As part of MintChip's PR campaign, they're asking people what uses they might have for a digital currency like MintChip (it's actually not a digital currency, just a digital method for transferring state fiat currency). Right now, "Buying Bitcoins" is the leading suggestion. I encourage everyone to vote! And actually, if MintChip is truly irreversable, then it will be an excellent way to buy Bitcoin (maybe the best?). http://ideas.mintchipchallenge.com/submissions/6739-a-digital-currency-can-be-used-for-purchasing-bitcoinUPDATE Sept 24:Today the winners were announce. The site now shows any suggestions in the "Top 10" with a little crown, and these are the winners. However, the Bitcoin option, which BY FAR won the votes, is not included in this Top 10. In other words, they blatantly lied about the results, and Bitcoin is nowhere to be seen, despite having more than 3x as many votes as the second place option. Pretty amazed! UPDATE: We just had to blog about this!!

Matthew - great post my man.
What you describe about the change from troll to purpose-driven enthusiast is something I've witnessed in you as well and can verify it. You were someone who was not starry-eyed about Bitcoin in the least when you first stumbled upon it, and few people could tell if you actually even cared about the currency at all. This gave you a certain critical eye and objective understanding of the culture surrounding Bitcoin, and from this you've grown into a very respectable contributor to this wild project.
I've enjoyed our discussions and consider you one of the most valuable members of the community, for a number of reasons. I'm very glad you've come to see the tremendous importance of this project and I know the project is advanced by your efforts.
Now hurry the fuck up with the magazine because we want to read it!!!

Got it also, from support@okpay.com. The email wording made it sound like someone who was pissed about the account being frozen, but it's very possible it was frozen for legitimate reasons. And definitely hacking their email server is not cool... so I'd reserve judgement either way in this case.

Just a friendly FYI to anyone building projects in this space... MyFreeCams brings in hundreds of thousands of dollars PER DAY, as site revenue after paying the models.
Someone need only build a bitcoin-based site, pay the models 90% instead of 50-60% of revenue, and clean house.

Of all the worthy causes to donate BTC to, I wouldn't touch this one with a ten-foot pole.

We have once again lowered our rates. I am announcing it on the forum first to give you all the advantage. The site still shows: • Buying Exchange Rate $0 - $499 - 6% - $5 minimum $500 - $999 - 5% $1000+ - 4 % • Selling Exchange Rate $0 - $499 - 6% - $5 minimum $500 - $999 - 5% $1000+ - 4 % Are these the lower rates?

I bought the 2 volume Hardcover copy of his collected works. One of the few books I read over and over.
Why? I have them all on Kindle, and it didn't cost me a dime. I have those books in hardcover also. They sit prominently on my mantle, and bring me joy every time I see them. That's why

I think you guys forget the position that Gox is in. Any anti-Bitcoin policy or initiative from any government will be directed at MtGox, they will be attacked.
Because of this, and because they are extremely important (though not crucial), for the Bitcoin marketplace, they've made the wise decision to be extra careful about AML and KYC policies. This means they will seem draconian, and it will be annoying.
I'd advise you to think strategically, if we want Bitcoin to set its roots deep across the world, then it needs to grow and sustain itself for as long as possible before the dark statist forces attack it. The best way to ensure this, is for those companies which are more visible in Bitcoinland to "play it safe" and "follow the rules." It keeps the heat off, and allows Bitcoin to get stronger and stronger.
Think of it this way... them accommodating the state now affords the rest of us the opportunity to avoid bowing down later.
Annoying yes, necessary yes. Use another exchange if needed.

More and more scientific evidence seems to show us that cooperation tends to get one a better life than cut-throat competition.
Free market competition is not "cut-throat." Nobody's throat is cut. Market competition, in fact, is nothing but unrestricted cooperation. Because not every relationship/arrangement makes sense to cooperate on (ie - no reason for you to fly to my house to help me organize my bookshelf right now), it leads to clusters of cooperating agents (like companies) who then compete for scarce resources such as time, food, and bitcoins. Thus, an open market place is pure unadulterated cooperation - it is the natural limit and expression of cooperation among individuals, and competition necessarily results from this spontaneous cooperation. So long as nobody's throat is actually being cut, it should be regarded as the proper way for elegant and productive beings to interact socially.

So a new currency with a late start and no advantages. I think I will keep my Bitcoin1. There is a forum for alternate currencies though, and many have tried. Most aren't worth much.
Technically it's not an alternate currency and requires no development discussion. It is exactly the same as Bitcoin in every way except for the firstbits. What value is there in this second currency?

Don't waste your time explaining. It is like speaking to a troop of monkeys. Your just going to get pissed on and hooted at. Best approach is to piss on them instead. It will help prevent the know nothings from falling into error.
The discussion is carrying on with civility and consideration, until cunicula shows up, and calls everyone monkeys who should be pissed on. I think the irony is perhaps lost on him? Cunicula - though your economic reasoning is fallacious, and your demeanor is inappropriate at best and obnoxious at worst, I still refrain from calling you names and have never advocated urination as fitting punishment for you. If you'd like to debate the economics with us "libertarian austrian asshats" whom you loathe so mightily, please do. But stop the immaturity. Your untenable positions can be considered if dressed for the event, but if you're unable or unwilling to engage in proper discourse please go elsewhere. Inflation, properly defined, is the degree by which the money supply increases. It is a useful metric unto itself irregardless of economic activity or other metrics. To claim that "GDP" and "prices" must be considered when strictly measuring inflation is to pervert the term beyond its useful definition. If you take umbrage with this statement, then please explain. I understand many contemporary economists use "inflation" to describe what is more accurately referred to as CPI figures, but many contemporary economists also think spending and consumption is productive behavior, so I'm skeptical of their prescience and take issue with their distortion of terminology. I know you're not a monkey, so stand up for yourself and address the issue like a man or bow politely and find your way to the door.

A better idea is for the machine to display a QR Code, you scan it and send your bitcoins to that address (using your own device), then you get your cash. Putting your private key data on a public machine is kinda dumb. The problem is that an ATM can't afford to wait several minutes for confirmation (though there are solutions). Exactly!!! Send coins to the machine from your phone, get USD cash. Doesn't even need to wait for confirmations.

Bastiat is the greatest. I have a man-crush on him. The concept of the unseen is one of the most important economic concepts for people to grasp. Consider the government-built sports stadium. Hundreds of millions of dollars in cost. When it's built, the people see it and marvel at the wondrous building, and thank the government for creating something so great. They do this because they SEE it. What is unseen, however, is all the goods and services that did not come into existence, because the resources which would've been used to purchase those things was taxed away to build the stadium. But, because it's unseen and distributed over many people and over much time, the population doesn't realize the cost, and instead they stand in naive admiration of the sports stadium, and lavish praise upon the government which has likely made them all poorer. It is a phenomenon present in almost every government program, and it deceives the public in perpetuity. If only people would read Bastiat in school
