3661  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Binance Smart Chain Halted Due To Potential Hack on: October 07, 2022, 03:27:03 PM
So Bitcoin is the only blockchain that have more than 99.99% up time?!
Correct, and it is not only applying for blockchain, it's the only network in the world that is up 99.98% of the time for more than 3489 days!
All other shitcoin blockchains are not decentralized and they had a bunch of down times, especially solana is known for this, and people still use them  Roll Eyes
I can't believe that I saw some people in this forum praising CZ and Binance for quickly stopping their blockchain...

So far, I am surprised that the price has not reacted to the news.
Nothing strange when you know that he and his buddies are holding most of the coin supply, and nobody can sell anything when network is not working.
3662  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / PIN codes and Hardware Wallets on: October 07, 2022, 02:55:49 PM
I am starting this topic as an exploration and research about PIN codes and how they work in various hardware wallets.
Not all hardware wallets are made equal, and nor all PIN codes work the same in hardware wallets.

What is PIN code?
- Postal Index Number or PIN code is usually a four to six digit number code, that was first introduced in 1972 by Shriram Bhikaji Velankar for Indian Post.
This year we celebrate 50 years since usage of PIN codes, and today we use them everywhere including in hardware wallets.

In hardware wallets PIN code is used as protection, and entering wrong PIN can create different results for different hardware wallets.
PIN codes can be hacked with right tools and equipment so don't consider them as ultimate protection for your devices.
Some wallets use regular Password instead of PIN, and they can use letters, pattern or biometrics like fingerprints.
Note that some hardware wallets can be bricked and permanently unusable if wrong PIN was entered specific amount of times!

Ledger wallet
Enter an incorrect PIN code 3 times in a row and device will reset after the third incorrect attempt as a security measure.
https://support.ledger.com/hc/en-us/articles/360017582434-Reset-to-factory-settings-?docs=true

Trezor wallet
Trezor hardware wallet will be wiped after entering 16 failed attempts, but delay time was longer each time you enter wrong pin.
https://wiki.trezor.io/Security:Threats

Coldcard wallet
Coldcard permanently bricks itself after entering wrong PIN 13 times!
https://coldcard.com/docs/

Passport wallet
Passport permanently bricks itself after entering wrong PIN 21 times!
The Secure Element includes monotonic counters that enable PIN attempt tracking, where the Secure Element will “brick” itself by no longer permitting login attempts if the maximum number of attempts is exceeded.
https://github.com/Foundation-Devices/passport-firmware/blob/main/SECURITY/SECURITY.md

Keystone wallet
After 12 incorrect attempts using the pattern unlock option, users will be required to unlock their devices with the text password.
After 5 incorrect attempts to unlock your device with the text password option, the device will automatically wipe itself of all data.
If your device is wiped in this way, please be advised that your Keystone can only be restored with the recovery phrase. The system password can also only be reset by entering the recovery phrase.
https://support.keyst.one/basic-features/password

SecuX
If you enter the PIN incorrectly five times, it'll reset the device.
https://secuxtech.com/faq#wallet_device_issues

Ngrave
Ten wrong PIN codes results in the device wiping itself.
https://support.ngrave.io/hc/en-us/articles/4409603287185-The-wallet-doesn-t-recognize-my-fingerprint-how-do-I-access-my-wallet-

Jade
PIN entered wrong 3 times are locked out by the server.

This page is a work in progress.
Feel free to post your suggestions for new hardware wallets, and correct any mistake I accidently made.
3663  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Best Way to Backup Up a Ballet Wallet on: October 07, 2022, 02:23:43 PM
I use a Ballet Wallet I ordered on Amazon.  I trust it based on the historic integrity of the company's founder.  I researched and listened to a couple of his seminars on YouTube.  In addition, I am not aware of anyone who has had a security breach due to the companies manufacturing process.
Just because no breach was ever recorded and published doesn't mean that it never happened or that it won't happen sometime in future.
There are just to many complications and risks in manufacturing process, that I never seriously consider purchasing Ballet wallet.
If you are holding lot of Bitcoin on this wallet you are already making a mistake, and I would suggest sending coins to any other real hardware wallet or cold wallet.

If so, this is not even a hardware wallet in the first place! It only holds a single private key, which you can only view by peeling off the sticker.
I wouldn't trust this for storing any serious money, and it's more like collectible instead of hardware wallet, but it looks cool and it can be used for storing some small pocket money for spending.
3664  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Guides for using Bisq on: October 07, 2022, 02:06:38 PM
I was wondering if there are any tutorials out there for operating Bisq like you would operate an crypto exchange account. Assuming you only want to trade BTC for other stuff. And how to cash out to banks via P2P trades. And also perhaps best practices for advertising your trades, so that the trade reaches as many potential Bisq traders as possible.
You can find almost anything you need related with Bisq exchange on their Wiki page, and they released additional videos on their official Bisq youtube channel.
Starting with new version 2.0 Bisq is going to make major redesign, so we can expect to see major changes in guides and tutorial.
This changes suppose to make navigation and everything in Bisq much easier for newbies, and I already posted some early screenshots before.
If you don't find answers on wiki, you can try asking them on Bisq community channels, official forum, reddit or matricx:

3667  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: PSA: Get your Bitcoin off any exchange supporting "BSV" (due to insolvency risk) on: October 06, 2022, 07:53:05 PM
Of course, since the BSV ecosystem has been engaging in non-stop harassment of Bitcoiners including multibillion dollar lawsuits against Bitcoin developers and non-BSV supporting exchanges it's probably prudent to not to business with exchanges still supporting this ecosystem to begin with, if you care about the value of your Bitcoins'. If an exchange will support this scam just to make a bit of extra money-- what else might they do?
There are more exchanges that have BSV shitcoin listed, and most volume reported on Coingecko is in Digifinex exchange, and you can also add AscendEX (BitMax) exchange.
I don't think withdrawing Bitcoin from this exchanges will solve anything, and people shouldn't really hold coins on any centralized exchange.

Fun fact, BSV network is totally unsustainable, and like Jameson Lopp recently posted on twitter, it exceeded 7 TB, adding 4 GB per day, priced at ~$50 per gigabyte in transaction fees  Cheesy
It's just a matter of time when this crap will stop existing by itself:

3668  Other / Meta / Re: Bitcointalk sending unsolicited e-mails (spam)? on: October 06, 2022, 07:18:13 PM
Can someone explain what is going on?
NeuroticFish is right, you exposed your email publicly in your forum profile and maybe some other places, so it was easy for someone to scrap it and send you email spam.
I suggest closing and deleting this relay email address, than you should create new one that is hidden in your profile settings, and not exposed in public.
Go to your profile and select option Account Related Settings, than check option Hide email address from public? like shown in image below.
Now you won't have any issues with email spam.

PS
I wouldn't fully trust Firefox relay or any other similar centralized services like that, but there is other alternatives like AnonAddy or SimpleLogin.
3669  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: If btc are in hardware wallet, then how to claim forks? on: October 06, 2022, 04:44:24 PM
Passport gives you 20 'retries', so I guess 21 tries in total. It appears to me that it permanently bricks itself, like the ColdCard, if you exhaust all attempts.
Entering the right PIN once, resets the counter.
Thanks for this information, I think this is better than Coldcard, Trezor and ledger wallets have.
I started collecting this from all other hardware wallets and I found out that BitBox02 wallet is blocked after ten wrong PIN attempts, but I am not sure what ''blocked'' really means, is it bricked or just wiped.
You can see that each hardware wallet have this option set up differently, so I would appreciate if other members could help me collecting this information.

This is quite easy to avoid: move your Bitcoins to safety, sign transactions offline, and make separate exchanges on different exchangers for each address you own.
Yeah but it's not so easy to do this for newbies, they would have to register on many exchanges and probably go with some kind of registration with them.
If they don't have Bitcoin held for years in same address I doubt they would earn much.
Oh and I know you have fork claiming service LoyceV  Cheesy

3671  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Interview with the organizers of Adopting Bitcoin (El Salvador) on: October 06, 2022, 03:25:32 PM
Though I'm no fan of top-down adoption and didn't join Bitcoin to deal with governments, I support the event for a very simple reason: I know that, at one point, the government is going to change and the legal tender status of BTC is rather fragile. But I want normal everyday people to be prepared for the inevitable changes and learn more about how to protect themselves against wealth confiscation and the money printer.
We should never forget how various governments confiscated gold, land property and everything else from people in history.
I am almost sure they will try to do the same thing with Bitcoin in future, maybe not in entire world but very likely it's going to happen in some countries.
With this stupid green agenda brainwashing it's just a matter of time when they are going to start targeting Bitcoin miners worldwide, so we better get ready for that.

So I've recorded an interview with Kemal and Noor, two of the co-organizers of the Adopting Bitcoin event. If you're planning to visit El Salvador next month, you're definitely going to find this interesting.
I don't like how they started adopting Bitcoin in El Salvador with centralized wallet Chivo, but it's still better than nothing.
Vlad are you going to El Salvador or not?
3672  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: If btc are in hardware wallet, then how to claim forks? on: October 06, 2022, 02:52:36 PM
For ledger nano, putting the wrong pin 3 times is a recommended way by the manufacturer to reset the device. It will never brick it.
I know that works for ledger devices but it's not the same universal answer for all other hardware wallets, so it's not good to give him general answer like you did.
3 wrong pins is low for any wallet in my opinion, for example, Trezor hardware wallet it was 16 failed attempts but delay time was longer each time you enter wrong pin, and after this device will be wiped.
I didn't research in details all other hardware wallets, but it's possible I would do it in near future, this is important for device security.

I didn't know about this brick feature in coldcard. I saw in their docs that they have an especific pin to break the device, which is called brick me pin
Yeah and Coldcard sometimes bricks even by itself, if it has SD card inside  Cheesy
I would like to hear from n0nce and how PIN thing works with Passport wallet.
3673  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Best cold wallet for BTC storage? on: October 06, 2022, 01:49:24 PM
I heard that hardware wallets are the way to prevent that... but what would be the best one?
All I really need is for it to be functional and have Bitcoin support.
All hardware wallets usually support Bitcoin but they are not all the same and you don't even have to buy them if you only want to store Bitcoin.
You can use your old laptop, make it offline without internet connection, format it and install fresh encrypted Linux OS with Electrum wallet.
Alternative option is to use your laptop in combination with Tails OS and Electrum wallet for making transaction.

I heard that Trezor or Ledger hardware wallets are pretty good... but what do you guys think?
I would never buy ledger wallet again, it is closed source, it has bad quality control, and it is mostly oriented towards shitcoins.
Trezor wallet is better, it is open source but it doesn't have secure element yet, so it can be less secure if used without passphrase.
Hardware wallets are quick and easy solution, but you should be careful how you purchase them, and what data you leave as that often gets hacked and leaked online.
Topic I made [LIST] Open Source Hardware Wallets is worth checking out for more information, but I think that Trezor, Bitbox, Passport and Keystone are all OK.

PS
You don't have to write your full name, workplace and email address with your full history here...
3674  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Do not use your phone number for crypto registration and other crypto related th on: October 06, 2022, 01:32:43 PM
There are few exchanges that allow users to create account using their mobile phone numbers, compare to using email account I think phone numbers has more risk than email account, if you are a newbie and you want to create an account on a exchange please use an email address instead.
Using email is a much better option and you can easily create almost unlimited amount of normal and temporary emails, but problem is that some exchanges and services are asking for mandatory phone numbers.
If you must use phone numbers than you can try using temporary voip numbers or buy prepaid cards without connection with your real identity.
Note that Bisq exchange wont ask you for email, home address, passport or your phone number Wink
3675  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Indiegogo launch - help us! :o on: October 06, 2022, 01:04:52 PM
If somebody put the hands in you paper or cryptosteel, he can read and stole your crypto. But if you store your seed in CryptoPlatz Card, he can't ready and stole, because is encrypted.
Yes, but they can't have my coins if I have one or more strong passphrases on top of my paper or metal plate.
CryptoPlatz is encrypted, but if customer used weak password that it can be hacked and extracted by someone who knows how to do it.
I am not saying CryptoPlatzdon't have some advantages, but it's certainly not universally perfect solution.

The password is optional, if you use, will be encrypted.
Wait a minute, if password is only optional than there is no real difference compared to regular paper or metal plate.

Yes, you are correct. This is a prototype in PVC. Because that we are on https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/cryptoplatz-card to manufactory in metal stainless.
I guess you could create some free campaign or beta testing for this prototype PVC cards, and if everything works fine you could probably collect funds easier on indiegogo.
Problem I have with stainless steel material over NFC chip is that it could block the antenna signal and not work in the real life.
3676  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: If btc are in hardware wallet, then how to claim forks? on: October 06, 2022, 12:34:56 PM
Just put the wrong pin 3 times and it is wiped out. Just generate a new wallet.
I would be very careful doing this wrong pin entering, and I would never suggest that to any newbie as it can brick some hardware wallets and make then unusable forever.
All hardware wallets I know have option to reset and wipe them from menu settings and I would always choose that option first.
I think that Coldcard wallet get's bricked after entering wrong PIN 13 times.

Forks may be worth a considerable amount of money if they are converted to btc as fast as possible. They are all scams but they are worth money when forked.
All those forks are not really free money, because you are exposing your addresses and sometime even your private keys just to receive few bucks.
Not to mention that constantly chasing next fork you could easily get scammed if you are not careful.

3678  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Asking about anonymity when I pay with Bitcoin on: October 06, 2022, 12:04:46 PM
A lot of people are missing the point that a certain exchange or DEX not asking for KYC doesn't mean every trade you executed on their platform is totally anonymous.
You need to read the exchange Tos, check if the site is not using Cloudflare (which is enough to track you down), and also use the Tor browser
Most DEX exchanges are not really decentralized (except maybe Bisq) but this should not be confused with anonymity or with IP addresses.
You can easily change your IP address with Tor or VPN, but IP address should not reveal your identity directly.
Cloudflare is a problem, they are supporting bunch of shitcoin nodes and they just censored Tornado Cash IPFS app bundle.

Almost all services sell your data. There's easy ways to find this out by just using a clean email address. It's almost to the point its comical. They either do this according to their terms of service, or they ask you for permission to do this or even worse they just do it illegally. Normally, when you bring this issue up to them, they'll offer you come sort of compensation, which is also wrong, but I won't even go into that.
Almost all...so are you excluding Bitcointalk forum from this? Wink
Even if they don't sell data, this can (and probably will) easily be hacked and exploited at some point in future.
3679  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin hash rate hits new all-time high! on: October 05, 2022, 03:08:58 PM
I am curious that maybe there are some miners who switch from Ethereum to Bitcoin because Ethereum now is on POS, so this could be a factor too.
They can't use shitereum GPU miners for mining Bitcoin, except maybe with some nicehash workaround, but that probably wouldn't create this all-time high.
Maybe people sold their GPU and purchased ASIC miners, but price for used GPU's dropped very low that I don't think this would make any sense.
Bitcoin is far from dead, and it's the only blockchain network in the world that doesn't have censorship or ofac compliance built in.

It is possible to mine Bitcoin with GPU / Graphic Cards, isn't it?
I think it was possible with Nicehash before, but I am not sure if that is profitable now.
3680  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Indiegogo launch - help us! :o on: October 05, 2022, 02:57:41 PM
You can use any app like (NFC tools) to use our card (it is industry standard) to write and read information stored on the card
Ok that is better, but I am careful with anything that uses NFC, that is just short range antenna, so in theory it can be hacked.

For now, it is in test, so please take a look on this video
Card on this video doesn't look like it's made from stainless steel to me.
I would remove word Crypto from card or add something like CP shortcut with logo, to avoid getting attention from bad people.

There are similar apps, but they are cryptocurrency wallet. CryptoPlatz it is not a wallet, it is a storage to save you seed recovery phrase. CryptoPlatz it is compatible with Trezor, Ledger, Exodus, TrustWallet and any other wallet that demand you to save the seed recovery phrase on a paper.
No, I am sure Satochip/Satodime/SeedKeeer and one other company (can't remember the name) have cards who can be used only for storing recovery phrase.
Maybe they are not made from stainless steel but they work in similar way like Crypto Platz.
