681  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Time for some good news, BTC Userbase (Full Nodes) grows again. on: October 11, 2012, 09:43:51 PM
Wow this is pretty excellent news. The reason this had been falling forever was the macro trend of users switching primarily to e-wallets, and I doubt that trend will stop. So for the standard client number to be rising -despite- this macro trend is extremely positive.

Spend them on what? There's nothing other than drugs to spend them on.

This is a very silly statement.

I've spent probably $10k worth of Bitcoins over the past year and a half. Not once have I bought drugs.

It's not all that silly.

evoorhees has purchased very geek centric services I suspect. Bitcoin being geek centric currency, it wasn't hard to find a willing seller of geek services.

But, your average joe... what is he going to buy? Computer parts? probably not.. Speculation investments? probably not.... Drugs... More likely than not.

Yes, the OP claim was silly, because it stated that the ONLY reason to use BTC is for illegal uses. I then countered with the point that I've bought services from people which were not illegal (or anything close to it). Unless I am lying, this invalidates the OP's point completely. Perhaps he could change his statement to say a large use is for illegal items, but saying the "only use" is hyperbole BS.

And the claim has NOT been made that BTC is currently useful for the "average joe".  It is not useful for him... today. Just as the internet was not useful to the average joe in 1995.

Spend them on what? There's nothing other than drugs to spend them on.  If you want to buy literally anything else (and drugs too), you'll find EUR and USD absolutely perfect for your needs.

This is a very silly statement.

I've spent probably $10k worth of Bitcoins over the past year and a half. Not once have I bought drugs. Most of this has been spent paying other individuals for various things (typically freelance contractor work from people in other countries). I find Bitcoin amazing useful for this.

I'm sorry that you have not found a way to use a frictionless international payment system to your benefit other than to speculate on price movements. But if you have as many bitcoins as you claim, I suggest you dig a bit deeper into the utility of this technology instead of fostering this notion that the only things people use it for are drugs.

Though the Bitcoin equities world is in a bit of chaos right now regarding GLBSE, here's a bit of good news... the new site is up and running at the live test URL:

http://src.satoshidice.com/rev2/

I'd love any feedback! We'll put this at SatoshiDice.com in a couple days.

I'd be very grateful to anyone who checks out this new design and provides feedback (either technical issues or suggestions or any kind of comments).

I sent you a PM with a bunch of comments a couple of weeks ago and received no response.  Not sure if you got it.

There's an issue with the live display of big losses:

* the amounts displayed are obviously too big
* the text doesn't fit in the box

Ah thanks Dooglus!

Yes I did receive that message and many of those suggestions will be included. I really appreciate the feedback Smiley
688  Economy / Securities / Re: The reasons why Bitcoin securities can’t be regulated by the SEC on: October 06, 2012, 08:12:21 PM
I find this relatively, though not entirely, compelling.

Indeed it is hard for me to argue that Bitcoin is -not- a game... for any number of people involved in Bitcoin may consider it a game and how can one argue with them? The issue of title is also very interesting. Does anyone actually own bitcoins? Is possession of something all that is required to prove title? And if so, Bitcoins aren't really possessed are they... it's the keys which are possessed.

All very confusing. I wish the government would just leave this system alone.

Regarding the GLBSE mess, we'll need to wait and see how things play out. Ludvig (the passthrough operator) has said he plans to honor the contracts obviously, but we'll need GLBSE to provide him the database of owners. Ludvig is a great guy and I'll try to work with him wherever possible to take care of the GLBSE passthrough owners. I'll post more here when I know more.

Great news, the new SatoshiDICE site is now ready for some testing!!

http://src.satoshidice.com/rev2/

There is now live-feed data coming through. I'd be very grateful to anyone who checks out this new design and provides feedback (either technical issues or suggestions or any kind of comments).

After some feedback and after we've watched performance, we'll put this on the normal SatoshiDice.com domain.

Cheers!

Once BitInstant's debit card comes out, it'll be LOTS easier to approach the entire camgirl community. When they have an easy way to cash out, they'll jump on board.

Upon first hearing about Bitcoin from a Facebook post in May 2011, I thought it was the silliest thing ever. Made-up pretend internet money?? Pssh. Lame.

Then I took about 30 minutes to learn about it.

Then I realized it was one of the most brilliant inventions mankind has ever created.

Then I quit every project I was working on, became utterly obsessed, and have been addicted since. My entire life is now immersed in Bitcoin and it's been the most fulfilling pursuit I've experienced. And things are just getting started...

699  Economy / Securities / Re: Which assets are worth investing in? on: October 02, 2012, 06:18:48 PM
None, atm in my opinion.
GLBSE makes it way to easy to scam.  Just keep the bitcoins right now.
The risk is to high, if it is a scam, you loose everything.  If it's not a scam but somehow they lose your money, you loose.
If it's an asset that was based on a scam, you loose.

Until the GLBSE is reinvented in a way that makes it more professional, I'm sitting on my coins!

The SatoshiDICE asset (S.DICE on MPEX and GSDPT on GLBSE) is not a scam, I assure you. The source of profit is very straightforward. No lofty promises, just a reasonable return on the asset. The risks are very well understood (whether the site will grow or shrink in popularity) and all accounting is fully transparent (provably so, using the blockchain betting analysis).
700  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: So how on earth am I supposed to get bitcoins in the UK? on: October 02, 2012, 05:15:52 PM
For Bitcoin in the UK, BitInstant just released an online bank transfer system. This has not been publicly announced yet, but it works, and is very fast.

On BitInstant.com, select your UK flag (You can see many other countries are available for this as well), then select Online Bank Transfer and go through the process. You can have the funds converted automatically into BTC and sent to your Bitcoin account, so you don't even need to bother with any exchanges. Fee is 3.49% if over $100 worth, and 3.99% if under.

EDIT: note that these bank transfer payments are nearly instant (matter of minutes). It does not take 1-3 days like most bank transfers. It's pretty baller, actually Wink
