3861  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Magazine on: April 03, 2012, 05:30:51 PM
Matt shipped the "special" advertising issue along with "issue #S," I guess because I was complaining about having to read deodorant labels.  Cheesy

Anyway, UPS carrier just dropped off the magazine a few minutes ago. The first thing I'm greeted to is a torn-off piece of paper some guy named "Bob" signed saying this is just a sample copy, not finished, blah blah blah, and asked me not to show it to anyone else. ... But it didn't say anything about describing it.  Wink

First off (after reading the note from "Bob"), I was shocked to find the magazine did NOT have the high-gloss paper Matt was talking about earlier. This is the cheapest of the cheap paper -- I thought it was a joke at first. It's about a quarter the thickness of "normal" stationary and tears with little effort. Most of the pages are colored, but there are clearly some problems with their printer. The front and back cover have the high-gloss, sturdy paper which Matt was talking about and that stuff looks fantastic. Don't worry too much, though - I'd guess they'll have this worked out by the time the "real" magazine ships.

I scanned to make sure there are no spelling errors, and all looks good there. They have a wide array of authors, though many of them aren't even named, which seems sketchy. ... Onto the good stuff -- there is a fantastic Q&A with Gavin where he describes his experiences with Satoshi and how he went into hiding after Gavin went to the CIA to talk about Bitcoin (there's a thread on this somewhere). The articles seem largely made for people who are skeptical of Bitcoin. Though there are explicit ads, the articles sometimes will talk about how to buy Bitcoins, and there's a spiffy Exchange Comparison table, showing pros and cons, like how quickly you can get funds in, what trading fees are, and a customer satisfaction "survey" (which I'm not sure is all that "scientific").

There are a couple different articles addressing GLBSE, one on "are Bitcoins copyrighted?" (haven't read it, yet), a loooong not-so-humble "staff introduction" section, and an article going over the "rise, fall, then rise again" of Bitcoin. Overall, there really isn't that much content, but in the note from "Bob," it's said they haven't finished adding all the articles they want and "the Board" is still debating which articles to cut and add.

There are some problems, but it looks like they have easy fixes. Can't wait to see the actual magazine!

ETA: It did not come in a plastic wrapper -- just the magazine in a box it fit snugly in -- I'm guessing that's not how it'll be shipped when "it ships."
Uh huh, and it weighs 8 lbs too.

Yay, finally disposed of shitcoin. Might want to remove it from your sig.
3863  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Inter p2p-currency trading on: April 03, 2012, 04:09:27 PM
I think by now people above would have got reply what other p2p currencies exists.
The answer is: none that actually matter, and there are several other places you could have found this out before reviving ancient threads from the grave.
The possible exceptions to the "none that actually matter" statement are Litecoins (different proof-of-work), and Namecoins (Distributed P2P DNS with a coin system backing it). All others are outright scams.

Now please let this thread die.
3864  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: ASIC's (Australian Securities and Investments Commission) policy on Tradehill :) on: April 03, 2012, 04:04:53 PM
Apologies for raising this thread from the dead. Can someone PM me the details for contacting ASIC (email addy?) in reference to a similar query I have. This time its the broker WorldBitcoinExchange, based and registered in Australia.
WBX has its own thread (search for it), and was delisted a while ago before he closed up shop.

I don't like to ruin it for you guys but what's going to prevent me from shopping a message & timestamp onto some random picture floating around the web?
Presumably only idiots will send money to a shooped address. That's why it should be written on the body or in her own handwriting.

Wow guys, the last several pages have just been people complaining about prices and whether they are getting work. Calm down. I'll restate a few important points, and hopefully you guys will understand what is happening since you haven't read the whole thread.

1.) GPUMAX does not always provide public work, and you shouldn't necessarily expect them to.
  a. Due to ever increasing demand, the backend had to be shifted to new servers. Moving to new servers always requires tweaking for performance, and often features will be enabled slowly to make sure something didn't break during the move.
2.) The software is continuously being improved, although I suspect that the majority of fixes and improvements currently are to the backend systems to achieve an excellent level of service.
  a. Like any competent company or developer, NEW features are not being released willy-nilly, but are tested extensively before deployment.
  b. The coming upgrades apparently are rather major, and therefore would be needing a lot more testing and debugging than just a few simple changes.
3.) Public work that is provided is being activated manually by someone, and therefore cannot run at all times or instantly.
4.) Pricing is dependent on both your ask and your hashpower. Those with 200ghps will have more say over the prices than those with 2ghps.
  a. Additionally, several small users might be able to affect the price if they work together, which is probably why it has been moving down (people reducing the price during periods of no work, trying to get paid even though there is no work).

If any of this is incorrect, I am sure that our swashbuckling pirate will provide corrections.

Just deal with this Goat, enough soap opera...  Cry

You could have sent a message to your share holders via GLBSE and dealt with this in private between yourself and Nefario. It would more than likely be resolved already.

How could I have done that with when I was locked out of my account?
I bet if you asked him he would have done so for you.

@Nefario, I was not so worried about this being legal or not since I was anon. You want me to now not be anon:/

I'm going to look into this further as I do not want to be sued or jailed.

I still think it was uncalled for you to try and get people to freeze my coins. That leaves me with a very bitter taste.
You were never anon. Your IP had been logged, it's tied to this forum where there is a picture of you and messages in the db that I'm sure your email is located. A few members in the trading section have your address and probably a birth name.

Still can not tell if you are serious Goat...
+1. If you are trying to be anonymous, you are failing quite badly. In any case, Goat requires things to be done in small baby steps so that he can grasp what is happening. I think the sensory overload of a bunch of things at once is probably getting to him.

Awesome, etotheipi. You do have wonderful GUI-fu to be sure. I think you can pull it off.

TL;DR, how many thesauruses (thesauri?) did you burn through when making this post?
3873  Economy / Services / Re: GPUMAX | The Bitcoin Mining Marketplace on: April 03, 2012, 02:10:36 AM
Okay, so here's another question, isn't that sort of ripping everyone off? i.e. random mentioned above is getting paid disproportionately more per share, when those more valuable shares should be getting spread around the people who are on that pool?
so the people simply mining for a pool are now getting their well paying shares sniped by us?

Don't get me wrong, if no one else sees a problem with this, and this being a capitalist planet, I'm happy getting  ~0.000046 BTC per share for the time being.

Thank you!
If you don't like the idea of enriching someone else, you are free to mine a a real pool that pays out with a fair algorithm, such as DGM. But you won't be paid as much.

Welcome to Bitcoin Ladies!  Please identify yourselves so we can lump you together and distinguish you from other bitcoiners.
Yeah that's kind of what I thought when I read the OP.  Undecided

Unfortunately, I know the OP's problem first hand as the whole goal of the now defunct and now banned website I had was to provide the following mentioned below:  Embarrassed

  • How to cash out on Mt.Gox and other exchanges
  • How to buy/sell goods on bitmit
  • Wallet guides for blockchain.info, strongcoin.com, bitmit, and instawallet
  • How to generate QR codes
  • Why firstbits are awesome and how to use them

The idea has since gone totally the wrong direction it seems.

Maybe, Ladybytes there is still room to collaborate together and help out and inspire bitcoin women to succeed in bitcoin through bitcoin education for new ideas maybe like a women.gonebitcoin.com off-shoot ? The sub-reddit is a good idea I highly suggest you do this.

Good to hear your thoughts!

He's just pissed that he didn't register the "girlsgonebitcoin" as a reddit username, I'll bet.
3878  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: How do you start a computer without the Case power button? on: April 03, 2012, 12:04:19 AM
So I grabbed an MSi K9A2 CF v2 for $45, and bought a CPU on newegg for $20. I have a power supply on it's way as well. I will be running (3) 5830's on this rig. Although I ran into a slight problem... How the heck do you start a Motherboard without the Case's Power/Restart button? I assume I would have to hot wire those little JFP1/2 pins to start the computer up. Would I need any resistors, diodes, etc? Or would simply connecting two pins together with a small wire work?
Just touch the PWRBTN pins with a screwdriver, no need to keep them connected. Hold for 4 sec if you need to hard-shutdown the machine.

The difficulty just went up.

Not by the same percentage as the drop in rewards though. It looks like difficulty increased by about 10% which should give me about .32BTC per day not .20-.25

[Edit]

After some research this appears to be a direct result of the so called mystery miner. Time will tell if this can be reverse or if it is going to be a permanent problem for Bitcoin.
Well besides the difficulty difference, you might also be losing to hoppers. How would the mystery miner affect it, unless he is somehow stealing your hashes (not possible)?
3880  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: GLBSE 2.0 open for testing on: April 02, 2012, 11:36:59 PM
Yubikeys are not cheap for the end user, but they are free for you to implement.
And if GLBSE were to implement it, someone with an existing Mt. Gox yubikey could use it as well, right?
No, because Mtgox uses their own authentication server and custom programmed Yubikeys. It theoretically would be possible to liaise with Mtgox and use their auth server, but I doubt that they would allow it. Making it optional would of course be the best way to go.
