401  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Do you know what the most dangerous Halloween costume is? on: November 01, 2014, 02:31:32 AM
Halloween is actually one of the more dangerous times for many people because there is a legitimate reason for people to be wearing masks, so it will not raise a lot of suspicion when people are 'running' around in costumes that hide their identity.

I think the OP's example is an isolated incident as many people dress up as cops and very few end up getting shot
402  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo has been lost on: November 01, 2014, 02:28:51 AM
This really is too bad. It has been many decades since we have lost anyone in any kind of space mission.

IMO it is important to continue to work in and explore in space as there is a lot of potential for scientific and medical advancement that can be potentially achieved in space that would not be possible in places with gravity (on earth)
403  Other / Politics & Society / Re: US Government accidentally sends weapons to ISIS, then lets them keep them on: November 01, 2014, 02:25:54 AM
Let's hope those weapons are actually trojans. They are GPS tracked and can be remotely detonated.  Roll Eyes
They were not. Didn't you see what happened with the fast and the furious program? The DEA sold weapons to drug cartels and lost track of them, only to find them at the murder scene of a boarder patrol agent some months later. There were no GPS devices on these guns when they were intentionally given to the enemy......why would they put GPS on guns they accidentally give to the enemy?
404  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Pirate Bay founder Gottfrid Warg gets lengthy jail term on: November 01, 2014, 02:22:13 AM
IP laws seem to be particularly harsh. This is no doubt because of the large number of lawsuits that revolve around IP (as well as the associated income to trial lawyers). It is the trial lawyers who traditionally carry a lot of political power and want to make these laws strict in order to generate more income for themselves
405  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: .18 BTC Bounty for CasaBitcoin.com Bitcoin Social Network Logo Design on: November 01, 2014, 02:18:42 AM
I agree with TECSHARE, the OP is offering to pay a well below market price for a logo. Someone with experience in graphic design are going to make several times this amount for a new logo.

To the people who are saying the person who designed the nike logo - the $35 she received is worth many times that on an inflation adjusted basis. $35 40 years ago would be worth ~$170 today. The OP is offing to pay ~$60 worth of bitcoin to someone for a likely more complex logo. Plus the fact that the OP likely will get more then one "entry" so there is a good chance that you will do work and not receive payment
406  Other / Meta / Re: Spammathon: Brought to you by Candystripes on: October 31, 2014, 09:53:13 PM
You know you could easily recover this account if you have previous trades with someone or you have posted your bitcoin address. You just need to sign the address with a PGP key to BadBear.

Simple as that.
BadBear has said previously that he will not recover any lost accounts. He seems to think it poses too much risk to recover accounts to the incorrect person.

That leaves him with theymos, who has said that account recovery tends to be a low level priority. Plus the fact that candystripes should have access to the account at one point as it was voluntarily given to candystripes, and the fact that the mods do not moderate against scams (which is what this is by candystripes) would lead me to believe that he is not going to get his account back via the forum
407  Other / Meta / Re: bitcointalk.org sells users passwords on: October 31, 2014, 09:39:48 PM
If the forum is the "leak" of your gmail password then the attacker is your ISP (or VPN if you use one). If you are using the same password across multiple sites then I think it is safe to assume that you did not change your password after you were advised to do so.

I am not 100% sure if gmail was affected by POODLE

The POODLE vulnerability in TLS/SSL could have allowed a man-in-the-middle attacker to read encrypted forum traffic. For example, Tor exit nodes could have used this attack against anyone using Tor to access the forum. I disabled SSLv3 to prevent this attack in the future, and I logged everyone out to invalidate any possibly-compromised cookies. If you used a proxy or ISP that you don't absolutely trust to access the forum, then you should also change your password.

Most other sites are similarly affected.
408  Economy / Economics / Re: Bitcoin as a Retirement Account on: October 31, 2014, 06:58:46 AM
Are there such things as time locked transactions with a single key?  Do they send the transaction with a date in the future? What happens if you lose the key the coins are destined for before you reach retirement age?

I have heard that one can make a transaction which will not confirm before a predetermined block. I am not sure about the details, but the coins will be in limbo for the time being, receiving address will be able to spend it when it gets 1 confirmation in the predetermined future.

So, in essence, one would be hoping that the wouldn't lose their private key in 30 or 40 years? That's beside the speculation as to whether or not bitcoin itself will still be around in the future? I know we all want it to be, but storing huge sums with no way to yank it out if something negative occurs, neither of those seem like especially wise decisions...
In theory you can take certain precautions to prevent the loss of your private keys, for example a multisig address that can be signed by multiple brain wallets, I think it would be unlikely that brain wallet farmers would be checking these kinds of brain wallets, and you could keep your keys in your head.

I do agree with the issue of not knowing if bitcoin will still be around by the time someone retires. One feature of most/all retirement accounts is the fact that you have the option to sell an investment, but keep the proceeds in your retirement account if you think it is no longer appropriate to hold such an investment
409  Economy / Economics / Re: "Apple Pay" on: October 31, 2014, 06:55:00 AM
Anyone here used that app already?
There are a couple of banks that are offering promotions for people to use their credit/debit card with apple pay. I think apple pay will be a boom for banks because it will get customers to use their specific card if their card is linked to their smartphone

415  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin Price Is Not Rebounding,why? on: October 21, 2014, 01:27:03 AM
Bitcoin is more stable than it was. The bubble cycles will be further apart and be more controlled.
Also, too many people are "expecting" it to go up. The universe then says "no" Tongue

We are currently in a slow trend reversal if you ask me.

Bitcoin will still be unstable as government continue to control and conquer bitcoin..
