701  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How should we pay for things in space? on: July 24, 2013, 05:50:33 PM
By the time we get into serious space settlement, we will have developed the technology to allow faster than light communication.

By the time we're sufficiently advanced to quantum tunnel data or are establishing miniature wormholes for FTL transmission, is it not likely the whole concept of money is outdated by then?

I am not sure the concept of money can become outdated? Even if we live in an egalitarian utopia, there will still be reasons to put value on things for accounting and making decisions and stuff.

Not if we have a Molecular Assembler, there won't be. And I'm reasonably sure we'll get that before FTL.

Time is still finite, so if you want other people to do things for you then you will have to pay them. There is more to life than just stuff.

And won't you need to buy power and raw materials for your molecular assembler to run on?

By the time we get into serious space settlement, we will have developed the technology to allow faster than light communication. So keeping the blockchain up-to-date will not be a problem.

I still think bitcoin has some scale-ability and usability issues that will keep it from being the single payment method for everything. I think something like Ripple (imagine a ripple without the XRP nonsense) will function as the normal payment method, with bitcoins being the backing and settlement currency.
704  Economy / Securities / Re: [BTC-TC] S.MPOE / S.BBET Pass-throughs on: July 24, 2013, 01:52:30 PM
when does S.MPOE-PT pay out?

If you go to the S.MPOE-PT page and click on the "History" tab you can see all the times they pay out dividends, typically around the first of the month.
705  Other / Meta / Re: Do you ever click on links in signatures? on: July 23, 2013, 07:39:19 PM
If I notice a referral part and knew the service before, I make sure to remove the referral part before opening that tab.
Definitely I judge people by their signature.

So I judge you as an obnoxious idiot based on your signature?
706  Economy / Securities / Re: SEC Charges Bitcoin Savings and Trust (BTCST) as Ponzi Scheme on: July 23, 2013, 07:38:06 PM
People: What I ask for is a petition to our Bitcoin stock exchanges to allow stocks download to our PCs.

Petition to Bitcoin stock exchanges:

I ask you to find a decentralized solution for investors to be able to store our stock shares offline, in case of catastrophe and if this site goes down.

One possibility: Investigate "colored BitcoinX" to download stock shares to our computers and store offline, like Bitcoins. It allows to "paint" fractional bitcoins into IOUs, stocks and financial assets and will write our asset possessions right into the block-chain.
Another option, is to develop a new block-chain for stocks and other assets.

This will greatly reduce shareholder risks, -and- allow investors to invest more money.
(The goal is to proof the exchanges vs. government regulatory attacks, hackers, and to keep our freedom)

-Technologov

If I understand correctly, mpex allows users to generate statements showing which shares they own, then if the exchange is shut down the user just has to show their gpg key to the asset issuer to verify they own those shares.
707  Economy / Securities / Re: SEC Charges Bitcoin Savings and Trust (BTCST) as Ponzi Scheme on: July 23, 2013, 06:49:10 PM

No, I realize the difference between BTC-TC and BTCST. If you would notice, the person I responded to is Burnside, who runs btct.co. I was therefore asking if he thought there is a possibility that his operation could face similar charges to what was described in the article.
708  Economy / Speculation / Re: PIRATE BUSTED: Bullish or Bearish? on: July 23, 2013, 05:48:31 PM
This gets more press and raises the awareness level of bitcoins, resulting in higher exchange rate as new people raise the total purchasing poser of bitcoins.

The government response is also positive toward bitcoin, they show that bitcoins themselves are a perfectly legal store of value, but it was the actions done with them that are subject to legal prosecution.
709  Economy / Securities / Re: SEC Charges Bitcoin Savings and Trust (BTCST) as Ponzi Scheme on: July 23, 2013, 05:09:07 PM

What do you think about the chances they will charge everything on BTCT as illigal investment offerings?
710  Economy / Securities / Re: [BTC-TC] Virtual Community Exchange w/ Options, DRIP, 2FA, API, CSV, etc. on: July 23, 2013, 02:33:08 PM
should lower priced assets (like s.mpoe-pt) allow more than 6 digits past the decimal so that they can have 4 significant digits?

0.00087654 should be rounded to 0.0008765 to have four sig figs, but is being rounded to 0.000877 to have only 6 decimal places?

712  Economy / Securities / Re: S.MG - The Ministry of Games. on: July 22, 2013, 11:17:16 PM
The point was, "that's something I did in my spare time, what have you done?"
Oh, I see, it makes sense.

Problem is that he thinks he need no previous experience to do that, and this path always lead to spectacular failures.

I would really like S.MG to succeed, because I want to play a new game. It's really that simple for me.
I understand, but for the sake of the Industry, I want him to fail: such an arrogant and ignorant person can be quite harmful, and we would stay much better if people like him wouldn't try to meddle in things they don't understand.
"We" is both people in game development, and, to a lesser extent, players themselves.

Who is being arrogant now? We can't have anybody shake the boat of our precious "industry"!
713  Economy / Economics / Re: Detroit Becomes Largest U.S. City To File Bankruptcy on: July 22, 2013, 09:04:52 PM
Is anyone really surprised by this?  Detroit has been a ghost town for years.  You can buy actual houses there for $5,000, but why would you want to?  People strip the houses for copper there and probably get away with it.  The city has been abandoning large portions of what used to be part of the city just because a) no one lives there any more and b) it can't afford to keep them up.

The only thing that surprises me about this is that it took them this long to declare bankruptcy.

This.  Pictures don't lie.

http://www.mackinac.org/images.aspx?ID=7453#1961

The simple fact is Detroit has high property taxes and a 2.5% income tax, while none of the suburbs have any income tax. So anybody who earns income has an incentive to move out of the city, and the only people left are the ones who don't earn any money. Having a city full of unemployed people is a recipe for disaster.
714  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: THE TRUTH: Can someone withdraw fiat money from MTGOX? on: July 22, 2013, 08:39:42 PM
Looks like bitstamp is about to take the number one exchange spot away from MtGox!

From bitcoincharts:

SymbolExchange24 hr volume(BTC)24 hr volume(USD)
mtgoxUSD   Mt. Gox 8,196.54 748,447.04 USD
bitstampUSD BitStamp8,002.70 689,184.58 USD

715  Economy / Economics / Re: cB or 1/100 BTC - Convenient Unit Right? on: July 22, 2013, 06:02:46 PM
This conversation has gone on many times on the forum, please use the search function instead of starting new topics.

I prefer to use mB (millibitcoin, or pronounced millibits) for small amounts. For even smaller amounts you can use microbitcoins, abreviated µB or uB. For example, one USD is currently valued at about 10.88 mB.
716  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: BTC usage on: July 21, 2013, 12:32:30 PM
Hi folks!

I have no BTC so far.
'Wondering what is the real usage and benefit?

Sry if I missed the point on wiki or using search...

Thanks

You can just about instantly transfer value to anybody around the globe for a low fee, totally ignoring arbitrary things like national borders.

I use bitcoin to invest at places like BTCT.co and BitFunder.com.
717  Other / Off-topic / Re: Apple Sucks! Arrg, why don't programs work on my old mac? on: July 21, 2013, 12:26:39 PM
I don't know if widows does it or not, but I guess I should have said this was using iTunes and iPhoto (which seem to have their own trash bins in addition to the system one), so it is apple programs which I have a beef with. I don't care how crappy Windows is, pointing out how other people's product is just as bad is not a way to make yours look better.

It's a standardized and proven method. When clearing space, delete the files. Then clear the trash bin.

Also, maybe you're discussing a software package's archival methods, such as Lightroom. Again, another standardized process. There is a difference in meaning in removing an item from a catalog, and deleting the file itself. An entry in a catalog is a record of an item's existence within the catalog, but not the item itself.

Well, then why do they not tell you that anywhere? I seem to remember seeing a box to check when I was using their file import wizard which says "remove original files", which I checked. To me, that should mean when I am done importing my files there is now empty space on the device to fill with new content. Unfortunately for me, that is not how these programs work. Now I know, but why couldn't they just have a note explaining that to the user?
718  Economy / Securities / Re: S.MG - The Ministry of Games. on: July 21, 2013, 12:21:40 PM
Not only are you wrong, but you're also clueless.

I looked at this site when they first started, I thought it looked terrible (it did, and still does), I didn't know anything about the founder and just assumed it was a scam.

Is it really that popular?

People random clueless noobs just like yourself were saying the same thing a year ago. They were making the same wrong choices based on the same broken thought process a year ago. They are no longer with us, for those reasons.

LOL at the quote from Nefario. Althought, I don't think he counts as a random clueless noob, he is more like the leader of all clueless noobs.
719  Economy / Speculation / Re: I believe the price has nowhere to go but down and here's why I think so. on: July 21, 2013, 12:16:34 PM
Right now 111 bitcoins is worth $10,000 ... that is amazing. you can say, who would ever pay $10,000 for 111 bitcoins?
But it is happening right now every single day.
It is likely with the limited supply of bitcoin that the demand will skyrocket

+1

Ask "Who would pay $10 for 1 mB?" and the answer will be anybody who wants to buy a bit of bitcoin when the price is 10`000 USD per XBT on all the official foreign exchange platforms.

And saying that the price has to bought up by using millions of dollars is incorrect. If the consensus is that bitcoins should be priced at $10`000, then all the asks will move north of that number and just a few dollars will move the price up to there.
720  Other / Off-topic / Re: Apple Sucks! Arrg, why don't programs work on my old mac? on: July 20, 2013, 05:21:19 PM
Another thing that annoys me about Apple products: when I import mp3 files off my recorder or pictures off my camera and delete the originals, they go to the trash bin and still take up space on the device. So I thought I had cleared off my memory and was ready to get a bunch of time recording, but then it stopped after a couple minutes, totally ruined my recording of my wife's recital because the memory card was full. Later I found out I had to clear the trash bin, but recording that moment was missed. Not sure if it is apples fault, but they seem like a good person to blame.

And Windows doesn't do that?

I don't know if widows does it or not, but I guess I should have said this was using iTunes and iPhoto (which seem to have their own trash bins in addition to the system one), so it is apple programs which I have a beef with. I don't care how crappy Windows is, pointing out how other people's product is just as bad is not a way to make yours look better.
