421  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Does anyone else think bitcoin is a stupid name? on: November 22, 2013, 10:15:52 PM
but it is not a "coin"  which implies a physical thing.  That is the first hurdle you have to explain to the uninitiated.

What you control is a "password" or "key" or "private key"

which in turn controls "value"

hmmm "keyvalue"

"preceived" value

"preceivedkeyvalue"

or

"agreed upon" value

"agreekey"

"keyagree"

"digital cash" is probably more appropriate
423  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Does anyone else think bitcoin is a stupid name? on: November 22, 2013, 09:50:15 PM
Bitcoin is not a "Stupid" name but I'm afraid the terms "bitcoin" and "mining" are barriers to adoption and add an unnecessary layer of obfuscation to noobs when trying to explain what it is.  When I send bitcoin I'll often send a link to the receiving address to the recipient on Blockchain.info for confirmation.

I can't tell you how many times I've been asked by a noob "How do I get my coins out of the block chain" or think they have to push the "request payment" button on blockchain.info to "get their coins."

Just signed up with coinsetter from the US.  I entered all my personal details, passport, electric bill and got this:
Could you put that sooner in the process??
429  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Mike Hearn, Foundation's Law & Policy Chair, is pushing blacklists right now on: November 21, 2013, 05:45:48 PM
Speaking of threats:

The recent hearings in Washington discussed:

Virtual Currency Emerging Threats Working Group (VCET).  Founded by the FBI in 2012 includes DEA, US Attorney's offices, Criminal Division's Asset Forfeiture and Money Laundering Section and Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section.

I was told that it was three full floors in the FBI's Washington office.
430  Other / Meta / Re: Why was BCB's post edited? Is he "protected" ? on: November 21, 2013, 05:33:09 PM
Hrm? It wasn't "covered up". All I did was split those posts from the discussion and removed an off-topic mod note from what was otherwise an on-topic post so that we don't have to split it once again.
I'm sorry to disagree, here, about the "off-topic" mod note.
People reading this kind of political threads should know that BCB is interested in collecting IP addresses, and be aware of that risk.
Mod-note should have stayed.

I was going to PM BCB about it, but decided it was better everyone was made aware that between the time BCB posted and the time of my edit there was a tracking pixel in that post.
If his target was jdillon he should have PM'ed him the tracking pixel. Tracking everyone is not cool. And before someone asks, no, I don't think BCB was doing it with ill intent, I just didn't like the "drag surveillance" method he was using.

Agreed. It was a stupid thing to do and I've apologized for it.   Roul Duke (Psy) also know who I am.  I've nothing to hide.  Jdillion was not my target. I am not a hacker.

I've explained it.  I'm can't argue with the conspiracy theorists, nor get in to a 100 long page mock "debate" with Goat.
431  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: Inputs.io | Instant Payments, Offchain API, Secure Wallet, 235k+ BTC transferred on: November 21, 2013, 05:08:59 PM

many users have received their refund

That was a subtle one, TF, nice try.

Ha.  They are on to you TF.

I have been watching you so i can say that yes you hage logged in many times since then.

Sure did take you a long time to reply after getting caught even though you were online.

So you too are "Monitoring" my behavior.  Hmmm...

Also, If you can get a wireless password from an intern in the senate office building you are a better man then I.

433  Other / Meta / Re: BCB sent me an IP logger over PM on: November 21, 2013, 05:03:56 PM
No, I was interested in what country you were in.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=341184.msg3657851#msg3657851

It seemed that the "american-centric" bitcoin foundation was being question by foundation members and bitcointalk forum members about getting cozy with the government and Mike's discussion with coin marking. A majority of the ips of those viewing that thread were coming from outside the US.  So even taking into account TOR and VPN majority of the ips were from outside the US and obviously do not share the US  Foundation concerns.

For the record I think Mike is a very smart guy and a forward thinker and he was unduly personally attacked for asking a valid and important questions.

If we don't think about these issues as a community and address them in some way, you can be sure governments will be making those decisions for us.

Governments are already buying up and seizing bitcoin
Goverments are both privately and public assessing the threats of bitcoin and how to control it.

They love it when they see an adversary attack itself from within.  Divide and conquer.

A fractured bitcoin community is less of a threat to them then a unified community (that may still have their differences about the finer points of the politics of decentralized consensus and the protocol.)

Why not make a poll if you were so interested?

Good point.  Never even though of it. In retrospect the tracing bug was a stupid but ith the tracking bug it would just be a short test and when the thread flipped to a new page it would no longer be very active so it would just provide a sample of data.

I never though for a second of all the privacy and security concerns that users here obviously have. Anyone who goes on the internet, uses a cellular phone, or email or land line for that matter can no longer really have an assumption of privacy in today's world.   I assumed (obviously incorrectly) that those users posting here were savvy enough to be masking IP's if they were concerned about privacy and using alts to post things they did not want connected to their main accounts and using secure systems for their coin storage of any value and would not be posting to a forum known to be hacked and hosting exploits from a machine that also had access to their bitcoind and or storage with all the key loggers  and JS exploits around here

I actually did a survey once  when the Fincen Guidance came down in the US.  And it showed that 33% of the respondents were in favor of some sort of regulation but 67% where NOT in favor of any regulation of regulation.  If I had to guess the majority of those who were in favor were mostly in the US while those not in favor were most like some US but a majority of non-US voters.

I for one am not greatly concerned with masking my ip and I make all posts from a single account.  I am also in favor of some regulation as I am in the US and there is really no way around it if I want to operate my business legally in the US.

I very nearly settled, for no other reason than pure desperation.

Exactly. He knows he has most of your over a barrel and you'd settle just to get access to some of your funds.

Unfortunately, what he is doing is criminal.

This is how you fight Cryptolocker, Mickey:

http://malwaremustdie.blogspot.de/2013/11/tango-down-of-44-cryptolocker-cnc.html

(Hint: No need to change Bitcoin.)

+1^^. Why don't dollars get 'blamed' for illicit activity?

Eventually everyone will understand it's a law enforcement issue, not a currency issue.

You guy really need to read the senate testimony.  Not one law enforcement agency or regulator blamed bitcoin the protocol for anything.

Hey I'm not a fed.  Nor a hacker.  I was trying to determine what countries the users who where posting in that thread where coming from.  No ip's were logged or probed.  After the tracking pixel was discovered I got hammered by a few member (and doxed) and I took it down.  The AWS instance was terminated and the logs are now gone.  Stupid, but not malicious.  Anyone who know me personally, and many of you do, can attest to that.

If that's so, why were you to trying to conceal the fact that you were logging people's IP addresses?

Why did you decide to leave the forums for 6 days after being discovered?

Also it looks like you're also PM'ing people with the tracking pixels:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=341940.0

To be honest I wouldn't mind so as long as you were more open about it.

Why do you say I left the forum for 6 days??

IIRC you didn't log in using this account until today.

1. not true.
2. So you are monitoring MY activity?

Inputs.io still on BF silver list.

interesting. they removed his logo: https://members.bitcoinfoundation.org/current

We might have some different definitions for the word removed. Showing the logo right next to the CoinURL one, two rows above the coinbase icon, doesn't classify as removed to me.

Interesting. Could have sworn it was removed shortly after the hack. My mistake.
