Well there's nothing we can do about that but I'm sure word will spread pretty quick and many users will be reappearing to try claim their accounts back. Most people who got banned are probably still here just on alts so I'm they'll see it. Tell your friend he can appeal if he wants. I'm not sure what you're complaining about here though. Would you rather us not issue sig bans and just leave everyone permanently banned?

No, I agree with the banning. I have an issue with digging up posts from 4 and 5 years ago, hitting people who are not monetizing their sig. You could have hit him with sig ban and he never would have cared.
Or given a 90 day vacation from the forum with a stern warning. Or nuked the posts from 2014.

They can appeal to mods or admins in private if they feel like they can't make their claim publicly.

Discussed that with him. Not interested in anyone knowing who he is IRL.
Not you, not theymos, not anyone. Only reason I know is because I have known him for 30+ 40+ (crap I'm old) years. And he is not real happy with the fact that I know his forum use or the fact that I am talking about it here. But, I think this discussion needs to exist.

The other issue would be that since he has almost no merit and a lower post count it's going to be tough to make a good defense.

Yes, it's a very rare 1 off case, but it's still there. And if I know 1 person who had it happen, I will bet you just about any amount there is at least one more.
Possibly they have had an issue with another forum member and this was a push they needed to leave.
Does their SO think they spend too much time on here and it's an internal excuse to leave?
Did they cash out 18 months ago when BTC was at $20k and just don't care as much?

Could they appeal? yes.
Do they want to? possibly.
Will they because of external factors? perhaps not, or at least not now.

As I said, spamming & plagiarizing now. You're out of here. Once it's over 1500 days old and has not been done since? Temp ban with stern warning or something.

Just my view, take it as you will.

If you are aware of anyone who just “walks away” and you think they should be allowed to return, you should encourage them to appeal their ban with reasons to why returning would benefit the forum.

I really did not want to go down this road, so I will leave it at this:
They were banned for plagiarism for several things for several years, from many places. The issue is that it was *their* work. Proving that would reveal:

1) Their real name.
2) Their real job.
3) 90% of their home address, 99.9999% of their work address.
4) Where they went to school.

So, he walks away.

His choice. Not going to get into it.

I really did not want to get into this, but I do think the situation as of now is getting out of hand.
We have bots posting tons of garbage getting banned, BUT good / legit users getting a smackdown on something they did years ago. And some good users are NOT COMING BACK.

Users can appeal. If we feel that they're a net positive and it was for something that happened years ago then a sig ban will likely be issued. Several have already been done today and many more will likely come.

The problem is that they some are not appealing. I know 1 user IRL that just walked away.
Now there were other factors involved, but this was the final push.
*That* is part of the issue. He might be back, might not. You can now find him spending a lot of time on an ieee board.

For every lovesmayfamilis that got their perma ban reduced how many people just say screw it and walk away?

The other issue is, we are all human with different opinions. Where do you draw the line on "is this plagiarism"

A post from ME just over 5 years ago:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=49417.msg6582407#msg6582407

Technically everything after "Still love this error list from the old days (the 5th one down is my favorite) you could blow your hardware with bad code:" line
Are copy / paste from other sources. Was I supposed to put them in quotes? It's very obvious that it's not my work but is that worth a perma-ban? If it is I will leave quietly.

But then I should have good company as I KNOW other people who are well liked, do a lot of good for the board also have done similar.
I know of at least 2 that both have 10K+ posts and 3k+ merit that have taken a paragraph from somewhere and posted but not quoted it, more then once.
How do I know? It was my paragraph from someplace other than here.
Both are probably 3 or 4 years ago but it's there. It wan innocent at the time and it's innocent now but there has to be A LINE THAT ONCE ANYONE CROSSES IT IS THE SAME.

Picking on Vod who I both like and and has done a TON of good for the forum [way more then most other people], if he did something back in 2012 that is worthy of a plagiarism perma ban does he get it?
If he does, I hate to say it that's just stupid. If he starts TODAY and does it a few times, then fine he is outta here.

Suchmoon is another one. Do we look the other way for something small that was done in 2014? I think yes, even 2 or 3 something smalls. Too much good comes from that account. Starts today posting multiple unquoted quotes from Forbes. See ya.

But there needs to be a line that everyone can see.

Just my view.

6686  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin Full node and LN into RPi 3 on: May 15, 2019, 11:22:03 AM
Why don't you sync with the chain on your PC? The processing power of Pi restricts the speed of sync and this might be also a workaround for your problem.

I want to test all the process in a weak environment to tune it Smiley

Some thoughts:

The question becomes then how weak an environment do you want?

You are using an external drive, but you can get 512GB good fast name brand SD cards for ~$125 USD (Samsung / Sandisk / PNY) you can get off brand ones that are still OK for less. But their performance sucks.

You are using an external drive, which is good. BUT are you using a 5400 RPM or a 7200 RPM or a SSD?

Setting up the swap space and configuring node are going to be ALMOST the same process, BUT not 100% the same. You are going to get different answers in what is going to get you the best way to do it depending on what else you have. With a good fast SD & SSD you can use more swap with a smaller performance hit to other I/O  operations then with a generic slow SD and 5400 RPM drive.

And don't get me started on USB -> SATA adapter quality & speed.

metalmusiccoin,
Do you have access to the original domains? If not do you have the HTML / CSS from the site.
We can always get another domain and you can edit the 1st post.

Other than that getting the QT files to people is a pain,

1) I love it
2) I want them all and will bid like mad to get them.

Biggest issue I see is the "value" of certain cards is going to vary based on the card. I would think that you are going to have a TON more people bidding on the Ace of Spades then you are going to have bidding on the 7 of clubs. Just my view, probably does not matter much but it's something to think about.

6693  Economy / Goods / WTS 12 sheet bundle of Revlar Waterproof Paper Great for Paper Wallets $25 on: May 11, 2019, 12:25:11 PM
https://relyco.com/products/durable-papers/revlar-waterproof-paper/
Great for printing paper wallets since you really have to work to damage it.

FOR LASER PRINT ONLY. IF YOU USE AN INKJET YOU WILL HAVE A BLURRY MESS.

8.5" x 11" white.

I have sold some of this before and now have another small lot to sell:
1 x 12 sheet bundle $25.00 each shipped US
1 x 12 sheet bundle $50.00 each shipped anyplace else.

They are from 2 different runs from Relyco to most people they will look the same.
--> To an artist there might be some VERY VERY slight differences. <--
*I* can't tell one pile from the other but I want to be up front that there might be subtle differences.

If you have any questions, please ask.

Payment for these only to:
14omg4wFTmbQrNXtFL7f4sLfSpF6Pif4P7
OR
bc1qun6thhj2th9aac4r0057gxnrkg0lw22xa7wxzx

To answer some questions that have come up over the last few times I have sold it:
Q: Am I cheap at this price?
A: It depends, you can get 100+ count boxes of it for less per page. But for smaller amounts (like this) I am about average or even a bit cheaper.

Q: Why do you have it?
A: Contacts / paperwork that need to be kept around a while. It's kind of a side job I fell into years ago.
    Tell a lawyer it's $8300 to fix his BMW they don't care.
    Tell the same lawyer they have to spend $650 on a color laser printer (that they get to keep) and $85 for some really nice paper to print out a settlement that is going to            net them $125,000+ and they freak. So I do it for them. For a fee :-)

Q: Why don't you keep it all and just use it for the next print run?
A: Because the next print run might be tomorrow, or it might October 2020. I think I did 2 print runs in 2017 and 3 in 2018. It's just the nature of the business.

Q: Why is shipping out of the US so expensive?
A: Because I have to actually go to the Post Office during the work day, wait on line and pay. I can ship to the US without leaving my desk.

Q: Why is this a moderated thread?
A: Because the last few times I posted it people veered off into many discussions.

6695  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Recurring, automatic Payments with Qt Wallet? on: May 10, 2019, 04:11:35 PM
There was a thread a few days ago about scheduling payments:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5140716.0

Same basic theory applies here.

Also if you have any programming skills, it would be even easier. I threw together a php script after thinking about that topic that does it.
You need PHP & cron (or any scheduler) and that's it. It's unsecured and buggy but if I can do it, anyone with any real php skills can probably do something that does not suck.

6698  Economy / Goods / Re: [WTS] PaperLedger - Open source custom made crypto price ticker with alarms on: May 09, 2019, 03:15:14 PM
So, it's been 2 weeks or so. No more crashing / so the new firmware seems to have fixed it.
Still has the line. Anyone else seeing it?

-Dave

Good to know that the first situation seems to be addressed.

In regards to the line, can you please send the following payload to the device:
Code:
[
  {
    "type": "fill",
    "color": 1
  },
  {
    "type": "rectangle",
    "x": 0,
    "y": 0,
    "w": 296,
    "h": 128,
    "filled": 1,
    "color": 0
  }
]

The screen should turn all black and will be easier to check for "missing lines", not to be confused with the normal artefacts that caused by how ePaper displays work.

Yes, it's there, it looks like it's getting worse Sad
With the screen all black screen with my phone camera you can't see any of the missing pixels but you can see more missing here.
Unless it's May C9 2019.

I will pull the back off later and see if putting some pressure on the corner fixes it. I fixed a 1st gen kindle that way once.....

Thanks,
Dave

6699  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: bitcoin core full node keeps crashing after power failure on: May 09, 2019, 02:03:19 PM
Agree with ETFbitcoin, that looks to be a SD card slowly going bad.

Why it worked better in the RPi3 vs the 2 I can only guess but I have seen something similar here even among the same model pi.
Keeps crashing in one, put it in another and it works fine for a bit then starts crashing again. I have never seen it make it 3+ days however. A day or two then the problem came back.

I would get a small powered USB drive and call it a day.
I know WD has discontinued the pidrive but you should be able to get one on the secondary market, or something similar.
