61  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: June 21, 2017, 02:32:27 PM
My speculation is that xmr will continue its steady longer term appreciation trend, with much less significant volatility than other leading crypto (BTC, ETH).  In the long run, XMR will appreciate significantly more than BTC, as it's use cases are greater, and the current valuation is 50x lower.

Depending on your criteria, you might deem various issues as "leading crypto" but market cap per se is clearly meaningless.  Bytecoin, dash, zcash and ripple are prime examples of that meaninglessness, for distinct reasons with similar implications, i.e. in each case the cap far exceeds the float - liquidity stinks, and every "greater fool" that comes along is just burying themselves under a deeper and deeper creaking overhang.  I do not deem any of these four in particular to be in the class of "leading crypto".  I still hope for a fair community launch of a zksnark crypto (or the incorporation of zksnarks into xmr.)

ETH is definitely leading crypto, but can't be classed as a monetary asset per se.  It is also heading for a legal and social catastrophe at an ever accelerating pace.  I much prefer the tortoise-style victory to which Monero is iterating, steering far clear of the snake oil and Ponzi complexes that besmirch the very concept of crypto.  The political and governance risks of XMR seem clearly to be much less than those of either BTC or (most especially) ETH.

There exists ZenCash, ZClassic, and Hush, which are all community created Zcash forks.
I've been particularly interested in Zen. It's basically Zcash with a DAO and masternodes. As a speculator, those things interest me.

Oh boy! Dao and masternodes!!
When monroe gonna be that?
Waiting for announcement....

What do you guys think? Is this wishful thinking?
Volume is up a bit today after being really slow. Someone accumulating coins?

There is ALWAYS a rather large group here at any moment that is accumulating Monero.  And right now, these prices look like a bargain so, we'll set our bids somewhere below the current price and wait for others to dump into them.  It seems to work most of the time.

Edit: I know I've picked up a few hundred more over the last day or so.

Soon oh soon the time

Oh there are absolutely big smart money players who were very disappointed in the NYC event, as well as some middling holders who, while I might not call them true believers, have been stalwart and steadfast holders, advocates, and in some degree contributors who were sufficiently off-put to change their allocations.  I know this with top-tier probability rather than with observational certainty.

The real loss is that if the event has been better planned, more suitably advertised, and the content better curated, it could have been a watershed event in the development of Monero, as a software project, as a currency, as a protection of human rights, and as  community.  I hope that the next NYC Monero event will be better planned, further in advance, with better venue stability, a wider range of speakers, more dialogue, more topics, better food, and a 2013 Barolo (which, according to advance reports, is going to be an absolutely legendary vintage). Such an event has the potential, through Monero, of changing the world significantly for the better. A bigger after party would be nice too.

I think it would be good to organize Tokyo, Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Sao Paolo, Frankfurt, Paris, London events as well, focusing on centers of fintech, broadly distributed.

Hmm.  Barolo futures may be a correlated asset.

Noted.
The date is May 16, 2018

Regarding lack of documentation, see phishead's answer. The forum has been quite inactive since the beginning. It is currently mostly used for forum funding system proposals.
Newbie can't write reliable docs, isn't it? What does it means "forum funding system proposals"? To gather money for forum's maintenance?

The Forum Funding System is used to raise funds for development.  Much but not all is code related and it is up to the community what they will fund with their donations.

The forum itself is being redesigned and this will hopefully increase both the usefulness and traffic of the forum.

You can go to the Forum>Development>Funding Required /or Work in Progress to see some of what has been funded and work that is and has been done.

A fair amount of XMR volume has moved away from Poloniex. https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/monero/#markets

HITBTC scares me.  I had issues with withdrawals in the past.

Well HitBTC has lots of fakevolume, watch their orderbooks... they are way to small to warrant such a volume

Yes fake volume like was done on the Chinese btc exchanges until those exchanges were forced to stop.  Yeah they have 2x the vol of Polo  Roll Eyes

Others have reported issues with HitBTC.

May I suggest staying away from this scam site.

May 24th at 6 PM, southwest of Central Park:
 https://www.eventbrite.com/e/new-york-monero-symposium-tickets-34494281324
This event will be of special interest to the mathematically inclined, buyers in size, activists, entrepreneurs, and policy wonks. Meet the future global elite (and a few of the hidden current). Read the linked description for a bit more detail.

A suitable after-party venue on the West side of Manhattan is hereby solicited.

A dedicated wallet for those that prefer to pay directly with Monero is now set up.  The suggested donation is 1 xmr.  Please PM me if you want to use this method.

Also nobody should be concerned about the breadbox size limit Shocked

>$100 USD does not sound that crazy for XMR anymore.

What always sounded crazy was $0.50

Recently I have found myself driving more slowly

Maybe somebody knows when they are planning website redesign?

It is currently being worked on and I think people will like it  Smiley
71  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: May 08, 2017, 06:23:12 PM
Polo down?  Huh

e: holy shit that sell.. would've happily bought some of that.

I think nobody got any of that unless they already had the net out to catch it when it fell.  I tried, but polo just locked up on me.
It's weird how I often seem to watch these things unfold.  I don't spend that much time watching charts.  (Do I?  Tongue )

Yes funny business seems to happen repeatly when exchanges have "issues".  Kraken had problems at the same time as Polo and on polo many coins had selloffs at the same time as Monero.

It also seems that after alts rise there is a selloff and then bct rises.  It happened this time.  Cool

Why didn't this exist 20 years ago. Smiley

Oh, man... don't I know it.

In the early 90's to just past Y2K I ran a software development business (Windows utility tool) and while I did everything *but* the actual coding (contracted that out to overseas cheaper devs) it was still a high-energy pursuit -- up all day doing tech support and shipping disks etc then up all night doing testing, bug reports for the devs, UI design, help file code, website, etc etc etc

Cokes & Snickers to keep going, grab an hour or two of sleep under the desk from maybe 6am to 9am, then back at it day after day month after month... yikes, that's totally a young man's game and I could never handle it again nowadays... LOL

Wish I could though... contributing more to the crypto economy now would be great if only I had the energy.

Best I can do now I guess is just BUY and HODL as much as I can afford Wink

I hear ya! I designed and oversaw the Y2k response for Cherry Semiconductor (acquired by ON during that period) and it was amusing that everyone said "Damn what was all the fuss about we didn't have any problems" completely missing the point that there were no issues do to our hard work. Smiley

http://www.onsemi.com/PowerSolutions/newsItem.do?article=66

So what's the deal on the bitcoin forkokalypse and coinbase adoption??? It's messing with my plans for the next six months, LOL.

I.e.:Huge price pump (BTC'ers move their money to XMR), take money off the table, price subsides, buy back in bigger, wait for the September hard fork, profit big time (and keep hodling a chunk... Grin)

I have no clue atm. Have not had the time to watch the market.

I think you meant to say, due to our hard work.

Just catching up here after a few months away.  It seems that your posting has improved a bit but you still suck at accumulating.  Tongue

type "seed" into that and hit send, and it should show your seed.

Code:
[12:45:53] > seed
[12:45:53] [wallet 47W9Eo]: unknown command: seed

 Cry

Ok let me summarize the situation. I can open my wallet only with Monero Client v0.22.0 but the client is outdated. So, I can't do anything with this client except looking at my outdated balance. The problem is, when  I move my .keys, other client ask me for a password. I don't have password or mnemonic (this feature wasn't developped yet). When I created my wallet, Monero Client v0.22.0 never asked for a password.

I think I have 2 possibilites :
- Rebuild the client to make it work again and transfert my balance to another wallet. But I'm not a developper, this looks like impossible to me.  Undecided
- Find a way to create a passphrase/password for my wallet and then I would be able to open it with any client. Maybe with a command line, I don't know.

Any ideas ?  Grin

Thanks for trying to help me guys, have a nice day!

May I suggest you go on IRC and ask a trusted dev for help.  It probably will entail giving them your wallet.  If so, make sure you know who you are giving it to and that it is actually them.

76  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: January 11, 2017, 12:19:40 PM
is crypto done??  Huh

In China it looks like that. On previous corrections it took several gradual corrections to break critical support, now it's like hot knife through butter... Huh

But didnt you say a dump to 660$ was about to happen these days? If so its expected market behaviour

Not so sudden, this is abnormal.

Nothing is abnormal about this. Corrective wave. Bitcoin isn't dead. Wake up

Corrective wave predicted the latest China bans btc?

Edit: posted before your post just above, lol

monero.xminingpool.com/ is reliable to mine in? or what is the best pool with lowest fee (1% or less) that allows high ping from america or has low ping for america

I would definitely stay away from that xminingpool.

As far as ping you can check for yourself.

2 pools in the US are moneroworld.com and monerohash.com and both list some other pools.  There is also an incomplete list on the first page of this thread.
the minmum withdrawl for one of those is 1XMR I guess if there is any with a modifiable withdrawl amount

Moneroworld recently changed their payout from 1 to 0.3 so it's now the same as monerohash.  Most pools are 0.5 but you can easily check the particulars of each pool on their sites.

The network HR is now at an ATH of well over 50MH/s and will only increase from here.

Yes the hardfork is at block 1220516 and because of the mining difficulty changing rapidly at times over the last couple of months, the estimated time for the hardfork has changed and is now early on the 10th.
