I just saw that post, and laughed my ass off.  If satoshi had spent his entire time here posting twittbook quote pyramids he probably wouldn't have any merit either.

Here's another one of GadiGonsFula's merit complaints:

FUCK me god Sad  i have  0 merit.

5283  Economy / Scam Accusations / Bomb Threat Email demands bitcoin ransom on: December 14, 2018, 07:27:11 PM
Yesterday there was a bomb threat in the small city where I work.  I heard about another one in the slightly bigger city just north of here, and several more in San Francisco.  It turns out the threats were sent through email, mostly to organisations, schools, and businesses world wide.  Apparently there were no actual bombs found, but a lot of buildings were evacuated yesterday due to the threats.

Scammers are getting sloppy, and desperate I guess.

News article: https://www.coindesk.com/us-government-issues-advice-over-bitcoin-bomb-threat-emails

Scammers ransom address: 1LVZqNEUHnhGxZ2qgJApd3qbHWZtpMhkAo

Reported content of the email:

Hello. I write you to inform you that my recruited person has hidden a bomb (tronitrotoluene) in the building where your business is located. My recruited person assembled an explosive device according to my instructions. It can be hidden anywhere because of its small size, it can not destroy the supporting building structure, but there will be many wounded people if it explodes. My recruited person keeps the building under the control. If any strange activity, panic or cop is noticed he will power the device. I can withdraw my recruited person if you pay. You pay me $20'000 in Bitcoin and the device will not explode, but do not try to cheat -I ensure you that I will call off my man solely after 3 confirmations in blockchain.

Here is my BTC address : 1LVZqNEUHnhGxZ2qgJApd3qbHWZtpMhkAo

You must transfer bitcoins by the end of the workday. If you are late with the transaction the bomb will detonate. Nothing personal this is just a business, if I do not receive the money and the explosive device explodes, next time other companies will pay me more bitcoins, because it isnt a one-time action. For security and anonymity , I will no longer enter this email account. I check my address every 30 minutes and if I see the transaction I will order my person to get away.

If an explosion occurred and the authorities notice this email: We arent a terrorist society and do not assume liability for acts of terrorism in other places.

I have a feeling you'll be getting more of these notices.

Like 1431 more, maybe?
5285  Other / Meta / Re: [HELP] My Account is Locked on: December 13, 2018, 08:01:34 PM
I do not have a Bitcoin Sig message on my account.
I only have an ETH address on my account

You don't have to have a BTC address on your profile page.  On the 11DEC2018 you posted this address: 1L9fcBpcjbe7dTUNXw55CyazxJomEkamA6

If you can sign a message with it, follow these instructions and you'll get your account back after one of the Admin have a chance to look at your case.

[WTB] Night Vision Goggles -buy for me-

I am in the U.S and am not asking anyone to break the law. I'm just trying to see what prices people would offer to buy at so I can save some money.

Optics Planet has some of the best retail prices in the industry on almost everything they sell.  Even wholesale prices of many of their products are only slightly less.

Another thing, your first post comes off like you're begging for $12k gift.  Or, attempting to scam someone.  Just sayin'

https://www.opticsplanet.com/armasight-compact-dual-tube-51-degree-fov-night-vision-goggle-binocular.html

Preferably the most expensive option (the $11.8k ones)

This is my first post so hello everyone! If you have to order it to yourself and then ship it to me, idc. As long as they're in my hands at the end of the day I'm happy.

I don't get it.  Why can't you just order them yourself?

Probably because he's not from the US and they don't export their products out of the US.

That's what I was thinking, but if that is indeed the case the OP is asking an American to break the law.  It's not like the manufacturers of NV optics just came up with some arbitrary policy to not ship their wares overseas.  Shipping one of those optics overseas without an ITAR license is a violation of the International Traffic in Arms Regulations.

Oh yeah!  I believe it'll live up to all it's glorious expectations, without even so much as a dip, ever!  Guaranteed.
We only have to wait another 14 days!

5290  Other / Serious discussion / Re: Democracy is dead. on: December 10, 2018, 05:04:19 PM
Democracy isn't dead.  It's alive and well in California and many other states that will even allow constitutional amendments through ballot initiatives.  Some of you might think that's a good thing, but many have argued, with demonstrable evidence that it's destroying those states.

Pure democracy isn't any more practical than pure communism.  It doesn't work.  It subjugates minorities, and I'm not only talking about ethnic minorities.  I'm talking about political, ideological, and social minorities, regardless of their ethnic background.  But, obviously it can and has been used to subjugate ethnic minorities as well.

Most people have no idea what democracy really is.  They think the United States if America is a democracy, because we use a democratic process to elect representatives.  Those of you who believe that are wrong.  The USA isn't and never has been a "A Democracy."

A pure democracy is Majority Rule, and minorities be damned.  Look around you, all the people you interact with daily, the folks shopping at the supermarket, the guy pumping your gas, the girl ringing you up for a Big Mac...  do you want them deciding on public policy?  Do they have the education, insight, and forethought to really make decisions that will benefit society today and for the long run?  Might they be susceptible to the influence of a charming scammer, a despot, or a genocidal maniac?  Most people won't read the instructions on a bottle of Drain-O, let alone study the intricate legalese of a proposed initiative.

No thank you, I'll take my Constitutional Republic over a democracy any day of the week, and twice on Sunday.

The poll doesn't have a no-regulation option.

Fixed.

genome based bio weapons gonna be fun  Smiley

That's obviously the concern about allowing genetic research without regulations, in my opinion.  Not that regulations or sanctions can stop a despot from weaponizing genetics.  I mean, Britons did it in Scotland for generations.  Wink

No matter how noble the intentions of the scientists and researchers might be, someone will use the technology for nefarious purposes.

Comparing bumping threads to plagiarism is quite a reach.  Yes, both activities are against the rules, but punishment should fit the crime.
5296  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: December 07, 2018, 04:43:16 PM
Any rise in price is just noise on the way to total ruin. We're in a clear bear market down trend now.

I've been telling you guys for years. Bitcoin is dying a long death, but it is dying. No question. See you guys at sub $1000 in 2019. Officially irrelevant by 2020.

Market up? proudhon is bearish.
Market down? proudhon is bearish.

Nothing to see here, move along.  Move along.
5297  Other / Meta / Re: Legendary account banned on: December 07, 2018, 02:34:09 PM
Must be a purchased account.
It's actually not.

How do you know that? Posts made from 2013 to mid-2017 are primarily in Hardware and Mining with zero posts in French.

I agree with cryptohunter, account is either hacked or purchased. Well, he can prove us wrong by signing a message from this address:

soy, 3, 0.54, 1MNFGC5yp3JFCmuA6S1LUBoHG5bFuqTszE

Is there a point to this? Hacked or not, the account is banned meaning a plagiarist is gone from the forum.

I don’t know why the topic of conversation didn’t turn to whether copy and pasting one post is enough to ban someone or not with so much activity. But nonetheless it might prove the account has been hacked,

Are you suggesting that if you have more activity the rules shouldn't be as strictly applied?
5298  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Genetic Engineering of Humans on: December 07, 2018, 04:39:47 AM
It could be the beginning of a super-human race that will replace homo-sapiens, or it could be the beginning of the end for humans, as tampering with our genome could cause unforeseen mutations that will destroy humanity all together.
Both of these scenarios assume (with no basis whatsoever) that unmodified humans will go extinct.

I was merely painting a hypothetical, and not suggesting that the only potential outcome is unmodified humans going extinct.  Certainly, over time the possibility does now exist.  And, one can argue the basis for that assumption also exists, and is displayed all around us.  We are currently the only surviving member of the Homo genus.
5299  Other / Politics & Society / Genetic Engineering of Humans on: December 05, 2018, 07:22:51 PM
What do you folks think about Genetic Engineering of Humans?

To be honest, I'm not sure how I feel about it.  It could be the beginning of a super-human race that will replace homo-sapiens, or it could be the beginning of the end for humans, as tampering with our genome could cause unforeseen mutations that will destroy humanity all together.

I'm a believer in evolution, and in my opinion evolution need not be limited to natural selection.  An organism's own contribution to it's evolution is not only feasible, it's proven to be possible.  Up until now our biological evolution has been slowly accumulating through breeding, selection, and disease.  In the last two hundred years or so we've contributed to our own ancillary evolution, which can be cataloged through our tools: weapons, transportation, and computation.

If we are capable of modifying our biological make-up to more closely suit our lives, is it such a bad thing?

Anyway, there have been some interesting stories in the news about He Jiankui, a Chinese researcher who claims to have created two humans who were genetically engineered.  Then he disappeared...

http://www.spokesman.com/stories/2018/dec/02/marc-a-thiessen-gene-editing-is-here-its-an-enormo/

https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/he-jiankui-missing-crispr-gene-edited-babies_us_5c0641a0e4b0cd916faf700c

I'm making this a self-moderated topic because this is a broad reaching subject, and I don't care how closely it stays on-topic.
5300  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: December 05, 2018, 01:38:44 AM

Ah, a topic close to my heart!  Costco has Lagavulin 16 on sale, or at least they did last week...  Bottle's still half full!  Hard to be pesimistic with a well aged, Islay single malt so close at hand.

If'n you've never tried an Islay single malt you may want to start with a Laphroaig 10yo with a splash of distilled water.
Laphroaig is a hit or miss. I love me some good peat, but it's definitely not for everyone. It took me a while to get into too, and I just sucked it up and kept trying a dram every few days for weeks before I could really taste and smell anything other than ashtray.

That's what got me really hooked on whisky though. I was curious to see if there was really something to all the flamboyant and over the top tasting notes that you see everywhere and bought 10 bottles of different scotches to figure out if the deal is real. It is. Who would've guessed that you have to actually buckle down to "learn" tasting.

Similar story here, I was 90% through the first bottle of scotch I ever bought, Laphroag 10, before I truly started to see what it was trying to tell me through gustatory bliss.

I don't drink much either, and I'll plead the 5th on the rest (old habits die hard.)  But when I do drink, I like me some old, stinky, Islay whiskey.  Or bourbon, the old stand-by is Maker's Mark.  That shit is pretty good.
