others. And am also sure Binanve offers staking feature, but not sure of it's rate..
I do not see this as incentive enough to give up control of your funds. Bitcoin does not have any built in staking feature (neither should it) and to stake one has to store their bitcoins on a third party website for an extended period of time. This poses a lot of security risk as; not your keys, not your coins. In this case you could as well hold unto fiat.
2883  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin solving the problem of intermediary on: August 17, 2021, 05:37:41 PM
What is your personal experience with Bitcoin?
A common example of my experience with Bitcoin is here on the forum. I have been an a signature campaign for a couple of years now and have always received payments in Bitcoin each week. Without Bitcoin it would have been amost impossible as I would not want to post my banking details here on the forum, in addition to the stress of actually receiving international transactions through the banking system, Bitcoin eliminates the need for a third party and allows seamless transactions.

I've also been part of donations using Bitcoin and it went smoothly as usual.
2884  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Challenge Faced with Blockchain Analysis (Case Study) on: August 17, 2021, 04:55:57 PM
Lots of information can be extracted from transaction time, amount and associated information. Its all about pattern recognition and hypothesis can be build.
I never said one cannot extract information from a transaction, but as you said you can only form a hypothesis or an informed guess. Determining the exact purpose of an address with 100% assurance is very unlikely.
2885  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Challenge Faced with Blockchain Analysis (Case Study) on: August 17, 2021, 10:26:00 AM
1. Is this wallet some donation wallet?
You can not completely ascertain the purpose of a wallet by watching the transactions made through it.

2. Is so who is processing the donation of the wallet as all input transactions have similarity?
Bitcoin is a pseudo anonymous network, you cannot know who is processing the transactions.

3. If not donation wallet, then what kind of wallet it can be as size of each transactions is small?
By size, do you mean amount being transacted or the size of the transaction?
Judging by the address it's a native segwit wallet.
2886  Other / Meta / Re: Are useful links allowed or are they categorically excluded? on: August 17, 2021, 09:45:07 AM
What exactly does the ban message show? If it's for plagiarism, it's usually mentioned.
IIRC, all the banned messages are similar for all users regardless the reason with a hint to why the user was banned, using the two too reasons for ban. It should look something like this;
Quote
"Sorry banned user, you are banned from posting or sending personal messages on this forum.
You have been permanently banned by a forum moderator, probably due to spam or plagiarism. You may appeal here, but your chances are not good: banappeals...@ appeal mail"
The hint was recently added to the ban message.

My friend told me that he tried to appeal, but before he did, there was a warning that the chances of being accepted were almost non-existent
The chances are unlikely, but if they have a strong case, they should go ahead and appeal the ban.
2887  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin adoption and increase in crime rate, how correlated are they?. on: August 17, 2021, 08:37:51 AM
Criminals wont rob you on the street and ask for crypto.
Crime is not correlated with cryptocurrency, but it is very possible for criminals to attack you and request for your private keys to assess your coins - this is an example of the $5 wrench attack.

That's why it's advisable you do not store your funds on a device you carry around and do not publicize your crypto holdings as that would attract scams and theft attacks.
2888  Other / Meta / Re: Are useful links allowed or are they categorically excluded? on: August 17, 2021, 06:01:06 AM
It is not against the rules to insert links into a thread, I have done that a lot. It's only against the rules when it's done with malicious intent (lik a malware), solely to advertise a site (like a referral link), if they used link shorteners, or if you're spamming the forum with links to a particular website.

Should the moderator who decides to ban for the presence of a link notify the OP of the fact?
Moderators already have a lot of work, notifying members of rules they should have read isn't one of them.
2889  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Guide on bitcointalk on: August 16, 2021, 10:05:49 PM
Newbie - Read Before Posting
The above thread contains useful informations and links about the forum, you should look out for the forum rules and try to avoid breaking any of them - In summary do not plagiarize, spam or spread harmful links
Also look out for sticky threads in each board, there you'll find the local rules of each section of the forum.
2890  Economy / Economics / Re: Is MFS preventing the growth of Bitcoin? on: August 16, 2021, 10:01:45 PM
There are thousands of alternative coins (altcoins) being created daily and they all run on the blockchain, more of these are created daily. Bitcoin does not need monopoly to grow in adoption.
There are so many other payment options out there, but none has the unique qualities if Bitcoin.

You send and receive money, free, instantly, even fractions of a penny is possible

This is exactly the reason why people probably wont even start to consider using bitcoin / crypto because the functionality is pretty much similar. People wont even bother to know more in depth about bitcoin because all they know is that as long as it can be used to send and receive money then its similar to cash while in fact it is not
Such people who do not bother to look beyond the features of sending and receiving funds probably do not need to use it.
2891  Other / Meta / Re: Scam campaigns should not be allowed to stay on: August 16, 2021, 09:15:13 PM
No offense, Upgrade00, but that's an excuse.  I've been hearing the same excuse for years masquerading as a valid explanation, which it is not.  Other forums will ban even suspected scammers without question or appeal--so why not bitcointalk?  That's the question you should be asking.
I can take the quote from theymos which I linked above, "This is a pseudonymous forum which emphasizes personal freedom and therefore also personal responsibility", this suggests that the forum is mirroring Bitcoin in the sense that as you are your own bank and it's your responsibility to protect your funds, you also should learn to adopt the best security practice to avoid scams. Full autonomy means you are fully responsible, so rather than trying to create a safe community Wich is not possible, it is better to allow users understand that there are scams everywhere and they need to take pro active measures to protect themselves.

Bitcointalk is not like other forums where they can ban users on the whim that they are shady. This forum was not designed to function with a central authority which takes action on users based on suspicion or their perspective.
2892  Other / Meta / Re: Scam campaigns should not be allowed to stay on: August 16, 2021, 07:34:22 PM
Plagiarism is a bannable offence, I think participating in an OPEN scam campaign for the sake of making money deserves the same punishment
This takes us back to how possible it is to determine a scam and if it is feasible for the mods to police every signature campaign posted on the forum, that would be a ton of work and would not be very successful.

To add on that lots of platforms gets accused of scam and these issues linger for a long time and probably ends in no definite result or the user could be wrong and the issue fixed. If it was just a red flag, it could be removed easily, but reinstating a banned user who may have abandoned the forum is a different case.
2893  Other / Meta / Re: Scam campaigns should not be allowed to stay on: August 16, 2021, 06:04:18 PM
I have a question for the house if giveaways are banned why can't scam signature campaigns be banned or totally removed from the services board?
That would be because scams are not moderated and as such no action can be taken by the mods against them. Scams are almost impossible to fully regulate and any attempt to do this could create a false feeling if safety while there would still be tons of scams around.

The forum has a trust system which helps to notify other users of possible scam and high risk situations, but each user is solely responsible for their actions and in-actions;
This is a pseudonymous forum which emphasizes personal freedom and therefore also personal responsibility, so scammers are common. When trading, it's best to assume that everyone is trying to scam you, and act accordingly. Use an escrow, and take note of each user's trust ratings next to their posts and on their profiles. When you are more familiar with people around the forum, you should define your own trust list rather than using the default.
2894  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Why some small coins rise in price for 10%-20% in a day WITHOUT any news? on: August 16, 2021, 03:43:34 PM
It could still very well be a market manipulation from whales to pump up the price and dump at a much higher price.
Small coins or those with lower market caps are very susceptible to manipulations from whales and shills which can significantly affect the price

My best guess is that it has to do with some technical analysis that causes whales to start buying and this is causing some chain reaction
Technical analysis is a reading strategy, but it is also dependent on the fundamentals of that project. No trader would expect a relatively unknown currency to grow in price just because.
2895  Other / Meta / Re: Confused about the advertising rule (#22) on: August 16, 2021, 01:54:08 PM
I guess this is a rule in which each case is considered uniquely, based on the mods interpretation.
• If someone where to ask for suggestions about a mixer or an exchange, I could recommend chipmixer or bestchange respectively, if I've used their service and was satisfied with it, I could also insert a link to make it easier for them to find the website and check it out.
• However, in a different situation, like when someone links a website in a thread that was not requesting for it, or is not directly linked to the topic, this is an obvious advertisement and would likely lead to it getting deleted.

I'm mainly curious in what extent should I be careful when I'm writing regarding a product.
As long as you're not shilling the website nor were you paid to make that particular post, you should be fine and shouldn't be too bothered.
A mod may disagree with you on some occasions, but a couple of deleted replies doesn't hurt anyone.
2896  Other / Meta / Re: Is Bitcointalk.org losing user base? on: August 16, 2021, 01:48:49 PM
one of my friends quit because she envied others for their merit coz she had zero. Though I do think her words really don't deserve merit, her confidence wasn't satisfied anyway.
With such mindset, it's little wonder she found it difficult to get merits. Merits are of little value besides forum rank, a lot of members got airdropped lots of merit during the merit launch but have very little knowledge about the forum or Bitcoin.

The merit mechanism is to encourage everyone to communicate more and express their inner thoughts. No matter if your idea is right or wrong, if you express your opinion and are useful to others, others will give you merit.
Merits were implemented to ensure only those contributing quality content rank up, thereby discouraging spam content all over the forum, it was later followed by the newbie restriction, which was implemented for the same purpose.
2897  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Michael Saylor Says Bitcoin is Hope For Canada on: August 15, 2021, 08:33:54 PM
Michael Saylor, who has become a bull in the cryptocurrency with the purchase of bitcoin, posted a post from the official bitcoin page on Twitter on his page.
There is no such thing as an official Bitcoin page on any social platform. Bitcoin is decentralized and no one can create an official account for it. The handle in question was created late last year and is simply an account that discusses Bitcoin and related topics.

hyping is always the key here and we love it!  BTC
No it isn't. Hype creates temporary price changes, but cannot sustain prolonged growth.
2898  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: 3 types of Newbies on: August 15, 2021, 07:50:09 PM
There is no problems about newbies at least they  did not do something wrong or against the Rules and regulations to this Forum
No one said there is any problem with newbies, the topic you brought up; about there being different type of newbie ranked users on the forum, is what is being discussed.

This forum is the too destination for cryptocurrency discussions and as such it would attract different kinds of users, the good, bad, trolls etc. There is nothing peculiar about the newbie rank apart from the fact that it has the highest number of members and spammers never go past that rank, so overtime it seems like majority of newbies are net negative to the forum as the helpful ones rank up pretty quickly.

For me, there are only two types of users on the forum; those who are willing to contribute to the growth of the forum and those who are not.
2899  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How I wish i knew about Bitcoin before now on: August 14, 2021, 10:01:50 PM
sometimes I do imagine the net worth of people that had stored Bitcoin in there fortfolios since the early stage of Bitcoin existence till now that the price had gone really far from the dip.
A lot of them sold their bitcoins very early, either at the slightest dip or increase in price. There was no crystal ball to know how many h it would grow in value or price history to use as a template. Most people who regret buying early would have probably sold as early too.

I just hope the market can reset so I can buy more from a good price.
In ten years time, it would probably not matter if you bought at $20k or $50k.

How I wish Bitcoin antagonists could understand what they're missing from the internet gold.
The banks and government understand Bitcoin and that's the main reason they are antagonists, as it challenges their control over the global finances.
2900  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Joy wants to learn Cryptocurrency on: August 12, 2021, 08:14:42 AM
Everyone have to be very careful while searching for knowledge on YouTube.
Not just on YouTube, every social media platform is filled with scammers who are always coming up with updates was to rip you off or tonsteal your identity for sale. It's usually advisable to have a different device for browsing the internet and another (airgapped) for storing your funds, or much preferably, you keep them on a hardware wallet. This way your finds are not directly exposed to scams or malware's which you can mistakenly click on.

Also, if any offer seems too good to be true, it probably is.
