321  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: How can I see all fees paid on the last block on: January 13, 2018, 06:18:15 PM
OP, I run a chat bot on a website and one of the things it can do is list some basic statistics about the mempool and fee data. I do this by connecting to my local full node over RPC and using Bitcoin Core's getRawMemPool command. I sort the transactions from highest to lowest fee per byte, and then find the last transaction that would fit in a 1 MB block. The fee rate of that transaction is a reasonable estimate of the lowest fee you could pay and still get your transaction confirmed in the next block.

There's a few caveats, such that I don't account for the segwit discount, and that any new transactions with higher fees than that would raise that estimate, so I generally pay a few dozen more sat/byte than whatever that tool reports.

Just one method you can use to calculate that kind of data.
322  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Why are Bitcoin core peers on ports other than 8333? on: January 13, 2018, 06:14:19 PM
To give some more background on this, I run a full node but I route my traffic through a VPN. This VPN allows me to forward ports, but not specific ports, so I'm just given a random port number that I can use to be connectable from the outside Internet. This is the port I run my full node off of, so it's not standard but it's how I get it to be reachable.

Just another reason you might see someone using a non-standard port.
323  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: BITCOIN TRANSACTION UNCONFIRMED FOR THREE WEEKS on: January 13, 2018, 06:12:11 PM
This transaction was sent with a very low miner fee. If you don't have the address you sent it from for whatever reason, your only option is being able to perform a CPFP, which is only possible if you have control of the receiving address.
324  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger nano S doesn't work read before you buy on: January 13, 2018, 06:10:44 PM
Well, I find this topic very helpful and enlighting because I am starting to doubt it's efficiency. I haven't bought one yet because I have done my research and some are complaining but also I have read good comments such as its the best hard wallet and easy to use. Maybe it's better to see it for myself. I try to contact the main supplier too. I am a bit scared about getting fake ones.

I would definitely buy from the main website.

the fact that it doesnt work with all micro usb cables is a bit of a pain in the ass. in fact, why not just make it like a thumb drive?

Where are you getting this? It should work with all micro usb cables. Are you accidentally using a "power" usb cable, one that has the data pins disconnected? You can get those sometimes with cables that come with chargers. The Nano S comes with it's own cable anyways.

I believe the reason it doesn't have a male USB connector on the device itself is that it would make it very difficult to press the buttons and read the screen on many computers/devices when it was plugged in.
325  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Best coin to mine on smartphone on: January 13, 2018, 07:31:19 AM
To mine with your phone, you'll need to have it plugged in because of the crazy battery drain. Because you have it plugged in, you will easily generate enough heat over an extended period of time to strain/cause damage to the battery. You're looking at much more in expenses for a damaged battery/phone than you are in mining profits.

It's not worth it.
326  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Blockchain Validation error-24 mempool conflict[solution] on: January 13, 2018, 12:38:07 AM
A mempool conflict generally means that a transaction has already been made spending the same coins you're trying to spend currently. Did you try to send a transaction previously?
327  Economy / Gambling / Re: 🔶 YOLOdice.com 🔶 FAST play/invest, LTC is coming! on: January 13, 2018, 12:34:32 AM
Good to know that everything will be separate as some were saying they would be interchangeable within the site.
Which I can not see that happening, as that would require a total over haul on the wallet of bitcoin's side with the amount of work you and scott have put in so far, I could not see that happening.
Also before the Jan 15th launch date of litecoin,
can you say how much the withdrawal fees would cost to send off the ltc casino wallet?

Thanks.

While of course I can't speak for Ethan, I would be very surprised if they weren't small. LTC's average transaction fee currently seems to be less than $0.30 USD.
328  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [ANN] WalletZ - The All in One Coin Balance Viewer on: January 11, 2018, 11:08:11 PM
Would you consider open sourcing it? I'm not a huge fan of running executables posted on this forum.
329  Economy / Gambling / Re: 🔶 YOLOdice.com 🔶 FAST play/invest, maximum transparency, join us! on: January 11, 2018, 10:59:51 PM
LTC will be added on 15th January

Good news everyone! We are adding Litecoin to YOLOdice this Monday. We'll take YD off-line for an hour or so, it will come back with support for LTC. You will be able to deposit, withdraw, play, send tips, claim rakeback, claim referral bonuses and get faucet in LTC in addition to BTC!

I know a lot of you have been waiting for LTC to be added, so I am glad it's so close now. Hopefully the small transaction fees and fast confirmations are also something worth waiting for!

There will also be a special competition on to give LTC a kick-start, stay tuned!

After that we'll be working on adding other coins too - if you have any suggestions, let us know!

I will keep you informed!
Ethan

Will the faucet be separate of the Bitcoin faucet? (Can I claim the LTC faucet if I have BTC invested)?
330  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: ViaBTC closing cloud mining contract Market on: January 11, 2018, 10:58:48 PM
This is why you don't buy "lifetime cloud mining contracts". Because shit happens. There are plenty of people in this forum advocating against cloud mining, nobody should be unaware of the risks.
331  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger nano S doesn't work read before you buy on: January 11, 2018, 10:57:03 PM
Double check and see if you have "browser support" turned off in the wallet settings. It needs to be off for you to use the official chrome apps.

333  Economy / Gambling / Re: bustadice – Next Generation Dice (Ƀ 20 max profit & 10 bit faucet) on: January 08, 2018, 11:55:00 PM
Will this site allow for any other types of coins to be available to deposit and then withdraw from using that same coin?
What is the withdrawal fee after lightening network is implemented, eventually as you do not have an eta on this like all other sites have encountered the same issues as you have:
Not knowing exactly when it will be out of testnet phase and ready to use. Lips sealed

Lightning network nodes are allowed to charge fees to route payments through the network, however they are nothing remotely near current Bitcoin network fees. LN fees are in the single digit satoshis, by my experience on the testnet. This may not be indicative of how it will work on the mainnet but they will be very, very small.
334  Economy / Gambling / Re: bustadice – Next Generation Dice (Ƀ 20 max profit & 10 bit faucet) on: January 08, 2018, 10:35:15 PM
devans & RHavar,

What are your thoughts on implementing Lightning Network support? I've been using it on the testnet and although I'm not using a wallet interface yet (I'm interacting directly with lnd on top of roasbeef's btcd) I've already fallen in love with it. If you want to test an implementation of it on testnet or mainnet, I'd love to help, just reach out to me here or however else.

I've been playing with it and am very optimistic. However, I'm not entirely sure it's stable or safe enough to want to integrate directly yet. However, I was thinking it might make a lot of sense to make lightning support as a 3rd party bot.

e.g. you PM lightning bot, and it gives you an invoice. You pay the invoice, and then lightning bot tips you.

And same thing in reverse for lightning withdrawals. This seems like a really low (and bounded) risk way of testing out lightning for actual production use

I've been thinking about the same thing for another site, but have run into problems about trust. However, since lightning payments are usually small, in addition to the instant nature of the payments, I think I will still attempt it.
335  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Poor support on exchanges on: January 08, 2018, 06:14:18 PM
Is there any exchange which have good support? Im freaking out on those shitty exchanges which needs months to answer of fucking question. Bittrex was one of better exchanges out there, but im waiting 20 days to answer me on support ticket. Is that normal? I wish all those lame exchanges to shut off. They take so much money every second every day, and they still dont have proper support, and what poor support means? It means they dont give a fuck about their customers, they only think about money. Becouse i didnt saw on any exchange that taking money doesnt work. They took their fees perfectly, no single problem with it. Liqui too, i cant login on their exchange, and they dont answer for days too. In this volaite crypto world even 1 minute can be important, and they dont answer for days or weeks. How the fuck is that possible?

Many of these exchanges simply cannot handle the sheer volume they are experiencing. The past few months have seen record numbers of users, and most exchanges are staffed by a small number of people busy trying to upgrade their infrastructure to handle the number of people. By doing this they solve future problems but at the same time it takes away from their ability to answer support tickets for current users.

Your frustrations are understandable and I'm in no way defending any of these exchanges, but I think it helps to understand both sides of the situation.

337  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Time to move from Electrum on: January 08, 2018, 05:57:25 PM
Electrum is still one of my favorite wallets, but you have to understand its limitations:

 - Its privacy (and security, to some degree) is inherently bad due to its verification model.
 - It's written in an interpreted language, which makes me instantly suspicious of its security.
 - It has a very small team.

I'm OK with using Electrum for smallish amounts, with the assumption that all transactions/BTC in a single Electrum wallet can be trivially linked to each other.

IMO Electrum is still in the top two or three wallets. But although ThomasV is one of the best devs in Bitcoin, and some other wallet devs are also very good, this probably says more about how poor the wallet ecosystem is in general than how great Electrum is. Every wallet is seriously flawed in many ways.

Agreed. Just look at Meltdown, it has been a vulnerability in Intel chips for years, and was only now discovered. The two aren't completely analogous, but a mistake/vulnerability free environment isn't likely when you still have humans writing the code.
338  Economy / Gambling / Re: 🔶 YOLOdice.com 🔶 FAST play/invest, maximum transparency, join us! on: January 08, 2018, 05:54:53 PM
I am not too worried about this. Since they said they were putting out a patch for all windows machines from Microsoft to quell any doubts about what is safe and which are not.

I received an update last night and it installed and I am certain that my machine is protected.

Is there a drop in performance after the update? They say there is a 30% drop once the update is installed, it is the primary reason why I am reluctant to do it on my already slow laptop which is running Windows 7.

Maybe Intel should recall all defective CPUs and replace them with a new one.

Since all Intel CPUs made since the Pentium I believe are all affected, that's highly unlikely. The performance hit is on syscalls (file system read/writes, things like that), so the performance hit will be different for certain applications based on how the application operates.

Hi ethan_nx. I heard that Yolodice has Segwit enabled and I would like to know what your thoughts and experiences are in setting it up. I also want to ask how much in fees do you or your users pay when they withdraw from your site and how much cheaper are they compared to legacy transactions?

Nitrogen's solution to the problem is charging their users with $20 per withdrawal which is laughable. As one of the biggest gambling sites, they should be leading Segwit adoption in the community.

Segwit helps a bit, but only "a bit". I cannot remember the exact calculation of transaction weight for segwit/non-segwit transaction, but using Segwit addresses in our wallet help us save ~ 30% in fees. In fact it's less than nothing, because the fact that the blocks are full and network fees are skyrocketing increases fees by 1000% for everyone for most of the time.

So YES: Segwit slightly helps us solve the problem that is the result of lack of scaling.
And NO: Segwit alone does NOT fix Bitcoin scaling issues and high fees.

Contrary to the common belief, Segwit solves nothing right now. It helps mitigate high fees in certain situations. Even if every transaction right now was a Segwit transaction, it would not solve the scaling problem.

Ethan

Cheers,
Ethan
Everything but the signatures are counted as normal (1 byte = 1 weight unit) and signatures are counted at 1/4 (4 bytes of signature = 1 weight unit)
From what I remember as you said on the chat last evening that you were working on the lightening network for the site.
Now I know you do programming for the AM bot on the site.
So is this correct you are also working on this network for faster transactions to the site?

I only meant I was planning on showing some statistics about the lightning network currently running on Bitcoin testnet3. Ethan, LN isn't as far off as you might think it is Wink
