You could read about it on wiki https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Bitcoin#Block-chain_and_ConfirmationsIn practical term it's a record of all the transactions that occurred and your client can only participate in the network if it's downloaded all of it. Currently it's block 123335 and is increasing ~every 10mins edit: oh, and it means that the very first time you start your bitcoin client it may take a little while before you can use it.

venom,
Is your blockchain up to date? If it's not the right balance should appear once all blocks are downloaded. If it is and you still can't see your balance, try starting bitcoin with -rescan switch.
Bitcoin transactions are recorded on the network. wallet.dat is where your keys are held

Hello fellow miners. So today I received my 5870 and tried several miners. Currently I am running on win7 32bit. The only one that doesn't crash my computer is Diablo miner and I'm getting ~300MHash/s. I assume the problem is with my power supply, so I ordered a new, more powerful, one. With other miners at stock card setting except increased fan speed, I get 350-370. I'm a bit reluctant overclocking. Well we'll see. If all goes well, I think I'll be getting few more cards Already got 0.05 BTC It used to take me around 12 hours with my other 4 computers using CPUs. bitcoin2cash I run a small company fixing computers from home and the owner of the place knows that I have to run 5-10 computers everyday. As a matter of fact I just had a glance at my watt meter and the change in readings barely changed I like any beer

Thanks for the answers guys. What I meant buy the best miner was the software. We already bought 5870 and it should be with me tomorrow. gmaxwell, our logic that evening might have been a little flawed - I admit Nevertheless, it's a start to my new societybitcoin2cash, I am renting an apartment and paying a fixed price all bills included.

I noticed similar behavior. You have to be patient - on my computer win7 32bit it takes 30s-1m from the click to start the program to gui appearing. Try starting it from start menu - there should be a shortcut.

My friend and I were enjoying beer when suddenly it dawned on us - we could have beer for free every day for the rest of our lives. So we bought this: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-147-XF&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1711Anyways, my questions are: 1. 32bit is windows or linux better? (xp/vista/7/ubuntu/centos/other?) 2. What is currently the best miner. Electricity is free so we are looking for the fastest miner. 3. What are the best setting for it. edit: it's going to be a dedicated miner 4. Is it worth overclocking? How big is the risk of damaging the card? Does it invalidate warranty? I tried searching for answers but there are millions of post contradicting each other and I know that miners get updated frequently so they probably out of date too, hence this thread. If you could post what speed you're getting with what settings, that be cool too. Thanks

The most obvious benefit is that it would allow your organization to receive small donations online without the sender needing to pay transaction fees. The only infrastructure on your end that would be needed is to run the bitcoin client in order to generate an address for donors to send to and keeping the wallet that has access to that address secure.
Even that is unnecessary. Anyone can use mybitcoin.com eWallet.

Slowpok3, freenode is an irc network http://freenode.net/. You can download irc client and connect to it. Detailed explanation on how to do it is on that page. If you have any problems or want to know more about it feel free to ask here or pm me. I can walk you through the process

Respond to: Well as someone that doesn't understand bitcoin, how do you control the value of the currency to say, guard against inflation? What are these "counterfeiting privileges to the banksters"? Do you mean the Federal Reserve? This bank serves a very important purpose, and the power it has to regulate the dollar has saved our asses before. And how does a new currency prevent "no more austerity measures for the ppl of the world". Please explain for my benefit. There is no drama here. I want to learn. He's either stupid or lives in another universe where tax payers haven't bailed out banks for the second time recently.

and the question is where do all the blocks, coins take value from ?
Silk Road

Once blockchain is up to date, you'll see your balance.
Regarding connections, your port forwarding obviously is not working. I'd suggest disabling manual port forwarding and enabling it in the bitcoin client. You can find it in Settings>>Options>> check "Map port using UPnP"

I'm not an expert on encryption, but if someone sees that there is a wallet.7z (or what not) file in your drop box, that is a good indication that there are BitCoins to be had. If someone thinks there are enough BTC in the wallet, they may use violence to extract your password. What if you merged it into a picture and then saved it to your DropBox? You could also post it across the web so if your DropBox account is hacked or you accidentally delete the contents of the DropBox, you could still extract it from the web. Better yet, put it in a BDSM picture and drop it to rapid share or some such service. Gota start being totally paranoid as the value of BTC keeps increasing. http://www.truecrypt.org/docs/?s=plausible-deniabilityPlus you can name your file whatever you like e.g myporn.avi
