Whoever owns your account email owns your account. So you should be careful about using non-existent webmail accounts, mailinator-type sites, etc.
3302  Other / Meta / Re: whiskers75 Hacked on: November 01, 2013, 03:50:38 AM
OK, have him send me (signed) the email address I should use for the account. He can then use the forgotten password feature.
3303  Other / Meta / Re: Youtube videos~is there a way to embed them on posts? on: October 31, 2013, 10:03:17 PM
Embedding SWFs would be amazing.  Cheesy

Amazingly annoying and insecure.
3304  Other / Meta / Re: whiskers75 Hacked on: October 31, 2013, 09:37:58 PM
Have him sign a message with 1whiskrpGeZVd5ormX2ihifc9uB2YSz82 or some other address associated with the account.
3305  Other / Meta / Re: Forum avatar? on: October 30, 2013, 12:50:20 PM
If anyone really wants their avatar removed, PM me. I won't upload new avatars, though.
3306  Other / Meta / Re: Tysat is misusing the trust system on: October 30, 2013, 08:09:46 AM
That sort of usage is allowed. Trust ratings aren't moderated.
3307  Economy / Auctions / Advertise on this forum - Round 101 on: October 29, 2013, 11:50:52 PM
In order to collect more money for the creation of good forum software and for other useful purposes, the forum is selling ad space in the area beneath the first post of every topic page.

Ads are allowed to contain any non-annoying HTML/CSS style. No images, JavaScript, or animation (no marquee or blinking). Ads must appear 3 or fewer lines tall in my browser. Ads will be prefixed with "Advertisement:". Ad text may not contain lies, misrepresentation, or inappropriate language. Ads may not link directly to any NSFW page. Ads may be rejected for other reasons.

There are 10 total ad slots which are randomly rotated. So one ad slot has a one in ten chance of appearing. Seven of the slots are for sale here. Ads appear only on topic pages with more than one post, and only for people using the default theme.

The ad lasts at least 7 days starting from when I put it up. (However, if you look at the ad history you'll see that ads frequently get 1-2 extra days, but this is random and definitely not guaranteed.)

Ad blocking

Hero members, Donators, VIPs, and moderators have the ability to disable ads. I don't expect many people to use this option. These people don't increase the impression counts for your ads.

I try to bypass Adblock Plus filters as much as possible, though this is not guaranteed. It is difficult or impossible for ABP filters to block the ad space itself without blocking posts. However, filters can match against the URLs in your links, your CSS classes and style attributes, and the HTML structure of your ads.

To prevent matches against URLs: I have some JavaScript which fixes links blocked by ABP. You must tell me if you want this for your ads. When someone with ABP and JavaScript enabled views your ads, your links are changed to a special randomized bitcointalk.org URL which redirects to your site when visited. People without ABP are unaffected, even if they don't have JavaScript enabled. The downsides are:
- ABP users will see the redirection link when they hover over the link, even if they disable ABP for the forum.
- Getting referral stats might become even more difficult.
- Some users might get a warning when redirecting from https to http.

To prevent matching on CSS classes/styles: Don't use inline CSS. I can give your ad a CSS class that is randomized on each pageload, but you must request this.

To prevent matching against your HTML structure: Use only one <a> and no other tags if possible. If your ads get blocked because of matching done on something inside of your ad, you are responsible for noticing this and giving me new ad HTML.

Auction rules

Post your bids in this thread. Prices must be stated in BTC per slot. You must state the max number of slots you want. When the auction ends, the highest bidders will have their slots filled until all seven slots are filled.

So if someone bids for 7 slots @ 5 BTC and this is the highest bid, then he'll get all 7 slots. If the two highest bids are 7 slots @ 4 BTC and 1 slot @ 5 BTC, then the first person will get 6 slots and the second person will get 1 slot.

The notation "2 @ 5" means 2 slots for 5 BTC each. Not 2 slots for 5 BTC total.

- When you post a bid, the bids in your previous posts are considered to be automatically canceled. You can put multiple bids in one post, however.
- All bid prices must be evenly divisible by 0.25.
- The bidding starts at 0.50.
- I will end the auction at an arbitrary time no more than 12 days from now. (I will probably end the auction 1-3 days before the ads are scheduled to go up.)
- If two people bid at the same price, the person who bid first will have his slots filled first.
- Bids are considered invalid and will be ignored if they do not specify both a price and a max quantity, or if they could not possibly win any slots

If these rules are confusing, look at some of the past forum ad auctions to see how it's done. I also post periodic status updates which should help make things clear.

You must pay for your slots within 24 hours of receiving the payment address. Otherwise your slots may be sold to someone else.
3308  Economy / Auctions / Re: Advertise on this forum - Round 100 (quick) on: October 29, 2013, 11:45:32 PM

3309  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Bitcoind accounts best practices on: October 29, 2013, 09:59:29 PM
If you can use accounts, I recommend doing so. They encourage you to use best practices, and there are few reasons not to use them.

Quote
The accounts code does not scale up to thousands of accounts with tens of thousands of transactions, because by-account (and by-account-by-time) indices are not implemented. So many operations (like computing an account balance) require accessing every wallet transaction.

bitcoind scans the wallet transactions for any kind of balance lookup. getbalance <account> only scans the wallet once per account, whereas manually tracking addresses with getreceivedbyaddress causes bitcoind to scan the wallet once per address. So using accounts may be faster in some cases. Accounts may accumulate many old/unused addresses over time, which can slow things down, but you can do things to prevent/fix this if it becomes an issue.

If accounts are far too slow, raw addresses will probably also be too slow. You'll need to use caching or raw transactions in this case. But both of these things are difficult to do safely (maybe deceptively so for caching), so it's best to start out with accounts and only change things when you need to.
3310  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: SCAM - Donation to Forums on: October 28, 2013, 04:21:51 AM
The forum has over 6000 BTC. I will never send out emails asking for donations.
3311  Other / Off-topic / Re: /r/Bitcoin stats on: October 27, 2013, 06:46:37 PM
Yes, but you can download stats directly from Reddit now:
http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/about/traffic.json

So I don't think that I will re-enable that script.
3312  Economy / Auctions / Re: Advertise on this forum - Round 100 (quick) on: October 27, 2013, 05:21:52 PM
This auction will end in 24-80 hours.

I'd hoped to do something very special for round 100, but I don't have time. I'll do it for round 104 (2 years) instead.

3314  Other / Meta / Re: Posts deleted on: October 27, 2013, 09:09:05 AM
Maybe try the browser back button (i.e. previous web page) when this happens. This should take you back to the post editor with all your words intact.  It works for me when I have successfully submitted a post, so I guess it should also work for unsuccessful posts too.

That doesn't work in some browsers for HTTPS sites, unfortunately.
3315  Other / Meta / Re: Forum account hacked on: October 26, 2013, 11:51:13 PM
You need to prove that you own the account.
3316  Other / Meta / Re: Registration disabled temporarily on: October 26, 2013, 06:13:02 AM
Enabled again.
3317  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Nefario on: October 25, 2013, 01:09:17 PM
really? Theymos has the coins that Nefario owes me still?

No, Nefario has all of the user deposits. And the money I hold is nowhere near 5% of user deposits -- it's only ~200 BTC.

Nefario and ColdHardMetal had all of the user funds. If Nefario can't pay people back, it's because he spent or lost some user funds. I have some additional BitcoinGlobal savings that should not be necessary for paying users. If Nefario can reasonably account for the losses so that I know he's not just pocketing the difference, I'm willing to cover the losses from the ~200 BTC of BitcoinGlobal funds that I'm holding.

I can't just pay users back directly. I don't have any information whatsoever about GLBSE deposits.

Nothing has changed, so this money has been sitting in cold storage since then.
3318  Other / Meta / Re: Day bitcointalk.org created?Want to know the history of this wonderful forum on: October 24, 2013, 01:02:18 PM
Satoshi registered bitcoin.org as soon as he came up with the name, but he only set up a simple website. A little later, Sirius took over hosting of the site and set up a forum and a wiki. This is that forum. (The wiki no longer exists.) It was originally located at bitcoin.org/smf, then forum.bitcoin.org, then bitcointalk.org. Someone else can look up the exact dates.
3319  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: Selling a large amount of BTC on: October 23, 2013, 07:30:33 PM
It's going to take a while to find a single buyer for that much BTC. Have you thought about breaking it up into smaller chunks?

Smaller chunks are OK. PM me if you're interested in purchasing any large amount (at least 75 BTC).
3320  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: Selling a large amount of BTC on: October 23, 2013, 12:36:45 PM
This is a personal sale.

The forum is a separate entity. I am not the forum, and I do not own the forum. The forum's money is, except for very recent income, held in public cold storage addresses that you can verify the balance of. Much of the forum's BTC isn't even held by me.
