I'd recommend DCE Brief. I also check into CoinDesk from time to time. You might also look at Medium, and find specific authors who write about cryptocurrency news. Just take everything you read with a large grain of salt. Have fun Smiley
302  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: HOW TO protect yourself from Scammers on: May 12, 2018, 05:05:19 PM
ICOs are a huge problem. 97% fail regardless of intention going in. Many are scams from the beginning, but there are plenty where the project leaders sincerely intend to follow through once they raise the money but they can't deliver for any number of reasons. Additionally, governments all over the world are cracking down on ICOs because most of their tokens, probably all of them, actually are securities and their not registering as a security is a direct violation of the law, and not just in the United States. Trading platforms which support ICO tokens that are actually unregistered securities are also facing increasing scrutiny, as they could also be breaking the law if they provide markets for unregistered securities. This means that even if the ICO you invested in was run by honest people, and even if those people had the skills to deliver on their promises, there's still the issue that they have broken the law by not registering their security. This means that the government in the country they operate could shut them down any day and that would mean you lose your entire investment as well.

On a technical level, ICOs could be a great way for legitimate companies to raise money, but it has to be done legally and with investor protection in mind and a legal pathway has not been established anywhere.

Because of all this, my advice would be to simply avoid all ICOs. Don't invest in them.

Thanks for all these links. I will definitely take a look. I awarded you some merit for the post too, because it's truly informative, helpful, etc.

For all you people who joined this forum *only* to make money as soon as possible, yes, sorry to disappoint you, but this is precisely the category of users the forum moderators are trying to weed out. Bye bye!

If you joined this forum because you want to learn about cryptocurrencies and what's going on in our industry, and possibly earn legitimate money by growing your skill set and contributing your own skills to projects, then welcome here! Learn all you can, make some friends, network, contribute meaningfully to projects that you believe in and which pass due diligence, and you will do well regardless of your forum rank. It's really that simple.

That's interesting that you are tracking s-merit. Who (generally speaking) is receiving it? Does it go primarily to already established members who would likely be very knowledgeable? Or is it going to new members who are showing a capacity to make intelligent posts?
<...>
I posted quite a few topics with statistics on sMerit, but on Meta. I find them quite meaningful overall so I’ll share the links here to the main ones I've created for those interested:

[update 29/03/2018] Stats on Which Ranks send sMerit to which Ranks:  Which Ranks send sMerit to which Ranks.
[update 19/04/2018] Stats on the Rank pipeline:  Stats on the Rank pipeline - How many are we on the way to ranking up? extension.
[update 04/05/2018] Stats on which forum sections/subsections receive sMerit and their weekly evolution:  Forum Metrics - Section/subsection sMerit breakdown.

There are interesting too, but from more specific angles:
[update 08/05/2018] Stats on first users after Merit kick-off - What the've been up to:  Analysis of users after Merit kick-off - What the've been up to.
[update 08/05/2018] Stats on Deleted posts with sMerit:  Analysis of Deleted Posts with sMerit .
[update 20/04/2018] Stats on Forum evolution:  For forum nostalgics - how data show forum evolution.
[update 03/04/2018] Stats on Rank composition by Forum Structure:  Rank composition by Forum Structure - Where a Rank gets sMerit from.

The first one approaches the questions you ask, being the second one inherently interesting since it shows where we are placed on the rank-pipeline. The third is very interesting since it covers the sMerit awarded section/subsections with specific weekly breakdown.

The statistics are statical, and thus relative to a specific date of data compilation. Some would be interesting to update perhaps further ahead.

304  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: How to known a Scam ICO on: May 12, 2018, 02:10:02 PM
People have mentioned looking over the website and whitepaper for obvious typos, bad grammar, etc., and that is a good start. Keep in mind, however, that having a clean and slick looking website and whitepaper is by no means a guarantee of anything. It's very easy to throw a few hundred dollars at a good website with edited content. It doesn't cost much more to come up with cool looking graphics. It is far more difficult to do the real world work it takes to actually deliver on the concept presented. Before you invest, you need to satisfactorily answer the question: Can they deliver?

Also, don't assume you know how to do due diligence if you've never successfully invested before. Look it up and learn what it is and practice looking over financial statements and such. Actually, you could eliminate most ICOs by simply contacting the team and requesting a financial statement of past earnings and expenses. Even if you don't know how to read it, ask for it. Most are unable to even produce that basic bit of documentation, which is why they are trying to bypass the ordinary process of fundraising for their idea in the first place.
305  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: DNotes 2.0 - 4/2/2018 Now Live on: May 12, 2018, 01:57:19 PM
I'm not involved in Bitcoin and cryptocurrency but was referred to DNotes in regards to your venture capital program where you help companies raise up to 3 million dollars through legal fundraising. The ICO route currently seems very risky, if not outright illegal, but you list on the white paper that DNotes will be facilitating ICO's. What might that look like, and will there be investor protections?

Will DNotes Consulting and Venture Capital be focused on funding for cryptocurrency based businesses only, or can unrelated businesses participate also?

Hi Member Hero, welcome to DNotes.

DNotes Global NextGenVC is contingent on the successful completion of our Reg. A+ Mini-IPO Tier 2 to raise up to $50 million from accredited and non-accredited investors.

During the first year of operation, NextGenVC will select one among many potential candidates that best fit our business model and best in class mindset. It does not have to be in the cryptocurrency business but one that could benefit from our association as a digital currency and blockchain technology leader. High preference will be given to companies that have a revenue producing history of at least two years with high growth and profit potential but constrained by other shortcomings. Up to $3,000,000 will be funded by our group to best position the company for successful funding.

We will mutually select a funding program that best meet the company's capital needs provided that we can be in compliance with existing security laws in a security token offering. The security token will be offered in conjunction with DNotes blockchain and DNotes Global exchange when available. More details will be disclosed in the coming months. We believe that ICO can be an excellent tool to facilitate capital formation but must be structured with consumer protection and in compliance with existing security laws.

This is in line with our vision of mass adoption of DNotes and the best use of DNotes Global's fully integrated ecosystems. However, please understand that we will be very selective.

Thank you for the speedy reply. So if a successful candidate will exchange equity for acceleration capital and consultation services, does this mean DNotes consultation services will be provided over the duration of the businesses lifetime? Or will equity be sold off as DNotes so chooses?

From what I have seen, DNotes has a good business model. What terrifies me the most about cryptocurrency is inadvertently being caught up with criminal activity, and being found guilty by association. Until such risks are mitigated, conservative investors will not be participating in cryptocurrency. If DNotes can pull off what is being claimed, it will remove entry barriers for major investment firms who are chomping at the bit to place their bets. At that point I would consider adding cryptocurrency to my investment portfolio.

Can you give me an idea of which stock exchanges DNotes Global might be listed on?

Some analysts are calling for corrections/reversals in these respective markets. would it make sense for DNotes to avoid exposure to these markets until they stabilize and return to their average trendline?

Sorry for taking up so much time of your time with all these questions and thank you in advance for the reply.

Your questions are most welcome here. They represent a different but extremely valuable perspective. A lot of us who are into cryptocurrencies kind of got lucky in certain ways, and now we have to really cram to learn about how investments and high finances really work. So please keep asking, and we may have some questions for you too to help with our education Smiley

My wallet works fine and it's on a machine running Windows 10. Could it be a firewall issue?

Is anyone else still having wallet problems? Tried again yesterday on my daughter's Windows 10 system from scratch and it still is hanging.

307  Other / Meta / Re: wiser's application to be a merit source on: May 12, 2018, 12:36:23 AM
Well i am not the judge for you to be accepted as a merit source, but i think there are some that i can comment about, such as :
1. Some of your suggestion post is only a compilation of other thread.
2. No 5 is only a copy pasted post with some reference link to the original post in the bottom of it.
So thats it. The length of the post doesnt ensure the quality of the post. If the search function is great i think a post which compile other thread will be considered as a normal post, but too bad i can find an exact match when i try the search feature, or did i do something wrong?

But i wish you a good luck, hope you can be accepted, so you can help more people in the future and make use of your position in a good manner.

My #5 post is actually an article that was submitted by the DMD Foundation, and both the original poster and the guy who quoted the post are very involved in the project and likely both worked on the article, so in that case it didn't really matter that I merited a quote of a post. Just a bit of insider information for you Smiley

Compilations can be very helpful especially for those who would rather not comb through an entire thread for useful information Smiley

I appreciate the support, and we'll see what happens. I'll enjoy giving out s-merit as a source but I'll be OK with out it too Smiley

I submitted the application for NLEXCH today by email.
You can email NLEXCH support at info@nlexch.com and include your NLEXCH account information to let them know you want Devcoin listed.
It might help influence their decision

CTYA

Thanks for getting on it so quickly. I will email them as well and request that DVC get added.

Speaking of the Wild West of ICOs, I posted some questions I have about the Worbli ICO (the example I posted about here earlier). My comment got downvoted by Worbli. I don't want to read too much into it, but it seems to send the message that due diligence type of questions are not welcome. In the Steemit culture, downvoting is fairly rare so when it happens it stands out.

If I ran a project like that I would never want to do anything that could be interpreted as unwelcoming of due diligence. That just seems crazy.

I'm not offended by the downvote or anything. I just find it interesting...
310  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: WHAT IS HAPPENING TO MERITS? on: May 11, 2018, 11:59:42 PM
That's interesting that you are tracking s-merit. Who (generally speaking) is receiving it? Does it go primarily to already established members who would likely be very knowledgeable? Or is it going to new members who are showing a capacity to make intelligent posts?

I suppose there will always be those trying to game the system. I guess the best you can do is make it as hard (or better yet, harder) to game the system as it would be to just treat it honestly.

I think one issue is that s-merit is a new addition and I'm not sure the established members have really caught on to how important it is for new members on this forum. It's not like with Steemit where curating content was a part of it from the beginning.

Generally, when one needs points that can only be awarded by other members, then what one needs to do is market and promote oneself in the hopes of being noticed, and possibly flat out beg for merit points. You may write amazing posts, but that's not enough. Those posts would have to be noticed by the right people (those with s-merit to award) as well.

Of course the problem with just anyone having s-merit to award is that they might try to sell it in some way and just award it to those willing to pay for it. I assume that in the merit source application process you would have to agree at some point that you won't do that. And then what would happen if the merit sources become known and become the recipient of tons of PMs begging them to read posts?

I honestly don't know enough about how it's really working to be able to tell if it's helping. I do know that if you join the forum and do honest to goodness networking, forum rank isn't going to matter much. Really, the people I see asking about it or complaining about it seem to be here for only one reason: to make money through signature campaigns. It's helpful to weed them out, so it may be that the system is working perfectly, just not quite in the way initially intended.

The amount of smerit that is being awarded decreases each week, although these past few weeks it is kind of stabilising in the 4500-5500 range. I normally track it each week, but I’ve given it a skip this week. The question really is if that quantity is enough to sustain the faith in the system.

Besides, I’m not sure that the spamming is really decreasing too much. If people start to lose faith in the merit system the may either quit posting altogether, or post with total disrespect for merit knowing that their rank will never be a high one.

Account farmers will try various tricks to prosper, but we may see a herd of farms being created with low level ranks to make up for the loss of chance to reach higher level ranks. By this I mean that spam posting may not be reduced that much or even at all, while users that try to contribute may be discouraged by the lack of smerit overall.

311  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: WHAT IS HAPPENING TO MERITS? on: May 11, 2018, 02:47:58 PM
Oh, people are still complaining about Merit system?
I can agree that now it's more difficult to rank up, but who said that it should be easy? Some people are buying Merits, but they are risking to get red trust rating, also I suspect that it would be every expensive to buy enough Merits to reach high rank. And these who are selling their sMerit sooner or later will run out of it.
I noticed that amounts of Merit that people are sending are getting smaller. It's most likely that they spent all their sMerit that their had. Maybe others are just become lazy to spend their sMerit.
And another thing - I saw stats somewhere that huge number of forum users still haven't sent any of their sMerit, I don't know, maybe they are still not aware about Merit system. If people would use their sMerit more actively we would see less people complaining that's too difficult to get Merit.
Merit system isn't perfect, but it's one of the best thing happened to Bitcointalk in recent years. It can be improved somehow, but I don't have ideas how.

I think the way to make it better is to carefully screen some people to be merit sources. There is an application process but from what I understand it's not being vigilantly attended to. The thing is some people, including many longtime members who have s-merit, are really here to network, etc., and they don't even think of awarding merit because they don't see it as important, or maybe don't even know about it. But there are people who would love to award it but they only have a limited amount. So... the solution is to give trusted members a renewing source of merit. That way those who want to curate can, and those who aren't going to get involved in curating no matter how much s-merit they have, aren't going to be hurting anyone.
312  Other / Meta / Re: wiser's application to be a merit source on: May 11, 2018, 02:06:20 PM
Thanks for your support. I don't mind waiting a long time to get accepted, but it would be nice to get some sort of confirmation response just letting me know what to expect.

It's not a huge deal to me, but you are correct. I do enjoy helping new people with education and a boost whenever I can.

Part of the issue with merit is that those of us who can give it out tend not to because it's not a habit we're in. I've been giving some out, but I will run out eventually as it's not like my buddies here are meriting me all that much--again, because not in the habit.

I haven't gotten any response and I even messaged theymos to point him to this thread. It's possible that they already have all the merit sources they need for now.

You may be waiting a while,  Loycev's application was submitted January 30th and hasn't had a response. I'm not sure if anyone who applied to be a source became one or if there is any information on rejected/pending sources.

You may be correct that theymos figures there are enough, I'm guessing the idea would be to slowly introduce sources so the supply isn't flooded.

I had some time to check out your recent history and it looks like you have a few places you like to post but that you also return to the Beginners and Help section to help folks and have spread a decent amount of Merit there. They also look like posts that were deserving of Merit.

Good luck with your application

i am a beginner and on my way to become jr member, so i could join some bounties, but my friend told me a bad news that makes me down...he said to join bounty, we have to have merit, and more difficult to earn some btc recently....what should i do to get merit ?

You need to have a reason for being here that goes beyond wanting to make money on bounties. If your only reason to be here is to get in on bounties, then I have bad news for you.

I tried to do a few routine things on Steemit this morning and it's not working. For a while I couldn't log in. Steemconnect is freezing. At the moment I'm trying to power down and that's not working. Anyone else having issues?

I've found Steemit to work well most of the time, but it will have these unpredictable and weird partial outages where some aspect doesn't work right. Also, for tax purposes, keeping track of transactions on the Steem block chain is a major pain. I'm actually working on getting out of Steem for those reasons, and into something else that will be easier to work with. That's what you have to deal with when you have limited time.

I guess my power down attempt finally went through...

316  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Would you support an Israeli ICO? on: May 11, 2018, 04:44:33 AM
I don't have anything against Israel, so I would invest in a legitimate Israeli company if it fit into my financial goals. It's ICOs I have a lot of hesitations about. The vast majority of them end up never really going anywhere, which means a loss of investor funds. There are, of course, the scams, but there are also those initiatives started by people who mean well and truly intend to deliver, but they lack skills or resources to make it happen. I wrote an article analyzing one particular ICO, but they're pretty much all the same: https://steemit.com/ico/@wiser/a-critical-look-at-an-ico-whitepaper

There's a lot of great advice here. Don't be in too much of a hurry to earn. Learn first. I'd recommend you spend some quality time on DNotesEDU.com It's a financial and cryptocurrency education site with a wealth of knowledge presented in a way that makes sense.
318  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: WHAT IS HAPPENING TO MERITS? on: May 11, 2018, 12:35:11 AM
I completely recognize that the merit system has made it more difficult to rank up in this forum. My account was grandfathered in as I've been around for a while and got my rank back when posts and activity were the only criteria. So, when it comes to what shows up on your profile in this particular forum, you newbies have it more difficult.

With that said, keep in mind that this forum is primarily a place where you can learn about cryptocurrencies in general, and also specific projects. For example, if you read some news article about a particular alt coin and you're interested in learning more, you can find its main thread on this forum. It's helpfully linked to on its page on CoinMarketcap.com This forum is also a place to network. You connect with people based on common interests and if you have skills you might put them to work in service of a project you want to support, either as a volunteer or paid contractor.

Once you get involved in a subcommunity here, once you start to get to know people and work with people, honestly no one cares about your rank, so don't worry about it. The only time it really comes into play is with signature campaigns as higher ranking members have more options. But as far as contributing meaningfully to a project or coin's development, your rank here will not limit you at all, so don't worry about it.

The reason most of us old timers who actually have spendable merit don't use it more often is because for the most part we don't care, so we don't think of it. I don't judge you by your forum rank.

I imagine you came here with the goal of getting more involved in the cryptocurrency industry. Then you saw the ranking system and perhaps you got a little sidetracked? Remember your original goal and stick to it.
319  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Should you trust crypto "influencers?" on: May 11, 2018, 12:21:23 AM
What do you mean by influencers? If you mean by that is about manipulators, no you should never, because there are too many and situation may always does not support them, so you can follow.

Unfortunately, often the market manipulators come across to the general public as consultants who just happen to be very good at trading. It's not like they put "Market Manipulator" or "Pump and Dumper" on their Twitter profiles. But some of them have been caught red handed using their subscriber base as fodder for their manipulation schemes. In some cases, their subscribers have been paid subscribers, which makes that abuse all the more blatant.

If you follow an influencer and they start promoting a coin, ask why before you buy.
320  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NEM (XEM) Official Thread - 100% New Code - Easy To Use APIs on: May 11, 2018, 12:17:07 AM
BTC hit $20K at the end of last year so it's certainly possible. I would take these predictions with a grain of salt. It is likely that more people will be getting involved in cryptocurrencies, but there's no guarantee it will be BTC. BTC is actually clunky and hard to use in comparison to other coins out there. The key for NEM or any coin is to figure out what it's going to take for the uninitiated to start using your coin, and then deliver. Whichever project manages to do that first will be sitting mighty pretty.

It's all about what gives a coin value. BTC's value isn't derived from it being easy to use. It is derived from its censorship resistant transfer of value and huge developer community working on the core protocols. The trick is to figure this out for NEM and push that forward.

I believe all the block chain projects are censorship resistant by virtue of the immutability of the block chain and the fact that it's stored on multiple computers, so that is not unique to BTC. But the huge developer community working on value added infrastructure is a very good point, and for now BTC definitely has the edge. I think NEM could be a contender once they have Catapult working for enterprises on more than a pilot basis.
