6661  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The Royal Canadian Mint just announced a new alternative to BitCoin on: April 14, 2012, 04:13:00 AM
If they know who and where you bought your bitcoins from does it matter if bitcoin itself is anonymous? Once bitcoin leaves the closed ecosytem they can track it at the exit and entry points like they can do with tor.
Bitcoin is not a network. Sure, networks can be used to trace some Bitcoin transactions at entry points. Exit points are another matter, and by the time the entry point is traced, it could be long gone. Exit points can be addresses never registered anywhere online.

Would you mind expanding upon this, technically speaking, it's not clear what you mean for a casual user I don't think.
Here's the thing: just because Bitcoin is decentralized like bittorrent, it's not a network like that. A bitcoin transaction is not like downloading files. Normally you can trace file transfers by their origin and who is connected to the file by their IP address. With Bitcoin, there is only one file. It is the block chain, and nearly every bitcoin user has a copy.

To create a transaction requires only the sender to connect to the internet. The recipient of the transaction is merely a bitcoin address that gets added to the block chain by the sender. The recipient only needs to go online when he becomes a sender.

I'm oversimplifying this statement for clarity. The point being that Bitcoin can be very private and even anonymous, though I am advocating neither.

Could someone please tell me why tens of thousands of people who practice payola aren't fully on board?

~Bruno~

I thought about bolding that. You read my mind.
6663  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Mint Chip Technical Details on: April 13, 2012, 01:03:44 PM
MintChip has a poor security scheme and will be counterfeited. It will probably have high fees from brokers. It will have limited use, what can you buy for ten bucks? It is vaporware and is probably a FUD against what we have planned for Bitcoin.

The list of negatives for MintChip go on and on. At least it will be good for buying Bitcoin.

On a side note; it looks like Assange's new show on RT is imminent.
6665  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Bounty proposal for a Bitcoin-based email to fight spam. on: April 13, 2012, 03:33:43 AM
Email servers are already monetized for the most part. The free ones have advertising and that's partly why they work so well for now (for some). I just have a feeling that even email will one day become decentralized through agents.

I don't have a problem with fake-it-til-you-make-it attitude, but it takes tenacity and results. At least the website looks good so far. Good onya mate!

They'd be better off putting that $50K into an FPGA mining rig and joining the party. Canada could even go GPU because they can use the heat.

There is a bitcoin with an entity controlling more than 51%. Its called "mintchip" Cheesy
There is a bitcoin with proof-of-stake. It's called "mintchip"  Cheesy
6670  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The Royal Canadian Mint just announced a new alternative to BitCoin on: April 13, 2012, 01:35:38 AM
By chance would this "mintchip" be embedded in the back of your hand ?

If they destroy cash and the only way you can pay for things is by using this chip it becomes a distopian night mare where they can stop you spending money on what you want and instead make you spend it on things they "allow". Say goodbye to buying things the government doesnt agree with Smiley

Bingo.

Thank goodness Bitcoin was created and will grow in adoption before the governments were able to implement purely digital and tracked money. Humanity dogged a bullet there.
Think of Mint Chip as free advertising for Bitcoin.
6671  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: MintChip mentioned on theblaze.com on: April 13, 2012, 01:15:05 AM
MintChip is the best thing to happen to cryptocurrencies. Bitcoin is MintChip on atomic-rocket-powered-steroids.

6673  Economy / Speculation / Re: Investing/benefitting from MintChip on: April 12, 2012, 11:57:09 PM
MintChip being soon released with all that media attention it already has and a strong backer, the CAD(-government),
So far MintChip is vaporware. Given that it is announced by a government, it is not only vaporware, but if it is ever released, it will be long outdated by Bitcoin.

Stupid question, but which side is heads, again?
Which side do you think it is?  Tongue

OK, you got me! I'll admit I have no idea which side heads is. Doesn't it depend on the current difficulty? Or network hashrate? Or something?
I suppose the analogy could be extended to such things, or even trading price. But then we would be speculating and that is yet another coin toss.

Once mints and central banks around the world start unveiling similar portable digital wallets, and developers swiftly move in to ensure that transactions can be done anonymously, the Bitcoin experiment will end.

I find it curious as to why an economist thinks or cares about the "end" of Bitcoin. He clearly doesn't even begin to understand that these technologies he describes are insignificant compared to Bitcoin's capabilities.

6677  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why not just start a Bitcoin2 parallel to Bitcoin? on: April 12, 2012, 02:59:53 AM
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery? And a form of marketing?

-MarkM-

The best place to build a fast food franchise has always been near a McDonald's.

I'm thinking even beyond this. Somebody else had the idea with coiledcoin, but really this needs to be a concerted effort by the Bitcoin community in order to keep party poopers from pissing in the punch bowl. Think about this. If anyone has reservations about getting into mining and then not only have a new opportunity to get in early, but also it will have a high difficulty right from the beginning, along with a strong network security. Their investment would be safe, and they would also probably choose to merge mine Bitcoin as well just because they can. Win-win.
6678  Economy / Speculation / Re: Hold Your Horses, this Game ain't even started yet! on: April 12, 2012, 02:37:09 AM
Bitcoin is not yet a very good store of value yet. It will take development and time before people start having faith in the technology. OTOH, internet time tends to run much faster than for most other types of new inventions.
6679  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why not just start a Bitcoin2 parallel to Bitcoin? on: April 12, 2012, 01:32:09 AM
I'm unlocking this thread to make another argument. Instead of thinking of Bitcoin2 as an alternate blockchain, think of it as time-shifted Bitcoin. The reason I think this might be a good idea, is because it is usually one of the first things that comes to people's mind when they first hear about Bitcoin. Another thing that comes to mind is that it is inevitable that others will always want to start their own crypto currency. Why not just anticipate this and simply release a new blockchain every time the blockchain halves. This way each generation becomes a new "crypto element" to trade. Bitcoin is gold, Bitcoin2 is silver, etc. If they are merge mined, they should all have similar attack resistance.

Again, this may seem like a dumb idea, but it creates a competing currency to our own Bitcoin investment. Believe me, I do have skin in the game and think this may be one of the best things we can do. Creating our own competition ensures that the original Bitcoin will be the gold standard.
