4241  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: The Art of Exploiting vs the Bad Habit of Scamming on: July 13, 2020, 05:43:00 PM
...
You should read the contents of my reply. I never said it was a scam but manipulation. An exploit would be finding a glitch, but when you create it yourself it's manipulation, imo at least.
I was sharing similar ideas as the reply you linked, but with different words;
Quote
There was intent in this case to move the odds in their favour assuming both individuals were working together. It would count as market manipulation to me. An exploit would be taking advantage of an existing flaw. A scam would be to use dubious and sometimes criminal means to cheat a system.
4242  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: The Art of Exploiting vs the Bad Habit of Scamming on: July 13, 2020, 05:01:07 PM
Into what kind of category would that fall ? Exploit ? Scam ? Market manipulation ?
Sounds so much like a pump and dump scheme.
There was intent in this case to move the odds in their favour assuming both individuals were working together. It would count as market manipulation to me. An exploit would be taking advantage of an existing flaw. A scam would be to use dubious and sometimes criminal means to cheat a system.
Bookies can protect themselves with their ToS in different situations, and they make it as wide as possible to leave then enough wiggle room, so players can as well push the very limits to swing the odds to their favour. When both parties get too close to the edges, it could be outrightly unethical, but isn't a scam imo.

There is however a thin line between, scamming and manipulating and there would be diverse opinions on this.
4243  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Lockdown easing - I'm back in the cafe on: July 13, 2020, 10:26:40 AM
We are experiencing a similar situation over here, lockdown is being eased in most of the cities, even the ones that are most hit. Several sectors have been allowed to open back up and sometime last week the first commercial domestic flight in months took to the air.
There however seems to be pattern in the easing process, the government is only opening up sectors which generates revenue for it i.e, which it can tax directly such as airports, hotels etc while other sectors which are not subject to coperate taxes, but will instead require funding to safely open up, like schools have remained closed.

The coronavirus is a fairly minor virus infection - I believe it is ranked at 36 in the severity list,
As long as the health care system can stay above the situation, it can be managed, but with the rate of spread, it can easily exceed the capacity of a national health system and more people would have otherwise survived with adequate care would be left untreated. For developing nations with a poor health structure, the situation could get critical.
4244  Other / Politics & Society / Next Director-General of the WTO on: July 13, 2020, 06:58:29 AM
WTO~World Trade Organization is the body designed to promote and maintain peaceful trades between it's members, it also settles disputes and creates an enabling environment for both advanced economies and EMDEs (emerging markets and developing economies).

"The World Trade Organization (WTO) is the only global international organization dealing with the rules of trade between nations. At its heart are the WTO agreements, negotiated and signed by the bulk of the world’s trading nations and ratified in their parliaments. The goal is to ensure that trade flows as smoothly, predictably and freely as possible." source
The WTO has 164 member countries and others are seeking to join.
As economies are becoming more interconnected with increase in global trade and global financial openness the duty of the WTO has become more relevant. It's effect however has become less evident.

The current Director-General Roberto Azevêdo was elected on the 1st of September, 2013 and re-elected at the end of his first four year term in 2017. During his tenure the body achieved some success but has been relatively ineffective for some years, with growing dispute between the three major players; the U.S. EU and China and it's inability to cut down subsidies on fishing. The Appellate body of the World Trade Organization (WTOAB) which is the de facto supreme Court of the WTO has also been crippled, as at last year, it couldn't meet the minimum number of judges (3) required to preside over a case, due to blocking of appointments by the U.S.

On the 14th of May, this year, he announced that he would be stepping down from his role, a year before the end of his tenure and amidst a global crisis which is putting a major strain on world trade. This has left the body in a search for a new Director-General before their next ministerial conference which takes place next year in Kazakhstan.

The selection process includes;
• a nomination period, were governments are allowed to present candidates, this lasts for a month, after which accepted candidates are invited to meet the general council and present their mandate (15-17 July, 2020, the 2nd phase ends officially on the 7 September, 2020). The WTO then meets with other bodies to decide and select a new Director-General before the deadline (*1st September, 2020, the date has been pulled back due to the nature of this year's election and there would be an acting Director-General from this date, till a new DG is selected).

Nomination period is currently over and 8 candidates have been accepted;

What's your opinion on the candidates and who do you think is "most likely" and "best equipped" to lead the organization? And would that be the same person?
Advocates of the free market has been in opposition to the activities of the WTO for years, do you think we are better off without the body?

4246  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: The Art of Exploiting vs the Bad Habit of Scamming on: July 12, 2020, 08:51:45 AM
I would take the perspective of the gamblers in this situation. Are there any rules protecting them and their wagers?
Going through the ToS of so many gambling sites, they put in lots of leeway and wiggle room which allows them to legally protect themselves should a flaw in their system be exploited. So when such flaws are brought to light, mostly when a big win happens, they reserve the right to refuse to pay the player.
We should also consider that many players may have unintentionally played games (such as betting above the payable multiplier limit) that would have been otherwise rejected were they to have hit a huge winning due to there being a flaw, but as they didn't, there was no issue and their stakes were lost, so they were always going to lose either way.

Taking advantage of a obvious system error is no doubt unethical, but does it qualify as scamming, I don't think so, as intention cannot be judged easily.
• If I visited an ATM and it dispensed more cash that I requested and I kept the money without counting it, that should not be a scam as I wasn't aware and not in the habit of counting cash I receive from a machine.
• If I indeed counted it and still kept the money (thinking; my lucky day), this is open to discussion, but possibly an exploit.
• But if I counted it, kept the money and attempted several other times to cheat the machine, this should be outrightly fraudulent as I'm taking advantage of an obvious glitch repeatedly with intent to cheat. A scam.

Intent is important both on the part of the platform and the gambler.
• If the same machine were to be underpaying people who use it and the providers were aware but left it as most were not aware, up until a scammer comes along and exploits that flaw to their advantage, and at this point they whip out their user agreements. Have they been running a scam?
4247  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Premier League Prediction Thread (EPL) on: July 12, 2020, 08:20:36 AM
Aston Villa and Bournemouth are already relegated,
Norwich with 21 points out of 35 games are the only team that have been mathematically relegated from the league.
4248  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Premier League Prediction Thread (EPL) on: July 12, 2020, 07:55:58 AM
So many exciting fixtures to look forward to today.
Wolves welcome Everton and have to win to keep pace with the rest of the European football contenders. Both teams are lacking in squad depth and as a result players have been overworked over the past couple of weeks, with little space for experiments as we approach the decisive point of the season.
I expect a tight match, which may be decided by a moment of magic or a silly mistake. A 1:0 victory for wolves maybe.

Villa and palace have been in very poor form since the restart, having only picked up two and three points respectively. This is a very difficult match to predict as it's a must win for Villa, but their opponents really have nothing to gain or lose except a better finish. Possible draw and BTTS.

Tottenham vs Arsenal
Bournemouth vs Leicester

Three teams in the battle for European football and one chasing survival. I expect goals in both games, O 1.5?

4250  Other / Meta / Re: Hide reported posts? on: July 12, 2020, 05:29:00 AM
I'd maybe add not letting newbies lock their own threads either as soon as they're created
I suggested this on the other thread where the scammers created multiple topics across various boards and locked the threads immediately after making them to censor any reply;
A suggestion is to restrict topics from being locked until xx hours after it was made. This could be limited to brand-new/newbie accounts
This would not really affect the regular users and if they do get the answer to their query quicker than the restricted time they can report their posts to be locked by mods.
4251  Other / Meta / Re: A new group of scammers, make topics with phishing links. Please nuke them. on: July 11, 2020, 06:36:00 AM
They were reported and all four of the users has been nuked at this time.
Locked topics or not locked topics by them does not affect your report process.
It doesn't, but due to the queue of reports needing attention from the mods, it could take a while for a report to be handled, during this time the threads have already been viewed by other users. Usually, I'll reply a warning message to such posts pending when the report is handled, however due to the topics being locked that cannot be done.
The fact that the scammers are repeating the process may suggest that it's attracting some unsuspecting users.
4252  Other / Meta / Re: A new group of scammers, make topics with phishing links. Please nuke them. on: July 11, 2020, 05:06:24 AM
A new crop of accounts have surfaced sharing similar content as the recently nuked ones across several boards and also locked topics to prevent people from pointing out their scam;
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5261461.0
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5261462.0
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5261464.0
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5261465.0

This seems to be a targeted attack at new members, their accounts would eventually be nuked, but would have already been viewed by some and as the topics are locked a curious newbie could follow the link to find out more. And the cycle would be repeated again.
A suggestion is to restrict topics from being locked until xx hours after it was made. This could be limited to brand-new/newbie accounts
4253  Other / Meta / Re: Is counter feedback a good solution? on: July 11, 2020, 04:36:00 AM
Realistically, not every feedback can be scrutinized by other members, except the user chooses to draw attention to it and I wouldn't like to see multiple posts complaining about the feedback people left on them. So counter feedback may not be the best solution for a wrong negative but it can serve as a preemptive measure at least until the issue is resolved

Feedbacks are personal suggestions about a member often backed with a reference. I'm of the opinion that a negative feedback should always have a reference link attached, so people can check and determine if it was a right one (in their opinions, this would also give you an idea of who to include or ~ in your customer trust list). If more people agree that it's wrong, they can follow some of the steps listed by suchmoon above.

If it's not an isolated case and a user is giving multiple feedbacks that majority agree to be wrong then the trust system would limit how much weight their feedback carries.
4254  Other / Meta / Re: Paraphrasing/synonymize, is it ok? on: July 10, 2020, 03:54:53 PM
This user caught my eye as I frequent the economy section and it was their style of writing (centering their texts and changing the color) that attracted me.
I replied to one of his post recently, which may have prompted him/her to switch to the press board;
This board is meant for discussions on speculations on the price of bitcoin. If you want to share articles without any context you can do so in the press board, although it has a prerequisite for only notable press hits.
Bitcointalk as a whole is meant for discussions and if you're sharing external contents it's usually better to include your own perspective to encourage discussions.
The user sometimes linked the source of their post or stated that it's not their opinion, I still however considered it unethical behavior contributing very little to discussions and simply sharing (paraphrased) contents. Checking their post history first page; the user has started 13 threads and made only 7 replies (all on their thread). This indicates a lack of interest in joining forum discussions.

Winnable fixture for Watford Saturday as they take on Newcastle at home. Go Hornets!
Winnable, but would be tough, Newcastle has had a good away form over their last few matches either side of the break, but the defeat to City could put a damp to their spirits and this could favour Watford who needs as much points as possible from their next two fixtures to widen the gap between them and the bottom three. And then go swinging for the fences for the last two tough matches.
4256  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Newbies are free to choose the journey they will go on: July 09, 2020, 09:58:03 PM
As a newbies, you have to choose the journey you want to go:
- Bounty hunters
- Spammers
- Scammers
- Good members.
Spam is usually a direct result of the first; bounty hunting especially when it's done with no regard for the forum; enlisting multiple accounts and posting simply to fulfil your post count can cause a serious spam problem as is seen in some boards.
The position one takes is really down to how the forum was presented to them when they learnt about it and also how much they are willing to read and gain knowledge.
• If one is sold the idea that the forum is a gold mine for easy cash, and by joining an ICO bounty campaign one can get a token that will go ×10 when listed, they will likely focus on bounties and could get lost in those sections.
• if a user who has an interest in reading and learning is sold the same idea, they could start off as a bounty spammer, but after gaining a little knowledge about the forum and Bitcoin, they'll likely want to learn more, this will expose them to more boards and they will eventually start contributing quality content.

Forum members would likely transition through various stages. Scammers however, could be bounty hunters, spammers or even high quality posters, and are usually unrepentant.
4257  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: My hardware wallet was seized by US customs. on: July 09, 2020, 04:58:51 PM
2. The US customs didn't knew it was a hardware wallet
They most likely didn't know what it was as the content of the invoice was not specific;
I looked at the customs declaration, and it describes the content as electronic documents,
I can imagine an overzealous employee investigating the package out of curiosity and flagging it on discovery of what it contained or a dubious one at that who thought this was an early retirement plan. It's mostly safety procedure and as long as anything apart from he package is damaged, that should be fine.

4259  Economy / Reputation / Re: Bitcasino.io comes to a non disclosed agreement with a user who won 171 btc on: July 09, 2020, 05:22:31 AM
How does above info prove that LAngle specifically exploited or cheated the particular game ? Your explanation mergly proves that he had multiple accounts on your casino and was also active on other casino's, nothing much.
They do not necessarily need to prove this particular game was cheated. Having multiple accounts on their platform is against their Terms of Service, more so when you have cheated them on your previous account(s), that doesn't really count as 'nothing much', as all future accounts would be restricted.
Someone wanted for a crime can be arrested while doing something completely legal.

This kind of plateform are the reason why a lot of people are scared about cryptocurrencies. A cheater can take your money
Scams like this can also and have been run using fiat currencies. And with Fiat currencies the connection that was established between both accounts using the blockchain will take lots of time, paper work and approval to be checked as the blockchain is much more transparent.
4260  Economy / Reputation / Re: Bitcasino.io 171btc winner discussion on: July 08, 2020, 06:20:16 PM
I would also want to know how exactly the game was cheated by @LAngel, granted the user has admitted to having cheated before and this has been proven by the evidence of the Bitcoin transaction history. And taking this part of their ToS, they reserve the right to limit future accounts;
2.1.17. You have only one account with us and agree to not to open any more accounts with us

But if such flaw is exploited again without any traceable evidence on the blockchain, bitcoincasino would have a lot to do to prove it to be illegitimate. And sharing the method used would technically expose them to that exact situation, so they would likely not till the flaw is fixed.
