401  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Contrary to Mt.Gox’s Statement, Bitcoin is not at fault - Gavin Andresen 10/2/14 on: February 16, 2014, 06:27:17 PM
I also find the Gox prices ridiculous. My explanation is that there are many users who are simply uninformed. They have not read the forums or the Mt. Gox announcements. They are panicking.

I guess we are hitting the bottom around now. I think the price cannot go down to $200 while it is $600 on the other exchanges. There must be some people with some reason who buy at prices below $250.

If it never opens again, that price is meaningless.  Similarly, when you can't actually get it out, it's not even Bitcoins you're buying, but a nominal Gox balance.  If they ever again start reliably processing withdrawals, the price will soon come into line with the other exchanges, but that's seeming pretty iffy right now.

I think a number of people are gambling that Gox will, in fact, come back up again at some point, and are purchasing people's Gox balances at a deep discount.  I've seen such offers floating around on BCT and elsewhere.

This is assuming there isn't more direct and deliberate price manipulation by insiders or others.
402  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Silk Road 2.0 hacked through malleability, ~4000 BTC STOLEN on: February 15, 2014, 09:06:28 PM
So is the jury out wether this was a hack or inside job yet?

bitcoin is like the homosexual to currency (don't get my wrong 1000 BTC is good, but peercoin is the way to go long term)

What the hell does that mean?

I think, attempting to translate the poster's original comments, that it means "I am really dumb."

I could be wrong, though.
403  Economy / Gambling / Re: SealsWithClubs.eu | Largest Bitcoin Poker Site | No Banking | Fast Cashouts on: February 15, 2014, 07:45:15 PM
hey all. I tried to download the PC client but it open a DOS window asking me a lot of questions about .wav files, and then nothing happens. I'm using windows 7. Anyone knows how to solve it?

Sounds like you have a badly configured or even malicious (trojan) zip handler.
404  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Contrary to Mt.Gox’s Statement, Bitcoin is not at fault - Gavin Andresen 10/2/14 on: February 15, 2014, 07:43:57 PM
Not by those who have funds on Mt. Gox. And they are many. For them it is highly interesting to predict what will happen.

Good point.  People who have funds on Gox probably do have an interest in that number.  I have a name for those people.  I call them "fools."
405  Economy / Speculation / Re: Dont fall for Marks strategy. Read b4 making any trade decision. on: February 15, 2014, 07:42:20 PM
Out of curiosity, could you list some of these? My main platform atm is Bitstamp and I have for over a year now been part of the "Gox is shit, stop doing business with them"-crowd.

However, I fear Stamp might suffer from the same fundamental flaws of incompetency as Gox, just better masked, and that they are headed for the same fate. I guess only time will tell. In the mean I'd love to keep a closer eye on these exchanges "built by pros" as you put it.

Actually, Bitstamp did issue an announcement suspending withdrawals temporarily.  However, unlike Gox, which demanded everyone else clean up its poopies, it appears just to be fixing the problem with its own software and will probably resume withdrawals shortly.

Just encountered this message.  Bitstamp has resumed withdrawals basically just a bit ago.
406  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: State of Florida attacks Bitcoin on: February 15, 2014, 07:39:08 PM
People who say we should legalize drugs and tax them need to be corrected (if you look above, I've personally already done so once). But people who say we should legalize drugs and don't mention taxes, don't need to be criticized.

We don't have this choice, though.  If something gets legalized, it is pretty much a matter of course that it will also be taxed, just like every other form of economic activity.  Now, perhaps this isn't the way it should be, but that's the way it is.  In any event, allowed but taxed is an incremental step in the right direction, and is preferable to prohibited.

So if we had prohibited, allowed but taxed, and allowed and untaxed on our menu of choices, the latter might be the best option.  But we don't.  In fact, it would be damn near a miracle if we even had "allowed but taxed" on our menu.

Propaganda is not argument.
408  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Contrary to Mt.Gox’s Statement, Bitcoin is not at fault - Gavin Andresen 10/2/14 on: February 15, 2014, 12:38:47 PM
The price has already stabilized, so far as I can tell.

Yes, but at what price? The Mt. Gox dollar price is only about 60% of the Bitstamp price.

Who cares?  I can get the Bitstamp price.  The Gox price has been fictional for well over a year.  It needs to be disregarded utterly.
409  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Silk Road 2.0 hacked through malleability, ~4000 BTC STOLEN on: February 15, 2014, 12:37:13 PM
Silk road wasnt hacked. The owners took off with the coins, were duly exposed and now the forum is awash with thread after thread of distraught memmbers who are understandably after his blood. admin and mods tried to blame transaction malleability and  alleged the entire funds had been stolen under their noses.

you know, I really hate it when people come on here and start threads without checking the facts first.

It'd be nice if a mod would change this stupid subject line, which is a complete lie.  SR2 was not hacked.  You morons just got your money stolen, which was entirely predictable, you stupid dope fiends.
410  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Contrary to Mt.Gox’s Statement, Bitcoin is not at fault - Gavin Andresen 10/2/14 on: February 15, 2014, 12:04:43 AM
If Bitcoin is not at fault, why are the Bitcoin developers working hard to fix the issue now... Yeah...  Roll Eyes

Because the value of their assets dropped 50% and will continue to drop unless the problem is fixed.
And they worry that mtgox is too incompetent to fix it themselves

The price has already stabilized, so far as I can tell.
411  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: New Mt Gox Press Release - Feb 10 - they are claiming flaw in bitcoin protocol ! on: February 15, 2014, 12:04:05 AM
Ofcourse we (i assume no BTC newbies) agree on all your arguments. But to the outside world that is not important.

The problem, though, and I agree the "outside world" doesn't understand this and wouldn't without lengthy explanations they also probably wouldn't understand, is that on one side, you have the erring party, Gox, refusing to fix its own mistake.  The "other side," to the extent there even is an other side, is Gox's insane demand the entire rest of the Bitcoin world alter the way it does business in order to accommodate their mistake.

Clearly, this can't be done.

This problem has been on the to-do list for some time, and using the temporary transaction ID has been deprecated for literally years.  But to fix this issue, basically every piece of software out there has to be replaced.  This isn't going to be done instantly.

413  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: One-Man Protest at MtGpx Offices on: February 14, 2014, 04:44:11 PM
When you consider that some people have their lifetime savings invested in a cryptocurrency...
And when you look and see how fragile the Bitcoin economy is... a bug discovered in the network software locks thousands of people out of their Bitcoin deposits at the world's largest exchange.

Wake me up when a bug locks me out of my wallet.

Anyone who keeps their money on an exchange is an idiot.  Period.
414  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: New Mt Gox Press Release - Feb 10 - they are claiming flaw in bitcoin protocol ! on: February 14, 2014, 04:41:09 PM
I get that, i think you misunderstood. "they" was meant to be Gox. I'm sure everyone is trying to help. Gox does have a business but is blaming devs instead of rolling out a fix (like most other exchanges have or are). In return devs start blaming Gox.

Gox led with an attack.  The fact that their problem is their fault is just that, a fact.  It isn't an "attack" to point that out.  Their false claims that this is somehow the fault of the devs, though, are, well, false.  They had every opportunity to avoid making this mistake, and made it anyway.  Apparently, so did other exchanges, but Gox is unique in not rolling out a fix and instead blaming everyone else for their shoddy implementation.

Has any other exchange behaved in this atrocious manner?

I'll compare, for instance, Bitstamp.  Did they go around blaming everyone other than themselves?  No.  Their own press release was basically "Whoops.  Made a mistake, we're fixing it now."  And then they IMMEDIATELY fixed it.  That's how you do it if you're a professional.  Gox isn't unprofessional because they made a mistake.  Everyone makes mistakes.  They are unprofessional because of their pathetic and disgusting attempts at damage control, which involved trying to deflect blame to the entire world other than themselves.
415  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: State of Florida attacks Bitcoin on: February 14, 2014, 04:27:05 PM
Is buying stolen CC numbers a crime? Using the numbers would be but would possession of the numbers be illegal?

You're seriously asking this?  Yes, of course it is.  18 U.S.C. § 1029 and a host of related statutes.  I'm not sure which is most commonly prosecuted, but seriously, you're asking if buying stolen credit numbers is a crime or not?  WTF?  Does it take a genius to realize it is?
416  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Silk Road 2.0 hacked through malleability, ~4000 BTC STOLEN on: February 14, 2014, 07:06:51 AM
Why would the creator of Silk Road 2.0 sabotage his business like that by stealing all the money from the marketplace? Wouldn't he have made more money from the business long term instead of just taking the money and running, if he even took it in the first place?

You're basically asking "Why would someone run off with a couple million dollars?"

Is it really that hard to understand?
417  Economy / Speculation / Re: Dont fall for Marks strategy. Read b4 making any trade decision. on: February 14, 2014, 07:03:45 AM
this is why i have removed mtgox from cryptocoincharts.info ! the price on mtgox is not a bitcoin price. its something completely different. nobody should bother about the prices on mtgox. but i guess pigs are stupid and all exchanges follow the downtrend

While I am glad more and more sites are doing this, I have been perturbed for some time that the bogus prices on Gox have been taken seriously.  I hope more care is taken in the future as to which exchanges are included in indices.  Nobody seemed to have any problem with Gox's fictional prices when they were bringing up the average.
418  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: DID COINBASE ALSO SUSPENDED BITCOINS SALES PAYMENTS??? on: February 14, 2014, 06:39:22 AM
I take it this is your first time selling BTC at Coinbase ?

The wait is normal. I have had to wait longer many times. Never given a reason why (or any answer for that matter) when I put in a support ticket but eventually the money turns up in my account.

The wait is usually external to Coinbase.  It's a delay caused by the outmoded and primitive ACH (Automated Clearing House) system of electronic transfers used by U.S. banks.  To be fair, other countries use even more shitty systems.  Something like three business days is usually about right for how long these transfers take.

I had one Coinbase transaction take one day longer than they said it was going to.  Every other transaction, though, came in earlier than they said it would.  In one case, I had it the next day.  The ETA they give you when you make the cashout is almost always accurate, in my experience, and usually faster than they said.

I speak only of BTC --> USD transactions.  I generally sell rather than buy BTC.
419  Economy / Speculation / Re: Dont fall for Marks strategy. Read b4 making any trade decision. on: February 14, 2014, 06:34:50 AM
Interesting. Is there any exchange that hasn't suspended withdrawals?

I got USD from a Coinbase withdrawal yesterday, but the ACH was already in the pipeline before this news.  Considering they use Bitstamp, which has in fact suspended withdrawals temporarily, I'm not sure what would happen now.

I'm certainly not selling at this depressed price like some Nervous Nellies.

I'm actually kind of bummed my cash flow situation is such I can't buy some right now.  My position is definitely long-term hold, though.
420  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Silk Road 2.0 hacked through malleability, ~4000 BTC STOLEN on: February 14, 2014, 06:31:37 AM
Christ, reading this it's like Occam came to bitcointalk and traded in his razor for a plastic spork.

No shit.  And then tried to shave with it.  Is there seriously anyone here who believes this cock-and-bullshit story?

Also, there are still people out there stupid enough to treat an anonymous site exclusively operating for the purposes of criminal activity as a goddamn online wallet?  Are these people retarded?  How many times do they have to learn this lesson?
