Cryptsy finally posts a meaningful update. Unfortunately it's not good news. Yes, money was stolen (so it wasn't just "technical difficulties"); one option is filing for bankruptcy. They are hoping they might be able to recover the lost funds (apparently they are sitting in a wallet and haven't moved since the theft), but it's a long shot. Trading and withdrawals suspended indefinitely, although it looks like some markets are active. Also, not sure if it's just BTC and LTC withdrawals they are suspending or all of them.

I've been working with the devtome admin (jasinlee) since around xmas on getting devtome going again. The hosting was upgraded a couple of months previously as we were getting much more traffic so looks like some settings - e.g. mod security - messed things up.

Basically involves me trying edits and passing on errors with screenshots and timestamps, them changing some rules every time. Time differences are making it a slow process with one or two changes a day.

Now at the stage of involvement from hosting in trying to replicate issues as nothing technically wrong with site itself (edits by me under 'Recent Changes' includes hosts working on it with my login). There's been some improvement as can now add a limited number of characters rather than none. Hopefully they'll be able to narrow down the exact problem soon.

I've been reluctant to update because until resolved it isn't, but appreciate everyone's frustrated - so for information.

This sounds like great news! Please do post updates, even if it doesn't seem like there is much to say, even if it's only "we continue to work on the issues." Updates of little or no progress are still better than no updates at all (Cryptsy, anyone?).

Looks like some good news: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=233997.msg13554248#msg13554248

But does require patience.

In the long run, probably best to see how this plays out... as long as we know it's being worked on.

I think that the best solution to improve the security wallet is the introduction of multi signature.
When one part of the  key will work to unlock the wallet and use of POS mining, but both sides of the signature will only be used for outgoing transactions.
and of course Dev can add a PIN code to dial in the wallet via the mouse.
This may also raise safety DMD wallet..

I'm all for adding that kind of security as long as I can figure out how to use it Smiley I'm actually more worried about locking myself out than someone else hacking my wallet.

Again, we are locked out of devtome and Devcoin's pay sheet for several months.  I understand the technical fixes are straight forward, but without access...welp, it is a shame!

My post from last week was speaking in a "what now?" mindset, under the assumption that everyone would agree that the project was 100% dead.

Sorry, I did not mean to disrupt the discussion and will now fall away.

If you're interested in helping out with the Devtome rescue project, please refer to this thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1317408.0

That would need to happen first, before ideas for making fundamental changes to the system get kicked around.

The project isn't 100% dead yet, more like in a deep sleep and needing to be woken up, or to quote/paraphrase from The Princess Bride, "It's not dead, just *mostly* dead! There's a big difference between all the way dead and mostly dead." Smiley

My wallet still won't work. Is that problem getting worked on?

Yes, I am still looking into this and will reply to your email shortly. It does look to be a windows dependency conflict.

neurocis.

Thanks Smiley

Just wondering, would copying and pasting in passwords or wallet passphrases mitigate the issue with having a keylogger malware on your computer? Just wondering because I keep all my passwords in lastpass or on encrypted flash drives, and just copy/paste them when I need them. I have one computer that gets used for everything. I'd hate to have my coins stolen out from under me.

I mentioned moderator positions in my Jan 8th post because oversight would be essential.  But I don't think you can create profitable content just through quality control measures.  You have to start with appealing subject matter, then go from there.

I apologize if my comments disparaged anyone's past efforts because that was not my intention.  My comments were about what might be done differently if the concept was to be rebooted under new management in light of how everyone is currently locked out.

The system we had was a good one, and came about as the result of much discussion and lots of ideas kicked around. Part of the original philosophy of the Devtome was to allow (and reward) people to create whatever content they wanted to, provided it met some minimum standard of quality. There were admins there who actively checked for plagiarism and plain bad writing. The rating system was just one measure.

The problem now is that the system is not currently being maintained, not that there were problems with the system when it was in good working order. And even if there are ways to improve on the system, the first priority is to get it back into good working order as is.

I learned from a successful stock market investor that it's always wise to "take some money off the table" when an investment rises in value. You want to take profits from time to time, and not hold out everything for the hope of even more future gain. So it sounds like raginglikeaboss made a good decision based on when he initially invested. I came on board much later, and I hope at some point to cash out a portion of my DMD at profit, but to also keep some for future growth. Two things DMD has going for it are the cloud mining payouts and the minting rewards. This means that if the price of DMD (relative to BTC/USD) never changed, profits could be made from selling off minting rewards and/or additional cloud mining rewards. Basically, this particular "investment" pays out a dividend which could be either reinvested or sold off. So a DMD holder has more to hold out for than simply speculating on the actual price of DMD. That's what I personally like about this particular venture, but I realize not every investor has the same basic values that I do.

a for-profit community website where anonymous contributors could get paid in cryptocoins

good enough of a directive, so "for-profit" is the key?

still need a rough list of content (for guidance)
and why not key projects listed (maybe already done just unaware)

Yeah, I would say the site needs to be self-sustaining. Basically, earning enough advertising revenue so it can pay the contributors and other workers.

The "post whatever you want" approach of devtome sounded good in theory, but to be profitable a website probably needs to focus on stuff that visitors actually want to read.

Off hand, maybe erotica or fan fiction?  Maybe original short fiction (4000-8000 words) by specific genre or niche blogging?  Honestly, a lot of ideas would work but it has to be legit content and not just posting up text for the sake of a word count.

You're not going to solve the problem of writers "just posting up text for the sake of a word count" by just picking a more specific theme for the Devtome. Here's how we dealt with this issue in the past. The Devtome has (or did have) quality control admins who evaluate content for quality. We had a writer rating system and that score would impact the writer share count. I was one of the raters. We looked for things like basic correct spelling/grammar, understandable writing, basic formatting (such as was there a title?). If a piece of writing was especially bad, I would send a link to one of the quality control admins and see what they wanted to do. A lot of bad content got removed from the Devtome during that time. My point is that particular issue was addressed in the past and worked well as long as the admins did their jobs and the Devtome had basic functionality. The raters were paid a certain number of shares (I think it was up to five) per round, but those shares only got paid out if we completed our rating page (and it had to include a certain number of comments beyond our score). At some point I quit receiving rating pages to complete and I assumed it was because I went a few months without posting any new writer content, but when I finally asked about it it turned out that the rating of writers program had just gotten dropped.

There are rumors that they have invested a lot of money in Paycoin and suffered huge losses at this coin.
https://99bitcoins.com/federal-investigations-of-cryptsy-underway/
All this says only that it is not buy the coins that have premine and marked with labels ** on the site http://coinmarketcap.com

In any case, their position is now very bad..

Their behavior certainly lends credence to the "something to hide" theory. I remember when that Coinfire article came out, and Cryptsy denied they were under any kind of Federal investigation whatsoever. I don't know what that denial is worth, though. Getting into trouble with the GAW Miners scam does seem plausible. Lots of people got hoodwinked by that one.

If they are truly in trouble with the law (or think they might be soon) it would make sense to burn themselves out (and make deliberately poor business decisions)--so there isn't much left to confiscate.

I do keep dealing with them from time to time, but I limit it to small amounts. That way if they go down I won't lose too much.

What has been going on at Cryptsy is quite unfortunate. It is hard enough to build a successful business. Letting it go down through neglect, after being quite successful for a while,  is hard to understand.

You'd think they were *trying* to self destruct.

Hey cryptonit, thanks for bringing cloudmining website back online!
Just one thing, I think it's not good to advertise the current DMD/BTC prices from cryptsy, because they are not the real market conditions. This could lead people to sell on cryptsy and maybe even lose DMD or BTC in the end.

agree we will change in the next few days the source of BTC and DMD prices
most likely towards coinmarketcap so we have a average of multiple exchanges

Great idea about using an average exchange rate.

I'm not sure what's up with Cryptsy. There are some coins you can still get out. The way they are NOT communicating with their customers about their issues and doing weird stuff without really explaining why, it's almost like they are *trying* to self destruct.

For your information: I was able to withdraw DMD from Cryptsy, just bought my first DMDs

Did you buy them on Cryptsy?
1157  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Re: [DVC] Let's rescue devtome.com! on: January 06, 2016, 06:45:25 PM
That is it, I want to start the rescue of devtome.com.

A little background about me, I'm proud member of devcoin community, being granted several ongoing shares for my contributions and assignments (Devcoin Share List, Marketing, Investor Administrator, Node Maintenance). I'm really frustrated because my assignment of "Investor Administrator" is currently blocked, since people running devtome.com is not responding, that makes impossible to deploy my code. Also, I like to contribute to the wiki but current annoying bugs make it really hard.

Ok, this is the plan:

1. Diagnose current situation
2. Propose solutions (only what you can actually do, don't expect help from people running devtome.com)
3. Fix this mess
4. Celebrate!

My previous post: "[DVC] What happened to Devcoin leadership!" (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1288592), demonstrates that people running devtome.com "just have no interest in keeping them ticking, and don't respond when you try to get them to do their job." as Hunterbunter said already (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=233997.msg13277774#msg13277774)

First things first, we need to diagnose current situation of Devtome.com, please share your thoughts.

Let's make it happen!

If there's something I can help with, let me know. I don't do code, though, just writing. I maintain a copy of each month's receiver file, and I supposedly sign up new writers but no one's contacted me to join for months. I also try to write, though lately haven't been able to do that.

OK, adding this thread to my watch list.

The list of businesses accepting Devcoin got a review: http://www.devtome.com/doku.php?id=where_to_spend_your_devcoins

Several of them are not operating anymore, so got moved under the "Not available" section.

If you know of any other business accepting Devcoin please add that info to the wiki.

Right now there is a problem with adding to the wiki. A number of us have been getting an error message whenever we try to save changes to any pages of the Devtome, including our own. I have not gotten any updates that this problem has been resolved yet.
