741  Local / Mining (Bahasa Indonesia) / Re: Mining Bitcoin Tidak Lebih Baik Pendapatannya dari Signature Campaign? on: December 20, 2023, 09:26:08 AM

742  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Data Harvesting Inside Ledger Live App - Is this really part of Non-custodial? on: December 19, 2023, 11:21:37 AM
Someone already shared that news here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5469941.msg63308706#msg63308706

It's nothing strange to me, considering that various apps have an "analytics" option that collects data about how the user uses the app and a lot more that the company wants to know. The real problem is that this option is turned on by default, and those who are not aware that it exists at all are not aware that they can turn it off.

And usually company makes it difficult or annoying for user to opt-out from such data collection.

However, even if the user turns off that option, can we say with certainty that the app still does not (secretly) collect data and send it to someone for analysis?

No, unless you actively monitor network activity of Ledger Live application which almost doing that.

For whatever reason best known to ledger, and hard to comprehend for users, ledger live app is transmitting information about..
Newsflash: So is almost every piece of software on your computer.

Do you use Windows or iOS? Then your OS is transmitting all that data and more to Microsoft/Apple and a ton of third parties. Do you use Chrome or any browser based on Chromium (i.e. anything except Tor, Firefox, or one of its forks)? Then your browser is transmitting all that data and more to Google and a ton of third parties.

Any browser based on Chromium? How about Ungoogled Chromium?
743  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Someone paid $450K for three (extremely) pixelated cartoon characters on: December 19, 2023, 11:01:58 AM
I  alsoagree it's either money laundry or both buyer and seller actually same person. I don't see any sane person willing to spend $450K just for that when AFAIK the creator isn't famous or well-known.

Useless FOMO. I really dislike stuff that's easy but gets priced way too high. Most people here can create that from YouTube tutorials, so why the hefty price tag?

And these days you could just use AI which generate image from text.
744  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Anything to worry about if you use mixers and not doing anything illegal? on: December 19, 2023, 10:50:06 AM
Anything to worry about if you use mixers and not doing anything illegal?

You can't deposit your coin on most centralized exchange and custodial wallet since it's either against their ToS or they deemed your deposit suspicious. On some case, they'd ask tons of personal information to prove you're innocent.

Will any one come knocking on your door if you use mixers and not doing anything illegal?

I don't know, but i don't recall it ever happens.  CMIIW.

Will posts like this be banned too after Jan?

No.

Will using mixers be an expensive?

It depends on which mixers service you use. Although i expect few mixers would try to be competitive by applying low fees.
745  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: NFTs in the Bitcoin blockchain - Ordinal Theory on: December 19, 2023, 10:38:49 AM
--snip--
You're right, but I was just wondering why LTC/DOGE can have merged mining, while BTC/BCH/BSV cannot do the same (which makes BCH/BSV prone to 51% attacks):

https://www.coindesk.com/tech/2019/05/24/bitcoin-cash-miners-undo-attackers-transactions-with-51-attack/
https://www.coindesk.com/markets/2021/08/04/bsv-suffers-51-attack-report/

People would perceived that BCH or BSV community acknowledge BTC is superior in some ways. There's no way BSV community and faketoshi would do that.

Quote
but they can't inject themself into a transaction
It depends on sighashes. And if mempools will be permanently flooded, then batching will be needed, and there will be services, which will batch transactions, and grab some fees for doing that. But yes, users have to agree on that, by constructing a transaction in a different way. And if you have a choice: create your transaction alone, and have 1 GB of other pending transactions before it will be confirmed, or batch it, and get it confirmed faster, then it is not that hard to imagine, that many people will choose batching, if that option will be available.

Rather than services, we might as well as add protocol which allow non-interactive cut-through or CoinJoin.
746  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Why was the block size not increased? on: December 19, 2023, 10:26:58 AM
If you want everything to confirm in the next block at tiny fees, then you need some other mechanism to pay miners once the subsidy is insufficient. That means either lifting the cap of 21 million and having constant inflation, or some other mining incentive like merged mining.

FWIW few pools already perform merge mining, but the income is extremely small since Bitcoin sidechain isn't popular.

All I heard was that the block size was not increased and this led to the creation of Bitcoin Cash. It was a fork but it is an altcoin (shit coin) while bitcoin remain the bitcoin.

But I am thinking recently that if the block size is increased, more transactions can be processed and the mempool will not be congested. If the block size can be in a way that 1 sat/vbyte transactions can all be processed in the next block, will this not be good?

If the block size is increased, what is its disadvantage to bitcoin network and miners?
I understand of people who have their interest in mining and related business and don't want transaction fees to be increased but I don't understand of those who are regular users and vote against it. I'll be frank and say that another problem is, what block size is the good size? Accepted by everyone? Some argue it's 4MB, some argue it's 1GB Cheesy Some ridiculous answers don't make any sense but it's still a good question.

That's good question, although there's no definitive answer. While i believe increasing block size should consider technological growth and cost to build and run full node, although it's hard to determine the lower limit. For example, should Raspberry Pi 5 (with SSD & 8GB) able to run full node?
747  Other / Meta / Re: BRC20 tokens are altcoins on: December 19, 2023, 10:08:17 AM
BRC-20 are not altcoins in any sense of the word.

First of all, they're on the Bitcoin blockchain.

Second of all, they're tokens, not coins.

I agree, there's no reason BRC-20 can be categorized as altcoin.

There really isn't a great area of the forum for topics discussing them, and most people involved with them don't visit this forum, so its not really a problem. If its general inscription talk, I think Bitcoin Discussion is suitable. If its advertisements for BRC-20, the best current place is probably Tokens (Altcoins) or Marketplace (Altcoins), although they're still not altcoins.

I believe Project Development is more suitable than Tokens (Altcoins) or Marketplace (Altcoins) for some thread about BRC-20 or other token on Bitcoin network.
748  Local / Bahasa Indonesia (Indonesian) / Re: [TANYA]Tips Konsolidasi Bitcoin Agar EEK (Efektif, Efisien, & Kondusif) on: December 19, 2023, 09:55:19 AM

2. Bisakah saya mengkonsolidasi ke alamat semula? Misalkan saya mengirim dari alamat A kembali ke alamat A.

Jawaban singkat, serendah mungkin.

749  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum rewrite in C on: December 18, 2023, 10:47:48 AM
I've experienced a lot of issues with Python modules not being compatible with electrum. This also applies to other Python scripts, though I want to concentrate on Electrum. I've submitted an issue as a feature request on GitHub.

The logical conclusion to the Python ouroboros is to port Electrum to C.

Did i miss something? If you or regular user only want to run Electrum, you could download binary from https://electrum.org.
750  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Should I buy bitcoin ETF now? on: December 18, 2023, 10:40:52 AM
@ adaseb, CODE200, alastantiger, Solosanz, sunsilk

He is not talking about spot bitcoin ETF, he is talking about an altcoin which is only in presale stage as of now. The name is called BTCETF or bitcoin ETF token which would be an ERC20 token.

I want to buy some, I Seems to be almost sold out. Already sold for $4,626,720.67 ($5,059,485 is the maxnum amount).
Let's talk about this.
Just know that this is an altcoin, and not bitcoin ETF. You can gamble with it with the amount of money that you can afford to lose.

This kind of token makes cryptocurrency discussion takes more time. Some time ago i've seen people mistook Satoshi/sat unit as one of BRC-20 token. And using ERC-20 (which is part of ETH) rather than Bitcoin sidechain is an irony.
751  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Could the BIP39 word list be completely replaced? on: December 18, 2023, 10:30:27 AM
I have always been interested in the wordlist used by a early version of Electrum.

1626 words was the list size and it related to a US patent no 5892470 were each word does not represent a given digit.
Instead, the digit represented by a word is variable, it depends on the previous word.

I'm sure it used the list from http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Wiktionary:Frequency_lists/Contemporary_poetry

Since the wordlist was only 1626 would this not weaken anything generated by the early version of Elecrum 2011.

Something I have been looking at for some time now but never really seen it brought up in any of the topics around wordlists.

Some time ago i tried running Electrum 0.3 where it generate 128-bit seed, so assuming it's generated with secure RNG it should be plenty secure. Although i never checked how Electrum convert 128-bit seed to 12 words.

I do not think this will be possible in the future. I do not think it is worth speculating on. But no one knows what will happen in the future.
Why won't that be possible? Just have BIP V1 and BIP V2 and that's all.

Small nitpick, you'll need different BIP number rather than adding version number. For example, Bech32 listed under BIP 173 while Bech32m listed under BIP 350.

752  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: RoninDojo bans connections to Knots nodes on: December 18, 2023, 10:01:56 AM
This is unlikely to make any meaningful difference to the wider network though, given that Dojo is about 3.1% of all nodes, and Knots is about 0.4% of all nodes.

It's surprising there are far more reachable nodes which use RoninDojo than Knots.

You can always do this manually using setban in Core, though.

Core should add a banlist where you can define User Agent string bans.

eg: banuseragent *Knots*

It's interesting idea, although persistent/malicious node can change their user agent easily.
753  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: how to sign a message with php code on: December 18, 2023, 09:49:50 AM
Is there any open source, simple project which just for implement the signing function. It must be open source, no one will trust this kind of software, even Electrum .if I want to sign a message with more than 100 bitcoins, I really can not trust any software even with big companies.  Do you think so?

I have difficulty to understand what you said. But Electrum is open source where the code is available on https://github.com/spesmilo/electrum. And i doubt you can find simple project since signing involve so many things including ECDSA implementation and checking whether you use valid private key.
754  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Outrageous Bitcoin Fees on: December 18, 2023, 09:44:54 AM
Do you think this will stick around for a long time?
Who knows? It stopped last October, but started again a month later. Could it be money laundering through miners?

AFAIK nobody say "tainted" coins used to BRC-20, so i doubt that's the case. In addition, since almost all Ordinals TX broadcasted to whole Bitcoin network, they only able to collect fraction of money spend for TX fee which depends on their overall hashrate.
755  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: How can I generate offline bitcoin address using raspery pi 4? on: December 18, 2023, 09:33:53 AM
Raspberry Pi is just computer with smaller physical size and ARM processor. So you could install OS on the microSD and add software wallet you prefer to use to that microSD and turn on your Raspberry Pi 4. For extra security, verify integrity of the OS and wallet software you download.

There's no PoW-based cryptocurrency can be mined for free. You'll need to pay for the hardware and electricity.
Is there a method that can be mined directly using a computer, without the need for professional equipment or complex mining pool design and construction, so that more people who do not understand technology can participate?

For example, download a wallet and click in the wallet to turn on or off mining.

Hire a software developer to create wallet with built-in mining feature. But take note people still need to pay for electricity which needed to run their computer.
757  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Coin Pot on: December 18, 2023, 09:13:37 AM
I checked the website and found some red flags,

1. This statement. Bitcoin is decentralized, there's no thing such as official wallet. Even Bitcoin Core only referred as reference client/software.

Quote from: coinpot dot cc
We created a Bitcoin Official wallet in accordance with the principles laid down by Satoshi Nakamoto, the creator of Bitcoin:

2. Stating 4.8 out of 5 ratings without source or references.

Quote from: coinpot dot cc
Bitcoin Official Wallet was rated a 4.8 out of 5 based on 1358 reviews.

3. Wrongfully claim bitcoin.org as official website.

Quote from: coinpot dot cc
Bitcoin represents a new form of currency that's based on a unique technology and philosophy. It's for everyone, and whoever takes advantage of its potential, Bitcoin can offer exciting opportunities for investment and financial freedom. Official website: bitcoin.org/en/

4. The website only registered few months ago.

Domain:coinpot.cc
Registrar:NameCheap, Inc.
Registered On:2023-08-21
Expires On:2024-08-21
Updated On:2023-08-21

There are few other things i haven't mentioned, but those are more than enough to distrust this website.
758  Other / Meta / Re: To login I had to go thru over 50 captcha is this normal? on: December 18, 2023, 08:47:30 AM
Use paid VPN and connect to server on unpopular country. After that, get URL which can bypass captcha.
While paid VPN is recommended but for just using the forum it's not that bad to use a free VPN, find a way to login which is easier than TOR. Get the captcha bypass url, save it. For rest of the time he can use the bypass URL and use TOR for browsing the forum.

I get your point. But paid VPN usually means IP address you use was used by less people (leads to less annoying captcha) and less risky in terms of security and privacy.
759  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin community are in support of BRC20 on: December 17, 2023, 09:46:23 AM
I have a question, what qualify someone to be bitcoin people? Just owning Bitcoin?
I am referring to those early adopters, miners and developers. Two developers surfaced on the news about how Ordinals and BRC20 tokens are spamming the mempool and that they should be removed, but there are still others developers that will support it. I do not believe anymore that Ordinals existence which some people called vulnerability was not knowingly introduced by bitcoin developers. It is now too late, there is nothing that can be done than to work on how to reduce mempool congestion.

That's rather strict way to define Bitcoin people. Anyway, i don't expect miner/pool to oppose Ordinals while only minority developer strongly against BRC-20 while majority seems to neutral or doesn't state their opinion.
760  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Seniors, how much does it cost to develop a cryptocurrency like Bitcoin? on: December 17, 2023, 09:40:42 AM
If there is a cryptocurrency that can be mined for free, I believe it will be popular.

There's no PoW-based cryptocurrency can be mined for free. You'll need to pay for the hardware and electricity.

How much does it cost to develop such an altcoin?

In past, service called Forkgen let you create Bitcoin fork easily with relative low cost[1].
