481  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: [WTS] Riser cables/extenders (15 total, a few different kinds) on: July 26, 2012, 03:01:17 PM
I am not so much worried about a dead cable as I can repair it if needed. Assuming the traces on the little pcbs are still in tact that is.

Have you modified the x1 connector on this one?
I actually have 5 x1 cables, 2 are in the OP, and 3 more I found just the other day. I haven't made any modifications. I got a PM offer of 6BTC for everything, but haven't heard back.
OK, stuff in OP sold for 6BTC.

The last 3 x1 to x16 cables that I found I would like to sell together to save on shipping. Make offers.

Idea: A DB of addresses that pooled funds such as MtGox can contact so they don't send to them. Lottery and SD addresses come to mind.
Actually, while I am opposed to "blacklists" and such, it would make sense for mtgox to give warning when paying to known satoshidice addresses to prevent issues like this.

I have another $1k mtgoxusd available, want to buy dwolla.

Those of you that have LastPass should take the "LastPass Security Challenge". It takes all of your stored passwords and checks to see how many times they are re-used across all your stored sites. I'm in the process of improving my score by visiting each and every stored website and changing the password from a shared one to a unique generated one. It will take a while because there are hundreds to visit. However, this hack points out the absolute reliance that most people have on email as a last form of authentication, which is a shame.

Even one of my banks has a limit of 12 character password with no symbols, and only one other bank has the option to disable email password resets.
486  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: [WTS] Riser cables/extenders (15 total, a few different kinds) on: July 26, 2012, 01:13:43 PM
The problem is, I can't be sure that all of them work, especially the x1 cables since they are thinner and more prone to breakage. That's why I'm trying to sell all of them together at a discount "as-is", because then if you get a dead cable there will be some spares to use.

So is the value of BTC going to skyrocket or what? Smiley
The difficulty will, but the value is in no way "pegged" to the difficulty. Although they have tended so far to follow each other somewhat, that doesn't guarantee anything.

Does this contain it's own network card or is everything going through the USB?
Nobody knows except BFL... Although what's the point of having a network card when you have USB?
489  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Need PSU help. PLEASE!!! on: July 26, 2012, 02:52:05 AM
Server PSUs are awesome and bulletproof and will never die, but they are also loud, require soldering, and don't usually fit in any standard consumer form factor.

5870s are TDP rated for 188 watts, so a 5850 would have to be less than that. TDP is like the absolute maximum it can go too, unless you are overclocking. So at a guess let's say a 5850 is 150 watts, x3 = 450 watts. Add a few more for the rest of the components, and I could make a recommendation for a 750 watt PSU or larger, which would allow you to run at around 80% PSU usage continuously.

I could without hesitation recommend any PC Power & Cooling model of PSU, and any Seasonic. PCP&C has a 7 year warranty, and Seasonic also rebadges some of their stuff under other names, check jonnyguru for recommendations.

If you just want something to tide you over that should last at least a year, the GX750 ought to be fine on either rig.

Unless you want to spend $5-10M in NRE, you're going with a structured ASIC process. eASIC and Alterra HardCopy are the only options here. Chips will be capable of 2GHash/s each, approximately. So, assuming BFL is using a structured ASIC process to keep NRE less than millions, they'd need 500 ASICs to generate a terahash. Unit costs are small if you produce 10,000s of ASICs; however, when your production is in the hundreds or low thousands, you're looking at $100s per unit. That terahash box has a cost base of $500K, by our estimation.

I would love to know if you have actually seriously investigated a full custom or standard cell ASIC and have actually got quotes to justify the $5-10M NRE that you mention. Is that a figure you actually priced out? Since it's apparent you won't be going that route, I'm sure there's a bunch of people here who would love to hear the quotes you've gotten for different nodes for things like the mask set, packaging, test wafers, per wafer prices, etc.
+1, although it's probably all under NDA. Sad

Having trouble here.  I burnt up a PSU because I bought a shitty bargain one and ran 3 5850's with Reaper.  I have 2 computers. One with 3x 5850.  Other 2x 5850 and one 5870.  What power supply on newegg should I buy?  COST is a HUGE factor.  Hopefully single rail/under $100 would be great for both.  Should it be 850watts+ or more?  Is a $100 target viable for a power supply that could last possibly a year litecoin mining, or bitcoin mining for at least 6 months/whenever ASICs hit?
I've got some barely-used quality PSUs available, if you want to take a look: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=92925.0

The smaller two would work great for your setup. They should last for many years.

Who's to say they haven't spent that much? With a VC investor, you can spend more than you normally would without one.

And, some of the numbers that others have presented in terms of hashing ability for a custom chip on various processes have been reasonably convincing. I still have my doubts about "USB Powered" and not needing an external brick, but meh.

Please don't use Tor for torrents. It degrades the network and makes it slow.

What if it used its own network? Would people voluntarily give up some of their bandwidth to help route traffic seeing as it would be zero-risk?
I doubt it would be zero-risk.
494  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: LargeCoin is scared of BFL on: July 25, 2012, 07:56:41 PM
Well, I might make note of something that makes a difference - they say 1Th/s, not 1.5.

Additionally, that 1 Th/s is with multiple chips in a box, and the number is unspecified. My understanding of full-custom ASIC processes is that chips are cheap to make, once the NRE is recovered. Like, REALLY cheap.
So I do believe it is possible, but I also am of the opinion that they are staking an awful lot on the outcome.

The number of chips is not particularly relevant.
What matters is the hashing power to wattage ratio.

Yes, and no wattage has been posted, so right now all we have are guesses.

Thank you guys!

I've installed Redphone and I'm thinking about TextSecure. At least I know about it now in case I ever want to use it.

I've installed Jitsi and will be getting a friend to use it too so that we can chat securely and use its voice and video features. I had previously installed the OTR plugin for Pidgin but this seems superior.

What are the best / most widely used dark routing systems currently in use? It seems to me that if bittorrent was modified to connect to only Tor Hidden Service bittorrent clients, it would be unstoppable.

498  Other / Off-topic / Re: Butterflylabs Single (Rev. 1) Makes Strange Noises... on: July 25, 2012, 07:39:58 PM
It doesn't seem to be an issue with them; I did something similar to mine and was assured that as long as the thing still worked correctly, the fan mods would not change the trade-in value, and presumably by extension the warranty.

So as long as you can plug the thing in and get the expected hash rate, they are fine with it?
Seems so, but don't use too big a fan otherwise you might cause the board voltage to sag or burn out a fan regulator.
Seems the installed fan may be a little low on quality, whats the brand ? There really are some span regarding 120 mm fans, better change.
They have been fitting various brands of fans, seems like they switch weekly. There was another topic somewhere here about fans, discussing which ones provide the best airflow while remaining silent.
499  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Choose: Walk The Plank or Keelhaul on: July 25, 2012, 07:37:48 PM
Hunted it up back in April, wasn't hard
Why does everyone say that, but then never reveal anything?
Is it normal to dox someone without them having provably committed a crime or tort?

EDIT: I should make it clear that I would support sharing relevant information among trusted investors, but I don't find it necessary to post everything publicly.
