8. The Exchange may at its discretion ask asset creators to provide proof of identity, address, phone number, or any other information as deemed appropriate. Said information will be held securely offline and not shared with any third party.

Even if ordered by a court?

From which jurisdiction does GLBSE operate?

Not on the server in my Lan which has the client running. It still runs on W2k, and the new versions don't work on that anymore sadly.

I understand that upgrading hardware and operating systems is expensive but why make it worse by adding hosting a bitcoin node as one of the functions that this server performs?

Hopefully you aren't storing more than two bitcoins on that box.

Also, is there a way to reduce the heavy disk I/O? It's annoying on harddrives, and it will wear down Flash based drives faster.

Are you running the latest (0.6)?  It has improvements with regard to the database.

7047  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: The Bitcoin Dilemma: Can the Internet be shutdown? on: April 09, 2012, 06:25:43 AM
Consider the attempt last year for the government of Egypt to block cross-border Internet traffic.   Sites like gmail, Youtube and CNN even were not accessible by those within Egypt.  But the traffic within the country was still functional.  Eventually the bitcoin client would find peers within the country (or helped a bit by manually specifying which peers to connect to) so all that needs to happen is for one of those nodes to connect to the rest of the internet for the blockchain to be kept current.  That could occur over dialup if nothing else.

There are other ways the Internet could survive if disruptions to massive subcomponents were to occur (e.g., if consumer access providers were to block all traffic, for instance).  Metro-wide networks built using mesh networking technologies with inter-city peering links could some day make reliance on the existing Internet infrastructure.  You wouldn't get Facebook but you could still route e-mail, transfer data files and transact using bitcoin.

Here's one approach for a quick-deploy emergency internet:

7048  Economy / Economics / Re: BITCOIN ATM MACHINES on: April 09, 2012, 05:37:46 AM
I believe the concept was that it would accept cash and spit out a BitBill with the particular amount of bitcoins sent to the card's address:

I don't know if it was also to spit out cash as well though.  That type of transaction could only be done with either Green Transactions or by waiting until after waiting for multiple confirmations (e.g., more than 2 at least, probably at least 6 for any amount of size like $40 or more).

Now that we have OKPay and other debit card products that can be loaded with funds directly from bitcoin and withdrawn at ATMs, a specialized Bitcoin ATM might not be as badly needed.

Redeeming Keys

There are various methods for copying the private key data from a paper wallet to other wallets. Mt. Gox provides the ability to Add Funds using a private key. The exchange will then create a "sweep" transaction that spends any amount for that paper wallet address so that the amount is added to your account with them. They will also sweep to your account any bitcoins received to that address in the future as well.

Those running the Bitcoin.org ("Satoshi") client can import paper wallet addresses using the Pywallet utility. Other clients may allow this as well, including the Javascript-based wallet called My Wallet from BlockChain.info which can import Bitcoin private keys as well.

Don't know of any, offhand.

Googling I see a number of possibilities where an open source solution could be built, depending on what your requirements are.

7051  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [Announce] Coindl.com - a new digital downloads marketplace powered by Bitcoin on: April 08, 2012, 06:05:32 PM
Every upload should appear in new releases once it's approved. Let me know if something doesn't. N

I see, my mp3 didn't have an image so it doesn't render well in the New Releases and I overlooked it.

Could there be a way to optionally upload a thumbnail image rather than forcing it to be in the mp3?
7052  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [Announce] Coindl.com - a new digital downloads marketplace powered by Bitcoin on: April 08, 2012, 05:37:56 PM
Update:

We have added a New Releases page which at this early state is a pretty decent way to navigate the store.

In viewing the new releases, it is not obvious what type of media each item is.  Is the entry a music download or a photo, a video or a ringtone?

Also, if I could add a filter by to see only new releases for a specific type of media (e.g., music items only) that would be useful.

One other feature might be to see all items offered by a specific seller.   Since the artist isn't necessarily the seller, there's no method to know all the items offered by a specific seller.   I suppose this wouldn't show the sellers username with the site since a seller's identity is kept private but some fabricated unique identifier would allow all the seller's items to be linked.

A problem was found in the upload process and has been fixed. If anyone else has had trouble uploading, it should work now.

Yup, that resolved the problem I had.

After listing my item I then got an email within 24 hours saying that the File upload was approved.

Does every upload appear in New Releases then?  If so, how long before a newly listed item appears?

Looking at my catalog it appears the price it shows isn't updating after I make changes.  There are two columns, price in BTC and price in USD, but if I change the method (from BTC to USD for instance) the value under the BTC column remains but the value under the USD gets updated.   But viewing the item's for-sale listing, the price is still showing the price originally entered for BTCs.  I'm assuming the for-sale listing will only list BTCs but if I specified a price in USDs that the price in BTCs shown should be computed based on the BTC/USD exchange rate and the appropriate price in BTCs displayed.

Or am I missing how this works perhaps?

Looks like it added a whopping fee of 0.602 BTC against my wishes. I'll most definitely go bankrupt soon at this rate.

I just read something that I hadn't known about -- from the Bitcoin Wiki:

7059  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Problem Sending Bitcoins on: April 08, 2012, 07:36:47 AM
I'm not sure this system will hold up in the long term if simple transactions are going to get fees beyond a reasonable amount.

Quote
f you are receiving tiny amounts (e.g., as small payments from a mining pool) then fees when sending will be higher than if your activity follows a more normal consumer or business transaction pattern. As of bitcoin 0.5.3 the required fee it will ask for will not be higher that 0.05 BTC, though for most users there is usually no required fee at all and 0.0005 is the most common when one is required.

7060  Economy / Speculation / Re: Will $7.20 be the 2012 high? on: April 08, 2012, 06:59:46 AM
Supply halfs, demand same so price doubles.

Let's say the block reward change occurs on December 9th, 2012.  On December 8th there are 10,492,800 BTC issued and another 7,200 will be issued that day.  The "supply' comes from those 7,200 that miners don't keep plus a certain amount of the 10,492.800 BTC that those holding them are wishing to sell at whatever the current price is.

So demand does not drop in half, only the amount of currency inflation is what drops by half (from 7,200 BTC to 3,600 BTC).

Incidentally, in a market where the commodity is scarce, a doubling in demand causes the price to rise by way more than double.
