3841  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: GPU vs FPGA help me out.. on: April 04, 2012, 03:46:46 AM
FPGA can only be reprogrammed if the FPGA has bitstream encryption disabled, or if you have the encryption key.

A certain vendor has locked down FPGA which require an encrypted bitstream.  That makes non-Bitcoin resale value essentially $0.00.
Are you quite sure? My understanding was that a key was flashed into a non-readable and non-reversable memory area on the device, which could be consulted as necessary if the bitstream was encrypted. Otherwise, the key would be ignored.

Quote from: Xilinx employee
Reagrdless of having a key in efuse or BBRAM, you may always use a non-encrypted bitstream through JTAG (see the configuration users guide, pp 83, paragraph 5.

I just dont understand why some of these people voted - does not make sense to me so I had to share my opinion

I mean seriously 15% think Slush is not trustworthy? Come on...

this poll is FUBAR

To be fair, any poll in the Pools forum is pretty much just a test of how rabid the users of pools are.  The polls on this thread have been popularity contests (or how loud the haters were), rather than their trustworthiness (or lack thereof).  Even polls specifically for a pool on their own thread tend to give pretty awkward results that don't give an accurate representation of the overall pool users.
+1, pretty much. It's really difficult to get an accurate representative sample of users here.

Oh, they are your customers, like it or not. Both buyers and sellers of hashing power are contracting with you to provide a service. I understand and empathize with not wanting to deal with whiners, I just ask that you try not to brush off everything negative as a malevolent complaint.
BinaryMage, you make valid points and I agree. There are whiners, and there are people (such as yourself) asking valid questions, pointing out valid deficiencies, suggesting improvements. All of these have a similar sound to those casually listening. It takes care to distinguish one from the other. Not everyone will.
I would recommend that you start a competing service. I am certain that Pirateat40 would love to have some real actual competition. Make a better mousetrap, and the world is yours. But until then, the one with the monopoly can do as he pleases.
3846  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: GLBSE 2.0, Is safer now. on: April 04, 2012, 01:03:23 AM
He already told you, but you are too slow to understand simple statements.

1. Large number of attempted logins
2. All GLBSE asset issuers are required to present this information as of v2.0
 a. Verification is a manual process and will take a while to finish verifying evryone

He wouldn't be breaking his terms of service, but providing the identifying information to the police as part of an investigation would result in it becoming public in the police report.
3847  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Mt Gox - delays with telegraphic transfers? on: April 04, 2012, 12:39:18 AM
Mt Gox could have prevented this totally by simply sending a message to each user via email AND a message upon login. These aren't particularly difficult things to do.

"I got screwed, so did you" is simply admitting they've done the wrong thing. I expect them to fix it - it's their bank, not mine! I haven't done anything wrong and as a customer, an organisation that wants to do the right by them should be doing all it can to fix the problem and not let me be disadvantaged. Sorry, but me being without my funds for up to 4 weeks is totally unacceptable. And it IS Mt Gox's fault.
You really actually expect them to spam all their users with such a notification, even those that have not, will not, and can not use that particular deposit method? With all due respect sir, you are naive. One alternative way to alleviate this issue may be to notify only those that have used that method previously, but even then I would usually suggest checking the site to ensure that the deposit method is actually available before using it.

Hmm. I have a few bottles of Halon sitting around here, pulled from an old suppression system. They would cost a shit ton to ship, but does anyone wanna buy a fire suppression system that won't damage your rigs? Name your price Cheesy

Big Fike bottles

Little Fike bottle

Hey that little one might actually be cool for my operation... It used to be in the rectifier room at the datacenter we converted to an office.... In other news, anyone want some used CRAC units? Liebert 10 ton upflow, 4 stages, with humidifier and dehumidifier...  4 available</end advertising>

No disrespect to Jered, but it would be ever so nice if Evorhees could also make it as a speaker.

I agree 100%

You should send them a better pic, it's all redeye and shit.

So it sounds like everyone wants to get started sooner rather than later.

As for verification of my has rate, I took a screen cap of my farm monitoring webpage. -> https://i.imgur.com/ctnX9.jpg

You'll notice all GPUs are underclocked as it's getting a little hot here in FL.

I guess it's time to talk with Nefario and get my glbse.com account verified.

My coins can't wait to roll in!

The sheeple lining up to be fleeced, it is a beautiful sight..
Go back to your cave.
3852  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: GLBSE 2.0, Is safer now. on: April 03, 2012, 10:12:16 PM
Wasn't (at one time) the plan to make verification optional, but if you skipped the verification your account would have scary warnings and such things, saying that it isn't verified? Which would enable shareholders to react appropriately.
3853  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: What to buy with $10K? on: April 03, 2012, 09:15:12 PM
but even with these more efficient chips...... How do you know that they will actually use the amount of power BFL says they will? If I'm not mistaken they said their singles were going to use only 40 watts in the beginning? maybe it was 60? theres no way of knowing what the actual power consumption is going to be until they get one built and test it.

Btw 1250 watts at 25 Gh/s sounds a whole lot like 125 spartan 6's =p but at 15k they would have to be getting them dirt cheap like $100 per spartan....
They have rejiggered the wattage claims since the singles have shipped. The initial claim was 800 watts at ~54 ghps, so the revised claims of 2500 watts at 50 ghps (or half that for the mini-rig) are likely to be closer to reality.

Nefario, are there any restrictions on what characters a password may contain? Upon creation of a new account, I used Lastpass to generate a secure password with all kinds of odd characters, and got a 502 server error when submitting the registration form, and then when I tried again it said that I was already registered. So I tried resetting the password via email, and that appeared to be successful, but I cannot login still.

Also, the captcha should probably only come up after 1 or 2 failed logins, it is somewhat annoying.

3855  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Fire Alarms? on: April 03, 2012, 07:51:10 PM
With the sometimes questionable construction of mining rigs and running lots of GPUs with lots of power in tight spaces, I wonder if having a fire alarm directly over the setup would be a good idea.

What smoke/fire alarms would be good for electrical fires?  I have this nagging suspicion that the $5 ones at wal-mart aren't the best.  Grin

Maybe even have it rigged so if there's smoke the power is automatically cut...
Fairly sure there are regulations on minimum performance levels of something as important as a smoke detector, so even the cheap ones should be OK. As for auto power shutdown, well I don't know if anyone has really thought of that. Of course, expensive UPSs have an EPO (Emergency Power Off) port that kills the load if you connect the pins together, but no one uses those for mining.

I don't even know of any smoke detectors with relay or signal outputs, other than expensive built-in systems used for commercial buildings. It would be a good idea though.

Until then, relax and if you're not happy there's nobody keeping you here.

Sorry but I don't think this part was needed.
The truth hurts, doesn't it.
3857  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The other bitcoin mining on: April 03, 2012, 06:06:42 PM

I'm referring to data mining of the block chain.

There's a wealth of information here that is interesting and valuable for various reasons.  For monitoring the health of the network, testing economic theory, tracking controlling parties, doing psychological studies, optimizing trading strategies, etc.  There are other threads that ask this but I'm going to ask again if people can recommend some good open source tools for getting into this field of research.  I am considering starting with the ABE codebase, are there any other good places to look?  Thanks - -
I've never seen this in action (couldn't get it to work), but I'd be interested to know whether it helps: https://github.com/dirtyfilthy/bitten

That symbol has been representative of the Thai Baht since before Bitcoin existed.
